When testing fans for the S5 the fan that came closest to stock cooling temps while still reducing noise is the:

Scythe DFS123812H-3000

I'm optimistic that it would provide enough airflow for the S4 as well assuming your ambient temps aren't ridiculous.
The S4 fans spool 4200RPM (max) and this one tops out about 3000RPM so its a very noticeable difference in sound.

I see, weird. The Scythe has only 133 CFM vs the Silverstone's 171CFM. You have compared them to one another and the Scythe is somehow more effective?

Basically the one exchange i found in Brazil has a 12% premium on the BTC going price, so doing it that way would be worse than Paypal.

Is there a legit or a way i didn't think of him either sending me money with minimal fee or him obtaining BTC hassle free-ish at normal price?

From coinbase "Brazil is treating digital currencies as financial assets, with the Receita Federal imposing a 15% capital gains tax at the time of sale.".   So as far as a legal exchange in Brazil chances are it will be high percent.  Sadly exchanges because of laws cannot work in all countries.  So some specialize in certain countries.

Legit way's is paying the extra tax.  It sucks but that is the legit way.  You could use something such as localbitcoins but you still are going to pay high fees and there is some risk of scams.

So for him to buy it there is going to be more then minimal fee sadly.

Hmm. But he can send money through paypal for 3%~. That would seem better. The problem is paypal also keep an extra 2% on currency conversion. And then i have the turn the paypal money into Bitcoin somehow or find a seller here that takes Paypal.

This sound like a pain. But 12% is being retarded and not doable. The 15% tax explain the price of BTC on Brazilian exchange, however.

Still there has to be a way to transfer fund with smaller amount of fee. If BTC is too expensive then we just have to find a cash way, hmm.

Sadly he is in a country that there is nothing he can do to avoid BTC high prices.   You could have him send through paypall and you buy BTC and it's less then the fees on his exchanges.

With his country having this tax there just is not a easy way to get around it.  They don't make tax to be avoided, so this is why it is hard.

But whats the best route when the money is in Paypal? Deposit to debit account (very slow) or is there another low fee way to ultimately get BTC from an exchange? Finding seller who take Paypal could be doable but it's not without its challenges.
4023  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive Bitmain Antminer S4 Setup [HD] on: August 21, 2015, 11:32:49 PM

I don't think they are really larger. Is the 120mm such a tight fit it barely fit itself?

It's pretty tight, unfortunately I sold all my S4's so I cant just measure it for you but eyeballing it I think its to small to fit a 140mm. If you pick them up from amazon you can just return them if they dont fit  Wink

http://www.amazon.com/Silverstone-Cooler-Computer-Cooling-FHP-141/dp/B00A460TK6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1440198421&sr=8-1&keywords=Silverstone+FHP-141&pebp=1440198421762&perid=14NKYMKYKDB1RKMQFRK9

I did this testing multiple fans for S5's and let me tell you, it is VERY difficult to find alternative solutions to cool these guys. I would agree with notlist3d that any of Bitmains replacement suggestions will work just fine but you dont have much to gain by swapping out stock fans.

Well the S4 doesn't seem to have the S5's fan control option? I'm able to cool the S5 just fine by feeding it cool air and the S4 with stock fan but at lower RPM would probably more bearable.

So that really leaves changing the Fans or downvolting the stock fans =/

It's pretty hard looking at that list to figure out how much dB you would get if you used those fan.
4024  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive Bitmain Antminer S4 Setup [HD] on: August 21, 2015, 10:45:25 PM
Hello, is replacing the fans in this units with 4x Silverstone FHP-141 possible and a benefit to cooling/dB ratio?

I would be willing to bet that those fans (140mm with 120mm mounts) are too big and will not fit in the S4. with max RPMs being 2000 I also dont think they will move enough air to cool them appropriately.

The RPM is slower then you should use.  It would not be recommended.  It is just too slow.

Look here for better choices: https://bitmain.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/204199879-Antminer-S4-fan-specification-and-possible-replacement-fans

Are you certain? It has the same CFM as the stock fans. The only portion i'm not sure is the impact of its static pressure value.

A miner from a newbie that does 0.075J/GH. At an usual V/A design... 1500watt really?
Is yesminer remotely legit? The 3D rendered image is pretty nice.

4027  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Unofficial Spondoolies SP20 thread on: August 21, 2015, 07:56:04 PM
I did a fan mod for 1 sp20.

I pulled the fan out completely and added a silverstone to the external end of the miner.

Are you sticking with a Pull configuration? Have you tried switching to Push, or Push+Pull?

pull and while it is quiet it is not quite correct.

 next will be push- pull

Did you ever try this? I can find a follow up to this with the search function.

I would quite like to know how low you can drop the dB with 2 silverstone FHP-141.

GAVE UP ON GETTING SP20'S super quiet.   settled with the stock fans and ran at 6% speed undeclocked

Thats unfortunate. Was there no gain or its just that it wasn't worth the price of 2 FHP-141?

if you did not mind an underclock to around 1000gh it ran too hot at 1200gh.  as for control I used external psu and got it very quiet .  I also kept both silverstones external and fully pulled the internal fan

Thank you for the details. I might stick to S5's in that price range.

Having an underclocked S20 could be of interest but its a bit expensive compared to getting S3's and maybe even S5 or such.
4028  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Receiving money from Brazilian Friend to Canada? on: August 21, 2015, 07:47:18 PM
Everything about making business with Brazil sucks, it's too expensive for them to buy stuff outside Brazil, it's difficult to receive money from Brazilian users, it's difficult to send money out of Brazil, difficult or prohibitive expensive...

You can check these services:

http://www.correios.com.br/ - Canada doesn't seem to be in the list of countries they operate.

http://www.sendmoney.com.br/

www.westernunion.com

Paypal can only be used for purchases, not money transfer.

He send me fund through Paypal regularly so unless you meant in service intent, thats definitively not the case. Thankfully.

Paypal can only be used for purchases, not money transfer.
If the funds are sent through friends and family you can transfer money through PayPal. VirosaGITS could use that method (without having problems) if he's receiving money from his friend.

Almost 100% correct, everyone has the option to "send funds" but "to friends and family" that let you avoid fees isint even an option to Brazilians. And if you send to friends and family internationally i've still been hit by the fee. So the only fee-less Paypal transfer i ever done was Canada to Canada and US to US accounts.

-
Thanks for all the replies, but yes thats correct, the Brazilian exchange has a 12-15% markup, so thats not very workable =/. As such Paypal is the best option currently but its a pain to deal with Paypal and then spend the Paypal funds.

I'll have to see if Western Union could be less fees... This sucks however xD

4030  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Second hand S5 for Bitmain, are they worth ? on: August 21, 2015, 06:23:01 AM
Only worth it if it's hashing well and you can get it at a decent price, or else... No!

Well the bitmain unit is no longer for sale, thus its hard to continue this train of thoughts.

I received one and thats it even though i could be interested in a second one.

I assume you have a purchased account looking at the post history. Your posts all the sudden went up an amazing amount after a long time of no posts. I am sure you bought the account to contribute and not get paid per post right?

That certain belief that you have on my account is a fallacy. VirosaGITS has always been mine and always will be. Reputation is everything.
The reason my post rate went up so much is because my life situation changed recently. Which lead to me getting into Sha256d for the first time.

Posting over 100 per week is not for selfless purpose of contribution, just personal interest and desire for information.

I'm no hero here, i would definitively post less and make less effort to contribute information if i was either not paid or had no personal interest in the topic.

Can I ask what is worth reading on this forum in a week to justify 100 posts?

***Edit****
I just realized the answer to this question. Argue with people.

Debating, arguing, discussing learning. Indeed.
But the real answer to your question is 0.07-0.1BTC a week.

For the 10-30 post over that, well. A post or three extra per day isint that much and there is tons of projects here that will and already did turn into profit. Smiley

200-300 Posts would be doable if this was turned into a part time job.

Or i guess you could push that further and do it full time like Amph.

You're obviously a busy man.

Obviously a lot of time at home. Smiley

Macro PM sent to you a minute ago.

Please reply once you get time.

Thanks.

Always wondered why people post "sent you a PM". Why would you need to post that?

Probably because has missed PMs and only noticed it, immediately, after i mentioned it here. So its probably the same for him.

It is a way of hopefully nicely getting a PM through.  I sent a few and did not hear back I know he is busy so I understad, and am not worried.

But figured I would post as that chances are will get a PM back as I know he checks thread and will see it.

And no post in this thread count which is nice as that is not counted as a post, so no issues there.

Its not like its a big deal. With the 100 limit a good portion of my posts i make aren't "paid" anyways.

You post too much then...

Says the guy with 10 time my amount of total post Wink
4035  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] Antminer S5 Units on: August 20, 2015, 09:22:13 PM
I am selling because my lease on my mining facility is expiring soon and the summer heat has been causing me to shut off all my older gen mining gear so instead of it sitting off id rather sell to someone who can put them to use before they are worth nothing

Its unfortunate because as a more or less aware buyer, i'm a bit wary of paying even something like 300USD, because depending on the volume the price could plummet soon.

4038  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 200 GPU farm got rained on, had to move it. on: August 20, 2015, 08:13:49 PM
Most of the GPUs are downstairs now, looks like about 20 or 30 are broken.

If this upstairs GPU farm is launched again, the following will be done:

1. Installation of awning and drainage on window to prevent rain from entering.

2. Exhaust fan will be connected to the same 3-phase power supplying farm. Upon power loss and subsequent restore, APC power strip will be instructed to turn fan on immediately, and the rest of the machines only after 30 minutes. This way, if any rain gets in, it will be dried out long before hardware is damaged.

Do you still have RMA and warranty on those cards?

This gave me a good laugh. Yeah i'm sure warranty cover damage of hardware if left under the rain. Wink
I don't think Ugt will let it happen again.
4039  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitmain Antminer S6 and S7 Speculation on: August 20, 2015, 04:28:37 PM
Basically we're likely to see a S5 design/fan/noise thing with around same watt consumption but twice the hashrate.

Unless they continue that monster trend of 3x units.
4040  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience BM1384 Project Development Discussion on: August 20, 2015, 04:26:27 PM
We can be hopeful about that announcement portion:

Quote
Bitmain expects that the next-gen chip will be available for consumer purchase in the near future.
I'm not sure if "consumer purchase" is exactly what "we"/sidehack need but at least it seem to be on the table.
