4041  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Easiest and most secure way to cold store bitcoins on: April 06, 2022, 10:06:57 AM
I am technologically knowledged to set up both an offline wallet and an watch-only wallet.
But If I get robbed, someone steals the offline computer and discover my electrum password I am dead right ?

If you plan to HODL, i.e. won't actually spend the coins, you can write down and save safely in multiple places the recovery seed, keep the watch only wallet and wipe the offline computer (or use a live OS from start for the cold storage).
If you indeed want to spend and use the cold storage then you have options like:
* use an OS with strongly encrypted HDD
* use live OS with no persistence (just then you'll have to access often the seed, hence sub-optimal)
* use a strong password for your wallet and make sure you can move the coins to safety in a timely manner after the cold storage theft is noticed (using the seed backup)

So if you use a hard-to-discover long password (or phrase) you're not "dead", even in case of theft.

LE:
Also keep in mind that the "offline computer" can actually be an-OS-on-an-USB stick, which can be hidden easier and doesn't look that valuable as a laptop.
4042  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The reason people join bitcointalk forum on: April 06, 2022, 09:05:45 AM
Some more numbers of people join bitcointalk forum for one or two reasons, to gain knowledge or for both the money and the knowledge. The zeal to make money

As said, many will join only for money not for "money and knowledge", not realizing that without knowledge they'll mostly hunt for empty promises, wasting their time and earning nothing.

Even more, even the previous post has missed one more category: those hunting for money to be earned outside of the forum, spamming with links to various weak news sites or blogs, ref links to various platforms (most of them being scam).

Unfortunately the new ones seeking knowledge - with or without the added money - are fewer and fewer.
4043  Economy / Speculation / Re: Terra cofounder Do Kwon is the one who is pumping Bitcoin on: April 06, 2022, 08:54:28 AM
While I am trying to be thankful of How this Terra Founder invests Billions of dollars inside Bitcoin yet i am still waiting for the other billions to be put on so we can see another pump

A smart investor will buy only in a way he doesn't affect the price too much, hence I would not hold my breath for a new pump (I don't say it won't happen, but it actually may or may not happen).
Even more an evil investor may fake a dump to trigger all the shorts outta there, then buy back cheaper.

So.. beware, the markets don't actually work like in your (our?) wishful thinking.
4044  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The cost of bitcoin transfers on: April 06, 2022, 08:24:14 AM
The cost of bitcoin transfers has increased. Do you think this is trivial? Is it worth transferring money with bitcoin? Why transfer money with Bitcoin if the transfer cost is high?
like i have 100$ in one of my old wallet but i cant transfer it because of transfer fee is more than my asset !

Let me guess: you are talking about an exchange you "transfer" from?
If so, you are misled and misleading. The custodian exchange ask for a hefty withdrawal fee they sometime wrongfully label as transaction fee, but it's mostly their profit.

If you use a proper local wallet with correct settings you'll pay a few satoshi/vByte as fee, less than 50 cents for a normal transaction.

However, if you have a proper local wallet and the fee is high then you may have to look how many inputs you have. The high number of inputs make transactions very large (in vBytes) hence expensive (as an analogy,
moving pennies need you rent a lorry, moving a couple of big notes instead is cheap)
4045  Economy / Speculation / Re: Understanding S2F Current Situation (Stock To Flow Model) on: April 06, 2022, 08:16:39 AM
What If we get a company like Apple sharing their Balance sheet of BTC purchase? that will change the whole story right.

Such a move might have only a short term speculative effect. What's done is done.
What may matter more is whether they  - no matter who "they" is, as long as it sits on a fat fiat balance - keep buying or not. If not, the current position in the 4-year cycle may matter more. For now, as we can see, at least Terra and Saylor keep buying.
4046  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: mining with a generator on: April 06, 2022, 08:12:24 AM
Would i be able to mine with a gas or gasoline generator in my basement with  no vent?

From what I know, generators are usually very noisy.
From what I know, electricity produced by generators is usually overly expensive, hence most probably not suitable for mining.
And since you have an engine with internal combustion there, you'll need enough oxygen. With no vent, I don't think that's possible.

Also, if you keep the ETH mention in OP this may get moved into altcoin mining.
4047  Economy / Speculation / Re: Understanding S2F Current Situation (Stock To Flow Model) on: April 06, 2022, 07:59:21 AM
I find it a bit difficult to have a new ATH when it's just 750 days left for Bitcoin Halving.

I'm not sure if this chart can correctly take into account the billions the institutional investors did pump and keep pumping into bitcoin.
I'm sure that this chart didn't take into account the special case of $10 billions that's flowing in more or less as we speak.

So while a new ATH may not happen (although that may also be debatable), at least the chances for a new capitulation/crypto winter may be smaller than in the previous cycles.
What you think? Am I so badly wrong?

Still, I appreciate the heads up, since we should hope for the best, yet, be prepared for the worse.
4048  Economy / Economics / Re: Gold-backed ruble could be a game-changer on: April 06, 2022, 07:46:19 AM
I said directly in my first post on this topic that a return to the gold standard for Russia is now impossible and impractical.

As PR it can somewhat try to prove why Ruble is (artificially) kept at this value.
I don't see other reason for this.

Pegging the ruble to energy resources has more prospects.

It may also be impractical, since the energy prices may fluctuate independently from what the central bank wants to have as the value of the currency notes.
Also if this war continues for too long, the western countries will actually find other energy suppliers, leaving Russia no other choice than selling under the market price to those accepting the deal and turning a blind eye to all the bad things Russia has done especially in the last month.

However, at the same time, the existing gold reserves of the Central Bank of Russia are more than enough to, if necessary, immediately pay in full all of Russia's external debt, which now stands at about $58 billion.

With fiat value getting lower and lower, storing the gold for longer may result in having less to pay on long term.
And gold is not really for that use (to be spent for clearing the debt), it's more to prove the others the country is solvable.
And, finally, we both know how risky is now for Russia to work with the western banks and western money, so most probably they will not move a finger until the west will chill.
4049  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Easiest and most secure way to cold store bitcoins on: April 06, 2022, 07:35:03 AM
I want to keep things simple but as unbreakable as possible.

The correct method for not getting your funds stolen is keeping the actual keys/seed offline.
As said, one method at hand is Electrum as cold storage, and keep in mind that the cold storage must remain offline forever (if you must go online, that wallet/system must be wiped out first).
If setting up a cold storage is a difficult task for you, next best option is acquiring hardware wallet (but please do some reading on the topic before spending money)
4050  Economy / Economics / Re: Gold-backed ruble could be a game-changer on: April 06, 2022, 07:27:22 AM
To fully ensure the entire money supply with gold? In Russia, there is a very strong shortage of money supply compared to other countries, but to demand that the entire money supply be fully backed by monetary gold on the balance sheet of the Central Bank is a bit too much, don't you think?

Indeed, it is too much. At least we agree on this. Yet, it's not me boasting this, the article premise is that Russian Central Bank will have the Ruble backed by gold.
And math has shown that this is not possible, not fully, even at the discounted price they work with.
4051  Economy / Economics / Re: Gold-backed ruble could be a game-changer on: April 06, 2022, 07:04:18 AM
I don't understand the reason for your doubts.

Because they have a solid history of lying about.. basically everything.

From 2014 to 2020, the Central Bank of Russia actively increased the share of gold in its gold and foreign exchange reserves, buying up all the gold that is mined in Russia. As of February 1, 2022, the Central Bank has gold worth $132 billion (about 2,300 tons).

By the data I've found in a very quick search, the money supply in 2020 was 12.431 trillion rubles and I expect in 2022 the number is bigger. So a simple math tells that at this rate they're at least 186.2 tons of gold short. It's much better than expected (although I have my strong doubts about how correct/real those numbers are), but still not covered 100%.

Name at least one major economy in the world that is living within its means with a sustainable budget surplus and does not have a large external debt. Only Russia, there is no other answer. Russia can at any time immediately fully repay its foreign debt in gold and withdraw from the external borrowing market, and this will not affect its current cash flows in any way.

Russia is - by far - not something I would boast as major economy. They don't produce almost anything desired by the other economies, almost all they sell is resources. What's the merit in that?!
Also I live in a country that - before the iron curtain has fallen - tried hard to pay its external debts in full. I do remember how bad it was for the population, so, again, I would not boast this unless I am indoctrinated and don't want to see the reality in full.

So no, you didn't convince me.
4052  Economy / Services / Re: [FOR HIRE] Signature Campaign Manager on: April 06, 2022, 06:20:14 AM
If you want to speed up the things you can look at the link in my avatar (@Royse777 campaign manager), or you can look at this bigger list of campaign managers.

This way you'll already see the portfolios and also will actually choose from the known/reputed ones, not some wannabes.
4053  Economy / Economics / Re: Gold-backed ruble could be a game-changer on: April 06, 2022, 06:14:01 AM
Quote
Linking the currency to gold and energy is a paradigm shift for the global economy, a precious metals analyst tells RT

The Bank of Russia has resumed gold purchases this week, but more importantly, the regulator is doing so at a fixed price of 5,000 rubles ($59) per 1 gram between March 28 and June 30

Do they have enough gold for backing for real all the rubles in circulation? I highly doubt it.
I see it as a desperate PR stunt to show why they forcefully keep the ruble "price" high.
And as I said, it's PR. They're lying (what's new?). They don't have the gold for it, hence it's somewhere between advertising and actual scam.
4054  Economy / Economics / Re: WTF? Food prices expected to raise up to 50% in German supermarket. on: April 05, 2022, 07:55:37 PM
I have to guess that the free lunch was not even given that much, it wasn't really given. This isn't really about pandemic, it is not about given free money, it is not about inflation all that much, it is about the fact that oil is something Russia has a lot of, and European nations do not have enough at all. Which means that we are talking about gas prices increasing a lot due to Russia war, and sanctions to them.

This results with food becoming more expensive because logistics of it became a bigger price as well. That's what I am guessing as the biggest problem, if Russia didn't attacked Ukraine, and there were no oil problems, inflation would have happened, but not this much.

Actually especially the gas prices have started rising well before the war. And it was not only because Putin was preparing for the war, no. It was because Russia has understood that Europe miscalculated its politics.

You cannot just get rid of coal based electricity and nuclear based electricity in one rather quick step if you don't really have something that's yours and can use instead.
Well, EU thought that they can rely on Russia's gas because, you know, Russians and so nice fellas.
Of course, a monopoly will rise its prices, not because they have to, just because they can and you have no other alternative than pay, no matter what.

So no, it's not only about the war. The latest mix of green plans, although the intentions were most probably good, was the seed for this disaster, from the ever rising prices to Putin thinking that the West, in the same way they pay for the gas, will also allow him take Ukraine to be his backyard.
4055  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Do your own research on: April 05, 2022, 07:45:32 PM
There used to be some saying like "if you copy one's paper, it's plagiarism; if you inspire yours from a big number of papers, it's a completely new research paper".
There is the fear that the advice is not good or not well used. There's also the chance some may give you advises that helps them, not you...

I would say you better read as many advises as you can, then take the decision for yourself. Keep in mind that since you are new, there are chances that you'll make mistakes, so consider reading a great deal and not investing too much too early.

Are there specific trusted  sites that can narrow down ones knowledge on investing in cryptocurrency and can boldly say “This is a financial advise” because there are so many contents out there and some of them are contradictory..

I'm sorry, I don't know of any, but:
* especially in crypto (which is still considered new/not mature enough, and also not regulated properly), I'd expect those who give you financial advises and name it financial advises, may actually be scammer.
* the actual (real, trusted) financial advisors may not know (or care) about crypto; and you can't blame them: they've done their studies in/about fiat (and may not be open minded enough), so they may still see crypto from "high risk" to "scam". But even if you'd find open minded financial advisors that can tell about crypto, they may not go cheap (and certainly not on free websites)

So I think that you'll have to spend valuable time searching and asking.

My advises (non financial, dyor, you know the drill) are:

* start with small amounts you can afford to lose or keep locked in crypto for many years
* DCA - buy multiple times smaller amounts instead of one big amount - just beware the exchange withdrawal fees (probably withdraw only after certain threshold is met)
* focus only on bitcoin until you start understanding which altcoin/token/nft/defi projects are scam and what have the slightest potential to actually grow; and make sure it's the actual bitcoin, not altcoins borrowing bitcoin name or pegged to bitcoin.
* you may want to do some reading about KYC/non-KYC exchanges before you send money to any of them; then you'll have to choose an exchange platform you'll use (make sure it's a reputable one, if in doubt ASK); see about the fees, as said; if KYC is needed you may want to fill that to make sure you don't get later into surprises
* learn about wallets / wallet safety / keeping backup seed safe / hardware wallets, clipboard hijackers so you don't lose your coins to hackers
* keep in mind that every crypto coin has its own blockchain (own universe) so you'll have to use bitcoin blockchain for bitcoin
4056  Economy / Goods / Re: Stainless steel Bitcoin Recovery Seed Plate on: April 05, 2022, 06:56:49 PM
Hammer and marker can buy at any hardware store (or look in your toolbox). I don't think that a piece of this inox plate will also be difficult to find.

I find willi9974 set more a collectible set than something I'd mess with. I may have odd taste, but the plate with the mount, the HOLD Hammer and marker seem to ask to be shown, not hidden away.

If I would ever have good reason to store the seed on steel, I'd probably go for the washers, really. Your setup looks complicated. And complicated usually asks for troubles (in 10 years, not now).
4057  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Another day, Another Lesson for those who want to learn on: April 05, 2022, 05:15:07 PM
If this isn't a scam what could it be anyway?

It's advertising.
Some known Bitcoin wallets receive dust transactions that tell a story.
The wallets on blockchains that allow smart contracts and tokens - not only on ETH - people get tokens for free, with or without impersonating other token names, but clearly containing some website link.

Scam? why would it be scam? Nobody forces you to send those tokens anywhere. And even if you send them, all you lose is probably the tx fee (and the worthless tokens).

--
It can become scam if you go to that website and it asks you to enter your wallet seed. Then yes, please report it as scam (although I would avoid visiting unnecessarily unknown websites, unless you know how to do that from a virtual machine or sandbox).
4058  Economy / Economics / Re: Read If you are between 18 and 68 years old! on: April 05, 2022, 05:04:21 PM
Gilbert's Research shows people from 18 to 68 underestimate how much they will change in the future, because of that they miss long term financial plans! What do you Think? Do you have any long term financial plans?

This is a Bitcoin forum. This means that a big number of users here probably hold some satoshi (probably some hold even bitcoins) and try to increase their stash.
I think that this is the best long term financial plan one can have now: acquire bitcoin and hodl.
And yeah, we're mostly between 18 and 68.

So what are you asking about? Other financial plans? That would be a nonsense...
4059  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Microstrategy rug us again? on: April 05, 2022, 02:40:17 PM
Bitcoin sharply drop after Microstrategy announced they purchased a total of 4167BTC. The price is building a bullish momentum when the price drop coincidentally after the announcement. This is not the first time happened that involves whale company announce positive new while price moves in opposite way.

Does this institutional investors manipulating the price or traders is just using there news as a negative signal?

I've found a "sharp drop" only when zooming in to 1h or less.
The price has fallen back to the awful value we had at midnight. I am surprised you survived the price we had 4 days ago...

No. For now it's a dip for ants (Bitcoin price can easily change even 8-10% per day, now the overall is -1.30%) and I advise you look at the charts set to daily. It would benefit your hearth and your sanity on long term.
About manipulating - everybody who can earn a dollar off manipulating the market, will do it. And a lot of whales go by "buy the rumor, sell the news"; well, they've just "sold the news" (the whales, not MicroStrategy)

On long term, compared to what is that Korean guy planning to buy, this is really small.
Bitcoin price will keep going up and down. Manipulation may or may not be involved. Try to stop panicking because of that.
4060  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What if all cryptocurrencies merged together? on: April 05, 2022, 08:51:56 AM
Am I getting this wrong?

Well, from what I understood, OP wanted the projects merge, not the buyers.

For all the buyers buy only Bitcoin you basically need to either convince everybody only buy bitcoin (not possible) or somehow disallow/deny existence to all the other crypto projects (also not possible).
And making "what if" calculations for things that will not happen are, sorry, pointless...
