4082  Other / Meta / Re: Marketplace / Sservices board floods quickly... suggested child boards. on: December 15, 2015, 04:01:32 PM
I have my video agency's main thread in the services section, and quite a lot of customers find us that way. We make videos for blockchain businesses exclusively.

To bad it only stays on first page for a couple of hours, since all those signature or "sign up here to get X" threads get a ton of replies.

I suggest a simple fix ; a "campaigns" child board. That way people can find other services more easily.

Jay or nay ?

Did anyone keep count on the number of threads suggesting this?

Anyway: nay, they are plenty, but not enough to justify a separate section.
4083  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcoin Forum DDoS Attacks, why are they done? on: December 15, 2015, 04:00:06 PM
There are lots of people with a shit load of money on here, some early adopters are rich AF.
A DDOS attack could enable them to gain access to people's accounts, PM's & all sorts of sensitive information.

There would be a whole lot to gain & nothing to lose for talented hackers unfortunately.

Nope thats not how (D)DoS attacks work, it litteraly means denial of service. If access to the service is denied it is for everyone so there is nothing to gain, but a site that cant be reached. It was argued whether this should be allowed as some form of online protest. If 100's of people gather in front of a store they essentially deny access to the store as well.
4084  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin hacking, How long would it take? on: December 15, 2015, 02:05:11 PM
You can never know this because in th future the computers may be 1000 times faster, u never know what next is going to be invented. It will take 100 more years at least I think before anyone can hack btc.

Lets look at those numbers and see what happens. My GPU does up to 37 Million keys per second. Lets assume 50 million to have a round number. Lets further assume everyone on earth has such an GPU running and that checking the addresses for a balance takes no time.

So 10 billion (rounded up) people generate and check 50 billion keys per second (remember 1000 times faster) for 100 years.

A: 10*10003 50 * 10003 * 60 * 60 * 24 * 365 * 100 = 1.5768*1030

B: At the same time we have 2160 or ~1.4615*1048 possible addresses with 296 private keys each.

A/B = 1.0788 * 10-18. So still a lower chance than winning a 6 of 49 lottery 3 times in a row.

Shorena have you calculated the impact, if more people adopt Bitcoin and more addresses are being used? I know the math are staggering and the chance is nearly impossible...

but I would like to know how the possibility increase as adoption grows and more addresses are being used. In theory the math should be in your favor, if more addresses are

being used? Personally I would much rather invest that hashing power to mine bitcoins, than trying to hash a private key.

Well if assume a number of possible addresses that each has a single satoshi and 21 million btc, we have 2100000000000000 or 2.1*1015 possible addresses with 1 satoshi each. Again the simplistic approach is to multiple the above chance by the number of addresses. So we end up with a ~0.227% chance given the above scenario (100 years, every person uses insanly good computers) to find a single satoshi.
4085  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Bitcoin core for android? on: December 15, 2015, 01:08:53 PM
Smartphones dont have the computing power yet to be used as a full node to support the network.
Even older PC's / Notebooks struggle using ´BTC Core with 4gb Ram

Single core with 1 GB RAM works fine, most modern phones have more CPU power and ram.
4086  Other / Meta / Re: Is it the nut-shell or the Nut ? you are dealing with. on: December 15, 2015, 12:12:45 PM

If smooth does, you should talk to them and not ask for other opinions.
I have done, but the the number of people agreeing to this poll might influence him or give him the surety to take the stand and explain/present it when required.

I can only give you my view.
That is why i pmed you and still waiting for one .It's poll.

To boild it down:

Trying to influence others on DT is not ok, unless it is done with arguments.

Those on DT should give the ratings they think are deserved and should be free to change their mind.

Make sure you read the help file and follow it

Dont download that crap.
4088  Other / Meta / Re: Is it the nut-shell or the Nut ? you are dealing with. on: December 15, 2015, 11:06:45 AM
Let me make one thing clear again that i am not accusing nor against smooth and people are ignoring that.

IMHO its perfectly fine to change a rating at a later time if new information are available. Lets say you are happy with a trade and leave a positive feedback.

In summary, for people who previously had many positives and no negatives:
- The first negative rating defines a border between pre-controversy and post-controversy.
- Don't move this border unless you have a really good reason. If you must add more info, leave another negative or neutral rating.
- If you agree with the border-negative, leave a negative rating.
- If you disagree with the border-negative, leave a positive rating responding to the negative, even if you already have a positive rating for that person. Don't delete your old rating. You should also consider excluding the inaccurate-rater from your trust list.

The quote of theymos has nothing to do with the topic at hand. Its about leaving a counter rating if you strongly disagree with a given negative one. It puts arguments into the trust system that can not be resolved otherwise.

-snip-
Why should you not change your rating?
you could and i got no problems if he wants to but changing because of other non-logical people is what i am speaking about

I have never experienced what you describe. If smooth does, you should talk to them and not ask for other opinions. I can not argue for someone else, I can only give you my view.
4089  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Pending with 108 confirmations??? on: December 15, 2015, 09:24:27 AM
Thanks for your, answer, but jow do I physically resync the Wallet?

Usually its enough to close and reopen electrum.

Are you sure its not showing as confirmed? Did you check the "Addresses" tab? Is your total balance shown correct?
4090  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Only 97 nodes in china? on: December 15, 2015, 09:12:18 AM
But if the number is not right, is there any other ways that we can find out the number of nodes in each country??

No.

#1 "Country" is hard to define in internet terms. Which country is a node in that is running on Tor?
#2 If the node does not accept outbound connections you have no way to connect to it. How do you find out if there is a node behind the IP if your connection is refused?
#3 You need time to scan the full IP range, durring this time some nodes will go offline, while others come online.

tl;dr You can never have an accurate number.
4091  Other / Meta / Re: Hi a newbie here need response. on: December 15, 2015, 09:09:03 AM
I come to know about this forum on google and also found very informative things here. I would like to stay here for long time.
-snip-

Welcome. For the sake of others that come here to find valuable information, please stay away from giving out tech support for now[1]. Its ok to have no idea and questions, its not ok to give advice based on this.

I think the rest was covered by pedrog.

4092  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Active Connections on: December 15, 2015, 09:07:50 AM
Try a new wallet should boost your active connections on the wallet.

No. Im not sure if are suggesting OP switches to a different software or a different wallet.dat file. Either way, its not going to influence the number of connections positivly.

If you use a different programm the number of connections are 0, because you no longer run bitcoin core.

If you use a different wallet.dat file you have to close bitcoin core and establish new connections, so again you start at 0.
4093  Other / Meta / Re: Is it the nut-shell or the Nut ? you are dealing with. on: December 15, 2015, 09:02:47 AM
IMHO its perfectly fine to change a rating at a later time if new information are available. Lets say you are happy with a trade and leave a positive feedback. Now you find out that the account was bought and you think that buying accounts is about the worst thing one can do here. Why should you not change your rating? Should you add a negative instead? You cant take a rating without context. Apparently for smooth its important to give out only a few ratings that have an impact.

4095  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Vanitygen: Vanity bitcoin address generator/miner [v0.22] on: December 14, 2015, 09:51:48 PM

The longest I found is 1vanityybUbbYsiJjAGiNK7vdJkNCqm2e. I didnt search for bubby though, that was just luck.

That was a unique stroke of luck! I mined some addresses for a shitcoin and got "sux" in there totally by accident. Can't remember if I still have that one or not.

How long did it take you to find vanity? and what hardware did you use to find it?  Im only getting 1.3mkey/s. Maybe need to use gpu too.

Not sure how long exactly, I didnt time it, but it was done over night. Nvidia GTX 970 does 28-36Mk/s depending on the settings.

Good show, That put that to rest then . Wink

Its a simplified view, someone with a better understanding of probability distributions might be willing to correct me, but I think the ballpark will be the same.

It seems that 'Beyond Internet' in the Technical section isn't available to users such as me. Which sub-forum is it in?

Was probably removed for some reason.
Well it isn't in the mod log, so must've happened quite some time ago. Here's a cached view in case someone is interested.
Edit: Having a look at the cached thread, seems the thread was mainly spam

I guess the other thread by Jappa was deleted as well. I always wondered what that was about, but some of the links were actually helpful. Anyway, removed that as well.
