4081  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Live Liars Data Collection on: April 03, 2022, 06:35:41 AM
I don't think you can say that for sure. Given that on Ledger devices you can enter a passphrase without opening the bitcoin app, then clearly it can still access the seed phrase and perform operations on it, which will include potentially deriving public keys. Given it is closed source, we can't say for sure this isn't happening.

That's true.

I think the best option is to have your basic wallet completely empty and only store coins behind additional, temporary passphrases. If you then only unlock your wallet but never enter a passphrase before connecting to Ledger Live for updates, and only open your passphrased wallets when connected to your own Electrum server or similar, then this should (but again, we can't be certain) prevent the public keys from your passphrased wallets being leaked during an update.

Alternatively have a dummy seed phrase which you enter to the device prior to any updates, and then restore your real seed phrase after.

Actually I find the best option to have a cold storage and not a hardware wallet, especially a closed source one. Convenience has its price and that price is unfortunately rising.

Using a different seed phrase will not work because in order to change the seed you have to enter wrong PIN 3 times and reset the device. The result is that the apps have to be reinstalled at the moment the device has your HD seed and this procedure is done with (drums) Ledger Live. Yeah... Sad
4082  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Address generator and validation from a file on: April 02, 2022, 07:08:41 AM
The idea is very simple and most likely is on github, but I can’t find it.
Bitcoin address generator based on 12 phrases (address;private key) and checking the address from the list of all addresses (addresses.txt) when matching addresses are found, writing them to the file found.txt (address;private key)
Maybe someone met a similar implementation?

I guess that your point is searching for a collision / attempt of steal some coins.
One reason for such tools' scarcity would be that they are expected to be useless: there are far too many addresses that can be generated, hence all you'll do is to waste energy.
Another reason for the scarcity is that they may be seen pretty much as illegal.

However, @BitMaxz pointed out some tools. Maybe you'd elaborate what's all this about and maybe somebody can tell you whether it worth the effort or not.

PS. From what I know, both "Bitcoin challenge" and "Bitcoin alpha" (last one probably scam) are not related to HD wallets.
4083  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2022-03-28] Grayscale Threatens Legal Action if SEC Rejects Bitcoin ETF bid on: April 02, 2022, 06:32:39 AM
As their attorney [not that I am of course lol], I would say that seems very subjective and consequently arbitrary.

Indeed, it's subjective. Whether a market is mature or not cannot be properly quantified. However, I find that it's pretty much a requirement, else, as @bbc.reporter correctly noted, market manipulation would cause a lot of drama (and maybe lawsuits too). But is Forex or stock market really-really mature and with no manipulations? Prove it! Grin Grin

And that's why my point was that the only ones with actual gains will be the lawyers with fat paychecks.

I'd also argue that having an ETF (or more than 1) would help stabilize the prices because the volume could increase significantly.

This is imho wishful thinking. If there are no sellers, the volumes cannot rise. Even more, if the volumes will be correctly reported, they may go even lower.
Also keep in mind that (afaik) there are 2 kinds of ETFs and only one is backed with actual BTC reserve, hence with correct effect on the market. And by correct I mean that some will try to manipulate the bitcoin market so they can earn more on the financial one.
Market stabilization may be achieved if more institutions will invest and the price will be even higher. But I cannot be that sure.

I would also make the argument to the Biden administration (Ditto Obama and Trump before): does the US want to be at the forefront of crypto or lagging?  Does the US want to be taking the same side as authoritarians the world over or supporting people who want the freedom to make their own decisions?  (That wouldn't help with this admin).

I don't feel US far behind, with or without the ETF. This was a good argument before Michael Saylor and Co...

---
Yes, I've plaid devil's advocate here. I am not against ETF, but imho one can build a good case whether is pro or against it.

4085  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Combining Blue Wallet and a watch-only Electrum wallet on: April 01, 2022, 02:36:06 PM
You could use an USB stick instead, but those aren't read only.

Tails by default doesn't allow persistence, so, unless he doesn't play with things he shouldn't, he should be fine even with an USB stick.
4086  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [Report] Malicious Link Received via DM on: April 01, 2022, 02:30:05 PM
1. It's not the first time I see that kind of links.
2. Put the malicious link under code tags if you really want to show it.
3. I hope that you did report the message.
4. I'd say that the board should be Scam accusations
4087  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Live Liars Data Collection on: April 01, 2022, 02:23:53 PM
If you don't start the Bitcoin app (the one installed inside your HW) in Ledger Live they don't know your xpub. So imho you can update without them knowing everything about you. Am I missing something?!
Of course, if you use their wallet, ... that's entirely your fault.
4088  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: April 01, 2022, 01:55:36 PM

4091  Other / Meta / Re: IQ Leaderboard on: April 01, 2022, 09:48:20 AM
I am trying so hard however the IQ increase is very low  Roll Eyes

I guess that you have to post a lot and take advantage of the bug there's in the system.
4092  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Goodbye, privacy, goodbye, it was nice while it lasted. on: April 01, 2022, 09:42:43 AM
I am already using hardware wallet, what if Trezor is forced to enforce these rules if they want to do business?
A software update from them which ruins our privacy, this ain't difficult if the government really wants it to be.

You do have a point here, but I think that they can easily implement (if not done already, I don't have Trezor) in a way that the wallet/accounts part of the suite doesn't interact with the HW if you don't want to, at maintenance/firmware updates. The wallet part will have to comply, but you can use Electrum instead.

And if the hardware wallet makers choose to ruin their credibility and business by being overzealous at asking KYC / reporting, there's always the choice of using proper cold storage (although it may not be great for non-technical people, I know...)
4093  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Combining Blue Wallet and a watch-only Electrum wallet on: April 01, 2022, 09:27:34 AM
Watch-only wallet does not contain your private key, you can not spend using such wallet, only used for tracking your transactions.

I think that OP meant to use the old iPhone as cold storage, create the transactions with the watch only wallet, sign with the iPhone, broadcast with the watch only wallet. Doable.

@unknowncustomer , I've made a topic on pretty much the same use case, there are pluses and minuses, I recommend you read through all the answers there: Old phone as cold storage?; you could start with post #4 there.
4094  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk IQ Improvement Service $5 only on: April 01, 2022, 07:57:09 AM
Finally a proper service on this forum... although... your IQ doesn't look good either, so I'm not sure.
Also, you forgot to mention whether you offer any guarantee and if you accept escrow. What happens if at the end of the day my IQ will drop even more?
4095  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: newbie invest on: April 01, 2022, 07:48:58 AM
What's wrong with BNB itself? That's one of the best altcoins out there, is rather hold my BNB or trade one for BTC, BNB is a diamond on its own, you can keep it and find another means to buy BTC.

For start.. it's an altcoin. Altcoins have an overall long history of disappointing on long term.
Second, it's Binance's coin and the history has shown that exchanges don't stay on top forever.
4096  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: April 01, 2022, 07:46:32 AM
I am done with all this shit.
I cannot stand the up and downs of this market.
I am going to sell all my corn in the next few hours, buy a nice car, and enjoying life outside.
After the EU ban, bitcoin is not going to go anywhere.
I will miss you.

Do I have the right to not believe you?  Grin

Bug: where's the IQ-score when I click "All" to read all pages?

I think that the actual bug is that the question doesn't change when the page loses focus  Grin
4098  Other / Meta / Re: Is shilling links allowed now? on: April 01, 2022, 07:37:24 AM
Might've been a duplicate report as well though I wasn't able to verify that that's the case.

I am 99.9% sure I didn't report that twice. I've looked into my history back then too.
I have only one post reported twice, but that's in 2 different days for 2 different problems (first it was off topic and got moved correctly, second is for plagiarism and it's unhandled).

But again, I'm not worried much. I know that most (Cheesy) of you guys (and girls?) are human and prone to mistakes now and then.
4099  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2022-03-28] Grayscale Threatens Legal Action if SEC Rejects Bitcoin ETF bid on: April 01, 2022, 07:31:22 AM
They could certainly argue it is arbitrary and capricious and certainly if the SEC didn't have a valid reason a court could impose a remedy.  Given the political nature of the left-leaning judges, much would depend on the judge that hears the case initially and then which group of circuit court judges hears the appeal, unless it was en banc.

Iirc SEC has already rejected ETFs for the reason that Bitcoin market is not mature enough, telling that the price fluctuates too much and the exchanges are showing overly inflated fake volumes.
And while I don't like to hear it, they're right about that. On the other hand, is that a good enough reason for rejecting the ETF? That may be a lottery game with the only winners being the lawyers paid big for the lawsuit.
4100  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Goodbye, privacy, goodbye, it was nice while it lasted. on: April 01, 2022, 07:18:31 AM
Damn, can't we just say we are sending money from one wallet of ours to other? They won't know shit TBH.

We don't have to tell them anything. At all.
As @pooya87 said, everybody will just switch to the decentralized platforms. We can (and should!) use hardware wallets without their crappy wallet platforms and go on.

The only problem I see is that this will slow down the interconnection between Bitcoin and the financial world.

So it clearly looks bad, but I have high hopes there will be plenty of ways to avoid EU crap when we want to and this may actually make people start using Bitcoin.. more properly.
