(off-topic, sorry) I think also Luke-Jr's proposal
Quote from: Luke-Jr
Why is it so hard to simply disallow a master-chain block from "vouching for" more than one block in each aux chain? :/
could use elaboration.  I take it to mean, have the aux chain software enforce uniqueness of its work-proving hashes.  I think that would work too and is a bit more elegant than sticking the value in the aux chain.
I think the latter is a better solution: it doesn't require looking up the hash in all the past blocks.

If have multiple miners (computers), i can just use one address to mine right?

Is there a problem doing that?
No problem

Probably by hand once every 2-3 days until I get the new system done. Retroactive NMC address registrations will only apply until that initial "week" is over, after which registrations will only affect future mining.

you dont need to register your bitcoin address. but you do have to send some shares.  i think , unknown address means that you shares have not been recognised yet.

Oh ok,..

Am i doing it right regarding the signature?
Copy the output including the "=" at the end?
If it says you're good, you're good.
4125  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Please help test: version 0.5 release candidate 1 on: October 15, 2011, 04:38:08 PM
FWIW, I am seeing reports (both my Windows binaries and also people building their own Ubuntu binaries) of 0.5.0rc1 corrupting wallets (both old and newly-made)!
4126  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [460 GH/s] Eligius pool: ~0Fee SMPPS, no reg, RollNtime, hop OK, BTC+NMC merged! on: October 15, 2011, 02:17:40 PM
After i downloaded the 0.5rc windows binary and ran it , it required to have bitcoin.conf. What do i put in the conf file?
It told you what to put in the conf file...

Can i still keep the 0.4 version installed? or do i have to uninstall it?
Doesn't matter. Just be sure to BACKUP YOUR WALLET.DAT. At least one person reported that 0.5.0rc1 corrupted their wallet.dat, so seriously, DO THE BACKUP.

Problem setting up namecoins,

dled and running bitcoin-qt-0.5.0rc1-755e2819-signmessage_gui, but under "recieve coins " tab address that i mine on eligius isnt there, i use it normaly for recieving from other pools and xchanges, and is listed in transactions as incoming address, but its not listed in recieve coins tab

what now?
Worst case scenario, you should be able to type it in (you can get to the screen from the File menu).

Per request, Eligius now has a NMC donation address: Mx5FUQn8oBCoRdyBTUFu9JW5SsdEku56PP

First round of Namecoin mining has been set from 1318268414..1318608288 (UNIX times), where we have earned at least PPS value. Therefore, the first batch of NMC payouts have been sent at 100% PPS to all registered miners. It's still NOT too late to register for this first "round". MtGox is having issues-- could users mining with a MtGox address who want to register please PM me your address so I have an idea of whose NMC I need to set aside if MtGox is too late?
4130  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Why do you mine on deepbit? on: October 14, 2011, 05:12:09 AM
The 1 Month Challenge......

I feel comfortable enough to mine for an entire month long WITHOUT A WITHDRAWL and feel confident in my funds still being there after 30 days. How about we both try this with about 3 GH/s using PPS....me on BTCG and YOU on your 0% Fee Pool.
Let's see who can sleep at night after the second week and who can not (while pretending BTC=$25 USD/BTC.....LOL).
Eligius won't even let miners do this, despite being one of the oldest pools around. Wink

(Mere) pools have no business carrying balances.

After I do the signed message and put in the stuff, it said everything was good to go.... but my 'account' page looks the same and still has the link for the namecoin setup.  Should it still be that way, or am I good now?
You're good.
4132  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Why do you mine on deepbit? on: October 14, 2011, 03:45:07 AM
While Eligus and Ars aren't PPS I have never had a significant fraction of my total earnings in the buffer.  If either of them went bankrupt tomorrow my lifetime loss rate would likely be <1% far cheaper than a guaranteed loss rate of 7% or 10% (in fees).
Both Ars and Eligius have positive buffers right now, and have therefore paid 100% of PPS to every miner on them. So 0% loss. Since at least Eligius's buffer is huge, the chance of being paid less than 100% of straight PPS is extremely small.
4133  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Merged Mining is NOT ready and should be stopped until it is on: October 14, 2011, 02:51:36 AM
Well so far it seems to work...
Really? What big pools support it?
slush, apparently

Eligius also (well I guess that is a medium pool).
I meant other pools :p

(obviously Eligius is running my custom implementation)

He also uses a custom implementation.
4135  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Why do you mine on deepbit? on: October 14, 2011, 02:25:50 AM
I'm really shocked about how many people still mine on deepbit: big fees, no 8-decimal pays, no particular clear interface, no repayment after leaving, risk of deepbit getting more than 50% hash power... with the result it is the most powerful pool.

On the other hand, somebody could think they are using the income in good DDoS-reluctant counter measures, so those disadvantages are a worthy price for security. But the early catastrophe proves this is not true.

That is why I launch the poll, because I'm really curious about the matter of advantages mining in deepbit, even as a backup pool. Feel free to answer here, if your option is not in the poll.

They payout 8 decimals... 3% isn't that big of a fee if you factor in invalids being paid out. The interface is alot easier to figure than some of these smaller pools. And for the most part its a stable pool.

You do understand paying invalids in a proportional pool is simply a marketing gimmick.  The pool isn't giving you anything.  Your invalids are paid but so is the entire pools invalids.  Thus your share of the block reward doesn't change.  i.e. if you had 1% of pool's hashing power w/o invalids and your invalid rate is similar to pool average than you have 1% of pool's hashing power w/ invalids.  Either way you are getting 1% of the block (minus 3% fee).

The only time that paying invalids is a net positive is for people who can't get it together and have massively high invalids.  If your invalid rate is significantly higher than the pool average you are coming out ahead.  Conversely if you are like me with <0.05% invalid rate then you come out behind.
Pretty sure Deepbit and he mean invalid blocks. Ie, if their block is invalid, Deepbit still pays 48.50 BTC out to miners

Okay, I'm trying to figure out how to sign the NMC thing, but for the life of me I can't figure out where to put the libraries of your patched .5 rc1
Same directory.
4137  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [460 GH/s] Eligius pool: ~0Fee SMPPS, no reg, RollNtime, hop OK, BTC+NMC merged! on: October 13, 2011, 11:47:01 PM
Anyone have a working 0.5.0 release for OSX ? Can't get mine to compile Sad Can't seem to find miniupnpc/* even though I've copied it into the source tree. Dunno whats up with that.
If you can undefine USE_UPNP, it doesn't need miniupnp at all. Not sure how you'd do that on Mac, but on *nix it's: make USE_UPNP= bitcoind
If you manage to get binaries built, I'm sure other Mac users would appreciate it if you could share it Smiley

I dont mean to be a pain Luke, but I see other pools are already paying out NMC, do you think you could give us a rough estimate as to when we might see NMC payouts start?
So far, there's a lot more registrations than originally anticipated based on the poll... and presumably more to come as Windows/Mac/MtGox miners register. I could split it proportionally fairly easily, I expect, but I'd like to try to meet the full PPS (even though many of the valid-on-Bitcoin shares were probably stale on Namecoin) if possible-- but to do that, payouts need to wait until we're sure everyone interested has registered, or else there might not be enough to give them their fair share. That's why I set the maximum time limit of a week on registration.

I've just finished adding a patched Bitcoin-Qt with message signing functionality to the registration page, including a Windows binary. Hopefully this will take care of the Windows users. Working with MagicalTux to get a signmessage function added to MtGox for those users. Mac users will probably have to fend for themselves, as I have no idea at all how I'd do a Mac build. :/
4138  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Why do you mine on deepbit? on: October 13, 2011, 11:35:44 PM
The difference between PPS and SMPPS... with SMPPS, there's some delay/risk if the pool's buffer runs dry; with pure PPS, if the pool's "buffer" runs dry, the pool shuts down and your miners are idle Wink

Besides, with Eligius's buffer usually about 1000 BTC (and only ever hitting 0 for very brief single rounds), there is no practical difference unless you're so broke that you need that 0.00001 BTC right this instant to pay for your kids' food.
4139  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Please help test: version 0.5 release candidate 1 on: October 13, 2011, 11:28:38 PM
Not sure what trouble BlueMatt et al are having, but I managed to build some Windows binaries. No guarantees, backup your wallet, etc...

Also, note that these aren't technically 0.5.0rc1, because I built with the very minor makefile changes made afterward (commits a1e0bb5a and e44a00ae) as well as having to hack up the build files more to make it work with my mingw setup (Gentoo crossdev i686-pc-mingw w/ GCC 4.4).

I didn't bother to build with UPnP support either cuz I was too lazy to cross-compile miniupnp (and I just needed the signmessage functionality).
