421  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: How important is a good exhaust fan? on: August 31, 2011, 06:24:28 PM
With two cards, if you're getting a lot of heat from the PS and no heat from the other exhaust fan then the heat you're feeling coming out of the PS could actually be FROM the PS.

Do you know the quality of the PS?  Is it a "cheapie" or something more premium?  I ask because cheap power supplies have pretty sucky efficiency ratings, so the more power your system needs to more heat your PS generates.  It you're using a budget PS I'd definitely consider upgrading to a more premium PS with dual fans and/or "80 PLUS Certified" at least (80 PLUS Gold/Platinum is better, but more expensive).
The heat is coming out of both fans because there's a lot of heat built up in the case from the GPUs.
The PSU is a new GX 650w from cooler master. Not the best quality but it's never usually hot so I assume the heat is just heat from the GPUs. I believe that PSU is 80+ Bronze certified. Is that any good? I was on a bit of a budget. I don't want to spend a year paying off my rig so I didn't really want to spend a lot of money.

EDIT: Although I really want to buy another GPU but I feel uneasy about whether i'll be able to pay it off or not.
422  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / How important is a good exhaust fan? on: August 31, 2011, 06:09:38 PM
Hi guys.
I'm running a mining rig at the moment with 2 cards, fans at 80% and temps at about 72C.
It's a basic case with a 120mm fan at the front, pulling air in, and an 80mm fan at the back, exhausting air out, along with the PSU.
The fans are very cheap (eBay quality) so I've recently ordered a better 120mm fan to replace the front intake fan, which should hopefully help my temperatures.

My question is should I upgrade my 80mm fan to a stronger one too?

The reason I ask is because I've noticed there's a fair bit of hot air also being exhausted through the PSU and I don't want to risk blowing my PSU through not properly cooling it or anything.

Thanks

Yeah I'd happily donate 2% of my shares to this project purely because of the massive benefits it gives.
Also would I be correct in saying that since it's p2p there's no bitcoind server to pay for?

I love the idea of this pool, but one thing that personally puts me off it is the 0.5% fee to forrestv.
It's negligible I know, and I understand that you probably want a piece of the "pool operator pie" with some other pools charging 2% and things like that. But wouldn't it be better to have an auto-donate feature instead? (as in, auto-donating 1% of your shares to a forrestv donation worker)

I know I'd personally prefer that over a fee, mainly because it's not forced upon people. And you'd probably generate more from this "opt-out auto-donate system" than you would with a 0.5% fee.

The project to me seems to symbolize freedom from the mining pool operators and this fee kinda spoils it for me.

Any thoughts on switching to this?

I haven't read into instawallet. If it was more convienient then I may store 0.5BTC or so. But in reality I can make payments just as easily with the official bitcoin client already, which is much more secure as it's not (browser delivered) JavaScript, so I'd just use that for peace of mind. I can see why it has advantages but I personally prefer security over usability.

EDIT: although saying that, there's nothing to stop someone injecting JavaScript into my browser via a MitM attack regardless of whether I'm using a bitcoinJS based site or not, so yes I think I would probably use it for micro payments.

ive always been a fan of yours bruce. In fact I found out about this from your mailing list. The whole pattaya thing looks really bad though - In my very humble opinion I think you should take a step out of the spot light for awhile. God knows Bitcoin as a whole as well as BTC values have suffered enough at the hands of scandal. We really don't need another scandal right now since we have been below $10 USD since the "expo".

btw I like your flickr folder, this one is particularly funny.

thanks for your time.
good luck!

This sounds like a great idea.
I do a fair bit of web coding so I'm up for helping in any way I can.
428  Other / Off-topic / Re: an appeal to reason on: August 30, 2011, 07:45:53 PM
This looks like a great idea but in practise I wouldn't trust it for handling any transactions or wallet data. Block exploring and stats would be aided greatly by this but on the security side of things this seems very susceptable to hacking and man-in-the-middle attacks.
429  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Anyone Using This Power Supply For Mining ? on: August 30, 2011, 07:35:39 PM
I have the coolermaster GX 650w. I made a thread about upgrading to 3 cards with this PSU on here a couple weeks ago actually. I'm running a 5770 and 5830 at the moment. Pulling 300w from the wall. I see no reason why adding another card would fry the PSU. It should be okay.

Link to my thread about the GX 650w with 3 cards: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=38721.0

Hope this helps.

EDIT: If you do end up running 3 cards with this PSU please do let me know how it goes!

This sounds great.
Maybe just a roundup of the latest bitcoin news and project developments and a market summary would be a great start. Add some guests ontop of that and you'll have a great show. Lemme know when the first episode is.
431  Other / Off-topic / Re: Two interesting emails I received today... on: August 30, 2011, 06:41:43 PM
True or not, everything in this entire thread is disgusting (MyBitcoin, Pattaya and the other allegations).
Is there no moderation at all on this forum?

Regardless, this is a major scar to this forum if anything. If the media pick up on all of this shit it's going to be yet another huge blow to the PR effort of bitcoin and we'll be yet another huge leap away from bitcoin being viewed as a successful currency.
I think whether it's true or not, Bruce should probably put a halt to the bitcoin show as it's only going to harm the community further, which is sad that it's came down to this as the bitcoin show was one of a kind really, even if some people did dislike it. And also the MyBitcoin suspects should be persued however possible and not forgotton.

Hopefully this doesn't hurt bitcoin as badly as I'm expecting.

Thanks for the various responses. Sure makes an interesting read.
433  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Open-Case mining rigs exposed to short circuit threats from spiders! on: August 29, 2011, 10:15:05 PM
Definitely not infested but there's the average amount lurking around in there.

It does seem incredibly unlikely. There's not much airflow since it's only 1 rig. Just two case fans and the CPU/GPU/PSU fans (it's a half open case, rather than caseless). Probably nothing to worry about but I'd rather not have my house burned down by spiders.
434  Bitcoin / Mining / Open-Case mining rigs exposed to short circuit threats from spiders! on: August 29, 2011, 09:49:44 PM
This sounds stupid, but after moving my open-case mining rig from my room into the garage/basement, I started thinking about whether it was a bad idea since there's quite a few spiders lurking in there which could possibly (albeit highly unlikely) cause a short circuit.

Now obviously putting the case on would be a fantastic start at preventing this ridiculous problem, but what are your thoughts on this?
435  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoinsms.eu / The New Bitcoin SMS Service / HOT on: August 29, 2011, 08:30:45 PM
Looks incredibly scammy.. Any proof that this even works?

Stop being a dumb ass!

Test the damn service before you start trolling! Angry

and the answer to your stupid question is YES!

Test the service and possibly throw away my bitcoins? Nah I'm good.

I've been having a few problems with getting data from the MtGox API within C# (works fine in my browser, just not C#) so I'll try this out. Thanks!

438  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bot to operate a price bloc to stabilize price of BitCoins on: August 29, 2011, 12:15:53 PM
I do want to see bitcoin succeed as a "day-to-day" currency, don't get me wrong. I just think that this is not the way to go about it.
And no, I'm not actually in this just to make a quick profit. You definitely have some good points in this post though that should be built upon. I personally just don't like the idea of an entity manipulating the market.

I don't have a lot of knowledge in economics but I'd like to say that the price should stabilize eventually on it's own, given enough time.
But as you say that might be too late and bitcoin might've been palmed off as a pryamid scheme by retailers by then. But only time will tell. I'd rather ride it out than try to manipulate it I guess.
439  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bot to operate a price bloc to stabilize price of BitCoins on: August 29, 2011, 01:19:26 AM
It's kind of funny how you think my online handle actually means something.

It doesn't. It's just a method of identification, but anyway. This to me still sounds like you want to make a bot to control/manipulate the price. As you mentioned in the first post, it'd influence traders to move prices towards this wall set by the bot. Thus seems like an attempt to control the market and I honestly don't see what's to be gained by this.

The price would not go below the wall set by the bot, that's true. But you'd need a fuck ton of money to make it work anyway, and there's no guarantee to people that that price will always be there (just like there's no guarantee that your bitcoins are safe in an online wallet..) and people will see that.
440  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bot to operate a price bloc to stabilize price of BitCoins on: August 28, 2011, 12:48:10 PM
<sarcasm> An entity to game the free market, what a great (and original) idea! </sarcasm>
