421  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: First BFL ASIC! on: April 02, 2013, 11:29:50 PM
My vote is this is an engineering sample.  This is not "shipped" to customer.  "Shipped" indicates a full working unit in the customers hands at the customer premesis.  Clearly this is not.

"at least one BFL customer" - debatable as this occured at BFL's location, the device is not actually with the customer
"with a bitcointalk.org forum account established prior to the bet's opening date" - OK
"shall post detailed and credible photos of the device on the forum" - OK
"including photos of it operating, and report its hashrate." - OK
"This customer cannot be a BFL employee." - debatable at this point

As for 75% of advertised hashrate, the answer is NO.

"Advertised" was 60Ghash.  Just because they revised it to 30GH at the last second doesn't meet the definition when the bets were placed.  23GH is 76% of 30GH.

GRASPING.  AT.  STRAWS.
422  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitsyncom what went wrong with the first batch shipping on: April 02, 2013, 04:40:13 PM
You can take as certain that nearly 300 Avalons are in the field.  Just look at the network hashrate during the time they were shipped.

I don't understand how anyone can come to that conclusion.  ASICMINER has units out.  BTC is at $100+ even GPUs are profitable right now so there are people turning their rigs back on.

I just hope this downtime to re-arrange means Batch 2 goes smoothly.
423  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon Components & Spare Parts Discussion on: March 29, 2013, 04:33:22 PM
I would be interested to know from someone who has a unit, how the power leads are setup.  The big question in my mind is +12V Rails.   I assume the power supply that came with the unit is a single rail.  If you did use a multi-rail PS, how would you connect up the rails?   Of course it could be different for 2, 4, or 6 rail PSUs I suppose.

Perhaps the safe bet is to only use single rail PSUs.
424  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: If your University had a supercomputer on campus... on: March 29, 2013, 12:29:45 AM
Lets look at the numbers a little better:

First off, an i5 or i7 only gets about 5Mhash around 3.3Ghz.  Essentially you can figure 1Mhash per core, but considering a lot of supercomputers use even weaker CPUs it could be much less.

http://www.top500.org/lists/

Lets take the 6th fastest supercomputer in the world - SuperMUC - iDataPlex DX360M4, Xeon E5-2680 8C 2.70GHz, Infiniband FDR as those would probably have similar performance to an i5 or i7.

Total cores:  147,456

So thats ~147Ghash.  Your schools computer is probably much much weaker.  But now consider TWO Avalon ASICs are 136Ghash.

Lets restate that:  The 6th fastest supercomputer in the world likely is around the speed of two Aavalon ASICs for bitcoin mining purposes.

Also note the stated power usage for this supercomputer is 3,422,670 watts.  That is a bit over $8K a day in electricity assuming $0.10kWh power costs.  (3,422,670/1000*0.10*24)  The Avalons will cost $2.88 per day.

Also note that will generate a bit over $900 in coins per day (at todays mtgox price and difficulty), but you (ie the school) would be losing over $7000/day in power costs alone.

Moral of the story:  Don't be an idiot.

12. Their COO is taking a significant portion(10%+) of the first batch of chips for himself. His interests are completely at odds with customers who's money he has held for 9 months.

Wow I didn't realize this.  Go Team Avalon!  Contrast:

"Fun fact: none of the Avalon team have their own mining units (outside of test units)."
427  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Interview with Yifu Guo from Avalon Asic on: March 26, 2013, 11:02:57 PM
nice interview but batch 3 didn't sold out in 15 min Tongue still you can buy now .

Because some people added 100 to their cart, and then these holds didn't expire for quite some time.
428  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon Asic - 'not newbie friendly' - how hard is it? on: March 26, 2013, 10:58:16 PM
Well if this all confuses you, download cgminer and run it today on a GPU.  Things will make more sense.

If worse comes to worse, join the IRC channel, or use a desktop sharing site like http://join.me to have a more knowledgeable person help you out.
429  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: http://www.bitcoinavalon.com Waiting official confirmation !!! on: March 26, 2013, 10:55:51 PM
Paypal payement : Scam.

Which leads me to say BTC Payment = Legit?

This is amazing if you think about it.  Leading US Online Vendor Payment processor as the requested payment method = SCAM.  Bitcoin = LEGIT.  Who'd a though this could even be a comment a couple years ago... LOL
430  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Batch 3 still goes in and out of stock - I have 45 BTC, anyone want to split? on: March 26, 2013, 07:44:06 PM
Yes Herodes and I have come to an agreement, best luck everyone on your own mining endeavors!

As title says.  Sitting on 45 coins need 30 more BTC to get a B3.

Will use my 5Ghash+ GPU farm and Batch 2 Avalon when it arrives to payback 10% more.  Or PM me for negotiations.

Looking to complete ASAP.  I make no attempt to hide my identity and have used this handle since 1997 and its tied to my real info...

EDIT:  Nevermind, found an investor... Thanks!
433  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Order placement help! on: March 26, 2013, 06:43:25 AM
Just FYI I got my Batch #2 the same way.  Was expired but only had a couple confirms.  I got the Avalon and the payment service email once I got 7 confirms and all is good!  (well as good as it gets until the unit arrives)
434  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Batch 3 still goes in and out of stock - I have 45 BTC, anyone want to split? on: March 26, 2013, 06:34:25 AM
No takers?  Sad.  111 units left.

I am serious about this, have 46BTC and change, would love to get a 3 or 4 unit and do 50/50...  As for post history, I was a longtime lurker (started mining in Aug 2011) and eventually decided to join the forums.  I've done a few BTC transactions with others on the board (sold/bought GPUs).

This is a great deal for someone who wants a unit but not the responsibility.  I already have one Avalon to babysit, might as well be two.

As for trust, I made no attempt to hide my identity and welcome you to google my handle - heck I'll PM you my info!
435  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Batch 3 still goes in and out of stock - I have a 45 BTC, anyone want to split? on: March 26, 2013, 02:42:10 AM
0.06/ KWH is actually pretty cheap, especially for EU and NA. (unless you're talking about russian hydro @ 0.02)

Yep mined 600 BTC with dozen or so GPUs over the year+ but sold most BTC much too cheap!  Hindsight it always 20/20.
436  Bitcoin / Hardware / Batch 3 still goes in and out of stock - I have 45 BTC, anyone want to split? on: March 26, 2013, 02:37:00 AM
See title.  I have a B#2 order and a place to host @ $0.06KWH but B3 is too expensive.  Need about 30 more BTC to make this happen.  I will liquidate my remaining BTC and split 60/40 profits on a B3 rig hosted at my place ($0.06KWH thanks Eastern WA).

Looking for one investor.  Terms negotiable, but looking for same as "other" hosting deals mentioned here...

PM me NOW!
437  Bitcoin / Hardware / Announcement from Avalon on: March 25, 2013, 04:37:41 AM
As a B#2 customer I just received this email update - my first email ever since the original order confirmation:

Batch one have mostly finished shipping, aside from a small number of orders with incomplete/wrong address or phone numbers. We've been getting these orders back from our shipper and getting in touch with people to update their information, this is a fairly quick process. If you have not gotten your order, especially people in Germany or Iceland that uses special characters in their addresses. I highly suggest you open a ticket with our support indicating your order number, full address with phone numbers, so if there is a problem we can pull up new information quickly and let shipping proceed. This also applies to batch two customers, please make sure your phone number is correct, and there is no typo in the address.

Speaking of batch two, we are unfortunately going to be late. This should not be too surprising as the delay from batch one will no doubt carry over. This delay also caused us to make drastic adjustments to our project timeline dealing with anything with a lead time like parts purchasing. We plan to start shipping majority of batch two orders starting on 15th of April. Not all the news is bad news however, originally around this period we are suppose to take this time to organize, make some changes and install a brand new SMT line in our facility. This upgrade will effectively double our production capacity, it enable us to put Avalon into the hands of our customer even faster. The new line is currently scheduled to come online during the last week of April. We expect batch two and three to ship much faster than batch one mainly there is no Chinese New Year and we have overcome the problems encountered in shipping batch one.

On to batch three, we at Avalon did not even wish to sell another batch. If you recall, our original plan was to produce only one batch, sell chips to thwart the centralization of mining, but due to the lackluster performance of our competitors we are here today as the exact centralization we tried to decouple. In addition, this delay is eating into our timeline for this project's future goals and various other projects. To be frank: it was a simple decision of build a mining farm ourselves and mine for a month or so to get the funding for things like the SMT line and next generation development vs. raise the price and sell units trying to get the money earlier to counterbalance the delay we have had. So, we came up with some terms and left the choice to the community.

More details on the F.A.Q. section of the Site. There will also be a follow up newsletter on chips for sale and the trade-in program.
438  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Avalon] Batch 3 almost ready! on: March 23, 2013, 10:20:31 AM
now let s compare with bfl

still the avalon is better?

You order BFL you are #20,001 in line, for a product that is yet to exist.  You order with Avalon and you are #901 for a product that has already shipped 300...

439  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon batch#2 Re-open 2/18 on: March 18, 2013, 01:00:18 AM
So did batch #2 start shipping on the 5th? If not, has Avalon revised batch 2 start ship date?

I think we can assume NO as all of the Batch #1 customers don't yet have their systems, even some in China it seems (thus no customs holds).

+1 to the question though.

Would be nice to know better information on progress through BATCH#1 and estimated shipping start for B#2.  It seems to be Avalon has been about a month behind, I mean how long did it take after Jeff got his for any other units to really start appearing?  I just wish we knew how far into B#1 are we?  50? 100? 200?  That's the deal no one really knows.

440  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [AVALON] - I got my ASIC Thread (Batch #2) on: February 24, 2013, 09:59:37 PM
It would be nice if we saw more Batch #1 Avalons out there...

Isn't it a little early to start a Batch #2 thread?

(note I have a Batch #2 order)
