421  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will Bitcoin be too big to fail? on: October 24, 2017, 08:05:51 AM
Bitcoin is definitely nowhere near the size and importance of Wall Street, and not going to be in foreseeable future. And nothing is too big to fail. However, I think that the larger it gets the smaller is a chance of a big failure. When it was just a toy of a few tech-savvy enthusiasts, it could disappear without a trace. Now it is becoming an instrument of larger entities. It is becoming less volatile because now there are "big whales" wiling to buy huge amounts when the price drops, so it drops less. But it is just an opinion...

Thanks for the 6% airdrop!
423  Other / Off-topic / Re: Why does not everyone invest in cryptocurrency? on: October 23, 2017, 06:46:08 AM
Mining requires considerable investments in hardware and may be not very profitable (or not profitable at all), depending on future coin prices, mining difficulty adjustments and electricity costs. Especially mining BTC now requires large-scale mining farms with specialized equipment. It often said that simply buying and holding is a better option.

Cryptocurrencies are a high-risk investment. Yes, the BTC price continues to rise and there are no immediate dangers, but it is still much more risky than gold or other conservative investments. Do not invest more than you can afford to loose.

424  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTC hold or convert to altcoins? BTC GOld convert to altcoins or Hodl? on: October 23, 2017, 06:35:46 AM
There is an opinion that BTC price is going to fall after the fork(s), but I will hold my coins anyway and will try to buy more at the dips. However, selling some amount may be an option. As for Bitcoin Gold, nobody can predict its future now. I will not sell immediately after the fork, since claiming procedure may be complex and I am much more concerned about not loosing my BTC than about getting Bitcoin Gold quickly. Depending on the situation I may sell it for BTC or USD afterwards, or hold in order to diversify, if Bitcoin Gold is going to be popular.
425  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you use BTC as a digital currency for paying online ? on: October 20, 2017, 06:32:06 AM
No, and the only possible case where I can imagine doing so in the near future is buying VPS or VPN anonymously. Credit cards are much more convenient for online shopping. BTC transactions are very slow and the fees are high (or at least were before the Segwit). I think of BTC as an investment only, a kind of "digital gold".
426  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can it be true ? on: October 19, 2017, 09:37:44 AM
OK - I must have misunderstood something major here.

As I understand it - I buy BITCOINS where I lose 6% of my money right off the bat...

I place my trade and hopefully I close with a profit...

I sell the BITCOINS I have for USD.

Now I look for another entry - assuming I am trading...When I enter - I lose another 6% Huh

How can one ever make any money with these charges ?

Any help greatly appreciated !

Andy

Commissions for trading on exchanges are much lower, about 0.2% or so. Fiat deposit and withdrawal fees maybe be large, although they usually are below 4%, not 6%. BTC deposits are free, BTC withdrawal fees are usually 0.001 BTC, less than $6 by the current rate. But if you are trading, you do not need to deposit and withdraw after every trade.
427  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Buy bitcoin for 10USD, transaction fees is 6USD on: October 19, 2017, 07:48:41 AM
Hi,

Lets say I want to buy bitcoin for 10USD. Do I have to pay 6USD as transaction fees? How do you trade really small values of bitcoins?(Withdraw from one bitcoin wallet to another?)

You do not have to pay $6 for transaction fees, as far as I know, currently a typical fee is much less. However, if you buy bitcoin at an exchange, there is a withdrawal fee, which is usually 0.001 BTC, almost $6 at the current rate. So buying and withdrawing BTC in such small amounts is very wasteful.
428  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Confusion on Bitcoin Cash on: October 18, 2017, 12:24:31 PM
So the main thing I'm picking up is that I need to move my BTC to a BCC supporting wallet, is that the important first step?  I'm on Multibit Classic (i believe its known as, to me its 0.4   Cheesy ), so gather moving is a good idea anyway.  Then if necessary trade BCC through a BCC supporting exchange.

Some advise seen is to transfer BTC to new addresses, then filter the coins, bit concerned about bleeding transaction costs there, or is this insignificant?

No. You need to move your BTC to a new wallet (not supporting Bitcoin Cash) to effectively split the coins (moving BTC does not move Bitcoin Cash) and to protect the new private keys from exposure to a Cash-supporting wallet. Then you can use your old private keys (which still hold Bitcoin Cash at the old addresses) to get coins by importing them into a Cash-supporting wallet. Or you can import them without moving BTC, but it would mean that theoretically the software supporting Bitcoin Cash may be used to steal BTC. As far as I know, nobody reported such fraud yet, but, if you have a significant amount of BTC, it is better to make extra precautions.
429  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: All exchanges are not created equal - Kraken & Bittrex & ? on: October 18, 2017, 09:24:33 AM
Yes, price differences at cryptocurrency exchanges are ubiquitous. It is easy to transfer crypto between exchanges (although there ae withdrawal commissions), but moving fiat is usually difficult and expensive. So one cannot easily buy crypto at one exchange, move to another, sell higher and move fiat to the first exchange to repeat. It is called arbitrage and, when possible, it can eventually make the prices equal. When they are not, there are definitely some barriers preventing effective arbitrage.
430  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Confusion on Bitcoin Cash on: October 18, 2017, 06:36:24 AM
There are a few wallets supporting Bitcoin Cash. I use Electrum and claimed Bitcoin Cash by importing Electrum seed into Electron Cash, an Electrum fork made for Bitcoin Cash, but I moved my bitcoins to a new wallet first, as described here: https://electrum.org/bcc2.txt. As for dumping, Bitcoin Cash is volatile, it reached $700-800 several times, but recently fell to $300. Now it seems to be rising again, so I would wait a bit before dumping. I still hold most of the amount I received, and will probably do it until situation with Segwit2x clears. But it is only my personal opinion.
431  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: EtherDelta - Decentralized Token Exchange on: October 17, 2017, 04:31:28 PM
Hmm, just tried placing the same order three times over the last hour or so and it's still not showing up in the order book. I got the "your order is being placed..." pop-up each time and the site is generally responsive and fast ATM. This is the first time it hasn't worked. Weird....

Anyone else having a similar problem?

Yes, I had exactly the same problem. Tried to place an order three times and nothing happened. Tried for a fourth time an hour later, and it appeared in the order book.
432  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: EtherDelta - Decentralized Token Exchange on: October 17, 2017, 01:40:51 PM
Deposited some almost worthless tokens and a little Etherium. Fortunately worthless and a little, because it was a mistake. Tried to create an order three times, it says that the order it on its way to the order book... and nothing happens. The orders do not show anywhere, even after more than half an hour. It's not an exchange, it's a bad joke. Suppose I have to wait until some tokens really get some traction and appear on a proper exchange.
433  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: EtherDelta - Decentralized Token Exchange on: October 17, 2017, 12:35:10 PM
Wanted to sell some airdrop tokens and finally created an account at EtherDelta, but today it does not work, at least for me. Orders, charts, and trades do not load - rotating circles and nothing else for an hour or so. The performance of this site is just abysmal.

it seems some weeks I see some transactions must take a long time to get done, I also do not understand why this can happen, hopefully there will be improvement in the future

Tried different browsers and different Internet links. Sometimes it does not work at all, in one case (Opera browser under Linux) it, at least, loads all data. Too bad everything requires paying some amount of gas, so testing exchange functions will have a real cost, even if they do not work. I would prefer any proper exchange over this.
434  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Monetary scientist sees bitcoin price at $27k in four months time on: October 17, 2017, 11:58:39 AM
Five times increase in four months, after the previous rise of a similar ratio in nine months or so? This is very unlikely. I would not be surprised at all by such increase in four years from now, maybe even two, but not in a few months.

436  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and generation gap on: October 17, 2017, 06:43:41 AM
I do not think it's a generation gap, but mostly attitude towards technology. Although over 40 now, I am (and always was) a technophile. I started to use bitcoin (CPU mining) more than 6 years ago, but only recently joined this forum, as this year things started to get really interesting.

Received the tokens, same amount as everyone else. Thanks you! Waiting for further development.
438  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: china Asserts Bitcoin’s Adoption as Actual Currency Would Be Disasterous on: October 16, 2017, 08:57:36 AM
I think most people would agree that Bitcoin is not ready to be a mainstream reserve currency for a whole country. Bitcoin cannot handle that scale of transactions and cash is still king in most countries. You have no waiting time on Credit cards or cash, so it is still the preferred medium of payment for most countries.

We might see something different when the Lightning Network is implemented, because that will be much faster and the transactions a lot cheaper. < Again, cash transactions are free >

That's right. Currently the performance of bitcoin network is nowhere near the level required for the whole mass of retail transactions. And it is still too volatile to be considered as a purely reserve currency.
439  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Putin wants CryptoRuble on: October 16, 2017, 08:29:40 AM
We were talking about state's crypto. So, this is how it looks. Taxes. It's the only reason why governments are banning cryptocurrencies around the world.

Yes, taxes. Other recent ideas of Russian government officials about regulation and licensing of exchanges and miners are also ultimately about taxation.

I checked now and i can get 0.18+ PoStoken coin. Is better to wait more days and i will get more rewards or is better to mine today?

I have a similar amount. Tried to mine just to test it, it worked fine, but it is not worth doing now, at the present token price the profit is roughly equal to the transaction commission. Now I'll wait for more coinage to accumulate.
