Urban dictionary is not a creditable source. Anyone would know that. It is basically like wikipedia which is an online source made by everyone, for everyone. Ask a teacher who has been a teacher for several years in the art of journalism. They will tell you the same words I'm telling you. You'll need a creditable source such as Google or Webster.

Google is a credible source? Please tell your teacher they need to quit their job. Anyway. No they dont need a credible source, in fact the staff here needs no source at all. They can just define spam in the way that is to be understood here. It might be confusing for some, it might even be irritating for some, but there is no need to have credible source for the rules of a private forum.

Its worth a shot if you can get a sticky for it. If not, it will be missed by most anyway. Regarding the wallet software, only bitcoin core should be here. It might be a good idea to link to the correct sections for other wallets.

Electrum -> Electrum
Multibit -> Multibit
Fancy Wallet x -> Alt Clients
blockchain.info -> Service discussion
etc.

But you could upload only an hash that marks a document: the document could be offline, and you could still match that hash with the document. If the document changes, the hash would prove it's not the same document. This would be a lot cheaper.

or you could use twitter for that, sign it with a PGP key, etc., which would be free. Its certainly possible if that is your question.

4205  Local / Anfänger und Hilfe / Re: Falsche Adresse schicken? on: December 10, 2015, 08:10:49 AM

So send coins to a wallet where you neither have the seed nor the password for? What wallet software do you use? Sounds like Electrum.

"using blockchain technology" does not mean they will use bitcoin. Its possible to make a transaction that is storing any infromation instead of specific bitcoin money moving information though.

Exactly: they are NOT using the Bitcoin blockchain.
So, there must be a reason.

The reasons is: its expensive. Depending on the method you can store 80 bytes per transaction (OP_RETURN) and have to pay the needed fee or you will get a transaction that can never be spend[1].

4209  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How long will 1 year 25 weeks take to download (file size?) on: December 10, 2015, 06:09:42 AM
This is the stupid part of this whole technology. Imagine if VISA had to tell their customers to download something, that would take them 1 week and loads of bandwidth, before they could use the service. Yes, I know there are other alternatives to using the technology, but it's hardcore to explain this to a newbie.

In countries with capped internet and slow data lines, this is not even a option. <Once again, under developed countries, with poor infrastructure are excluded>

Visa would ask you to download a crapton of data if you wanted to be an actual part of the network though. If you dont want to be an actual part of the bitcoin network, but only use it you dont have to download the entire blockchain either. There are other clients that do not require this.
4210  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Timestamping on the Bitcoin Blockchain: limits on: December 10, 2015, 06:05:41 AM
It may be how you say, but for the sake of clearness I repeat: I've READ that there IS actually a limit on the quantity of information that can be stored per day or per block, can't recall.
There is a block size limit, if that is what you are talking about. The current limit is 1Mb per block.

However, sorry to contradict you (even though I may be wrong) but each block has a limit size, for what I know, so only a limited quantity of info can be stored in it.
Yes. See above. It has nothing to do with timestamps though. The block header has some bytes (IIRC 4 bytes) reserved for a UNIX timestamp.

So if in the next hour 1 million people want to timestamp something in the next hour, they can? No problem would arise?

Maybe, only 1 MB of information can be stored in a block. The block itself acts as a timestamp for the system. There is one block every 10 minutes on average, so 6 blocks on average. If these 1 million people issue a single transaction together they will probably have no problem to get a place in a block. If every one of the 1 million people wanted to issue a transaction and get a timestamp from a block, they would have to wait longer. How long depends on the size of each transaction. If we assume a typical small transaction size of 225 byte, that all blocks are actually filled by miners, they would need ~255 blocks or 42.5 hours (on average).

So if in the next hour 1 million people want to timestamp something in the next hour, they can? No problem would arise?
Timestamp what? What would they be including a timestamp on?

Anything. Photos, PDF, videos.

If there is no limit, can you explain to me why these people are launching this service? https://uproov.com/index.php

4211  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How many lost Bitcoins are out there? on: December 10, 2015, 05:57:28 AM
At least 2k BTC are verifiable: https://blockchain.info/address/1CounterpartyXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXUWLpVr. If satoshi don't appear again, its safe to assume that 1million+ additional BTC are lost. If more BTC were in circulation today, BTC would be much less valuable obviously. Shortage of coins is not a concern since BTC are divisible.

I disagree, the 1 million aren't lost if the address is known. It's the address owner's prerogative whether they want to spend that coin or not...but the coins aren't lost, they're very much found and visible.

I know some of early coins were earmarked as "test" and essentially thrown away - no one is supposed to have the addresses for those coins. And there's probably a lot of early addresses used for faucets and things that have been forgotten and have relatively large balances.

I dont think address means what you think it means. All possible addresses are known whether they have been used or not. The important question is whether or not someone has a private key to be able to spend the coins. This is what is commonly understood as "lost". Its known where they are, they just cant be spend.

4213  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How long will 1 year 25 weeks take to download (file size?) on: December 09, 2015, 11:26:40 PM
I just bought an new PC with an i7 16gb ram and it took roughly about 45hrs to download the whole blockchain with bitcoin core.  it sound terribly dodgy also to get your block chain from anywhere other than the official bitcoin core.  maybe im wrong but i would have thought that this type of download is vulnerable to manipulation....?

The data is still verified locally, this is also the reason why newer versions are faster. They can download and verify at the same time. If you download via torrent first and verify later you cant.
4214  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Testing- Restoring Wallet on laptop shows less than wallet on desktop on: December 09, 2015, 11:20:11 PM
Ok.  I will wait until it is fully synced. And report back here if the problem still persists.

Good idea.

If would be better if it downloaded the transactions first then the rest.

It does not know which transaction is yours though, so it has to start at the beginning and look at them block by block until it finds yours.

At least i know how to restore my wallet now! let's hope the full balance is there when it finises syncing,

thanks!

If its not, Im certain we can fix that.
4215  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Download a blockchain year on: December 09, 2015, 11:18:00 PM
Hey,
Is it possible to download the blockchain from 1 year, so i want to download all activities from 2015. Is that possible? Huh

Yes, just install and start bitcoin core it will do that automatically. I have feeling though that is not the answer you are looking for. Maybe you can be more specific in what exactly you want to download.
4216  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Setting up Bitcoin Qt and opening port 8333 on: December 09, 2015, 11:13:13 PM
Lets give it a try and ignore the nagging for a bit shall we?

#1 you need to know the local IP from the machine that is running the node. If you tell us what operation system you use, we can probably tell you how to figure that out.

#2 you need to make sure the IP does not change. This is probably done via your router. A typcial router will use something called DHCP to give out IP addresses for the local network. To set a fixed IP the option might be called "static DHCP lease" or something similar. In order to set it you will need to know the "MAC Adresse" of the machines network device that is running the full node. Again, tell us your OS and we might be able to tell you how to find that information

#3 you need to forward any external traffic on port 8333 TCP to the internal IP that of the machine that is running your the node.
Proto: TCP
Source Address: any
External Ports: 8333
Internal Ports: 8333
Internal Address: -tbn-
Description: Bitcoin core

If you dont get the answer you are looking for, dont start a new thread, it will get removed anyway. Bump the existing thread (once per 24 hours) and be patient.

4218  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Testing- Restoring Wallet on laptop shows less than wallet on desktop on: December 09, 2015, 10:22:46 PM
I closed the client, and restarted it but the balance is still showing 0

I made a shortcut on the desktop, that is how i normally access it.

Did you modify the shortcut in any way?

Was the wallet in sync before?

Can you show the last ~100 lines from the debug.log please. You can open it with notepad and find it with win + r
Code:
%APPDATA%\Bitcoin\debug.log

I just noticed I did not answer your question #2 and #3.

#2 you only need the password for spending the coins, not for looking at the balance

#3 No, its >50GB of data that needs to be verified, it takes a while.
4219  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Transactions take very long WHY? on: December 09, 2015, 10:18:17 PM
i just looked at this transaction am i looking at it right it took 3 days for a conformation?

Sounds about right.

Blockchain.info saw it on 2015-12-02 13:23:24 and it was in block 386802 ( 2015-12-05 08:38:26 ) ~ 4000 minutes later.

1 satoshi per byte is a bit low for a fee currently.
4220  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Testing- Restoring Wallet on laptop shows less than wallet on desktop on: December 09, 2015, 10:12:22 PM
I followed your instructions.

I closed the bitcoin client on my desktop and I closed the bitcoin client on my laptop.

Then i hit win+r for the run menu, I entered my path

c:\Program Files\Bitcoin\bitcoin-qt.exe -zapwallettxes

and pressed ok.  After i did that bitcoin started on its own.

But it shows the balance as 0

Do i have to wait until it finishes synchronizing with the network? Then it should show my balance correctly?

No, you can close it. Do you normally have a different data directory? What is your regular shortcut for starting bitcoin core on that machine?
