4201  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcointalk Forum is more than it seems and I'm happy about it. on: March 22, 2022, 01:29:49 PM
If you ask about protection against scams, there's none. You have to be very careful and use escrow when buying or selling.
Also look on other users' trust feedback, it can give interesting info.
Some would argue that safety protocols like trust feedback and trust flag serves as protection against scams.

The idea that the forum does not try to protect users could pass a wrong message to newer members. The forum puts some community oriented process in place to protect users especially newbies and guests from falling for scams. It is not just moderated, so there would be no action taken if you fall for scam.

Trust feedback is also not moderate and can easily contain false information too (usually retaliatory feedback, but still...), so it's far from an ultimate tool.
So while you are somewhat right (my wording could have been softer), do stand to my point. I don't want to give the wrong impression one has a safety net, when no actual actions are done to recover the stolen funds/items (there's still an action: the scammer will probably get a flag, not that it matters that much for the one if he runs away with something valuable).
4202  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Privacy: How to Store My KYC Coins After Whirlpool Coinjoin? on: March 22, 2022, 01:21:29 PM
I will sum it up based on my knowledge and preferences:

* from what I know actual mixer may do a better job than CoinJoin
* OP can use Sparrow with a Bitcoin Core node or with a local Electrum server and should do that especially for the second wallet
* OP should use a separate, new wallet for receiving the coins and this new wallet has to work with the local server
* I may be a bit paranoid, however, imho whenever OP wants to do a firmware update for his Hardware Wallet, he should reset it before touching software like Ledger Live
4203  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Signing a petition against Putin on: March 22, 2022, 01:09:37 PM
Is the Petition signed against Putin worth making him end the war?

He doesn't care he's bombing residential buildings known for sheltering civilians, he doesn't care he's bombing hospitals, he doesn't care of all the sanctions and do you really think that he'd care whether a number of people sign into a spreadsheet from behind their computers?!

He will most probably face a lot of charges, and not only from Ukraine side, when he will get caught (if he will be caught alive, obviously) with or without that petition.

I find that petition mostly a cheap attempt of a newspaper gain popularity, really...
4204  Economy / Reputation / Re: Another account spotted for plagiarism! on: March 22, 2022, 10:29:22 AM
Kindly take action on this one mods please. Thank you in advance!

FYI, the proper way should have been to:
1. Post in the topic made for this purpose: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1926895.new#new
2. Report that one of those posts to moderators for plagiarism.

3. How secured is this section for marketing?
4. How to be on safer side when using?

Ah, and be very careful about impersonation, both in-forum and on other means of communication (discord and such).
4206  Economy / Economics / Re: Is there a place in the world you could live like a king via sig campaigns? on: March 22, 2022, 07:28:21 AM
Romania is a country where 1000$ / month (after taxes) is already a good pay.

With 1500$ a week you can easily* afford to buy either a flat in the city, either a smaller house or a half of a duplex in the one of the "bedroom-villages" next to the bigger cities of the country and have a pretty good life. Not havanas, whiskey and hookers 24/7, Smiley still a good life. If I'd have such an income and no kids at school I would probably spend most of the year in holidays.

* It may worth mentioning though that with that kind of income probably no bank will lend the money for buying, so it may not be that easy after all. But strictly from the income point of view it's easy-peasy.
4207  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: DUBAI LICENSES BINANCE AND FTX on: March 22, 2022, 07:00:19 AM
They may be not interested to replace the petrodollars with Bitcoin. If they do like Saudi Arabia and China. They are working on oil contracts denominated in Yuan to free themselves from the excessive privilege of the dollar (Saudi Arabia is reportedly in talks with Beijing to accept yuan instead of dollars for some of its oil sales in China). And China is highly prospecting in this area of the world. They've signed several partnerships with different countries related to the oil industry.

The Gulf oil monarchies agreed to denominate their transactions in dollars in exchange for their security guaranteed by the USA. Nowadays with the geo-politic, who knows if the guarantee couldn't switch to China.

Dollar, Yuan or Dirham, I am sure that if they want to invest, they do, no matter whether there's an exchange (or more) under their nose or not.
Just then I don't understand Binance and FTX move. Is it only for the miners from that area?!
4208  Economy / Speculation / Re: Expect Bullrun this year again! on: March 21, 2022, 03:58:02 PM
$350k-$450k is actually very realistic, it's just a matter of 'when'.
10 years, 50 years from now, not even sure.

I'd go for "1 to 50 years", actually.  Wink

To be honest this person looks more like a shitcoin bag holder who is advertising the garbage he has placed in his bags and wishes them to rise up.

People are preaching a new altcoin season, so all the altcoin bag holders rejoice. Of course, they don't realize that not all their shitcoins will become profitable (if any!)
4209  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which wallet is safe for keeping large amount of btc? on: March 21, 2022, 03:38:07 PM
However, paper wallet could be recommended when looking for secure wallet, due to its offline character, but I won't advise newbie's in using it due to its complexity.

One can also use a HD wallet, generate a seed and use it basically like a paper wallet. Still, one has to do that on a completely safe environment and indeed, newbies may do mistakes with this (too).
On the other hand, one can easily generate a new seed with his hardware wallet and use that seed as a paper wallet. If the seed remains offline, backed up by hand writing, that's good.
But: does OP want to "bury his gold" onto a paper wallet or want to keep it at hand with a hardware wallet?

However, since the topic is about big amount of BTC, I think that hardware wallet is a must in the equation, no matter what he's doing afterwards (just never forget to store the backups safely)
4210  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Honduras to declare Bitcoin as a legal tender? on: March 21, 2022, 03:31:37 PM
As far as I know, the US dollar (or any other) is not the official currency in Honduras, and El Salvador has been using the US dollar as its official currency for more than 20 years - so the question is, what exactly is Mr. Castro talking about? Maybe as a neighboring country with the ES they are planning some kind of monetary union - I'm sure the guys who print digital dollars know a lot more about what's going on - Samson Mow is obviously very busy these days.

Indeed, Lempira (HNL) is their currency. And I think that we should not pay too much attention to political declarations, instead (wait and) see what will actually be done.
On the other hand, it's very interesting that they have their own currency. Let's see how will they handle this; Honduras may become the first country with own currency that'll make Bitcoin legal tender.

Of course that afterwards Bitcoin can become the proper currency for transacting between Honduras and El Salvador, replacing US Dollar.

Edit: I've just watched this s u p e r b short movie about the first follower, I think that it worth the time:

4211  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Electrum freaked me out for the first time ever.... on: March 21, 2022, 02:30:46 PM

Thanks for finding the correct Git.
Interestingly Google sent me to electrum[dot]dash[dot]org which shows different Git page, probably old/obsolete.
I've removed my incorrect post.

By the way, what I just wrote does not mean I support Putin.

Not linking (and avoiding) those who are shouting to your face asking for money, no matter it the cause is good or not, no matter if they're for real from the war or faking that is not related to one's (political) views.
I can guess that people are desperate, but this is pretty much extreme and I agree with your conclusion.
4212  Economy / Economics / Re: Ukraine VS Russia. Ideological or Economical conflict? on: March 21, 2022, 01:00:04 PM
1. Is it unimaginable for an entire country in these modern times to elect a madman? Look around. Or does a people even elect?

Russia didn't make the step to proper democracy. And even in a (young) democracy, it's not unimaginable at all to elect a madman; it can easily happen because of lacking actual choices.
The thing is that in a democracy the pillars of the state are not linked/interconnected, hence they won't allow a man (or even a small group) rule.
Since Russia is not a proper democracy, there's no other power in the state that could veto any of the president's actions.

And since this situation is there for too long, I expect that anybody even daring to question his actions is basically doomed. So it's a totalitarian state (weakly) disguised in democracy.
4213  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Have I been scammed - legalminner.com?? Is it real on: March 21, 2022, 11:36:05 AM
Hoping someone can help. Is Legalminner.com a real thing ? Someone “helped me set it up and buy bitcoin (I think) but then started asking me to pay them money to withdraw my profit.  Roll Eyes So I backed out. But I’ve sent a bit of money somewhere, I think to this legalminner website so I’m wondering if it’s a scam or if it’s real and maybe I can learn to use it and somehow get my money back ?? Long shot I know

Thanks in advance

From what I understand you've paid for something claiming to be mining for you. 99.99+% of such "businesses" are scam.
Did they ask for more money to allow withdrawal of your own money? 100% scam, it proves that you have 0 money there.

How to get your money back? Well.. how you get any money back when scammed: go to the police and expect a miracle.
4214  Other / Archival / Re: What is holding back the price of bitcoin now? on: March 21, 2022, 10:54:45 AM
Historically, compared to the moment of the last halving, this should be a period when the price goes down without hopes for recovery.
One guess would be that traders are aware and afraid of that possibility, hence overly cautious, no matter how many news-that-should-pump are coming out.
It may be one of the moments when the price can break the known cycle... or not.

The hash rate keeps going upwards and I expect pretty soon the miners look more carefully to the price they sell at and maybe decide to risk and hold.
The currently grim geo-political status is also one of the the moments people distrust fiat the most.

Still, I can't tell what's going to happen next. I agree: everybody seems to look around cautiously and wait to see what's going to happen next so they can just follow the trend.
4215  Economy / Economics / Re: Ukraine VS Russia. Ideological or Economical conflict? on: March 21, 2022, 08:40:38 AM
So there is no Ideological difference. Its only economic and strategic/military reason for conflict.

With Ukraine opening towards EU and NATO and turning their back to Mother Russia, I find it quite a big ideological difference.
And yeah, it's somewhere between military reasoning - attempt to get Russia's borders towards natural barriers, big seas and mountains - and somebody's wet dream to become the tzar of a new era's Soviet Union.

Clearly the coal from Donbass, the oil and gas from Crimea and Black Sea and the great plains just perfect for grains are also a big point in all this.
4216  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why Satoshi was dumb on: March 21, 2022, 08:18:05 AM
I woke up today, completely lucid, with the following realization: Satoshi was naive at worst and plain dumb at worst.

Thinking one has fully understood other individual's reasoning is imho at least naive, if not plain dumb.
Thinking one knows for sure how much bitcoins other individual has is imho at least naive, if not plain dumb.

From my knowledge one important point in Satoshi's leaving was his own physical security/integrity.
If he's alive and well, I surely hope that he did buy or mine plenty of bitcoins around 2010 so he has a good life.
Since we don't know who is he, we don't know if he has known crypto business and lives between us or he's enjoying life somewhere far from all this.

And any wild guess about what he has done after leaving.. is just a guess. We will probably never know the truth.
4217  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: March 21, 2022, 08:09:43 AM

Welcome to my ignore list.
4218  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: DUBAI LICENSES BINANCE AND FTX on: March 21, 2022, 08:07:19 AM
  • we may see more institutional users who may rush to adopt cryptocurrencies in that region.
  • I see that the competition between FTX and Binance has begun to increase, which is a good thing.

The competition is real and it was very visible already for quite some time.
But the more interesting point is about the institutional money. It could be an interesting entry point for petro dollars getting converted into bitcoin, but on the other hand I don't think that institutional investors from that area really needed locally licensed exchanges for that to happen, they could already very well buy internationally. So I would not expect a tremendous change in the numbers of investors from that area. Can clearly make their lives easier, but may not change much in the volumes.
4219  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: F1 Formula Sports Racing - Sportsbet.io promotions & discussion thread on: March 21, 2022, 07:57:04 AM
Sadly not as always I never bet when I could win and vice versa.

I didn't bet when it was pretty much certain that either Max or Lewis will win. Now it's even more complicated to decide, actually.
So I'm with you in this one, if you would have been betting probably at least Checo wold have finished Grin
Imho F1 is far from easy to get right at betting.

Next week in Saudi Arabia will be an interesting one, I can't see Mercedes engines in the fight for the top while RBR will maybe go down in power after this week's engine problems?
Another 1-2 Ferrari, 3-4 RBR?

Yep, I can't wait!
I would not count on Ferrari 1-2. If Max's car would have been just a tad more reliable he could have had his chance after the safety car. Mercedes will also work their ass off to get on top, since they were not that far behind actually.
Actually, while I love to see cars like Haas and Alfa Romeo just after the Mercs, I think (hope!) that at least some of the others will get their cars right and he fight for the podium will get more interesting (and unpredictable).
4220  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Problem verifying Electrum 4.2 Signature With Kleopatra on: March 20, 2022, 08:20:21 PM
What am I doing wrong?

Go to https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/tree/master/pubkeys
Download ThomasV, Emzy and sombernight_releasekey files. Make sure that the content of resulted files start with

Code:
-----BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-----

and not some html. (you can look with notepad)

Import the 3 files into Kleopatra (if you've saved correct asc a double click may do).

Then check the Electrum asc again.
