4283  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Used Antminer S17 Pro - Having issues and PO finally said he had it plugged 120v on: April 07, 2020, 05:24:03 PM
... it does run on 120V, but he was able to for about 4 days.

Do you trust the seller's words like 100%? I hope you don't because I am pretty confident he is not telling you the truth, I have at least one the following gears.

T17
T17e
S17 pro
S17+

NONE of them would work without a voltage regulator and the voltage hardly dips below 190v, so even 195v was not enough, let alone 110-120v, so it's one of two things, either he is not telling you the truth, or he has gotten a magically different S17 pro that somehow manages to run on a 120v socket, and I highly doubt the latter, unless by "run" he means fans spinning, LEDs are on but not exactly hashing.
4284  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Used Antminer S17 Pro - Having issues and PO finally said he had it plugged 120v on: April 07, 2020, 03:47:28 PM
Frankly I am surprised the PO was able to run it at all (did they say it ran?)

Even if the seller says it worked i wouldn't believe them, i have personal experience with these gears, anything below 200v it starts acting, maybe 198v and it shuts down all hash boards, i highly doubt his gear would be any different.

Your only option now is to plug it into a 200-240v socket and see how it does, it is a 50/50 chance i'd sat,it will either work just fine or you will need a new psu, it is highly unlikely that any other components got toasted in the process.
4285  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Block confirmations, Why do they lag at times? on: April 07, 2020, 02:19:33 PM
While these answers have substances, they are all wrong i.e. do not explain what is going on. The time between blocks follows the Exponential distribution, the number of blocks in an interval follows the Poisson distribution (Poisson distribution can be derived from an Exponential or Binomial distribution) — with the expected time being 10 minutes, and the variance being 100 minutes.

I consider this answer to be the most accurate, non of the above informations is wrong but they simply don't really answer the question (including my answer)

Lauda brought up a very interesting point to say the least, I have read about Poisson distribution in the white paper some time ago, but never thought of using exponential distribution to "estimate" time between blocks, after reading this I decided to make a little excel sheet.

Using the Cumulative distribution function for the exponential distribution where λ=1/600 as explained by Felix Weis

I am not completely new to probabilities and statistics, but after seeing these results I have to admit that I am surprised! I was not expecting to see such numbers.

Fun Facts:

- Every 621 blocks or 4.3 days one block is expected to take between 55-60 mins.

- 63.21% of blocks are solved in less than 10 mins.

- Every 4595 blocks or a month one block is expected to take 75 to 80 mins.

- Only 36.79% of blocks are actually solved in exactly 10 mins.

- Every 4.7 years a block can take 2 hours to be solved.

* Somebody might want to double-check these numbers.
4286  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: It is 2020 time for a new diff thread. on: April 07, 2020, 03:33:59 AM
Some real price movement we broke 7000  and are at 7104

Strange enough, the price keeps going up while diff is slowing down

Quote
Next Difficulty Change:   between +4.6016% and +4.6514%

1812 blocks down, 204 to go (34 hours estimated) to next adjustment, I expect us to close this round with +5% in terms of difficulty and coins at about flat $7400 or slightly below, with diff staying at 14.5T and coins prices above $7000 I expect a ton of gears to go back online, and the following diff adjustment could go to as high as 10%, in other words, back to difficulty's ATH.
4287  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Complete Newbie on: April 06, 2020, 11:41:19 PM
Then go with the most efficient gear he has which is innosilicon T2T 30T if I am not mistaken, you need to do a bit of googling in terms of power consumption vs hash-rate, but by a quick look at the list you posted it seems like the T2T is the most efficient. Another reason why you should pick gear with higher hashrate is the shipping cost per TH, you mentioned $300 for shipping which sounds like a lot (maybe normal given the situation we are in now with the virus) but still getting fewer gears is better IMO, I wouldn't buy S9e, nobody reliable made a custom firmware for it, so not much tuning can be done on it, S9j is still better than S9e.

TL;DR

My vote goes to Inno T2T 30T
4288  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Complete Newbie on: April 06, 2020, 10:14:01 PM
S9 can do as low as 75w per terahash after tweaking, so you could be looking at 700-750w for 9-10th, just about the same efficiency as the T2T, so I see the T2T as a better option here, but since you are willing to spend up to $700, why not get 1 proper gear that can actually make you some profit? like the T17 from Bitmain, or M21s from MicroBt? those have better efficiency, the T17 does 40th at about 2200w, so that can be both a learning experience and some profit, at worst case scenario you wouldn't be mining at a loss.

The other reason why I suggest buying newer gears is the fact that those old gears' design is over with, the S9 for an example, that was a beast that can bear all the heat and voltage instability, the newer gears are less robust and need to be treated gently, and I am pretty sure these gears get more sensitive as we move forward, remember how you could crack open almonds using Nokia phones?  Grin. So really it's best to get used to these new gears rather than learning using an old gear that you will probably never deal with again.

Quote

Quote

4290  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Complete Newbie on: April 06, 2020, 04:45:53 PM
. What I compare these to when looking at power is electric showers. any decent 1 here uses 10.5kw and allowed a max on 2 on my system at any one time. They have to have a dedicated breaker each.

Keep in mind the "time" factor, taking a shower is 30-60 mins max, mining is 24/7, so the infrastructure might not be set up to handle the same load all that long, I also doubt the 10.5kw thing, are you sure about that? what kind of shower is that? I have a 200L water heater and a large pump and those combined don't go past 3kw, 10.5kw is enough for 2 average houses almost everywhere on planet earth, why would they allocate 10.5kw for an electric shower?  Shocked

Yes exactly that. Not an investment its a learning curve.

With all due respect, I always talk about "Newbies" who mine at loss or break-even when we discuss future difficulty, sometimes based on the numbers in front of us, we expect diff to drop by say 10% and then it doesn't, or any other kind of speculations we do, those numbers are usually off because we miss a very critical element in the equation, which is miners like yourself, that is not a bad thing at all, I am just trying to tell you that "you are most certainly not alone in this", and I do encourage you to actually learn how to mine, and the best way of learning is by practicing it in real-life, mining for a week by yourself probably teaches you more about mining than reading half of the topics you find here, so mine on!

Quote
I might enjoy doing it and decided to invest in proper efficient miners in the future.

If you are located on the west side of Europe, then your best move would be finding a better power rate and not just more efficient gears, the word efficient gear is rather misunderstood, the word efficient is subjective really, as @Biffa mentioned that power costs about 16 cents in the UK, no gear will be efficient long enough and turn out to be profitable at such power rate, in other words, S15 is could be more "efficient" in China than S17 pro in the UK, when mining you are basically competing against everyone else, almost every competitor has access to the same mining gears so having more efficient gears than some other miners is not a huge advantage, however, having better power rate is the biggest advantage one can have against the world.

That's just what I think, it's not a popular or proven fact, it's simply how I interrupt the mining business based on my humble experience so take it with a grain of salt.
4291  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S9 Hashboard keeps reseting on: April 06, 2020, 03:57:42 PM
I believe that auto frequency found best setting for that board which is 8.9 Volt and 656 Mhz.

Since the seller agreed to send me a new board for free. Is it safe to run miner with all 3 boards or is better to disconnect  faulty one?

It is safe, no physical damage can be caused by the faulty dashboard, it might, however, cause the mine to restart every now and then which means financial damage.

I would still try to fix the board, I mean some time in the future another board will surely stop hashing, so it's good to have a spare, and your isn't completely dead since it shows all 63 basics at certain points, I suggest you try to play with the frequency and voltage in an attempt to get it to work, you can try one of the firmware I told you about or thierry4wd's suggestion, and then you can easily roll back to your desired firmware.
4292  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S9 Hashboard keeps reseting on: April 06, 2020, 06:28:11 AM
Run just board 3 for an hour see if it works  the whole hour

Next run just board 2  for an hour  see if it works for an hour

last run just  board 1 for an hour  see if it works for an hour.

There is really no need for all that, line 463 in the kernel logs tells the whole story

Code:
driver-btm-c5.c:15886:re_open_core: Chain[J6] has 63 asic
driver-btm-c5.c:15886:re_open_core: Chain[J7] has 63 asic
driver-btm-c5.c:15886:re_open_core: Chain[J8] has 0 asic

Chain J8 ( most left ) is failing, in general, you can't do anything about it but watch it toast even more, soon enough it could start making the miner restart itself every now and then - and thus affecting the performance of the two working boards J6 and J7, however, there is hope and that would be by trying a different firmware such as BriianOs for Vnish (Asic.to / Awoesmeminer), and you want to play with the frequency of the bad board, start by going really low, test it for say 30 mins and then go higher slowly, sometimes increasing the voltage helps but keep that as your last resort.

if all the above fails, you should simply discount the bad board, and then separate the two boards, put on to the left and one to right (keep the middle empty) this way you ensure the boards get better cooling since the board in the middle usually runs hotter than the once on the sides.
4293  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Complete Newbie on: April 06, 2020, 06:13:30 AM
First mistake:

You bought some shity gears for pretty high cost > don't let that bring you down to your knees, but next time maybe ask before buying anything?

So what do we have?

Volt: 240v
Wats: 2100*3 = 6300w or 26.5 amps , those need at least 35 amps mcb, I am not sure they make those, so you you might need a 40amp mcb, now for 40amp running on 240v you going to need a 6AWG cable.

That is based on the form below

Wire Circular Mils =   (Conductor Resistivity)(2)(Amps)(One Way Distance in Feet)
Allowable Voltage Drop

Depending on what and what you are not allowed to do as far as wiring is concerned, you could simply run 6AWG copper wire from a single 40amp breaker to the sockets/miners or get 1*40amp mcm and 3*15amps breakers, each breaker is for a single miner

Wires from 40amp to 15amp is 6AWG and 12AWG from 15amp to miner, so you need a ensure your sockets can handle 2100w.

My Thoughts before I came on here was to replace the main breaker to 40amp. Then put another 2 sockets in on an additional 30amp breaker. The sockets already there could run 1 machine 2200 watts. Then the new breaker could run the other 2 machines 4400 ?

That will work too, but double-check the wirings you have, breakers are easy to change, wires are not.

Now, of course, I would advise you to hire a professional, but if you decide to do it your own you could have a look at some of my setups.

you can read more about it here

Keep in mind my setup could be bad enough to send me to jail if I was based in the U.S or any other similar country, it's perfect where I am located and done by the code  Grin and it works for me.

As for the mining pool and all that, I wouldn't worry about it, get your wirings done, set up your gears and then start a different thread for that only.

Good luck.

4297  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Binance announce Bitcoin Mining Pool ( Binance Pool ) on: April 05, 2020, 02:56:47 PM
What exactly can he do if he somehow gets to own >50% of the hashing power through his pool?

I don't think that is a possible scenario, bitmain owns two of the largest pools and they are from that 50%, they also manufacture most of the gears and do own a ton of them, in a nutshell 50% of hash power is way above binance's capabilities.

Keep in mind that miners can switch pools in a second, also it is for Binance's best interest to not try and do anything obviously damaging to bitcoin.

Yes well let's not forget they did ask for a "chain roll back"  after the hack so if they start to control the hashrate then it could lead to something bad in the future.

IIRC CZ didn't ask for a roll back, he talked about the pros and cons of it and i think he mentioned that roll backs are bad for bitcoin and he wouldn't want to see them happen, some digging into his Twitter needs to be done to confirm this.

I am with you in regards to having more "major" pools, if it was only a mining pool they are up to i would support that, but the CMC thing is what makes me worried about binance shady goals, there is also the incident with DGB where binance asked how much can dgb team afford to pay to be listed, all of those things make me not trust binance for anything outside of thier exchange which they have proved to be good at running it so far.

Im sorry but, I don't know what a GUI is nor how to locate it... Ive tried searching through everything and have not found it.

GUI = graphical user interface

In other words, you open your browser (Google Chrome for an example), and then you type the IP address of the miner (For an example 192.168.1.10, that opens the GUI of your miner.

from there you can see Miner status, Kernel logs and all the other information we need to see, the kernel log is a text which you copy and paste here, the status page and setting page you should take a screenshot, upload it to imgur.com and post the image URL here.

And honestly, if you can't do the above you shouldn't be mining.
