4322  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: I found a paper wallet on a beach ... seriously on: August 21, 2022, 01:01:47 PM
Just a thought: you could add a "canary": a very simple unencrypted paper wallet with private key QR-code and instructions how to claim it. If someone finds it, you lose the small amount, but you'll know your backup is compromised without driving into the desert to check and digging a hole at N34 59 20, W106 36 52 each time.
And you can connect the address to a bot on Telegram, for example, that would notify you as soon as there is movement on said address. Since the amount is an insignificant one, you don't have to worry about your privacy. The Telegram account can be connected to a phone number not used for anything else or only for unimportant stuff non identity-revealing activities.
4323  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Moving to a new laptop on: August 21, 2022, 08:50:06 AM
@Sumarokov The guide mentioned to you by DireWolfM14 should be enough to verify your Electrum client. The only difference is that the executables are now signed by 3 developers and not just one like it was in the past. But even that is mentioned. It explains how you can Import ThomasV's PGP Key, so you can just follow the same procedure to import the keys from SomberNight and Emzy (the other two signers of the files).

It's not mandatory to do that. Even if you don't certify all the keys by all 3 developers, you will still be able to verify the application. The only difference is the verification results you will see. DireWolfM14 shows you 3 screenshots. One is when only ThomasV's PGP Key has been certified, the other is when all three developer keys were certified, and the 3rd image shows a text in red when the verification fails.
4324  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Q4 2010-Q1 2011 wallets on: August 21, 2022, 08:25:31 AM
I read an article that a married couple who stole bitcoins worth several million-billion dollars kept a private key in the cloud and nothing happened to it.
What's your point? That it's OK to keep seeds, private keys, and other sensitive information in the cloud because a married couple somewhere didn't have theirs hacked/stolen/lost? You can drive your car 100 miles/hour every day without a seatbelt and never have an accident if you are lucky. But you can also crash and die the first time you do it. You can smoke for 50 years and live a long life and die an old man at 85, or you can get cancer and die at 30. You don't use those examples to cheat on security and your safety. The goal should be to follow proper procedures to lower the chances of bad things happening to you, no matter if it's related to your personal health or your financials.
4325  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Square is considering making a hardware wallet for Bitcoin on: August 21, 2022, 08:07:30 AM
Square/Block is right about one thing in their latest blog post, people are generally terrible at creating and remembering secure passwords, and even worse in remembering seed phrases.
They are, but that doesn't mean they should get rid of Bitcoin's underlying security feature. More precisely, they aren't getting rid of it, they are just keeping the information for themselves in a cloud.

According to them people shouldn't be allowed to use any passwords or pin codes in their life, and they would need to have virtual babysitter cloud for everything they do in life.
One should never generalize and think that everyone is the same, but that's not that far from the truth. When I consider my friend circle, I know many instances where they have been hacked, or had their devices and social media infected with nasty stuff. It was particularly funny when one friend got some malware that would shout insults over private messages to random people, so his parents got pissed at him for cursing at them. The occasional invitation for group sex from your aunt and uncle is also not to be forgotten, or links to download Severina's porn movie. I have seen how people work their phones. They open weird links that redirects them somewhere with popups and messages and without thinking or reading they just click the first button they see in an attempt to close the ad or whatever it is as fast as possible. But not everyone is like that. 7/10 or 8/10 probably are.
4326  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Secure Element in Hardware Wallets on: August 21, 2022, 07:49:14 AM
Am I correct in assuming that they altered their previous plans and chose to go with the "100%" open-source route or there are still some parts of it that don't fall into that category?
This is the first official announcement in which I see the mention of the term "transparent" secure element. In the past, they called it either open-source or "as open source as possible" which was evident from their early announcements. The latest info dkbit98 shared mentions they are against "closed products". So the idea is still to create a different type of component from the traditional closed-source chips, but probably not a fully open-source SE. "As open-source as possible" should still be the most correct definition based on what we have seen up till now.
4327  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: I found a paper wallet on a beach ... seriously on: August 21, 2022, 07:10:58 AM
Bitcoin should not be treated as a physical asset. With a physical asset, if someone else possesses it then you do not. If you lose cash, a credit card, your wallet, your phone, or any other physical asset, then it is obvious to you that that thing has been lost as it is no longer in your possession. Losing a private key is not the same, since it is entirely possible for two people to both possess the same private key at the same time.
We agree on all points in this particular case, however the thing with this particular private key found on the beach by the OP is that it is a physical object represented in a paper wallet form. Whoever the original owner is or who their successors are, they have lost a physical object that used to be in their possession somewhere and somehow. Hopefully, that's not their only backup, they will discover sooner or later that it's missing and move the coins elsewhere.
4328  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Massively fraudulent Escrow Transaction! on: August 21, 2022, 07:02:52 AM
Yes... I know... and I agree... but I also was the n00b here who hired an expert who I was hoping would offer such advice and keep the deal secure. Especially considering the amount... Isn't that something a escrow provider should at least show some effort in trying to do? If the escrowers did that, it would make this place much less of a hot bed for scammers.
He could have, yes. But there is another side to that story. People are generally lazy to take the longer and safer route. If OgNasty required from the two parties to sign bitcoin messages as confirmation or doing any extra work besides PM exchanges, he might lose clients because of that. If a client is lazy to do what he says, he will just find a different escrow agent that doesn't require all that extra work. That's just the way it is.

Depay is getting closer and closer to becoming a Juventus player. I am not sure what to think about this. On one hand, he scored more goals than any other Juventus player last season, on the other hand he seems to be a problematic Balotelli type of player. It's certainly a gamble getting him. Reminds me of the Tevez situation kind of. He seemed to have plenty or behavioral issues at Man. City but was an exemplary player for two years and the best #10 Juventus had in the last decade.

With Casemiro's arrival in Manchester United, I guess Rabiot will remain in Turin. There surely is no other club that will offer him the wagers he believes he is worth.
4330  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: How long to crack 24 word phrase if you know all 24 words out of order? on: August 20, 2022, 12:40:10 PM
<Snip>
You did all those things and yet you managed to create a setup that is much less secure than taking a pen and a piece of paper and writing down 24 words nicely and in correct order. Was it worth it?

It's better to use simple and offline storage options and methods that have been working flawlessly for years. You now rely on several centralized services that have to stay online and operational until it's time for you or a successor to recover those coins.
4331  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: I found a paper wallet on a beach ... seriously on: August 20, 2022, 12:11:16 PM
I have coins which haven't moved in years and I don't plan on moving in years. If they've not moved in 10/20/50 years, does that make them any less mine (or my heir's), or does that make stealing them any less immoral? Of course not.
That's exactly what I said previously as a reply when someone suggested they would hold on to the paper wallet for a year and if the original owner doesn't move the coins, then they would consider them as lost and take them. But we can't put such flags on bitcoin UTXOs just because a similar law exists for some other assets or physical objects. For example, items from the Lost & Found at some airports are stored for 6 months, after that they get auctioned off. We shouldn't use the same logic with bitcoin. For all you know, I might have been incapacitated to check on my coins in that one year period you decided to give me.
4332  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: SandBoxCasino.io (AKA: www.Owl.Games) won't pay me $127,000 on: August 20, 2022, 11:58:14 AM
What I understand is you (owlgames) are game provider/software provider for SandBoxCasino. Please confirm that I get the idea clear.
SandBoxCasino uses Owl.games' casino software, but SandBoxCasino apparently operates on its own and works independently from Owl.games. Their admin has stated they have their own userbase and bankroll among other things.

It's a sales man pitch but it's shady practice.
I agree. It shouldn't happen, and if it did, that's not the way to provide support for your customers. You shouldn't lie to them and provide them with the wrong information that could get them in trouble.
4333  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Weird Bitcoin wallets on: August 20, 2022, 09:24:37 AM
Many people are lazy enough to write down a set of 12/24 words let alone the same number of emojis. If people are warned that different platforms/devices have different types of emojis, this can make them want to save the seed emojis in digital format to make sure they got the correct ones. This is not recommended. Give the people a new option and they will find shortcuts that make an unsafe implementation even worse.
4334  Other / Archival / Re: WasabiWallet.io | Open-source, non-custodial Bitcoin Wallet for desktop on: August 20, 2022, 08:59:11 AM
...it's all just a blanket scam and then proceed to criminalize holding all types of cryptocurrencies.
If I was a complete pessimist, I would say this is the ultimate goal 5, 10, or 20 years from now. Bitcoin gives you options and options give you freedom. If you have freedom, you are no longer as dependent on the government as you ideally should be. Ideally according to them.

When it all gets too much for them, the elites could just decide that crypto is the haven for drug traffickers, hackers, pedophiles, terrorists, enemies of the West (Russia, North Korea, whatever is popular at the time), etc. To protect our people, we have decided to make crypto illegal. You have 3 months to get rid of it or face sanctions. Since you like digital currencies, we were kind enough to create this better bitcoin that is controlled and regulated by us (your savior's and protectors). Spend it any way you, like but for your own safety we have integrated this freeze button to stop you from spending too much or any at all because we love you and value your financial stability.

You have told that they said using vpn is okay. In this case would you like to share the link/screenshot of that where they have said okay regarding using vpn. If they said it is okay then there is no reason to lock your fund and if still they lock then they are nothing but a scammer.
After having read a few TOS agreements recently, I can tall you the following thing. If a TOS agreement says one thing, but the site's representative says the opposite, the rules in the TOS prevail. We might not like it, it might be morally wrong and even scammy, but the TOS is what you agreed to and not someone's opinion about it on a forum.

In other words, the SandBoxCasino forum admin can say: sure, use VPN. We don't mind.
But if you do and the casino locks your account, they can sanction you based on the agreement you gave your consent to. Many sites even have clauses in TOS agreements where it says that in case of conflicting information between a TOS and any other public information, the TOS prevails.
4336  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Massively fraudulent Escrow Transaction! on: August 20, 2022, 08:02:52 AM
I don't see any of this being the escrow's fault unless the deal was that OgNasty has to see the tracking ID personally and verify that the goods have been shipped to the correct destination. Was that the case here? If you and OgNasty didn't agree for him to verify the tracking ID, it's not his responsibility to do that.

You could have made this deal safer yourself. Some people already mentioned how.
Since you have two accounts on Bitcointalk, the deal could also have included that confirmation to release funds needs to come from both accounts. Or the forum account + any other type of confirmation like Telegram, social media, Skype, etc.
4337  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Pretending Binanace to Scam People! on: August 20, 2022, 07:32:30 AM
Which seems to me that it will redirect me to login page and steal my login credentials.
Yeah, that's the idea of it. That's why the redeem instructions ask you to log in to your Binance account and they made a big yellow claim button to make it easier for the victims. Ideally, even if you fall for this phishing attempt, there should still be a 2nd factor that protects you in the form of a code that is sent to Authy, Google Authenticator, or a similar app. And if you aren't using the same password across multiple sites/services, all the hackers would get is a password they can't do anything with.

The fake site could also have malware that infects your device and that's another concern. But I believe we are just talking about a simple phishing site here.
4338  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: I found a paper wallet on a beach ... seriously on: August 20, 2022, 07:21:00 AM
Seriously, OP. Which part of "The original owner can't detect it if you don't publish the address" do you disagree with? Unless there isn't such wallet and you're just making fun of us, which can't have happened since you swore.
But it wasn't a pinky swear so the consequences aren't that drastic.
If it's all made up, it will be interesting to follow what this forum account does from this moment on. Depending on future activity or the lack of it, we will see if we were tricked by OP or not. Shocked
4339  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [SCAM ALERT] FREEWALLET.ORG SCAM 6k on: August 20, 2022, 06:59:03 AM
Hello, I'll tell you first, it wasn't my idea that it sounded like I'm asking for money, second, I just had to tell the subject because when they read the whole chat they would see the reason for my concern...
It was supposed to be your money. The reason why you want your money doesn't matter. You can spend it on a birthday party, gamble it away, or buy a car with it. I said supposed to because if you had used an appropriate and non-custodial wallet, it would always remain your money. Now, it's Freewallet's.

this shitty wallet doesn't accept bsc red, so it got stuck there...
I have no idea what "BSC red" is. You mentioned DAI in the OP. Depositing a non-supported token or using the wrong network is your mistake no matter what wallet you use. The only difference is that if you had used a wallet where you control the private keys, you could now take those keys and import them in a different wallet where that asset is supported. Since that wasn't the case, you are unfortunately stuck dealing with a scam service that doesn't want to bother to recover your crypto.
4340  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Trezor, Ledger, and Passport: The TOS and Privacy Policy Battles on: August 20, 2022, 06:49:37 AM
Nice work! maybe you'd be interested in contributing your thoughts to tosdr.org? it's a project that "rates and labels" terms of services, making them easier to digest.
This is the first time I hear about that site. I took a quick look at it and it really seems like a good idea that a service like that exists. It makes things easier to understand what it is that you agree with when you use a particular service. Although you really can't and shouldn't expect that you give consent to something good and positive that will benefit you.

Nice work collecting this, and maybe you can add few more hardware wallets like Coldcard and Keystone.
Yeah I might do that in the future. That's why I reserved an additional post where I can add more similar content.

You can always rent a PO Box that makes it very unlikely someone is going to sell your personal information, but I guess someone could hack and leak your information connected with rented PO Box.
The problem with PO boxes is that not all companies or shipping providers deliver goods to them. A quick Google search says that Ledger uses DHL Express, but that carrier doesn't deliver to PO boxes in all countries. Depending on where you are, you might not be able to take advantage of that option.
