4321  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will Bitcoin collapse by a global government crackdown? on: January 24, 2019, 06:26:44 AM
As such, what do you think will happen with Bitcoin if all the governments of the world ban it? Will it collapse after the massive crackdown on every single cryptocurrency? Or will it survive? AFAIK, Bitcoin is largely dependent on nodes distributed geographically. The Internet is controlled by ISPs which are subject to government demands. If a global government crackdown happens, then the growth of Bitcoin and other cryptos might stale for sure.

Nonetheless, what are your thoughts about this? Huh

It would survive. And at this point it is very unlikely that ALL countries would ban it. If anything, its the minority of oppressive regimes that do. But still, bitcoin was designed to resist this from the start. Sure hashrate and price would fluctuate, but it would find its place and things would continue as usual: 1 block every 10 minutes.

If it became draconian, perhaps more/better obfuscation would be needed (like the Tor project). I'm sure the developer's community would respond to the challenge and go around any censorship.
4322  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Venezuela - communists are falling, so might btc on: January 24, 2019, 06:15:38 AM
Due to rampant inflation/corruption in Venezuela, quite a substantial percentage of the population had chucked their investments into btc.

Looks like the political problem might be resolved shortly, if it does btc will fall if currency controls are relaxed and the population feel more comfortable.

Expect a 15/20% fall as a result.

This is wrong on many accounts. Most people did not buy bitcoins for holding (some did of course), but mostly to evade the draconian exchange control in both directions. A Venezuelan can't easily buy USD, but can buy BTC and sell it for USD. If someone wants to send USD to the country, doing it directly will most likely either be seized or forced thru an absurd "official" exchange where they are valued half of the street prize. So again, buy BTC with your USD, send those BTC, and the local sells the BTC for VES (local fiat, currently the world's worst inflation, above a million percent a year).

As others have told you this would NOT affect bitcoin's price on a global scale. In fact, if the socialist regime falls, the economy would flourish and it would mean more wealth and bitcoin purchases. After all, it is harder to invest in bitcoin when your monthly wage is under 8 USD a month...

As for exchanges, localbitcoins is the only one that matters. The others are garbage, nearly zero volume or outright scammers.
4323  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Pools - Dead / Alive on: January 24, 2019, 05:59:51 AM
they eventually came back with slushpool taking the longest time.

Pools have multiple servers, ping them all and choose the fastest 3.

For example:

Code:
fping -c 1 stratum.kano.is or.kano.is nya.kano.is uk.kano.is de.kano.is jp.kano.is sg.kano.is stratum.kano.space or.kano.space nya.kano.space uk.kano.space de.kano.space jp.kano.space sg.kano.space
nya.kano.is        : [0], 84 bytes, 159 ms (159 avg, 0% loss)
stratum.kano.is    : [0], 84 bytes, 183 ms (183 avg, 0% loss)
nya.kano.space     : [0], 84 bytes, 147 ms (147 avg, 0% loss)
uk.kano.is         : [0], 84 bytes, 214 ms (214 avg, 0% loss)
stratum.kano.space : [0], 84 bytes, 188 ms (188 avg, 0% loss)
uk.kano.space      : [0], 84 bytes, 204 ms (204 avg, 0% loss)
jp.kano.is         : [0], 84 bytes, 289 ms (289 avg, 0% loss)
jp.kano.space      : [0], 84 bytes, 270 ms (270 avg, 0% loss)

Here i would pick: nya.kano.space, nya.kano.is and stratum.kano.is

you can also unplug the fan

I think that is the opposite of what he wants.
4325  Other / Politics & Society / Re: SpaceX and the prospects of Mars colonization. on: January 24, 2019, 05:16:15 AM
Why of course! There are no winds to worry about in space Cheesy

Too bad they didn't use a hangar to protect it, that is precisely why NASA has that gigantic vertical building near the launchpad... A spacecraft meant to be launched into space is expected to be as light as possible, so its no wonder that, if left outside, a 50mph wind could mess it up.

And repairs will take weeks? That's longer than it took to build the whole thing from scratch. Are these guys so demoralized that they can't repair it any faster? What are they going to do if it tips over on Mars? Cool

Maybe this mockup was quite empty, perhaps with more stuff inside it would be harder to tip over (or they would build an underground silo in Mars?).
4326  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Beware Bitcoins Email Hack is going viral. on: January 23, 2019, 03:40:17 AM
I personally received one of such mail. What surprised me most is that a password which I have used in more than two occasions was also included in the mail which initially scared me that the info might be through but I summoned courage and change all the password in all the account I have used it. My guess is that the sender must have gained access or purchase users login information from unknown sources and want to use that as a blackmailing tool by sending those messages. if you are in anyway fairing that your mail has been compromise, you can use velixid.

That is why you never use the same password. The reason they got it is that a service you used in the past got "hacked", the database dumped and sold in the dark web. Then they target you with a message akin to: "I know your secret, your password is blahblah, pay ransom or else..." Its actually rather in-personal (unlike the email pretends to) perhaps a program skimming thru the database and sending emails tailored like that.

Just ignore it. But someone less savvy, and very careless (or reusing passwords) might fall for it...
4327  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should countries accept coins at governmental level? on: January 23, 2019, 03:24:15 AM
Bigger obstacle to a BTC peg  would be the extreme volatility of their national currency versus rest of the world. This would be bad for an third world country.

No i didn't mean pegging, just that it would be legal to pay and be paid in either. I believe Peru has had such a system with the PEN and USD for a couple of decades.

For example, assume you want to pay the equivalent of 100$, that day you calculate how much that is in local fiat OR bitcoin, and you could pay with either (or be paid with either). Of course bitcoin and the fiat would fluctuate separately, as the usd, gold or anything else does.

No, you cannot obtain a private key from a public key. That's the whole point...

Might be "somename" is correct, but for me it feels just wrong to unplug a hot miner knowing that the hot air from the chips gets more or less stuck in the miner for a much longer time when the air cirulation stops.

Like the lamp of a video projector, which keeps fans running for a while after turning it off. It makes sense, but also could be trouble if the equipment is in winter.

Another simpler alternative is to just unplug the network cable, wait what you like to wait for a "cooldown" and then the power. After all, no connection, nothing to work with...
4331  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should countries accept coins at governmental level? on: January 22, 2019, 10:31:20 PM
Forget that.
Money is one of most important tool to govern a country. Every national State is very cautious about everything could mine his ability to disposeof that money at his will. Think how long it took to get to a monetary union like the Euro: it was an unprecedented process, even more thinking about it was a peaceful one.
So basically everywhere in the civilised world you  are obliged to accept national currency from someone paying  your debt, and you must use such a currency to pay your debt towards the State.
Of course that means the State has the big advantage of regulate the value of the money (I.e. inflation) to adjust the weight of his own debt).
So why on hell would the State lose this incredible power?
Put it on another way: what’s the poin of paying your debt in Bitcoin? Are you sure you don’t want instead to spend the bad money (FIAT currency) and keep the good one(Bitcoin)?

There are some countries that don't have their own national currency, and are in fact using someone else's. Panama, Ecuador and Zimbawe use the USD. In those countries they have already lost any control, in fact its worse because they are tied to the whims of the actual controller. At least with a crypto like bitcoin, no one is. The other temptation is to issue their own. which of course could be abused to no end like a traditional fiat.

So yes, they should accept it. They could have dual fiat/and crypto for a transitional period; but that also means abandoning the school of chicago or other economy schools that stimulate debt and inflation. And that is probably the biggest obstacle.
4332  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: John Mcafee on: January 22, 2019, 10:24:22 PM
I would like to hear your thoughts on John Mcafee.  Do you respect him and do you believe he has done more harm or good for the crypto world?

John McAfee likes to do a show. He has achieved success in his life, but that does not mean that he can be an authority in every field of economy or life.
The cryptocurrency market is unpredictable, so his ideas about the price of $100k for Bitcoin in 2020 are taken simply from the crystal ball. I hope this will happen, but in my opinion it is unlikely.

He is indeed a showman and living from that. Of course he is going to make absurd claims to go viral, that is precisely why. I don't really pay attention to any of his claims, its not worth the time. There is people like Andreas Antonopoulos whose speeches are far more important to the community.

McAfee doesn't harm the crypto world, if anything he harms himself. He basically says good things from whoever sponsors him to talk.

But in the late 80ies and early 90ies, the MSDOS world got rid computer viruses thanks to him, and that's the only good point i give him. I don't even care who he sold that company to, by the time it became a windows product it was garbage anyway.

And whatever happened to his life in Belize, is enough drama for someone whom i barely pay any attention.

4333  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: January 22, 2019, 05:13:00 PM
I write this edit also because of another thing. With original firmware I always stopped my miner (when needed) with putty and the command "poweroff". Then it stopped mining, but fans kept running so that it cooled down before unplugging.

This doesn't seem to work with BOS. Is there a way to Power Off keeping the fans running? As I have much higher chip temperatures with BOS (around 80 degrees celsius vs 60 with original FW) it just seems wrong unplugging it without cooling it down firs.

Did you try:
  • halt
  • shutdown
  • init 0

Online documentation seems to suggest that poweroff should be in there, are you sure you didn't use any caps? did you try with the full path ie: /sbin/poweroff?

4337  Local / Mercado y Economía / Re: ¿BLOCKCHAIN AGONIZANDO? on: January 22, 2019, 08:25:55 AM
