Life in third-world country is complicated, mate. If I could go back to when I was 12 or 13 and some people offered me 10-20 USD for a couple of hours sitting in a coffee, doing some non-against the law light work

I have worked for that kind of money from 15 to 18 yr. teaching math, physics and English to others. Perhaps the key is that I decided to do it because I wanted and I was not living in a third world country at all. Should I have found about a forum like this at that age... I would have put 5 hours +  a day  Grin

Let's make this post useful for everyone:

- The old way to build a Startup: A bunch of guys get together and decide what the public wants. They raise a lot of money, hire a team of fifty developers and build and uber-product. It has a million features, a cool interface and works in 20 different operative systems. They launch a huge marketing campaign.  They were all wrong, there was not a market for that product, the features are not the ones that the public wanted and the Human Interface guru was not that much of a Guru.

Result: You have spent 10M USD, have no money left, nobody would give you more. You are finished.

- The new way of building a Startup:

1 Build the cheapest and quickest product that has the minimum features that you think the public like. It does not matter if it is ugly or has just two features. Do not try to guess the market.
2 Market this only the people that you think that would most benefit from the product, preferably in person, and get feedback as soon as possible.

2.1 - Check: Is the market there? Do the users appreciate your product? Do you need to "pivot" your market, features, utility.... even your whole concept?

3 Prioritise the features that the users have asked for. Develop one or two of those.

4 Hit the market again - the early adopters only, limited and controlled.

5 Rinse and repeat.

In fewer words: Spend carefully, fail cheap and quick if that is what has to happen. If you fail, your investors still believe in you, as you have learnt at the minimum possible cost.

4386  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Mass (kilogram) vs. other base units - see why "kg" just doesn't make any sense! on: November 07, 2018, 12:02:16 PM
I would say that F=ma holds and thus m=F/a.  Not quite accurate to 'does not depend on'...

That would be true if you want to interpret the mass a mathematical function of F and a, then it will depend on F and a. You could as well say that since E=mc^2 then m=E/c^2 and thus the mass depends on the speed of light and the Energy (but then not on a and F).

However in physics these have to be interpreted as relations, not dependencies. To clarify: If I take a kilogram of mass to the moon "a" and thus "F" have changed, but the mass is the same. And if you take it somewhere else, the mass would still remain constant. Mass is a property of matter (at least in non-quantum physics I believe).

As I recall, again from waaaay back, we habitually broke everything down into fundamental units ...

Absolutely, units are a matter of convenience. If you are working in the aerospace industry in USA, Farenheit, square inches and other non-SI would be the only things you'd find in the diagrams and tables.n

Perhaps that is one of the differences between programming for the blockchain and other types of programming. You really need to know what you are doing or you risk loosing a fortune or even crashing a whole project. Just like that.
4391  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: A question for sending merit as thank you! on: November 06, 2018, 01:24:26 PM
When someone send you a merit and you have a 1 sendable merit now, Is it not allowed to send 1 merit back to the sender as a thank you when the sender send you 1 merit?

Merit is not moderated, but merit should not be used as a thank you unless you are giving merit to someone that has helped you with their knowledge or abilities.

I suggest that you either go full private, using monero and other privacy coins, or simply pay all your taxes paying a good accountant. What is surely dangerous is the middle ground.
4394  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Where i can buy 100 bitcoin? on: November 06, 2018, 01:17:16 PM
Why don´t you simply open two or three accounts in the main exchanges? Buying bitcoin is very easy. Now, if you want something more private you can use Local Bitcoins, but it will take you a while to get that many.

4397  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Mass (kilogram) vs. other base units - see why "kg" just doesn't make any sense! on: November 06, 2018, 11:16:51 AM

As I recall from waaaaay back, 'mass' is kind of a bullshit unit.  Not a 'fundamental' unit in most systems which make much sense.  The reason for this is that it is dependent on gravity so the chunk in France happens to produce a certain more fundamental artifact (a 'force') of a given magnitude by virtue only of it's location relative to other bodies.  Namely the center of the earth.  F=ma where a is 'acceleration due to gravity'.

I do remember one fucked up engineering system which used both mass and force as fundamental units IIRC, and it was a bitch to work with.

I would guess that 'they' left the definition of mass as the lump in France because nobody gave a shit and it didn't matter.  It could easily be translated to the equivalent of a certain number of mols of a any specific isotope...with respect to a certain inertial frame of reference...

I find quite a few inaccuracies here. Mass does not depend on acceleration (e.g. does not depend on gravity). You probably mean that as it is defined today, with the alloy chunk, you need to know the local gravity to evaluate the mass. That is not much of a problem really.

A Force is something merely theoretical ("a bullshit unit" in your book). If you want to be "realistic" you would always be speaking of pressures, which are fully "real" at macroscopic level.

They defined the weight as that chunck because the trendy thing at the time was to be practical. So the meter was the length of a certain chunk and the mass was that of this other chuck, etc...

They did care a lot a bout those things at the time, that's why they bothered to unify the measuring units. In fact they did not just say... "here is it", the guys actually bothered to assemble several scientific travels to properly measure a meridian of the Earth. Also, the "mole" was something that was established a bit later I think, but in any case it was not an old enough thing to use as standard.

The tendency now is to be super-precise, so everything is defined in terms of the most stable measures available, normally particles wavelengths, speed of light, isotopes, and the like.

4398  Other / Serious discussion / Re: How do you feel about ICO/Cryptos using children on: November 05, 2018, 09:22:59 PM
That argument would be rejected in any modern society.

Maybe not completely. There are many children model agencies for advertising, I am talking about legit business in civilised countries, all legal and regulated.

I think that the parents have to make a sensible choice if they see their children can make some money that may later give them a better education or pay their College in the future. If the "work" consists mostly in acting, posing, etc... and is limited in time and accepted willingly by the children (they normally like earning some money) I don´t think is something that could have a bad effect on them. It could actually be positive, as the are learning a profession by doing... maybe starting an acting career. How is that worse that memorising some of the nonsense that plagues the education systems.

Think of it this way: Children do have their own share of task at school and it is all right if they have to do something that requires some effort.

Obviously, careers or jobs that prevent them from having a normal development, friends, time to play, etc... are out of the question for me. Also, any benefit must be exclusively for their welbeing, education or saved for their future needs.

... kid stuff has generally higher CPM / RPM advertising rates ...

I would not consider acceptable to use the children´s image for anything that are not products for children. For me, seeing an add with children just trying to manipulate the parents out there is a red signal for not ever buying the brand.
4399  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Space Development and Space Science Together, an Historic Opportunity on: November 05, 2018, 12:33:47 PM
...producing it in bulk may be financially prohibitive.

That is the case with many of the new technologies. I am sure that I won't see that in the next 10 years, but I am also sure that it will eventually happen. Cell phones were initially as heavy as a TV and the batteries were stupidly expensive and useless. Yet now everyone has access to cell telephony even in countries that.

There are a few technologies that could (I think will) make a big impact when industrialized, mostly the ones dealing with nano tech, water treatment, personalized medicine, cybernetics and AI and solar energy.

...In layman's terms, apparently 1cm3 of the fibre would weigh only 1.6g but support 800 tonnes...

This is me not believing it. Me wants see it.

4400  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Mass (kilogram) vs. other base units - see why "kg" just doesn't make any sense! on: November 05, 2018, 12:00:46 PM
From Wikipedia: "A new standard, defined in terms of invariant constants of nature, is expected to take effect in 2019.[3] ", in any case you can always recur to the original definition "the mass of 1 cubic decimeter of pure water at its freezing point."

This definition was created during the "Ilustration" period - a period of rational and practical thinking - and it is surprising that it is still making, in my view, perfect sense. It is manageable for "daily use" and corresponds to a decimal measure of water that is something that is frequently used in Engineering, Physics and Chemistry. It is quite simple to know that 1m3 of water is 1000 Kg for example. It makes things simpler for decimal system users.

There's a reason why we have both C and K, but they're both the same "scale".

I can elaborate on that one -  a practical reason: Celsius are very intuitive and easy to understand for "daily use", however when you have to use the ideal gases equations you would need to refer to absolute temperatures. For example:

You have 1 liter of a perfect gas at 1 atm and 10C. What would be the volume at the same pressure if the temperature rises to 20C

Now, Charles Laws tell you that the volume would double if the temperature doubles. BUT that is not true if you use Celsius, you need to refer to absolute temperatures above the absolute zero, that is Kelvins. So the real increase in volume is (approximately)

10 C = 283 K
20 C = 293 K

increase (%) = 293 / 283 = 3% only.
