This is a great idea! I hope to be an early adopter. Good luck!

You should be able to create JSON files in any text editor, so I doubt that that's the problem. The first thing I would try is making sure that your JSON file is in the same directory as minerd. If it's not, you can move or copy it there using the terminal or in Finder, whichever you prefer.

FWIW, I don't think cgminer will run on a 2002 Mac.

Did anyone succeed in compiling this for OSX? Im stuck at a Qmenu/Qgui not found error in Qt Creator..

I don't bother with that, just do it in the Terminal window,
Build the src subdirectory by typing make -f makefile.osx
then go back up to the main directory and do:

qmake
make

Then move the CHNCoin-Qt.app/ directory to your /Applications folder and click on it.

I am using Snow Leopard.

If you get errors then it will be some dependency that you need to install first from Macports, Google for the Litecoin tutorial with the list of Macports you need to install.

Did you (or anyone) encounter any errors with qmake/make? I get this error almost immediately:

Code:
src/qt/macdockiconhandler.mm:50:39: error: assigning to 'objc_object *' from
      incompatible type 'DockIconClickEventHandler *'
  ...= [[DockIconClickEventHandler alloc] initWithDockIconHandler:this];

I'm on Mountain Lion, so maybe it's a difference in Xcode versions? I have the command-line client working, but I'd really like to use the GUI...

Didn't work, constantly get this error: no rul to make target makefile.osx. stop.

Can you please make a step by step fully explained guide with what I need to do to compile on mac osx? A lot of users are having trouble with it and it must not be hard to do. I have installed xcode full version inclusive command line tools and all the required macports, so that is not the problem

I was able to compile the command-line client this afternoon after a bit of hassle. No luck with the Qt part, though.

In order to get things working, I had to make a directory called 'obj' in the src directory. Then I compiled with this:

Code:
make -f makefile.osx USE_IPV6=1 USE_QRCODE=1

Of course, you'll want to remove USE_QRCODE=1 if you didn't install libqrencode as a build dependency.

I had a lot of other hassles related to the fact that I installed my build dependencies using Homebrew instead of Macports. The makefile is set up for Macports, so you should be good to go (or maybe you'll encounter a totally different set of errors).

Yes, you can use two different models without trouble.

Run two instances of cgminer, one for each GPU.

Make sure to disable ULPS as I just described here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=195550.msg2035320#msg2035320

Thanks! I had no idea about ULPS, so you just saved me many hours of frustration. :-)
447  Other / Beginners & Help / Two different GPUs in same mining rig? on: May 05, 2013, 12:51:14 PM
Is it possible to use two different models of GPU in the same mining rig (e.g. 1x 6850 and 1x 5770)? If so, how can I mine with cgminer using both GPUs? Would I need to run two separate instances of cgminer, or would cgminer be able to mine from both at once? Or, is there a better way to do this?

Thanks!

I managed to get cgminer working on my iMac with a 5670 but the hash rate for LTC is over 100 times slower than BTC.

I think that's normal, right? If you look at the LTC mining hardware comparison, most cards have hash rates in KHs, but if you look at the BTC mining hardware comparison, the same cards have rates measured in MHs. I think that's just due to differences in the two algorithms.

I have a 15-20 performance hit from LTC/FTC under OSX on the exact same hardware even losing system memory to a 32 bit Windows Version. It's not just SHA vs Scrypt hashing.

I believe I mentioned something about a performance hit using opencl on mac vs windows or linux.  I found the thread:

Quote
Q: Can I mine with cgminer on a MAC?
A: cgminer will compile on OSX, but the performance of GPU mining is
compromised due to the opencl implementation on OSX, there is no temperature
or fanspeed monitoring, and the cooling design of most MACs, despite having
powerful GPUs, will usually not cope with constant usage leading to a high
risk of thermal damage. It is highly recommended not to mine on a MAC unless
it is to a USB device.

From Here : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.0

Hey, thanks for digging that up. The OpenCL implementation could certainly be the culprit. I guess that's another point in favor of an OS change.

Seriously GUIminer (Scrypt alpha version) is the way to do it under XP/Vista/7 booted to directly with the option button on boot is the way to go. I can't explain why we're not getting good results under Lion or Mountain Lion but if your mining time is precious and you have 2 AMD card in you machine take the side cover off and use a large extraction fan above PCIE slots.

If you still need to be in OSX to do things I'd recommend building a cheap Linux/Win box. The heat stress on your Mac hardware isn't worth it - dead logic board equals major PIA.

Yeah, I think I'm ready to admit at this point that mining under OSX just isn't there yet. The Mac Pro isn't a bad machine for a starter Windows mining rig, though. :-) I'm going to try that out.

I spent a little time on cudaminer on Mac OS X. I was able to get it to compile (and took notes!), and it's able to autotune my GTX285 (showing me a nice KHs in the process), but when it starts to mine, I get a segmentation fault.

After all that, I noticed that someone else filed an issue on Github for the same problem: https://github.com/cbuchner1/CudaMiner/issues/2 -- maybe that'll lead to a solution.

I'm also going to give reaper a try.

Thanks to all of you for the suggestions! The machine is a big tower Mac Pro (with 2 PCI-E slots!), and I do have an NVIDIA GTX285 in it. Maybe the fact that the GPU is NVIDIA is what's preventing me from mining LTC with cgminer, even though mining BTC works fine. I'm going to see what I can do with CUDA Miner, but based on this thread, I'm also going to look into getting an ATI card and/or setting up a Windows partition.

My only worry about mining in Windows on a Mac Pro is that I've heard that Windows can't manage the Mac's fans. Can anyone confirm or deny that? Right now, under OSX, I have the fans cranked way up with smcFanControl, and that's keeping the temperature manageable.

There are tools that you can use to control the fans on windows as well.  The following thread for example.

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/58373-input-remapper-1004-release/

(It does other things, but they added fan control specifically for the mac pro, so you might want to give it a try.)

Great find, thanks!

Hi everyone! I'm a coin noob--opened my first wallet this week. I've been mining a bit on a couple of old computers I have sitting around, but it's slow going! Every little bit helps, so please add me to the lotto: 1EtDdU8dkYdBmX2DNzfyMKq6dV6LuTy1hk

Has anybody actually succeeded in mining LTC on a Mac using the GPU? I have an old Mac Pro sitting around that I'd like to use for mining, and it actually has a decent video card which works fine for Bitcoin mining. When I try to run cgminer with --scrypt, though, I get a bunch of errors and the GPU gets disabled. I found one thread here where someone claimed to have compiled cudaminer under OSX, but they never posted instructions.

Any success stories out there?
