441  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Whose got the best designed desktop wallet? on: February 23, 2016, 06:43:29 PM
Seems to me most altcoins do only minor tweaks to the bitcoin core desktop client.

Which coin has really done something innovative in terms of design? I don't mean features so much as look and feel - the user experience.

I'd like to build something like this for Auroracoin:

https://coinmap.org/#/world/49.97065584/14.49920654/8

Maybe something simpler, using Google Maps.

Would anyone like to collaborate, or know of an opensourced version that can be cloned?

Looking at the price action on some other coins this week we should hope that some Chinese investors fall in love with Auroracoin.

Scotcoin up 10x in 15 days?
445  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Auroracoin - A new chapter in the history of Iceland! on: February 12, 2016, 02:59:27 AM
I just don't think it's a valid logic to say that something shouldn't be changed because it's designer had everything figured out. Everything made my man can be improved.

There's a video called "Billions in Change".  It's an interesting watch, and can be found here: http://billionsinchange.com.  Long story short, it's about the 5-hour energy drink CEO, Manoj Bhargava, spending like 95% of his earnings on ideas to change the world.  But that's not what I'm getting at.

In the video, Manoj talks about hiring experts.  Basically, he says that they don't hire experts because experts know everything about what has been.  He said instead, he wants people that will think about what could possibly come next.  Satoshi did that in a lot of ways, but he(/she/they) couldn't predict everything.  He was an expert of digital currency at that time.  He knew what would happen then, but he couldn't account for everything.

I think that's what we really need to focus on.  We can't possibly know everything about what will happen either.  We need to try to predict trends, safeguard against possible risks, and code for the future instead of the now.  But we can't be afraid to make changes down the line to course correct.  Crypto is ever-evolving.  It's adapting to change, and overcoming possible adversity.

We can't be afraid to entertain the idea of change because somebody, who could even just be a fictional entity for a group of people, said years ago that "this is what it is", and people take that as "this is what it always should be."  Ultimately, that's what BTC is- a solution to the traditional fiat currency systems that people were afraid to question.

-Fuse

With all respect, this is a straw man argument.

No one here is afraid to entertain the idea of change. However some of us are against change for the sake of change. Especially when there is so much work (read "change") that truly needs to be done before this project can move forward.

Over and out.

we see tons of coders trying to figure how to change BTC so the network can support more transactions - these coders don't say that bitcoin is broken, they say it can be better suited for what we need.

Satoshi foresaw the block size debate and spoke to it before 2011.

Changing the halving doesn't give anyone more of an advantage with mining than anyone else.  It actually creates a fairer distribution of coins over time.
What do you mean by "fairer"?

Quote
Additionally, if we aren't talking about "a better way" or "a greater good", then why are we working on AUR, and not just pumping up BTC?  If BTC is does things right, then why try to compete with that?

Because airdrop was designed to get coins into many hands in small geographic area, creating a critical mass of users. With many thousands claiming their coins, this worked.

Quote
Evening out the halving schedule doesn't change the supply, nor does it centralize the power of control to the deciding few.
No, but every time we tinker with the system average users will feel the rules of the game are changing. This reduces confidence in the currency.

Quote
If anything, it broadens the base of wealth and creates a fairer distribution.  It also eases the fluctuations in price caused by halving over the next *nth degree of years.  Sure... acceptance is going to create a skyrocket price increase... but what about 2 years from now when we hit the next halving?  Are we saying that in 2 years, we won't want the price and chain to be as smooth as possible, or are we hoping for a rollercoaster coin that we make day trades on?

Halving does not cut the supply of AUR in half. It cuts the inflation rate of AUR in half. There will continue to be more coins than previously, which is downward-pressing on price.

But if change in payout causes price fluctuations, then what you're proposing merely changes it from a once-every-four-years known phenomenon that people can calculate for, to an ever-happening phenomenon that is hidden and difficult to account for. In fact, I don't really understand how it would work myself.

Quote
The only argument I've heard so far for leaving it as-is is because BTC did it that way, and Satoshi knows best.  The only other reason I could think of is because it's more complicated code.  This can't be an issue with the fact that we're pushing a pretty large update to the wallets soon that will have a change far greater than changing the halving schedule.

I do think that Satoshi has thought about this a lot more than most of us. But I'm also not convinced the current methodology accounts for anything more than minimal convulsions in the price since users know when it is happening and can act accordingly. If everyone knew the supply of copper was going to halve in 2 years, don't you think many people would stockpile now, thus driving up the price in the present?

I don't think anyone is making a 'complicated code' argument.

Quote
I'm still waiting for someone to tell my why it is financially or technically more beneficial to have hard halving schedules rather than gradual block reductions that match the mining timeline.  Sell me on why it's better to leave it as is.

I'm not convinced the hard halving schedule is broken. I'm not convinced it causes wild price fluctuation. I think we have enough work to do without introducing more unknowns and more complexity into the system. I am enjoying the discussion though. Smiley

the fehu symbol means mobile wealth.

What is happening with auroracoins mobility?

Has anyone been able to use an android wallet yet?

I used the Android wallet earlier this week. It is the old one from 2014.
449  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Auroracoin - A new chapter in the history of Iceland! on: February 09, 2016, 03:26:44 PM
While price stability might be a nice thing in theory, if it comes at a cost of confidence in the coin then it is not worth it.

If Auroracoin becomes widely accepted, its price will jump many-fold from here, irregardless of whether the block reward halves or not. In fact the halving will have a minor impact compared to acceptance. We could easily see a 100x jump from here based on acceptance.

However if users don't have confidence that there will not be fundamental changes to the rules of the coin, Auroracoin will go no where but down.

I don't know if halving is the ultimate mechanism in this case, but it was good enough for Satoshi. I'm pretty sure he would have had the capability of programming a gradually-scaling reward system if he had thought that was best. The beauty of the present method is it is easily understandable. As is PoW. That means players can make decisions and act accordingly. As more complexity is introduced, it gets harder for average participants to act rationally, so they drop out of the system.

The genius of bitcoin is that it removes currency from the control of a group of elites who manipulate it for their own advantage, OR who manipulate it for what they think is 'the greater good' or 'a better way'. We should inoculate ourselves against the idea that we can somehow out-smart the market, and we should be very careful to make changes to what Satoshi has designed in terms of the economics of the coin. Adding features is one thing, playing Paul Krugman is completely another.

Most people I've talked to here are very aware of the "Icelandic example" of how to rid finance of corruption but jailing bankers won't do that and iceland hasn't achieved that yet. the only thing that will do that is if each individual strives to contract with crypto currency in your day to day transactions. I now buy my clothes and pay for coffee at my favorite cafe in bit coin. This is one of the best things you can do for aurora coin, approach a retailer that you shop at regularly and give them a wallet that you can send auros to when you buy something. But the biggest opportunity I have found here for auroracoin and general crypto is solar Power. This entire festival is powered by one guys solar rig. I've introduced him to auroracoin and pointed out to him that he can monetize his surplus by mining auroracoin from his solar rig. He has enough surplus solar to power a mini mining warehouse. I've handed out a hundred wallets so far and have each person in a mailing list.

This is awesome grass roots work. Keep it up!

Great idea for the solar power guy too.

Maybe even being part of it somehow.

This is one of the things that got me interested in AUR.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Icelandic_financial_crisis_protests

These particular words help me believe that Auroracoin could fit in well......

"its impact should not be under-estimated. One important development in its wake, and an important emerging theme for further research, is a series of experiments with direct democracy and social media"

There are a lot of things to be sad about the crash but what is most inspiring is that people woke up!

People wanted to change the system and honest efforts were made to implement ideas like direct democracy. For example we elected a constitutional council via direct democratic elections and this council wrote a new constitution for Iceland.

The sad part is that the government that was elected after the crash, the two socialists parties in Iceland, didn't have the guts to implement the new constitution nor the direct democratic process for parliamentary elections.

Now on the other hand there is hope for ideas such as direct democracy, since the Pirate party in Iceland has had this on it's primary agenda.

NB. the Pirate party is a new political force in Iceland still recent pools show them with up to 35% of the vote. My interpretation of this huge change in the political landscape in Iceland is that people have had enough. They thought things would change after the crash but now after seeing the old political parties take power again they are willing to try something completely new and different.

Not that I know what the Pirate party leaders are thinking but I have a feeling that Crypto currencies can play a role in how they see the financial future of Iceland.

It occurs to me that in a country of 330,000 it wouldn't be very difficult for the average citizen to get involved in a political party and make an impact. Is anyone here who a member of any Icelandic political party?

hi ltex

my question was: "what kind of accomodation can the auroracoin foundation give to an international representation for this coin?"

I interpret your answer to this as none at all?

Do you make no room for international representation for auroracoin and if this is so will that stance ever change given that if you successfully circulate auros throughout the icelandic population the focus of project should grow to include natural foreign exchange that will occur bewteen icelanders and foregin entities?

Another way to look at it is to compare the auroracoin algorithm as the central bank of iceland. The CBOI makes provision for foreign exchange, surely those representing auroracoin should make provision for foreign exchange?

What do you mean by accommodation? Do you mean subsidy, or salary or some such? We are all volunteers here. If you want to build something for Auroracoin, just build it. If you have programming skills there are any number of things you can do.

We operate a node that allows older wallets to communicate with the newer wallets.  The newer wallets block connections to from the old wallet via the minimum protocol version.  The US West node still allows the connections, effectively bridging the old clients with the new ones.  It's necessary to not cause a fork between the two versions while we get everyone updated.

Bridge node isn't necessarily the technical term(not sure if their is one), but it was about the best phrase I could come up with.  I guess you could call it the transitional node too.

-Fuse

We want to get rid of the old wallets (so we can push notifications in the future when people need to update), we don't have the keys for the old wallets to do this. There will always be a few nodes that will never upgrade. We decided to restrict the connections between the old and new wallets to facilitate this and have a smoother chain fork in the future.

So this is a 'hostile takeover' of sorts?

No, this 'takeover' has the blessing of baldur who has pointed his auroracoin.org site to the new team's forum
