441  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: electrum wallet 2.8.2 error on: June 06, 2017, 05:43:00 PM
Hello,

I send bitcoins to my other wallet, choosed to less fees and so the transaction is stil unconfirmed. I tried to increase the fee but i cant because there come an error: "error: The transaction was rejected by network rules. (16: mandatory-script-verify-flag-failed (Signature must be zero for failed Check(MULTI)SIG operation))"

What can i do now, im waiting more than one week now

Was the Replace By Fee option enabled for this transaction? If not, you won't be able to increase the fee for the transaction and would receive an error.

You may wish to try and use ViaBTC's accelerator ( https://www.viabtc.com/tools/txaccelerator/ ) to help speed up the confirmation of this time. The service is usually full so you will have to try at the beginning of each hour when it resets until you can get your transaction in.
442  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Fees for New Electrum old wallet.dat private key sweep on: June 06, 2017, 05:40:39 PM
How do you pay fees for sweeping old private keys into new Electrum wallet?

I have an old wallet.dat from 2014 bitcoin-qt (0.8.5).

Followed the instructions on https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Transferring_coins_from_Bitcoin-Qt_to_Electrum
  • Generated private keys from the old wallet.dat

Installed Electrum 2.8.3, made new wallet with seed

    In Electrum Wallet->Private Keys->Sweep

Entered private keys, left default receive address and pressed Sweep

Transaction Report was generated by Electrum and the amounts appeared to be correct (for 2014).

    Saved Transaction in signed_xxxxxx.txn file

    Then Closed.

Now nothing is happening in the Electrum receive address.

Blockchain.info is showing the receive address as being unused.

Still have 0mBTC in the new Electrum wallet.

So my question is shouldn't have I had to pay some fees for sweeping these private keys?

How do I ensure that the sweep gets added to the blockchain?

PS Electrum client has the default dynamic fee structure.

EDIT: Had to BROADCAST the transaction  Smiley

Sitting Unconfirmed right now.

Still not sure how the fees get applied, surely miners are not going to sign my 2kbyte transaction out of goodness of their heart anymore...

EDIT2: Okay, got 1 confirmation already and it appears a fee of 291.594 sat/B or about 18USD was paid automatically by Electrum. Still wondering how that was determined.

It looks like Electrum uses the Dynamic Fees feature, if it is enabled, to estimate the proper fees during the Sweep process. If Dynamic Fees is not enabled, it likely uses the per KB fee defined in preferences.
443  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Cannot Install Electrum Linux Mint18 X64 on: June 06, 2017, 05:35:27 PM
Thank you , it worked.  Smiley

But whilst in terminal I was also given two error messages. Maybe though these are unimportant, although if that is so then why would the information be flagged?

See below

Simon

The directory '/home/simon/.cache/pip/http' or its parent directory is not owned by the current user and the cache has been disabled. Please check the permissions and owner of that directory. If executing pip with sudo, you may want sudo's -H flag.

The directory '/home/simon/.cache/pip' or its parent directory is not owned by the current user and caching wheels has been disabled. check the permissions and owner of that directory. If executing pip with sudo, you may want sudo's -H flag.

That looks to be the same issue as described in https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=225876

Try deleting the .cache/pip/ directory and then recreate that .cache/pip/ folder with correct ownership/permissions as indicated in that forum post and see if that resolves the issue.
444  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Can I delete an Electrum Wallet on: June 06, 2017, 05:31:59 PM
@kolloh    I don't know exactly what I did but on top of that my password didn't work so I made a new wallet and it is using that and one disappeared.   So now I have to decide if I want to keep electrum.  I like wallets that shows btc and USD.

I installed a blockchain wallet but man that is a nightmare to access.  First you have a code you have to enter, then an sms code.  I live alone so don't worry about anyone else being on my computer.

I just went through hell with multibit so they all worry me know since CS is so hard to find.

Thanks for the help.

I have no clue about where to foind the back up.  It's on my backup drive.   If I decide not to use it I'll leave it on my computer, just not visible.

Ah gotcha. Well, if the password doesn't work, it shouldn't hurt to remove it by navigating to the folder I indicated above. Just double check to ensure you are removing the correct one and take a backup beforehand in case you end up removing the wrong one or something.

Just so you know, it is possible to get Electrum to show a USD value as well. Just go to Tools -> Preferences -> Fiat and select USD from the dropdown. Electrum will then also show the USD value for you.

Electrum is definitely worth using once you learn how it works.
445  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: How can I empty Electrum? on: June 06, 2017, 05:27:07 PM
If you want to empty your entire wallet, you can go to the send tab, key in your intended address to send to and press max. The fees will be calculated for you.

If you want it to confirm within a reasonable amount of time, you should enable dynamic fee. Go to Tools>Check use dynamic fee. In the send tab, you should be able to see a slider. Slide it to the middle and you will be fine.

THanks. I did figure that out later.  I've spent so much brain power on BTC its crazhy.

Is there someplace on Electrum where I can see the tx ID?  Multibit linked the transaction to the blockchain Tx ID which I liked alot.

Right click a transaction in the history window and select Details and it will show the transaction ID and other details as well including the inputs/ouputs/fees.
446  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: separate wallets within one seed on: June 06, 2017, 05:25:56 PM
A single wallet with multiple addresses doesn't provide strong separation of funds. I don't want the addresses to be mixed up for change and whatnot.

Is it possible to have a wallet with a seed that allows to have multiple sub wallets?

I believe you would need to create a separate wallet with a separate see to achieve this with Electrum unless you are using a hardware device.

I know that hardware wallets such as Ledger Nano S support using multiple wallets with an index ( pretty sure they use the same seed as well ). So if you were to get a device like this, it should be possible.
447  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: what is the point of using locktime apart from the obvious on: June 06, 2017, 03:23:05 AM
let me explain tht title a little better:

assume block 470000 was mined right now. i go to a service and make a withdrawal (this has actually happened with my BTC withdrawals from exchanges) the transaction that i receive has a locktime of 470000!

so my question is why include that in a transaction, it will be mined because it is over the time anyways with the next block 470001!

I've seem some services do this before as well and never really understood the purpose for manually including a nlocktime for the current block
448  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Suggest a fee if you were in my shoes on: June 06, 2017, 03:20:38 AM
I bit the bullet and did "pay only the required fee of 0.00001000 BTC."
-Sent at 5:13PM  6/5/2017.
-Amount: 0.01128000 BTC, approx $30 according to BTC-e's estimate at the time.
-Fee of 0.00000226 BTC [0.225 kB] was attached. (less than a penny).
-For this transaction, 3 confirmations are required.

I'll update you when, if ever, the transaction is confirmed. Good night!!!

I doubt that transaction will confirm as that fee is way too low.

I recommend you take a look at http://bitcoinfees.21.co/ and you can see the suggested fees based on current levels of unconfirmed transactions. Each block takes on average 10 minutes, so 25 blocks would take on average about 250 minutes but could end up taking a lot longer as well.

Unfortunately, bitcoin fees are absurdly high at the moment so hopefully they can determine a good method of reducing them so they aren't so costly.
449  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BRAND NEW to Cryptocurrency but determine to win!! I have questions!! Thanks you on: June 06, 2017, 03:14:31 AM
2. Is alt coins really bad or a bad investment? For example investing in Ripple, is this a dumb decision (Im very black and white). Understanding any investment can be bad but WHY would a alt coin be a bad investment outside of it simply being someone developing nonsense hoping to scam you out of funds?

No one really knows whether a particular altcoin will be a good or bad investment. altcoins tend to be very volatile and you should be sure to your research before purchasing any of them.

3. For a beginner, is there a recommendation site for buying/selling? I signed up with Coinbase but have seen a list of many (https://www.bestbitcoinexchange.io/)

Coinbase is probably the easiest option depending on your location. It should be pretty easy to get started and purchase coins through them. You could also look to see if you have any Bitcoin ATMs in your area.
450  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum wallet - After a 2/3 weeks will not accept my password ?? on: June 06, 2017, 03:07:56 AM
I have not seen a 'portable electrum version' ?
Just go to https://electrum.org/#download and choose "Portable Version" from the list of downloads. It's only available for Windows.
Direct link: https://download.electrum.org/2.8.3/electrum-2.8.3-portable.exe

OK, then just install that on a pen drive that i will have plug in every time i want to use electrum ?

Yeah, if you follow the above, you would be using the pen drive as your hard drive and all Electrum's data would be on that hard drive.

I do recommend that you test your other hard drive for issues. Using something like Crystal Disk Info to check the Smart Data and look for possible signs of failure. Additionally, you should run a Windows sfc scan on the drive to detect/fix possible errors.

Thanks, i have recovered the wallet on my normal HDD for now, will start a check tonight as i suspect it would take a while...Its split into 2 partitions 160 Gb each.

Never heard of Crystal disk or Windows sfc, but will have a google...

I have NEVER defragged it in years either, so that mat help.

Cheers for help.

Just as an extra note. If it is a problem with the hard drive, then it's probably helpful to backup the data file every few days just to ensure that you can still access the coins if the drive ever fails or your file is lost.

I presumed that was the purpose of having a seed recovery ? I used to back up the whole wallet folder routinely but was told it was pointless with seed recovery

Yeah, as long as you have your seed, you should always be able recover your wallet so there really isn't the need to backup the wallet files.
451  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Can I delete an Electrum Wallet on: June 06, 2017, 02:46:02 AM
Some how installing Electrum on my Macbook I ended up with Default wallet and one I called Use This Wallet.   Use This wallet has a ton of addresses in (no idea why I was in the middle of multibit HD hell).

Is there a way to 1. remove the wallet which has never been used and 2 rename Default wallet.

Thanks

My experience with multibit and their lack of support freaked me out I'm afraid to make a move anymore.  Right now my BTC is in Coinbase which is working fine for me.

It usually isn't recommended to remove a wallet entirely in case it is needed in the future so it would be advised to at least make a backup before removing.

You can remove and rename your wallets by navigating to the Electrum userdata directory which should be something similar to C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Electrum\wallets\ on Windows depending on the Windows version.
452  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Currency storage suggestions on: June 05, 2017, 04:49:52 PM
A hardware wallet like the Trezor or Ledger would be the ideal solution. Those allow you to store a number of altcoins as well and would be the safest method for storing your coins especially if you aren't actively trading them.

You are probably fine leaving them on exchanges as long as you trust the exchange, but if anything were to happen to the exchange, you might not be able to recover your coins. ( Mt Gox for example ).
453  Other / Meta / Re: How to grow from a Newbie member to a Senior/Full member or Hero on: June 05, 2017, 04:46:55 PM
Your rank increases as you make posts in the forum. However, there are time restrictions as indicated above and you can only gain so much activity every 2 weeks.

So it simply takes time and contributing posts to the forum to increase your level.

455  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: compiling on windows Python 3+ on: June 05, 2017, 04:39:31 PM
Hello, community!
I have Python 3.4 and tried to compile Electrum wallet (2.8.3) using this instruction:
Install PyQt4
Install Electrum-2.8.3.zip
In the electrum directory, run 'python electrum'
(from here - https://electrum.org/#download)
But after i try to run "python electrum" command in my console, i get syntax errors in SimpleJSONRPCServer.py line 62:
     except Exception, e:
^ (means that problem in comma)
And i ask for you help. As i read before, in other threads, for succesfull running i need Python 2.7 version. I have checked syntax and see that Electrum 2.8.3 uses Python 2.7 syntax. So, can i compile it on Python 3+ or i need only 2.7 version?

You should use Python 2.7 rather than Python 3.x . I don't think that Electrum supports Python 3.x at this time.
456  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: fee too high on: June 04, 2017, 04:31:38 AM
Yeah, this isn't an Electrum issue. Fees for the network are just high in general due to congestion. People are hoping that segwit will help lower them but we'll have to see what happens.
457  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Why does Electrum force a mining fee change? on: June 02, 2017, 08:21:44 PM
I just switched to Electrum, and sent my first transaction from it.

I tried to set the mining fee manually, but whether I set the "Use dynamic fees" in the preferences on or off, Electrum still tacked on an additional 9 satoshis to the static mining fee I set.

Not that it's a great amount, but why doesn't it use the static fee I set, and instead adds more to it?

I tested and wasn't able to reproduce this on 2.8.2 . You aren't using a very old version of Electrum, are you?

Settings tested were

I was able to successfully enter a manual fee and when previewing the transaction, it used exactly what I typed as the fee.

How are you reproducing this issue?

we are waiting for the roulette , alex could you tell us when the roulette open ?

Seven more new slots been added, i think that roulette is maybe the next thing.
Not to rush things though, we have plenty games to spend our btc and gamble...

Besides roulette can you find in other sites. Wink

Yeah, I think roulette will still take some time as it is being developed from scratch and other improvements may take priority.

So basically 'Kelly' is like investing your funds with some sort of leverage then?  I'm beginning to like this.  Grin

And you have the option to manually 'divest'?  That means get some investment out?

Yep, Kelly is leverage. You can leverage your investment up at the following multipliers: 0.5x, 1x, 2x, or 3x .

Divesting is how you take your investment out. It puts it back into your balance so you can withdraw or gamble it.

When will the slack be open for chatting. Currently it is closed. Also, is there a way to send emails ( or pm) to staff/mangers- I have proposition that you might find very intresting.
Eagerly waiting for ICO, and think this is a great development in blockchain tech. Thank you.

You can still chat in Slack, you just need to chat in the Misc channel. You may have to join this channel if it doesn't show up for you. The General channel is only for announcements now.
