Let's go easy on the witch hunting. Even though the Pirate thing is fresh on our minds, and BFL is kind of a sketchy company...even if this guy involved did actually intentionally defraud people in his past, they *are* delivering products at this time.
442  Economy / Speculation / Re: The Great Silk Road Crash of 20** ...? on: September 20, 2012, 09:11:33 PM
Btw, mega elephant in the room.  How the hell do they deliver the products?  Drug sniffing dogs are at every mail processing hub.  If people could just fedex drugs somewhere, they wouldn't have submarines and mules and stuff, lol.  If it's all a giant in-person network or something, the FBI would post a fake buying offer and just arrest the dealer when they get there Tongue it'd be like shooting fish in a barrel.

Don't underestimate the inefficiency of a government-owned corporation. US Customs is barely even paying attention, nevermind a short-staffed postal service filled with cranky people who really don't give a shit.

The only busts I've read about in the news have come from someone sending stuff domestically via UPS. They actually seem to go out of their way to detect suspicious packages.

I'm satisfied.
444  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: NH & Boston area Bitcoiners on: September 20, 2012, 07:01:13 PM
I'm in Keene, NH.

thebaron, would you be interested in coming to a meetup in Manch? Do you know any other bitcoiners in the Keene area? If there's some interest, we'd be happy to do a meetup in Keene.

Well, there's the Free Talk Live crew and Mandrik. I'd be interested in going. Don't know how many would show up, though.
445  Economy / Speculation / Re: The Great Silk Road Crash of 20** ...? on: September 20, 2012, 06:20:35 PM
any web server sitting only in the TOR network would get identified and found out in like a day.  So if those idiots think they're safe, they're not.
Are you aware that Silk Road has been in operation for almost two years? It has gotten tons of press coverage, and an American senator demanded that authorities take it down. How can you seriously claim that Silk Road would be taken down in a day, and is run by idiots?

I think they make enough money to do things like rent a server, encrypt it, and just use it for a VPN connection to TOR for their main server. And then get a new one each month.

Bitinstant.

If there was any reason they'd shut down, it would be because they're having trouble cashing out their profits.
448  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Going after Trendon Shavers, Pirateat40, BTCST on: September 20, 2012, 06:06:33 AM
This goes to the impersonality of bitcoin where you never really deal with people face to face and its easy to avoid dealing with those you have ripped off.

That's because a lot of consideration exchanged via BTC are for things that aren't exactly legal. I'm speaking of drugs and tax avoidance mainly. If we didn't live in fear of being jailed for victimless crimes if our real identities were to be public for these sort of transactions, then there would be a lot less fraud.

I was thinking about this earlier today.. Don't you think that CIA/FBI have an active interest in this community, just to see what is up with btc?  My guess is that Trendon Shavers is already being looked at.  For all we know he could have been picked up in the meantime. Shit, we did all the work for them essentially, unless they are ahead of the game. Until then, I see no wrong doing in talking to his parents.

I also agree, charges should be pressed, but ultimately my guess is the FBI/alphabet agency would love to know personally with whom he was dealing with, if he kept records.

I think if I was the government, I wouldn't press charges. I wouldn't want any confidence gained in an anonymous currency that's a threat.

i personally do not think we should go after family members but we should go after pirate with lawyers... that is what i am working on now.

extortion and wire fraud has a good ring to it...

+1
i really feel ashamed that so many try to hunt down the family

I think it's because in other cultures shaming the family name is taken as a great insult. In America, nobody really gives a shit.
453  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: This pre-order stuff is crazy....... on: September 19, 2012, 04:39:10 AM
Absolutely. Not to mention how BFL appears to be getting extremely good deals on the FPGAs in their gear. While a BFL Single sells for about $650 the list price on Digikey for the two FPGAs inside of it is $2,000 each. While they're fast FPGAs they are a generation old so it's not unreasonable to be able to get a much cheaper price. However that does mean they have very little room to maneuver if that supply dries up, or if it turns out that some of their parts held in storage from a bulk-buy are broken.

I would just assume they're buying below-spec rejects directly from the manufacturer, which is probably why they have a ton of xxxmh/s profiles to try and get the most out of them as possible.

I wonder if this whole ordeal has one person behind it or a team. And if a team, which will be the first one to crack...
455  Economy / Lending / Re: The pirate speaks on: September 18, 2012, 08:34:53 PM
What contract?  Does anyone actually have a signed contract?  A loan document?  Even a promissory note?

I'm pretty sure accepting consideration is considered a contract.

I am starting to think he does have a lawyer but not to protect him but to help figure out how to run.

If he is a scammer, he would have to be extremely stupid to not have already run off before he announced that he was closing up shop.

There doesn't seem to me any reason why people trading bitcoins for fiat cannot maintain control over those bitcoins until the actual moment of exchange.

Like most things, laziness plays a big factor in why people do what they do. An online wallet is also a lot more portable and convenient.

I do understand why "day traders" leave their BTC/cash in an exchange, though. Internal database queries/writes are much faster than the peer-to-peer Bitcoin network. Trade execution timing is everything to those folks.
458  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Buying Pirate Debt at 1-2% on: September 18, 2012, 05:05:23 PM
I'm not sure I understand how anyone buying up Pirate deposit accounts are supposed to be able to verify that they actually exist.
459  Other / Off-topic / Re: Which is the BEST military rifle? on: September 18, 2012, 04:58:44 PM
If cost was no object, and I could drive to pick it up at the dealer in one of those Lambo jeeps... I would go with an HK416, with an M203 under-mounted, that way I can reach out and touch someone, or clear a room as needed.

Gas piston .223's interest me. Maybe one of these days I'll get to play with one.

good enough for me, I need an address to send deposit to Thebaron.

Like I replied to your PM, you're the next in line if the person who PM'ed me first doesn't reply within a reasonable amount of time of his next forum login here.
