Price 5% higher than all the other exchanges (this used to be really rare, especially for China), and volume dwindling. But will other exchanges still follow Gox's price lead? If they do, there is only one possible result: Price will be INFINITY. |

Buy Bitcoin while you still can. The price is being be held stable by big money for the Silicon Valley conference. The price will soon explode upwards.
TBH that just does not sound right to me, unless someone is trying to prevent a drop in price. In which case, we should be concerned. No VC in his right mind will be looking at BTC without looking at price charts, on which this week long relative stability means nothing. Can't see anyone at the conference having a problem with rising prices  Good point. But I think this started before MtGox bad news and all the recent good news, so that they could show investors what a future stable bitcoin would look like. Even though rising prices would excite everyone, it might look like a bubble to some investors. The most attractive thing you could show big companies at this point would be a model of future stability. Of course, these are my guesswork conclusions. We'll see what happens. Artificially manipulated "stable" market? Investors would spot it, and it's the last thing they would want. I don't think anyone will seriously waste their money doing this. I think it would be waaaaay worth it. Even if the investors could spot it, it wouldn't matter, they would understand the need to present a professional looking product. A conglomeration of big money could hold the market steady, make Bitcoin look professional, and then make billions by letting the reigns go and watch all the corporate panic buying ensue. I mean c'mon, why throw a huge conference in the middle of Silicon Valey with the risk of the price absolutley tanking in the middle of your presentation. Everybody looking at their cellphones...No way they would take that risk. Very worth the money. Has the recent price stability felt natural to anybody? I don't think so, not with all the drama the past week. Bitcoin has reacted for more violently on less news. C'mon, it's just an impasse between buyers and sellers, most of the time with low volume. There is more than one exchange and people all around the world simultaneously either investing or getting cold feet. |

Mind you, the fact that the washington post sees fit to speculate about our formerly-niche currency, and frame the speculation in terms of "political battle", just shows how far we've come. I remember when the price would jump due to any mainstream mention -- now we're a mainstay.
It's almost getting to the point that "any Bitcoin news is mainstream news". That's pretty cool.

I doubt anyone went. I doubt Rontus exists. The supernode conference drama sounded like he took his rejected James Bond script (where he plays James Bond) and he modified it for the supernode conference. At the very least he's autistic. He's entertainment, like a tabloid. You don't really take it seriously. I don't take him seriously but I do like reading his posts. It's like a man getting eaten by an alligator, you don't want to see it but it's hard to tear your eyes away. Ever since he posted "I'm detained in a psych ward," i get a little sad when his name shows up. Would probably feel worse if i bought the psych ward story at face value  Yes, that sucks, although it's not exactly surprising. Things seemed to be getting worse as time went on -- the forum audience can't help. We should send a get-well card -- but him and his family would be far better off if he left this place for good. I'm still not sure if anyone really knew what a supernode was... but I hear worse make-believe in business most days. |

The news does not affect BTC -- but either way, keeping your BTC in an exchange wallet was never the best of ideas. |

The article is misleading as it implies it IS POSSIBLE to become completely compliant with US law regarding bitcoin to fiat and fiat to bitcoin which is an impossibility since there are no state laws that govern such. It certainly does look like they are/were trying to become compliant and that will CERTAINLY bode well for them. Perhaps, with good counsel, they get off with a slap on the wrist. But bear in mind he doesn't NEED counsel right now, as he hasn't been indicted or charged with anything. |

My initial assessment is that the founder of Mt Gox goes to jail for about a decade. Didn't the Napster guy go to jail for a while? I forget that was like twenty years ago. Except -- exchanges threaten to close and actually close all the time. so they're not really uncharted. Anyway, Gox will be OK, this will likely just be a relatively minor inconvenience for them. |

I'm about to launch a new exchange, but it's for China. I was going to encourage USD IN too, but not any more -- at least not at first.
I think the big part missing from most current exchanges is real scaleability; I don't see many properly utilising cloud infrastructure, or parallelising operations.
Having looked at a few existing trading engines when I was getting started, and not being terribly impressed, I have the feeling that there are a few crufty old lines of code still doing the rounds on other exchanges.
This is the best example I found, and it appears a few exchanges adopted the code...
... lock all database tables
... match all possible orders
... Hope nothing goes wrong. If it does, just print an error.
... unlock all tables
... sleep for a bit
... repeat
Sigh.

I have to say I'm completely surprised by the total lack of reaction to this news by the market.
How is that the coinlab civil lawsuit (which could take years to play out and may just fade away) can send the market into a 20% panic sell, but Mt Gox getting assets frozen (IMHO must worst/more serious than the lawsuit) and market almost no reaction.
I'm happy if bitcoin has become this resilient, but it just seems a bit unreal.
There were some pretty deep sell-offs almost immediately, but to be honest I think that most people with skin in the game right now are stronger hands waiting for the next rally -- each "scare-off" is having diminishing returns. |
