I just realized I'm actually in one of those.  Smiley

"The Bitcoin Phenomenon" (April 2014; length: 35min) Sq1.tv
4442  Other / Off-topic / Re: Are we still allowed to call people "gay"? on: October 14, 2014, 02:05:04 PM
I thought gay people were already people?

EDIT: oh, I see now. A guy in a sequin robe has made a ruling about gayness.  Roll Eyes
4443  Economy / Speculation / Re: Your current valuation of a bitcoin? on: October 13, 2014, 05:38:02 PM
$700, That is what I would sell 1BTC for right now. So my bitcoins are worth $700 each.
4444  Other / Off-topic / Re: Do you get paid for being active on the forums? on: October 13, 2014, 05:35:03 PM
It's a type of advertising spam, where they send it to your wallet just so you check out the site.
That's what I would suspect. A lot of it going on right now. I guess it kinda works. We're talking about it.
4445  Other / Politics & Society / Re: why do we not have a poverty coin yet? on: October 13, 2014, 05:32:38 PM
We do have such a coin, it's called "bitcoin".

Money is a store of wealth. It is not wealth so you can't just print money and be rich. Your idea of donating a mining machine might work, however. It would work because mining is a productive economic activity. The problem will be the donation. That is where the wealth comes from in your system and someone will have to give their wealth away to make it happen. If the new miner grows his/her business and expands or diversifies then you could help someone out of poverty.

It seems like a better idea is a micro-loan exchange that requires repayment if the business is successful. The hope of repayment with a little interest will bring much more money in the door, even if the primary motive of the investor is helping the poor.
4446  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: If you get paid in Bitcoin do you have to pay taxes? on: October 13, 2014, 05:09:26 PM
There is no such thing as tax free income. You will have to pay income tax on bitcoin you earn from work, and capitol gains on any appreciation in value. Of course you can claim a loss if bitcoin depreciates.
4447  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: do you sink with the ship, captains? on: October 13, 2014, 03:51:22 PM

4449  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Unarmed teen shot by cops for a sandwich on: October 13, 2014, 03:12:16 PM

And these guys are trained marksmen? Professionals even? I thought they had to pass tests in order to participate, as well as demonstrate continuing competence over the course of employment.
...
A lot of people think this. In fact most urban cops shoot very little and when they do they shoot in some cramped indoor range. If you are a serious amateur then you know I would not be bragging to say I shoot way better than most cops. My dad was a cop (St. Louis county). Even as a kid I shot better than almost all his cop friends.
The secret is trigger time. I shoot a few hundred rounds a week. A typical cop may take 6 months to shoot that much.  Because cops do not use their guns much at all, they do not need to practice all that much. A cop's pen, or a their radio is far more useful.

4451  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Anyone following the ebola outbreak? on: October 13, 2014, 02:26:38 PM
BTW how can we know if this isn't just the latest WHO/pharma scam like the swine flu "pandemic" a few years ago?

You forgot to mention Sars and bird flu. If anyone thinks this hasn't been in the works for a while watch this.

http://youtu.be/BAkzNx3zFtQ

I work on pandemic flu response. It's no joke and one day it will break out and kill millions and millions of us. Flu is a threat magnitudes of order more dangerous than Ebola. I don't know where you get the idea that it is a "scam" or pretext of some kind. SARS is 9-10% fatal and that is beyond serious when you consider that each year that about 10% of the U.S. population is infected by flu. If a hybrid variety like the H5N1 + H1N1 hit us, we might see something like 30 million dead in the U.S. alone.

It can happen, it does happen, it has happened. Almost all people who study this agree that the odds of another huge, worldwide, deadly flu outbreak are near certain. You wont call it a hoax when your piling up bodies on the street with the garbage collection. Think it can't happen?  In St. Louis, where I'm from, the death carts roamed the streets each evening during the "Spanish" flu outbreak. It killed about 70 million people in 1917-18. So many that it was the major factor in ending WW1.

4452  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The official Bitcoin Wall of Shame (pics of said in OP as each is introduced) on: October 11, 2014, 05:14:19 PM
As a newbie to the scene I mustsay this is all very encouraging.... Undecided

The problem is greed. Once people discovered that bitcoin really is money it attracted the usual suspects. Tech savvy thieves and con men love BTC because it is convenient and without penalty. The police are years behind the technology and without a solution to the trans-national nature of most criminals who denominate in bitcoin. These bad people exist wherever there is wealth to be stolen. Nobody likes this.

The speculators love it because they can play games that have long ago been banned in most markets. Bitcoin users rarely favor regulation, but not everybody understands the repercussions of that. You must do your own homework with bitcoin and completely understand the economic activity you are engaged in. Speculating in a wild market is very risky. People often try, fail, then complain about bitcoin because it didn't meet their expectations of being something more than money.

I find that using it as an online payment method is where you find it's utility and strengths. It's fast and final, I do not risk my identity or provide access to my money, and it costs me only pennies to send money anywhere on the planet. If your interest in bitcoin is to get rich then you should know that it is unlikely unless you have some great business idea and the resources to get it funded. If you just want a secure, fast and inexpensive way to send money then you will love bitcoin.
4453  Economy / Speculation / Re: DCB Over, Back to reality on: October 11, 2014, 03:36:06 PM
Ok so the price is now falling again.

We'll hit $200 in the next week.

Get the f*** out of bitcon or you'll go broke soon!

Buwahahahah!  Cheesy
4454  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is stealing bitcoins illegal? on: October 11, 2014, 03:24:40 PM
Ok OP, I've just completed transfer of your bitcoin from the copy of the wallet file I just found on your computer. Now you tell me if I stole it or not.

It's always a lot clearer for the victim.  Wink
4455  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Unarmed teen shot by cops for a sandwich on: October 11, 2014, 03:11:58 PM
A sandwich that fired 3 rounds?!
What do those guys feed in? Lead?

Yeah, that does seem relevant here.
The only people saying it was a sandwich are his family. If he did shoot, a sandwich is not going to explain away the powder residue on his hands, the spent casings, the spent rounds, or the matching gun next to his body. The title is ludicrous. Honestly, what do you think happened? "Hey sarge, look a kid with a sandwich! Bang Bang!"

...Multiple witnesses report Myers was unarmed and holding a sandwich when the officer shot him 16 times.
Where is that from? I see no reference to any witnesses.
4456  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why do people hate islam? on: October 11, 2014, 03:04:11 PM
If peace-ability is the benchmark for a religion then there is only one true religion and the Buddha is his prophet.
4457  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does bitcoin solve more problems than it creates? on: October 10, 2014, 08:25:19 PM
Mo money, mo problems. So I guess it does create problems.  Wink
4458  Other / Politics & Society / Re: An eye opening about Climate change that need to be shared with you. It's FUN on: October 10, 2014, 08:22:24 PM
When it has happened in the past it generally wipes out most life on Earth. No reason to think it will be different this time. Silly humans, always thinking the rules do not apply to them. Time to get schooled by mother nature.
4459  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: is the government going to copy bitcoin and leave us high and dry ? on: October 10, 2014, 05:44:22 PM
We still don't know right now. Bitcoin might be another US govt project.

I would be so proud if my government were capable enough to have made bitcoin. But I don't think they are.
For those worried about a sinister government plot, remember that bitcoin is open source. If the code were able to do something other than what it claims then we would see it in the code.
