4481  Other / Meta / Re: Is Bitcoin Talk's love affair with shitcoins over? on: August 16, 2018, 11:47:26 AM
don't shitcoin and bounties, due to the volumes of visitors that bring, generate indirectly funds to the forum in the form of paid advertisement?

Yes, but if the visitors are bots and low value bounty hunters, then the advertisers start to question the value of advertising. There is a reason why some clicks are worth $500+, and some are worth less than one dollar per thousand.

Not everything recovers, and industry changes. Years ago I made some money from buying shares in a company called West of England sack. They rented traditional sacks to farmers, and farming was moving towards different distribution methods. The shares had slumped, although the company was still making a small profit. It was taken over, and the purchaser paid less than one years profits for the company. So he got his money back from continuing to trade, and he got the assets of the company as a bonus. I don't think the company lasted for more than a couple of years though. I mention this to show that you can make money from a dying asset, but you have to be prepared to get out quickly.

Looking at some of the alt projects, by the time you receive your coins  it may be too late to get rid of them, and in the meantime you've killed your reputation in the forum.
4483  Other / Meta / Re: Is Bitcoin Talk's love affair with shitcoins over? on: August 16, 2018, 09:10:57 AM

Do you mean that 90% of alts won't be able to survive? 90% of them surviving seems a lot to me.

Whops! I got that round the wrong way didn't I. I meant that 90% won't survive. Thanks for pointing that out, and I've edited my post. I must stop starting threads before I've had my first coffee of the day.

It seems that the top 10 will consoidate behind Bitcoin, and it will take something special to break into that group in the future. I expect to see an increase in complaints from the spammers here as they either don't receive payments, or the payments are so low that it isn't worth exchanging them.
4484  Other / Meta / Is Bitcoin Talk's love affair with shitcoins over? on: August 16, 2018, 07:03:59 AM
The blood bath in the altcoin markets has caused a lot of people to lose large sums of money. The talk is that about 90% of them will not survive. Bitcoin is now at over 50% dominance. Will this mean that most sig spammers will not make any money from their board pollution here?

Now would seem to be the time to revive the beginners board as a Bitcoin starters board.  Bitcoin has a golden future, but most of the sig spammers here don't have a future in crypto, unless they start to learn about the industry ofcourse.
4485  Other / Beginners & Help / What's this word 'wanna' on: August 16, 2018, 06:46:30 AM
Learn to read before posting, and learn to write English, so that you can treat the forum with respect - what is this word "wamma"?
4486  Other / Meta / Re: Rules in the forum on: August 15, 2018, 05:49:09 PM
What is the point in engaging ourselves in the forum for weeks and years together to reach better ranks while some of them get it easily just by paying off some money? We will have to stop this!

If you get pissed off with all the spamming bots, and you can't find any decent threads anymore, you might decide to leave the forum. Some members might decide to pick up a few hundred dollars before they close the door.
4487  Other / Meta / Re: Seeking another reporting suggestion on: August 15, 2018, 12:58:12 PM
In my days as a mainframe programmer, I made a fair bit of cash by writing a special purpose compiler to generate programs to validate data input. It is far cheaper to recrify invalid data at the time of input, than to try to detect and correct the problems caused in the system.

Instead of spending hours trying to correct the board corruption caused by these new and invalid members, wouldn't it be better to block them, or at least to contain them in a quarantine area.
4488  Other / Meta / Re: Connection problem error on: August 15, 2018, 07:38:04 AM
I'm surprised the server has any time to handle the processing of new posts. It has to give priority to the registration of bots, merit analysis calculations, and members searching for decent posts.
4489  Other / Meta / Re: Community generated suggestions to improve the forum (+ eventual voting on them) on: August 14, 2018, 12:53:47 PM
Payment for being a Merit Source, even if it’s something low like $100 per month.

I'm not sure that is a good idea - giving them the ability to fly a png/jpg sig would be good though. Smiley
4490  Other / Meta / Re: Community generated suggestions to improve the forum (+ eventual voting on them) on: August 14, 2018, 11:54:13 AM
One merit is nothing for juniors. It would be far better to restrict newbies and juniors to starter boards, and leave the merit system alone.

Animated avatars would be a nightmare, If they are introduced, then please provide a method to disable them.

Removing merits from deleted posts would be a tremendous advantage in my opinion.

I'm not too bothered about badges or higher ranks.

Allowing a compact jpeg or png banner in a sig would be great, but charging for it would mean that only the spammers would use it. I think it would be far better to allow it for contributions to the stability of the forum.
4491  Other / Meta / Re: IDEA: Merit token on: August 13, 2018, 03:41:39 PM
Just remove merit and activity from bounty spamming. That's the way to clesan things up.
4492  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BITCOIN TALK ADVERTISING FEES AND OTHER CHANNELS on: August 13, 2018, 10:39:39 AM
and don't use all caps in thread titles. I put you on ignore for that. It's so amateurish and annoying.
4493  Other / Beginners & Help / Start a thread for "ask a legendary" on: August 13, 2018, 08:12:23 AM
My latest project Ask a Legendary was created for two purposes. The first purpose is to provide an index of interesting threads in the Bitcoin Talk forum, and hopefully this will help new, and not so new members to improve their knowledge of Bitcoin and crypto-currencies. The ability to add comments to a question, means that topics can collect information accross all of the boards in the Bitcoin Talk forum.

The other purpose is to allow new members to create good information threads on the boards, and for the thread to have a chance to be read and gain some good replies, even when the swamp posters have pushed it off the main index page. I'll be watching for good threads, and will be awarding merits for selected ones. Please ensure that your opening post explains a problem in detail, or provides a good basic opinion for a discussion.

As always - no bounty, ICOs, air drops, or Twitbook rubbish threads will be considered. I don't think they should be on this board, so I'm not going to help their spammers. If you are concerned about your thread becoming submerged, then you are welcome to post the link in this thread. Please include a basic descriptive sentence to encorage us to view it. Smiley This initiative is for new threads on this board, and not for individual posts.
4494  Other / Meta / Re: Forum is flooded with Jr. member ranks on: August 13, 2018, 07:21:00 AM
I keep saying it, but eventually the forum will have to restrict Juniors amd newbies to starter boards. If it fails to do this, then it faces the continuing loss of the better quality members, and increased competition from new forums.
4495  Other / Ivory Tower / Will liquidation chop bots kill amateur trading in Bitcoin? on: August 13, 2018, 07:17:41 AM
I'd never heard of liquidation chop bots until I watched this video by Crypto Kirby -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBYPTWyueZo

It seems that when the Bitcoin price is choppy, but moving sideways, these high frequency trading bots jump in to spike the price of Bitcoin. This forces traders with highly geared positions with stop losses to liquidate. The bots can then jump in and grab their profits before the price returns to its previous position. Always remember that one person's profit is another person's loss, and trading cost take a bit more out of the mix. Take care when you make highly geared trades, and watch out for the bots.
4496  Other / Serious discussion / How do these Bitcoin transactions confirm so quickly? on: August 13, 2018, 06:47:19 AM
This video was made in October 2017, and the guy was shopping in a Tokyo supermarket, and paying with Bitcoin.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4J_myvNYG8

He seems to have had his transactions confirmed almost immediately, and I don't understand how this happened. I can see it working with the lightening network, but I don't think that was available then. Is it just that the shop is prepared to take a risk, and as long as the transaction was sent, they don't bother to wait for a confirmation? That seems to be a bit risky, as if it was sent as a no/low fee transaction, there must be a risk that it is never confirmed.
4497  Other / Meta / Re: What Feature you think should've added in bitcointalk? on: August 13, 2018, 06:09:27 AM
Ban posters from Indonesia, Nigeria, Philippines, and Venezuela

Some of them are really interesting. I've started to get to know a few through the fit to talk project, and I think we should encourage them to make good posts about crypto and bitcoin. Very often their only real problem is their inability to express themselves in English. We are working on this to help them, but it's a shame that we dont get more support. One way to improve this forum is via education.

I was saddened that nobody commented on my ask a legendary project, but I'm doing it anyway for my own benefit.

4499  Other / Meta / Re: Censorship on the Bitcoin talk forum on: August 12, 2018, 11:08:36 AM
We need more censorship - the current spam crap is violating  my freedom to read rights. Smiley
4500  Other / Meta / Re: is it possible that ideas/suggestions are collected on one pinned topic on: August 12, 2018, 08:41:45 AM
I've given up on making suggestions. I uninstalled the ILIAS academy that I set up, as i didn't get one comment on it. The ask a legendary project looks like going the same way, but in this case I'll keep it for my own personal use. It will give me somewhere to list decent threads by category, and i can watch those to see if any meritable posts are made. Three or four members are using my blab chat room , and that has been useful to hone a few projects - mainly the Fit to Talk one.

At the moment, it seems you have to take any discussions into a private room/board to avoid spammers.
