4561  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How did Charlie Lee do the LTC/BTC atomic swap? on: November 07, 2020, 09:24:15 PM

Charlie used Decred for his 2017 LTC/BTC atomic swap?  Is this 100% true?  Surprised if true.

I asked because he did 2 atomic swap posts in 2017, one mentioned decred, the other did not.

This one mentioned decred: https://twitter.com/satoshilite/status/910534107058233344?lang=en (5:00 PM · Sep 20, 2017)

This one does not: https://twitter.com/satoshilite/status/911328252928643072?lang=en (9:36 PM · Sep 22, 2017)

Do we know if the Sep 22, 2017 was done with or without decred?

I asked, he said that’s what he believes he used. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

By then LN, solved  Smiley
I don't see how Lightning could solve this at all. If the whole point is to have an immutable and verifiable record then Lightning is the last thing you want to use since by design you make transactions over Lightning without leaving a record on the blockchain. And even if you could use Lightning, it would still require everyone in the country to open a Lightning channel, and so the number of transactions being processed by miners would be just as large (or even larger, if people also want to close their channels afterwards).

I was kinda kidding as I’ve used it and though I wasn’t 100% on the anonymous aspect, I know in its current form it’s not feasible. The multiple blockchains being used I was not kidding about. Seems feasible to me, but what do I know.

I’m pretty certain I owned number 2 and gave it to a coworker

That’s gotta be an old picture because I got it from MJ a loooong time ago and he had a holo applied to it and put his own private key

It is old, a day old Smiley  So it popped up on here back in like 2016 I think and whoever was trying to sell it was apparently asking too much. They then listed it on eBay and i snagged it for a lowered price.
4565  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Would the bitcoin blockchain work for voting? on: November 07, 2020, 12:30:51 PM
The common problem are :
1. Trade off between verifiability and privacy (do you want whole words who do you support?)
2. Preventing fake identity
3. Preventing identity or private key theft (i expect some people might lost their private key due to scam or hack attempt)

Helpful as always, thank you! ..

1- why would the world have to know? Could all be issued where names aren’t ever exposed. every social security number is issued their keys in private by the government (perhaps only by request, in person ahead of time, or maybe it’s issued at the polls only) & Only they would have to know.

2- can’t fake a social security number ( I know this isn’t something all countries have)

3- Again, perhaps you show up to the polls with your ID,  you’re issued a storage card of some type, once inserted your keys are then and there generated or first issued to you.

As I always state, especially in this board, I’m no Mr Robot so I know my “logic” here could be quite faulty.

So far... there have been some 144 million votes counted in the US Election, just for the presidental ballot (not including all the senate, house, governor and other "proposition" ballots)... and that's not even 100% of them (nor 100% of the eligible votes in the US)... imagine 144 million transactions being flooded into the network in the course of 1 week... let alone one (election) day. Shocked

While a blockchain could theoretically be used for recording say the hash of a document of the results, in a tamper resistant way... I don't think it would be a great way to deal with the casting of actual ballots.

By then LN, solved  Smiley  What about using multiple blockchains? Or better yet use increased block sizes?! (Joking)
4566  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Would the bitcoin blockchain work for voting? on: November 07, 2020, 11:33:02 AM
I always thought that this would be the perfect way to run an election voting system. Mike Caldwell ( Casascius/Bip38 ) stated in I believe the  “Rise and Rise of Bitcoin” documentary that this would be a provably fair way to run election voting.  However I do believe I saw once, and I want to say it was Mod Gmax (former BTC Dev right?) stating that this would be an absolutely idiotic idea and not feasible (something to that extent).  So I’m just curious as to why it would not work ?

I hope this is on topic enough.. this question is simply too high level to ask in spammy Politics.

Just an FYI, coin is still on sale from the maker:
https://finitebydesign.net/product/fs-w-24k-gilt-btg/

$100, 46 in stock.

Good luck with your sale Cheesy

If you look you can see he has number 18, and if these coins followed every other single release than 1-10 aren’t released, unless something crazy happens I think bitcoin bar #2 is the only number under 10 to be released. This is number 18. Which is really like 8.

I’ll offer $55 shipped in btc

Nice factoid KY Jelly, was not aware of this. So how/why did this 1 bar end up in the collectors sphere?

Glad I snagged it I guess

His statement specifically specifies the bar you posted as being an exception

This is true, but I was just kinda curious as to why it was the one to make it in to the public’s hands.

4569  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Exclusive souvenir! on: November 06, 2020, 07:47:16 PM
as there is not anything crypto about the piece, and that is not anything more complex than a few magnets, I would offer maybe $50 for it and give it to my grandson. Unless there is something more significant about the company and/or the reason they were presented, I don't see justification for a price tag that equals a close to $1,100

They are a Forex trading Co that does offer 5 crypto coins for trading. However they look to be pretty damn shady, countless reviews of scam/fraud.  https://www.forexpeacearmy.com/forex-reviews/5828/exness-forex-brokers They also seem to be paying off review websites, as even some sites show a 5 star rating but yet they get lit up with complaints.
4570  Other / Meta / Re: Does the "defi" scam shit belong in Altcoin ANNs? on: November 06, 2020, 02:46:35 AM
Most of the projects tagged as "defi" are nothing but scam shit today, though "defi" as a technology itself has a lot of potentials, but just like some one already said here, there are lot of abusers of the system today and this is one of the reasons why defi hasn't gone far from where it is today.
What DEFI projects have you used?
Any project that promises more than 1% per day can be called a scam or a pyramid scheme or a ponzi scheme.

A lot of people invest in these projects with the understanding that they can be cheated / or the project was created to cheat.

Today there is a DEFI ecosystem, in a year they will invent a new ecosystem, but the fools will remain.

So what's the problem: DEFI or fools who want to get rich quick?

Any project that has a stated “guaranteed interest ” period, is a scam ( not to mention it’s illegal to guarantee a return via SEC rules ).

SMoon thanks for posting this. DeFi reminds me very much of Bitconnect and those of the same ilk that caused countless people to go in to financial ruin, many people committed suicide, murder etc ..due to Bitconnect alone. I know Theymos isn’t  going to change the rules around scam projects, for many valid reasons, but at least something like what you proposed could really help save some people from ruin.
4571  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Have you received a call/text recently from a friend/fam asking about Bitcoin? on: November 05, 2020, 04:07:27 PM
Was just kind of curious if many of you also tend to get random calls or texts every time bitcoin goes on one of it's runs from family/friends/acquaintances asking you about bitcoin/how it works etc.  I'm also curious if you're getting more calls/texts this time around, or about the same as other rallies?

I found bitcoin back in 2013/14 so many of my friends and family members know this and I always get calls/texts during times like these.  Often conversations from people I've not spoken to in some time. This conversation I think can provide a unique insight on where things might be heading..
4572  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The main driving force behind bitcoin rally on: November 05, 2020, 04:02:51 PM
There is no question that the main reason behind the rally is Paypal adding it to their platform.  Now of course this in return has pushed buyers ( institutional and retail ) to push money in to the network, especially those who had money on the sidelines saved up for a times like this.
4573  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: A gambler living in England makes a $5M bet on Trump on: November 05, 2020, 03:23:34 PM
I know quite a few people who lost money last election as here in the United States many thought that Donald Trump had absolutely no shot back in 2016.  I myself put a few bucks on Hilary, but my confidence was certainly sky high. This is one heck of a gambling loss here lol.
4574  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Volatility Expected to Rise After the US Presidential Election on: November 05, 2020, 03:20:13 PM
The Presidential election have a lot less to do with financial markets than most people realize.  Historically US presidential elections don't have much effect on stock market, and if they do it tends to be for a very minimal time period.  Bitcoin and cryptocurrency has next to zero correlation with the election, however.
4575  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should I accept Bitcoin for payments on my online store? on: November 05, 2020, 03:13:33 PM
I echo many others in that I don't see much of a downside accepting bitcoin or cryptocurrencies for your business.  I have found a few businesses around my city that have nothing to do with technology or crypto that accepted bitcoin and they said they actually use it a fair amount.  Worth a shot!
4576  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🏈🏈 The American Football Discussion Thread 🏈🏈 on: November 04, 2020, 03:58:57 PM
This was looking good but Jones had to ruin it with that final drive escaping two 4th downs. In all fairness he missed Slayton a couple of times for big yard plays. That final TD took down my final ticket, otherwise i would've been perfect on the night.
It was looking great during the first half he was only 100 yards in then it got very close during the 4th quarter I really thought the Bucs defense will clutch it out in the final minutes but Jones did some clutch plays to seal the deal.

Another close loss but at least the Bucs got the game winning stop on that 2pt conversion saving my survivor pick. Grin

Looking at the Giants to win this week.  They have played some close games and the redskins are just as bad as the Giants.  Giants 27-18 they win by 2 scores! Lol

This is going to be a close game, but I think Washington pulls it off this week.  As we know the Giants only won by 1 point last time.  I think the emergence/continued acclimation of the league of Antonio Gibson might push them over the top this time.  Plus they are in Washington D.C.  I am taking Washington at -3.
4577  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Cryptocurrency Online Casinos on: November 04, 2020, 03:52:07 PM
Wondering what you guys think about cryptocurrency casinos operating via the blockchain?

I know gambling is one of those topics some want to avoid, however as crypto is so volatile is anyone getting into it somehow gambling already?
Most cryptocurrency casinos are claiming to be running on the Provably Fair system, seeds are confirmed by you, unlike standard casinos which are confirmed in the back end and can therefore be rigged!

Other Casinos such as trustdice are offering free TXT tokens each time you play, others are now accepting debit and credit card payments to buy tokens directly without the need to head to coinbase, register, deposit, and send etc

What are your thoughts around this?

I don't think this is really a topic people want to avoid, or should avoid. Gambling isn't a big deal, it's like smoking weed these days ( if you think either should be illegal you're uneducated on the truths ).  Personally I don't trust games of chance online, with any casino, blockchain based or not.  I only use online casinos for games of skill, as I am definitely worried about the legitimacy.
4578  Economy / Economics / Re: Are the Central Banks starting to worry about the public's perception? on: November 04, 2020, 03:11:46 PM
I believe deep inside them, those people behind the Central Banks, they know that "the cat is out of the bag". Billions and billions of the paper money they print will shift into sound money, Bitcoin.

Honestly I don't think that they really give a shit.  Central banks often run with complete control, and at least here in the United States, they aren't elected officials. Just like an already elected in government, I don' t think they really care what the people think when they've got near complete control.
4579  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: People support what Good for them but btc?? on: November 04, 2020, 03:04:44 PM
