461  Bitcoin / Mining / Would this be considered cheating? on: June 18, 2017, 04:14:05 PM
I'm wondering if I could modify a miner's firmware to automatically jump around between multiple pools based on which one started a new block most recently, about once an hour.  So if, say, Slush pool is working on a block and it's taking forever, this code would switch over to some other pool and work on their new block for a while on the off chance it gets lucky and finds the magic faster.  I'm not sure what that 'magic' is called btw, maybe someone could clarify for me, is it 'the nonce'?  I have no idea what that is.  Then if all that happens is my hashing is split between 8 pools instead of one, it seems like ultimately my collective payoff would come to about the same amount.  But if any of them happens to get very lucky, boom, higher payoff.

Does anything like this already exist?  Is this considered cheating or dishonesty?

Thanks

You can get S9's for a third of that if you buy them direct from bitmain.

Don't worry about what's in the house or how big it is... You'll probably end up putting the miners in the basement or as close to the power box as you possibly can.  AFAIK, long cords = more wasted power = higher bills, so it pays to have them right up on that box.  In the basement has some natural cooling involved too, although you'll probably want to set up some forced air circulation along with that, they put off a lot of heat.  Also they're loud, very very loud.

Security might be an issue too.  I wouldn't leave them unattended in urban areas.

I don't think you'll be able to mine any appreciable amount with GPU/CPU mining anymore, not Bitcoin anyways.  Without a doubt you will spend far more on power than you'll ever convert into cash.

Maybe your card could handle Ethereum mining?  Requires about 1.45 gb ram, last time I checked.  That might pay off.

Just to illustrate what I'm talking about, I left my GPU mining for about 24 hours the other day, just to see how much that would pay me on Slush pool.  Answer: 3 Satoshi (100ths of millionths of bitcoin).  There are bitcoin faucets that will give you 10-20 times that much, every 15 minutes, just for viewing their banners.

If you have any cash to work with, you could probably bring in more bitcoin, faster, by registering on Localbitcoin.com, and buy bitcoin for cash from locals for going rate minus 10%.  Then turn around and sell it to other locals for 10% over going rate, cash transactions.

EDIT: I just got a second hand Spondoolie SP-30 on ebay for $300 USD.  I'm running it at partial capacity, about 3.2 Th/s.  That's roughly 100,000 times faster than your GPU.  Better get some ASIC's if you want to mine bitcoin.  To be clear, my paltry 3 Th/s is a meaningless spec in the world of mining.  There are lots of places that have 1000's of devices that are each about 5 times faster than my ASIC.  Your GPU doesn't stand a chance against that kind of firepower.
464  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Power consumption 220v versus 110v question on: June 18, 2017, 12:28:23 AM
I only have one board (of the two that are in there) powered up at the moment.  I need to make another 220v cord for the other PSU.  So it's basically running at 50% (a little less than that actually, some of the loops farther away from the air intake seem to run at sub-optimal rates).

I suppose if they were both on, it would be about 1800-1900w/hr that the admin panel is reporting.  Does that sound plausible or am I misreading the admin stats?
465  Bitcoin / Mining support / Power consumption 220v versus 110v question on: June 18, 2017, 12:18:44 AM
Hello, I was trying to figure out what my power consumption is.

My device is a SP-30, and specs say it uses 1500w per PSU, with 2 psus (I'm only using one right now though).

So I would think my consumption is about 1400-1500 watt/hour.

But the ASIC info page in the admin panel says it's actually using about 880w.  I think this might be because I have it plugged into 220v?

So when it comes to planning out my power expense, am I currently using .9 kW/h?  or 1.4ish?

Thanks!
466  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Spondoolies SP-30 ?? Help! on: June 17, 2017, 09:02:19 AM
Lol ok so I had to make a cable, I used a heavy gauge cable for welders or driers or something that had a 110v plug on one side and bare wire on the other.... I cut down a PSU plug with an angle grinder, exposed the connector pads enough I could solder to them, soldered the heavier wire onto it (with heatshrink tubing around each one), encased all those connections in a big ball of hot glue, and connected the other end's bare wires to my stove.

Just running one of the two boards but I'm happily getting 1.5TH/s for now!   Later tomorrow I'll get the right cords, run both boards, and tweak the settings until I can hopefully get it up to the 4.7 rated max.

Any suggested settings I should use like voltage / fan speed etc?  For now that's mostly all the default, I lowered my 'reset if under 3000' to 0 so hopefully it just doesn't reset, and set my fan speed to 'Auto' (from '80').

Thanks for your help!

Hey thanks for the info.

Guess I'm getting a new cord tomorrow morning!

Can I use a three prong dryer / oven 220v outlet or does it have to be the four prong?

Maybe you know exactly what kind of cord I should be using off Amazon etc?

Thanks again
468  Bitcoin / Mining support / Spondoolies SP-30 ?? Help! on: June 17, 2017, 04:09:06 AM
Hi

I got a SP30 in from ebay today, and I'm having some troubles getting it running.  Maybe someone here could offer some pointers?

When I plug it in, I get ethernet lights but no ready/info lights (except the ready light does turn on for a couple seconds when I first power it on)

I found the SDRECOVERY.rar and SDBOOT.rar files on wayback machine, and I tried using win32DiskImager to write them to a new 16gb class 10 sd card, and it does show up in windows as expected (with boot.img etc), but neither seems to produce any effect in the device.

For the moment, I'm running it off 110 using two separate cables, and the fans do kick on, seems to be getting power, but it does not show up in my router's list of attached devices.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears.  Thanks!

PS: Does anyone know what the little switch in front is for?
