Quite some Safesites online already.

Test The SAFE Network and upload your site

Add your Safesite to the topic

The network will probably get a "reset" when updates are launched. You might loose your data in this testfase, so keep a backup.

Anyone having connection issues?   Huh

Yeah, the registering to the network got stuck. I re-started the SAFE Laucher again and it worked fine. Next I did the Demo App and it worked well. Able register a domain and uploaded my own website. David said there are still some 5 sec. delays in the software for the Devs to see what happens. They also didn't optimize for speed yet. Check the topic on the forum. People try to run it on different Linux systems as well.

Here's a video with a walktrough for people on Windows.

Your data is speard over the net in small chunks and encrypted and in multiple copies. No farmer can actually know what they are storing would need all chunks and key to open the encryption.

Yeah and before it's send to the farmer to store, the data managers will use obfuscation on the chunks so even if you stored your own chunks you wouldn't recognize them. The encryption and obfuscation on this network is almost mental. In this piece below most of it is covered. Probably not even all...

so will there be a good chance to mine up quite a few if you're one of the intial vaults?

You mean like in the beginning when people run Vault at home when Safecoin is build in? Hard to say, the reward per MB is depending on the amount of available space in the network. The network tries to have 20% of free space all the time. So when more people run Vaults and the free space goes to 30% or 40% the reward in Safecoin per MB. will go down. This way the network should balance itself out. David (founder Maidsafe) wants everybody to have a fair chance to farm some Safecoin. So even poor people that can't afford to buy it should be able to run a Vault some time and earn their coins to use them in the network. This is far different from most alt-coins.

Oh I would like to be wrong as I am invested in MAID, but the reality is they are still really far from done. Even IF they get it to work somehow on a small scale will it ever scale up in a big way without major changes and years of coding...

OH and BTW has any BIG tech companies been interested in MAID? Like for example Microsoft and IBM has been very interested in Ethereum. I think that also means something. The lack of interest from major parties.

Look at that ETH GO MAN !! Dinosaur Bitcoin soon rides behind!

I own Ethereum as well, I'm there with you  Grin

And about Microsoft and IBM investing (time and effort that is) in Ethereum, that's really great. They have a technology out and big companies join them. But to me that doesn't mean that much. The Blockchain (which breaks at 7 Ts/sec.) is a hype at the moment. We've seen hypes before. How about all these televisions and their 3D-glasses? Maidsafe is indeed brand new tech. But we'll find out how it scales in the coming weeks. Lot of people ready to join the testnet I think. We'll be at thousands in weeks when people are asked to run Vaults at home.

MAIDSafe has been in development since 2006 so close to 10 years now. They are just doing the first tests now.

My analysis is that they will run into a wall and realize they have to make some fundamental changes and rewrite the hole damn thing. Release maybe in 2020.

Their CEO is like a stubborn dinosaur. He is very hungry, but is too slow to catch anything.

It's 10 years since the company was founded this week.

Most of the time was about doing research, getting patents and find investors. Active development started in 2014 after the crowdfunding.

The software is already re-written in Rust.So was the architecture in 2015.

There was a POC in 2008 written in Phyton as explained in this google Techtalks video

So your analysis is based on a lack of knowledge where you don't really have a clue what you are talking about. That's okay, free speech isn't it? Although I have to say you were right about those 10 years. Good job! The test-network goes live this week but feel free to test it somewhere in 2020. I think you might be a bit late...

So what can you expect in the next few days? Firstly, and with your help, we will be testing the Launcher and releasing an application that demonstrates key features of the SAFE Network. This will not only represent the largest field test (if as many people as we hope participate) of the SAFE Network to date, it will also provide some essential real world feedback on several key (and some world first) areas:

  • Account creation (self authentication) and login;
  • Data storage and retrieval;
  • Running demo applications against the Launcher API;
  • A demo application enabling the hosting of SAFE websites;

At the request of the engineers this testing phase will not enable the community to run their own vaults at this point, rather they will be able to store and retrieve data via the demo application on our test network. This allows the client to be tested in a stable environment, one without churn (nodes leaving and joining the network). It also enables other projects that people are currently developing or wish to begin development on to progress as we progress, allowing everyone the opportunity to move forward together. The next phase after the development team are happy with the way the network is behaving in this stable environment will be to add churn into the mix and get the MVP into everyone's hands, enabling you to all run vaults from home. The team do not want to sign off on the MVP until this extensive round of testing has been completed and for this we need large scale participation from the community.

Just think of Safenet (the network) like this:

  • You install a client, just like JAVA it runs when you start your computer
  • A map is created on your desktop just like "Dropbox". It gives you cheap storage paid for with Safecoin
  • At the same time you can surf safe:websites or websites that end on .safe in your browser
  • People can create an address in a DNS (decentralized) like safe:yourwebsite
  • You can log on to the system using a username:pass and PIN. Once done, you register a unique profilename for the whole network
  • You can send someone some Safecoin by just using that profilename. No long addresses like Bitcoin
  • All data on the network is Self_Encrypted and split into chunks. When you download something your client put it back together.
  • People can run a Vault where they offer disc space to the network. When chunks out of your Vault are requested you can earn some Safecoin out of the network
  • There's a messenger App in the system as well. You can chat fully encrypted with peers.
  • There will be a so called App launcher where people can build Apps that use Safenet as the backend.

These are a lot of big ideas. When the MVP (Minimal Viable Product) is launched we probably can:

  • Visit safe:websites or websites that end with .safe in our common browsers
  • Put your own HTML website online and register a URL in the DNS (Decentralized Naming System)
  • Create an account on the network with your own username:PIN:pass
  • Register a profile name for use on the network
  • Use the messaging system
  • Store up to 1GB of data

There are some big warnings in the dev-update. Your stored data might get lost, they might take the network down for some time due to bugs. New binaries might be forced to re-join the network again. This MVP is just to test the software and see how things work on a bigger scale. Safecoin isn't build in the system right now. This will happen when the network is stable. They'll create a new sprint to add Safecoin to the system and they might even start with "test Safecoin" to test out the Farming system.

Very interesting times are coming. Expect a lot of testing, some bugs etc. Feel free to join the group that already has their websites ready for launch. It's like the beginning of the old internet all over again.

TL;DR : No network yet, no installers yet, but some good progress over the last week.

So a very exciting and manic week last week and more of the same this week; however, without being a party pooping spoil sport I think it is essential to set expectations. The MVP will initially come with a set of limitations; I am currently documenting these limitations and these shall be shared with everyone as documentation accompanying the actual release. The MVP will very much be a rolling release, with these limitations being crossed off the list with each software update, which at the outset will occur on a very frequent basis, driven by feature updates. Expect the network to be up and down, with software required to be updated and data stored on the network to be wiped during this community testing period. Initially this may not be for the faint-hearted and will require participants to closely follow updates from the team to stay on the latest network.

Some mocks:

473  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] IPO of MaidSafe:  Entering the Future of the Decentralized Internet on: February 16, 2016, 09:20:15 AM
I see one problem or maybe it's not problem Smiley

Now we have 452,552,412 MAID

Safecoin will be 4 000 000 000 000 this is huge marketcap arround 220 000 000 $ with current price. - Third place in te top.

When the network goes live, Safecoin isn't implemented at first. This will take some months. So you'll be able to use the software as a test for free. When Safecoin is added, the MAID out there can be switched 1-on-1 for Safecoin. So in the beginning, only these half a billion will be inserted in the network at random addresses. When the Farming starts (with Safecoin live) it won't be that different from Ethereum where new coins are created every block. Only on Safenet they are created when someone Farms 1. And they're destroyed when someone buys space on the network to PUT data. The destroyed one can be created back when someone Farms that address again. So the growth is limited by the fact that coins are destroyed (no owner of the address) as well.

More decent progress this week - we have demonstrated the ability to create accounts, log in, get and put data, just without churn handling and NAT Traversal. So what do we have left to complete before the MVP is set free (and I can stop sounding like that broken record)?

NAT Traversal integration into Crust (allows for people behind different types of routers to connect with each other and not just rely on direct connections between nodes in the network);
Routing Integration with Refactored Crust;
Churn Handling in the Vault library (showcasing with Routing and Vault examples);
Completing the Launcher updates from the client libraries.

Maidsafe Blog: Development Update

Here are some highlights:

All of our energy and effort in the last few months has been focused upon delivering a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) as quickly as possible. What will the MVP look like and what will you be able to do with it? The MVP will enable users to install the software and connect to the network from their computer, store and retrieve files, browse sites hosted on the SAFE Network and message other users.

Anyone here able to get me in touch with one of the project's key members?  I really would like to set up time to do a hangout with swarm's dev's and community.  Oddly, I received an anonymous message asking me to please reach out to you guys because your community was very aligned with how my personality and motivations (at least that is what this person thinks).  So I reached out to fractastical (the person this person told me to seek out) but I have not received a response.  So if anyone can help me please let me know.  I think I have some ways to help projects such as this because it comes from the same motivation as my work comes from.

Check your PM.

Someone can explain me what is RUST-5 ?? Cant access the whitepaper. Thank you

Rust is a program language. The Maidsafe Dev-team works in so called "sprints" where they focus on delivering results, debugging etc.
Rust 5 is sprint number 5. At the end of this sprint we should have installers to connect to and start the global Safenetwork.

Hello,

        What type of encryption will Maidsafe be using?

        The only thing I could find is that it might be using RSA 4096 bit encryption.

Different ones. AES will be there as well. Here's the whitepaper for Self_Encryption. But that one might be different from the PKI.

This is pretty confusing, is there a beta version of this live yet? Can I use a low end pc with large storage space to farm?

From the Dev-Update:

Quote
We have continued to make steady progress on the plans we outlined a couple of weeks ago; we are very much on course to deliver the RUST-5 objectives and for community testing to begin. Thanks as always to all the Dev team members for taking the time to share their progress with the whole SAFE community.

Delivering the RUST-5 objectives means they deliver a public network where we can test out the technology. Should be there in the coming weeks, was delayed due to a number of bugs. There was already a local network possible but this will be the real deal where we can connect globally. There's a very long topic on Farming and the best hardware to do so. Not clear that much because nobody was able to test this feature on a global scale yet. But yes, even a low end PC should give you the opportunity to Farm. There's even talk about raspberry pi's etc. David (the inventor of Maidsafe) wants all people to be able to Farm, not only big companies like we see in Bitcoin mining.
