461  Economy / Speculation / Re: Simple reason for the price spike... why this weekend's dip will be deep on: July 11, 2013, 05:47:16 PM
BTC was really oversold so a snap back rally isn't surprising.  This is a key area of resistance worth watching, a break above $100 would be very bullish but I put greater odds on a break downwards.
462  Economy / Service Discussion / Blockchain.info Authorize Log-In Attempt on: July 11, 2013, 05:43:46 PM
Received an email that, "An attempt to login to your blockchain.info wallet was made from an unknown browser.  Please confirm the following details are correct:"

Then it lists time, IP, and computer info followed by a link.  This is the first time I've seen this email, seems legit but I didn't login and I have 2FA enabled so I should have received a text with a code if someone was trying to logon.  I'm not really worried since there's nothing in the wallet but just want confirmation if anyone received this type of email before.  Thanks.
463  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BitShares] Proof of Minimal Work Concept Feedback Wanted (tips will be paid) on: July 10, 2013, 07:01:50 AM
I have been thinking about this particular problem and I believe the key isn't in agreeing to a universal time, but elapsed time.  I know exactly how much time has elapsed in the past 10 minutes with very little drift.   Every node sending me messages also knows exactly how much time has passed.   Furthermore, almost every node has access to NTP so has a reasonable estimate of what to expect.    Every node would only build off of blocks that had relatively accurate times (in their opinion) and every node could validate that every other node waits at least 10 minutes before sending them candidates for the next block.   So there is no need to agree on universal time, only to vet that other nodes only broadcast at the proper intervals.   Nodes violating this social behavior would be disconnected.    The network would develop a rhythm.  So lets define a simple heuristic that a node could use with near zero knowledge... it will only forward new blocks it receives 10 minutes after receiving the last block it accepted.   The node knows who informed it of that last block and thus could instantly detect other nodes 'cheating' and sending too soon.

If I understand correctly, the idea behind this is to erase the "first to publish" reward as you put it and rather have blocks rewarded to those who charge the lowest amount of fees (and consequently the highest % towards dividends).  However, what happens if multiple miners come in at the same bid in terms of mining fees?  How would that be resolved?  Wouldn't you then need to reward the first to publish?  If the node waits 10 minutes before receiving candidates for the next block, will it still know which bid was submitted first in the scenario where fees between two miners come in equal?

Other comments on shipping are welcome.

Escrow?  Also, is shipping worldwide?

When cows were used as a medium of exchange, nobody called it “biocurrency.” In the cultures that traded seashells to escape the inefficiency of barter, they didn’t call it “calcicurrency.” It was just money.

New forms of money such as bitcoin are exciting for their technical underpinnings, but we might not want to make them more forbidding by calling them “cryptocurrency.” Cryptography is an important part of many digital currencies’ administration, and it is central to bitcoin, but at their core they are all just money.

Concluding paragraph....

Quote
The choice is not whether to have digital currencies. The choice is between adopting digital currencies the hard way or the easy way. The hard way is trying to outlaw banking, payments, and other financial services denominated in new currencies. The easy way is embracing them, making them part of mainstream financial systems, and accepting the greater liberty, power, and privacy they accord to individuals.

467  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Would you buy a on: July 08, 2013, 09:35:51 PM
Short answer: No, I wouldnt.

That's true, you wouldn't ever have enough money to buy it.

You're asking for opinions and getting offended when people are giving them to you.  You're looking rather immature and unprofessional right now.
468  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS/Groupbuy] Bitcoin Guitar Picks on: July 08, 2013, 07:51:49 PM
The change in bitcoin price will affect the price you guys have to pay.  With the recent change in BTC price, the price will need to be adjusted.  I tried to find a BTC/USD price ticker so I could tie the price to the dollar, but had no luck finding one Sad .

Here's a ticker at 37.5 cents (rounded).

If you want to adjust it, go to http://btcticker.appspot.com
469  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Would you buy a on: July 08, 2013, 07:41:22 PM
you dont need a device.. just the programming skills to make a good app for the current range of smart phones.

most people do not want to spend $20-$200 just to store there cash, but an app adds a layer of security to your phone.. that would work

Phone can get hacked, device can not. Would you prefer to use a phone as a cold storage device?

People have google authenticator app but they still use yubikeys.

I'd rather use a paper wallet for long-term and a hot wallet with just a few coins on my phone.
470  Economy / Goods / Re: Fernandes guitar and Randall amp 2.5 BTC OBO - free shipping, no escrow on: July 08, 2013, 03:56:20 AM
Looks like it might be a Retrorocket but not positive.  The fact that you won't escrow is probably what's turning people off.
471  Economy / Speculation / Re: Rally time! We hit bottom, time for trend reversal. on: July 08, 2013, 03:46:12 AM
Looks more like typical short covering to take profits after a significant decline.  I think there's a chance it goes into the 80s but better chance that the short/medium trend is still down.
472  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Discussing... CoinBase's Buy/Sell System on: July 07, 2013, 08:12:42 PM
Anyone know how Coinbase bases its spot price?  It used to be tied to Gox then it decoupled a while back.  Today Gox was at $69, CampBX, Bitstamp, and BTC-E were all around $65.  Coinbase was asking $69.50 to purchase so it can't be an average of the exchanges.  Are they just taking Gox and adding a slight premium for slippage?

Ive asked this question before and I only get shady answers from Coinbase. They just say that its a mathematical formula and the price is what it is, they will not adjust it for you in any (or their fees). As far as I can tell, it's a mixture of (1) how much BTC you are selling or buying to them - try entering the sales for 10 BTC and then enter 100 BTC and you will see what I mean (2) the number of BTC that they have bought that day. You can see this by checking their buy/sell spread in the morning and then again in the evening. Ive seen instances where there is zero spread between the two and its usually in the mornings and (3) the liquidity providers that they have. This is why the price changed dramatically when Gox went down. My guess is that they were using Gox as a liquidity provider (a counter-party). But once the USD withdrawals stopped, they stopped using Gox and set their own price with a combination of the above and (my guess) the prices on both CampBX and Tradehill (and maybe a few others).

Again, these are all just my guesses after doing many, many transactions with Coinbase

Thanks.  I never tried changing the amount of BTC to see if that affects the price.  I'll have to check that out.  Do you know what time they typically purchase Bitcoin each day?  Is it Eastern or Pacific timezone?
473  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: 0.25 BTC Bounty - Show me a Mt Gox USD Withdrawal :) on: July 07, 2013, 08:10:05 PM
This should be interesting, surely someone will have done a withdrawal within the past few days.  I'm done with Gox so I can't, and I wouldn't at that price since it wouldn't even cover the wire cost but for someone who was going to do a withdrawal anyway, just an added bonus I guess.
474  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: 22000 USD SCAM because of Phishing and Bank Transfer Chargeback on: July 07, 2013, 06:06:10 AM
How did you lose $22,000?  The amount of Bitcoin lost doesn't come close to that figure at current rates.  Did they pay you significantly higher than the current spot rate?  Are you counting the rest of your cash that was frozen in the account?
475  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: If you used Brainwallet.org - MUST READ! - Security Breach! on: July 07, 2013, 05:28:26 AM
Compressed or uncompressed only applies to public keys, not private keys.  All private keys are the same, there is no compressed form.

Why is it then that under the details tab on bitaddress.org is there an option of "Private Key WIF (compressed, 52 characters base58, starts with a 'K' or 'L')?"

I'm getting an invalid security certificate warning.

Edit:  Doesn't seem to be from the original site but from the link you provided:  https://1v.io/gladoscc
479  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Someone is using my picture of Avalon on eBay on: July 06, 2013, 06:28:36 PM
That's really quite cunning.

I think you need to come up with a new procedure for escrow so that people know that each instance is a real escrow instance.

E.g. a website you own and publish with a list of escrow amounts, dates and for whom. It can then be up to the users to verify each other's identities.

I always send out escrow contracts directly via PM, and signed with my public key to prevent such MITM attacks. I guess I could set up a site for this, but escrowing is just a hobby for me...

I wouldn't worry about it, even the guy who accused you of scamming by posting a fake contract was called out pretty quickly.  Most people familiar with Bitcoin are familiar with verifying public keys.
480  Economy / Economics / Re: Portugal on the Brink on: July 06, 2013, 06:12:46 PM
How is this different from the 52 states (plus the rest of the world) borrowing dollars from the Federal Reserve, dollars, which too get printed out of thin air?

The difference is Portugal along with some of the other PIIGS are serial defaulters.

Quote
Portugal has defaulted on its national debt five times since 1800, Greece five times, Spain no less than seven times (and 13 times in all since 1500).

By contrast, Anglo-Saxon countries rarely, if ever, default. In this country, we haven’t reneged on our debts in nearly 1,000 years, though there have been close shaves. The same applies to Canada, Australia and the United States.
