...annnnd it's paid for itself, USD-wise.  33 BTC earned in just 91 hours.   Shocked

A bit more to go to break-even BTC-wise yet.

Thank you for the great pictures!

Ngzhang, you should feel very proud!

- originally, due to lack of high quality photos and some misunderstanding, I was under the impression that the fans were exhausting heat, blowing out. Now from your photos it *looks* like the fans are intake fans to blow cold air into the case (makes much better sense) can you confirm?

- also, I am assuming that I should have no problem replacing the PSU with a modular one? (I've got a silverstone 1200 gold that is sadly under-utilized atm) - should easily handle a fourth module when the time comes.

- I was also thinking of using some ducting in the extra space from the missing 4th module to force air through the fins. I'm now thinking this is unnecessary as the bottom module should be the coolest one anyways, and ducting may have no effect on increasing air flow through the upper 2 modules.

After seeing some of Ngzhang's comments I'm thinking the only mods I'll be making are replacing the PSU and directing an AC unit blowing towards the intake. And of course adding 4th module when they come available  Grin

The upper side close to PSU is very crowded, I think the airflow here is not very good, I can feel by hand that module close to PSU is the hottest one. So I plan to move them to the lower part, but I'm afraid the cables are not long enough. Anyway I plan to use an external blower fan directly blow on top of them no matter the temperature. I might take everything out of the box and put them into my totally ventilated basket on balcony  Cheesy

2 points:

1, keep the case closed.
2, the 40pin ribbon cable our using is not IDE cable. IDE cables have some internal connect.

Thanks for the advice, is this mean that I can not use the own cable to re-arrange the modules? I think they should be shifted to the other side of case to avoid overheating close to the PSU  Undecided
4644  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is competition healthy for Bitcoin? on: March 16, 2013, 02:14:50 PM

In view of recent events I've come to the conclusion, even if it's only for the bold portion above, supporting litecoin is essential, it's similarity to Bitcoin is a stregnth not a weakness.

Agreed, bitcoin has reached a maturity/complexity level that politics has become a big concern, there is no existing clear governance structure. The increase of mining power after ASIC release forced many people out the game. LTC on the other hand are relatively young, and GPU is available everywhere, it does not have those problems right now

Imagine that one day, bitcoin forked into two chain because of the conflicting interest of different involved parties, while LTC keep a promise of never change the existing protocol (ironically, it is because no developers are messing with the code Grin), I guess LTC price will bypass BTC

Then BTC will become a medium of exchange that can satisfy increased transaction volume with larger and larger block size, the price stays stable. And LTC becomes a store of value that could not handle too much transaction but the price is rising 50% per month, everyone is eagerly waiting in line to get their transaction in queue  Roll Eyes

4645  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is the 21 million bitcoin limit unchangeable? on: March 16, 2013, 01:08:06 PM
Of course that assumes that the economic majority do want to backtrack to and/or stay with 0.7. If they did not, then maybe the rumours that [users or entities that economically serve as proxies for users] were pressuring for larger block sizes (that is to say, for versions 0.8 and up) might have been exaggerated.

I seem to recall someone suggesting Gavin was under pressure from big businesses to get larger blocks into play, other than that maybe there just happen to be a whole bunch of what maybe amount in this issue to "forum trolls" (said with some affection and tongue in cheek) loudly pushing for something the actual economic majority does not actually consider more important than first ensuring we can even actually in real life use the max block size we already had specified in capital letters in the source code.

Relevant IRC:

Quote
14:49   gavinandresen   Luke-Jr: argument for another day, but I can almost guarantee that the blocksize limit will be raised in less than 2 years, just based on pressure from the big businesses using the chain (and no, NOT satoshidice)
14:50   gmaxwell   gavinandresen: If pressure from startups with business plans come in conflict with the health of the system then thats an issue we'll have to resolve.
14:50   gavinandresen   gmaxwell: not startups with business plans, existing companies like BItPay and Coinbase that are seeing exponential growth

Thanks for bring this up, I think this is inevitable when bitcoin gained enough business support, especially after the establishment of bitcoin foundation, now businesses have a clear target to give pressure on

If you compare with FED, it is independant of government, not even mention business

In today's software industry, the stake holder's opinion is always of high priority, and that is the reason software developers' reward can not justify their talent and amount of working. But the reason for this is that "trickle down" mechanism of today's monetary system

Now bitcoin is another monetary system, there could be totally new ways of organize things, developers could establish their own decision making mechanism, instead of following that "service minded" approach

Yeah maybe they did allow themselves to be stampeded by the ignorant masses into releasing too early?

Then again there seem to have also been runours that "big business[es]" also are applying pressure.

I heard that gox are running 0.7?

That's possible, but likely irrelevent.  MtGox doesn't mine, and if they refuse to forward an oversized block they alone are not significant enough to prevent the propagation of the block.  The only downside is to users of MtGox who might not be able to trade until they fix their stuff.

I still have some question: What kind of loss were generated by this fork and who is going to pay for it?  As stated by BTCGUILD, they lost about 250 coin during the fork, and I think there will be some merchants affected by the invalid confirmation of new chain, how much are they and who is going to compensate for them?

4647  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: March 16, 2013, 04:35:30 AM
Tomorrow the machine will be put on balcony, which is -15 degree for the moment, is there a way to remote login to web interface?

Do you update the firmware while mining? If you stop the cgminer, how can you make sure it will not be activated again by scheduler?
4648  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: 16 Avalon photos on: March 16, 2013, 03:03:21 AM
They should use a modular PSU to get rid of all the excess cables. Very messy.

And why the third different fan? Probably just there to prevent circulation back through the third hole and they use the same front/rear plates.

Hopefully they make improvements for V2. However I don't think they will last much after V3 with the 28nm ASICs due later in the year.

They can keep it backward compatible so that v3 modules fits in the case, the case is really luxury, pure aluminum Grin

Big businesses are just representations of bitcoin users, so they do listen to users

OP's question is a very natural response to the latest incident, I think many people would sooner or later start to worry about a few core devs and a few mining pools push a new version and create a fork and claim that fork is the right choice

But there are limitations:
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Economic_majority

So far, the most popular word is "consensus"
"Those proposing changes should consider that ultimately consent may rest with the consensus of the Bitcoin users"
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Bitcoin_Improvement_Proposals

And there are some prohibited changes
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Prohibited_changes

Consensus is a very vague term, how many people can reach a consensus? 79% or 81%? It is always necessary to discuss the political (decision making) structure of bitcoin, but as it appeared this time, there is an internal decision making process by core devs and a couple of pool operators, works like FOMC meeting. Bitcoin users in this case do not have any choice but follow the core devs' directive, so "consensus" might be just some claim that do not have practical meaning

So follow the FED or follow the core devs, that's the question. Maybe FED is not better than core devs, but core devs must show some expertise when it comes to handling users trust. At least this time they acted professionaly and hold the consistency and integrity of bitcoin, thus gained some reputation, but anyway this showed some uncertainties of bitcoin which has never been revealed before, I think people need time to digest all these, time will tell
4651  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: 16 Avalon photos on: March 16, 2013, 01:54:11 AM
So each larger module is composed of 8 smaller modules?

I really do wonder what Gen 2 will bring. I had thought that the large modules were one solid piece....apparently they break down into even smaller ones....

That backplate holds 8 submodules, but the heatsink size is fixed. I think gen2 will be the same as gen1 for hashing unit, maybe the control unit is upgraded

I just checked Avalon's claim back then: "If the prototype can be made before the end of January, then mass volume production will be guaranteed. If the prototype can not be made before end of January, you will get refund."

So they did follow the schedule, just no time to talk, no tracking email...  All my messages and tickets were ignored, kind of scaring

Hi jonnyj Can you tell me if you where in Batch #1 or Batch #2 and location thx.

batch 1 order 198

I remember that I waited until count down and the ordering website was immediately overloaded by users and crashed, I tried again and again for another 1-2 hour and finally got one order in, just lucky and some patient

I believe Avalon team is working full speed to make the delivery. But it is a tough task for a small team to deliver 900 units in one-two month, include the test
4653  Bitcoin / Hardware / 17 Avalon photos on: March 15, 2013, 11:45:18 PM
After days of communication with custom, finally they released the package and I managed to fetch the Avalon machine before weekend. I planned to order 2 units, but since that batch is so small and order system is crowded, I ordered just one. But now I know that some people ordered 10 or more, seems centralization is the destiny for everything  Tongue

I opened the Avalon before I connected it, took some photos and admired ngzhang's artworks  Cool Cool

Chinese cable and wifi antenna are the only accessories

Well protected packaging

Machine feels solid and heavy

The case is very simple but smartly connected by 6 pieces of 3mm thick aluminum PLATE, the material Avalon used are quite generous, if not unnecessary

To my surprise, the overall finish of the machine, especially PCB board is much better than I expected, it is not only used for mining, it can also be used for decorating Grin Grin Many years ago my first batch of PCB production had much worse layout and components, but still sold for more than 200 dollars each. Consider that Avalon contains 3 large hashing unit and two routing board, many quality components, it worth the dollar spent from a hardware perspective

The protective plast and the IKEA-style conjunction

3 hashunit-v1. On left side of hashing unit, just after the fan, I observed lot's of dirt, it means unit has been thoroughly tested for days

WR703, the usb cable was fixed by the tape

Power routing module, this part and the data routing module on the left are crowded by lot's of wires, difficult to get a clear photo

The heatsink is directly mounted on the bottom plate, so bottom plate also works as part of the heatsink

The special 2x6 power connector and HDD cable, now my HDD cable in closet will have some use again, I think the hashing module can be re-arranged to improve cooling

A memory of PATA hard drive and 2xPCIE graphic card power supply

The backplane

The backplane connects 8 small hashing units together, part of my unit are full of thermal compound

Closely examine all the small hashing units, I can see that most of them have only 2-3 screws attached, I don't know if adding more will improve the cooling

Avalon Project by ngzhang  Grin  Modulized power supply design proved how much power are required by each small unit

Compare to previous popular hashing unit

Now test running,  when the fan speed is relatively low, noise is around 55-60 DB at a 50cm distance. Close the case won't improve the noise performance much, since the case is not isolated. Better open it to improve cooling. Anyway such noise is not suitable for putting in the bedroom

It is very interesting to see how these engineers cleverly utilized many existing PC technologys to reduce the custom design effort and accelerated the final delivery process

Now snow fall attacked Avalon

I get my unit today just in time before the custom closed for weekend  Shocked
Location: Sweden
Order: 198

Will publish some photo later, and I heard that some one in china received at least 10 of them, I guess at least 100 of them is out by now
4656  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Satoshi Dead? on: March 15, 2013, 11:10:55 AM

While economics isn't a particularly difficult subject when taken from the right tack, there is much more going on here.  Unless it's just a huge matter of luck, Satoshi wasn't just some armchair economist who has read Hayak.  He was a true Praxeologist, and that also implies some degree of understanding regarding common psychology.  Which is something that neither the common economist, nor the common cryptologist (with or without a talent for self-taught computer programming) is likely to be able to grasp.  The social & psychological aspects of Praxeology tend to require a completely different learning style/personality type/Myers-Briggs type than those of the analytical reasoning that computer programming & mathmatics demand.  There is exactly one Myers-Briggs type that can manage both perspectives in the same mind without significant cognative dissonance; and that type is both the least common (by far) of any type and the least likely to be a self-motivated individual.  Said another way, a polymath (as rare as they are) is unlikely to also be an innovator.  I concede in advance that it's possible that Satoshi was, in fact, a self-motivated polymath.  I'm just stating that Occum's Razor implies that such a possibility is not the most likely reality.  The need to have 1) the feeler (a psycologist), 2) the analyst (cryptographicly trained coder) and the 3) visionary (the innovator) still implies at least two people and still probably three; thus a triumvirate.

I think economics is the most difficult topic on the planet because it is such a complex society that combines all the existing knowledge of human. So far no one has mastered it, that's the reason human are running into all sorts of economic problem from time to time

Austrian economics is not mainstream because they can not do anything to help when a recession strikes, and people always want to do something to improve during unlucky period, just this simple fact is enough to say that economics have very close relation to politics

4658  Economy / Economics / Swedish government's new crisis strategy on: March 15, 2013, 12:06:03 AM
"Swedish government today made a decision about a new law that is called short-time-work, or so-called crisis contract

The recommendation about short working time means that in a crisis time where the general business condition worsened greatly, people get a temporary lowered salary and lowered working hours, combined with government taking 1/3 of the cost for the involved company

The purpose is to give support to avoid large scale layoff of employee..."

http://www.gp.se/ekonomi/1.1404677-regeringen-beslutar-om-krisavtal

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Currently the swedish jobless rate is 8.5%, and many young people can not find a job. Several of my colleagues have problems with their kids, and they typically send them to other countries like Australia/China after they gradudated from high school

At least the government has realized that mass scale layoff will create a self supported downward spiral. Sweden is a small country and have about 4 million working, the effect is very quick to be felt

I always think that the right solution for today's jobless problem is to continuously reduce working hours,  let's see if sweden can create a first example of full employment through lower working hours  Smiley
4659  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What Keeps You in BTC for the Long Haul? on: March 14, 2013, 09:59:25 PM
I never think that bitcoin will replace fiat currency, it is just another payment method and fits much better for part of people's interest, pirate party even get a seat in EU parliament, the society is taking a change slowly, the borderless virtual economy will outgrow real economy sooner or later

Thinking about future, in a very realistic virtual reality, virtual car sell could possibly pass the sell of the real car, since it has so much configurable options and many of its functionalities are impossible to implement in a real car. So far everything in virtual world is not scarce and can be easily duplicated, that aboundant supply prevented economy shift from physical goods production to virtual goods production, bitcoin is just a great example that if you limited the supply for virtual things, the value can surpass its physical counterpart
4660  Economy / Economics / Re: Wishes and Rainbow on: March 14, 2013, 09:32:51 PM

In fact, I'll just throw out a guess as to what I think some of this booklet means.  The three drops of black "tears" represent the three oil states (Iraq, Iran, Libya) without Rothschild central banks that have to be sacrificed (plowed under, re-born into the light) so that the little people can have more flowers (consumer goods, Keynesian stimulus).  Yet it's still not enough.  People are never satisfied because the stimulus is temporary, like flowers.  The solution to the dilemma is to try to give the little people access to more sunlight (solar energy), but this is a very difficult task for the little people.

Roota distributes the flowers that they do have to the oldest people first.  This represents the bankrupt social welfare programs and the failed "trickle-down" economics paradigm.

"Colorland" is Colorado, the new mountain capital of the US that is currently being disarmed in preparation for the banksters' arrival once they release the final plague in order to kill off most of the population, as predicted in "The Stand".  The little people who live below, in poverty, will try to reach Colorado, to experience some of the wonderful colorful lives of the big important banksters who live there.  But the amount of illumination (renewable energy) that can reach the little people is limited, and the banksters are safely able to step on any of the little people who make it out of their hole and into "Colorland".

"Road to Roota" is probably Roto-Rooter, which has something to do with plumbing and perhaps refers to the source of the aforementioned bio-terror attack.

The title, "Wishes and Rainbows", probably means to "be careful what you wish for", because when you take out too many fiat money loans, then along with your "wishes" (stimulus, consumer spending) you will also get "rainbows" (false flag terror attacks and economic collapse).

Wow, I'm amazed by your analysis, and indeed, I think those black tears are somewhat oil related

IMO, the banks would like to shape people's behavior so that more people will follow the same pattern they prefered, the flower is money, and plant flower is like investment, if people treat money as a scarce resource and chase for it, then banks will easily control the society through their monetary policy
