4641  Economy / Economics / Re: HSBC Bank To Cut 35,000 Jobs, Shed $100 Billion In Assets As Profits Plunge on: February 20, 2020, 10:32:17 PM
I think they've been winding down for a while...

I don't know how Asia are going to do for them either, brics don't look like the best investment for stability but at least we're getting rid of them from our soil...

All most companies seem to do these days (especially banks) are to either have an inner circle of people they give good rates to and charge the rest a really high interest rate that's unreasonable for them to charge in these times... There was a stated rise in decentralised finance and there's no wonder when banks can set personal loans at 20+% and even payday loans are capped at 8 and defi is less than 7 (but can be close to zero)...

I think the euro has lost some trust and stability by sending its interest rates down into the negative so it'll be interesting to see how that recovers but another bank will replace HSBC I don't think anyone was particularly attached to them or cared how well they did...
4642  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Placing coins in storage or setting stop losses? on: February 20, 2020, 07:20:21 PM

Has this ever happened to Binance?

Prevention is better than cure.

Remember with bitfinex lost 33% of its cryptocurrency reserves? It's only done that once, are they still secure?

I see both of those ideologies as being equal, a company shouldn't have the opportunity to lose your funds especially in this space and if they do that's your problem most of the time as per their terms and conditions.
4643  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: February 20, 2020, 06:15:58 PM
It's advisable just to not clock links and remember the official site is ChipMixer.com I think it's hard to get that I on android with the tail but it might be harder to avoid on apple depending on how they do it.

I'm surprised they're even allowed as domain characters, surely someone would've thought that's a problem...?
4644  Economy / Economics / Re: Any Forex Brokers That Accept Crypto? on: February 20, 2020, 05:30:48 PM
Right, so how does the Forex work exactly. Do you all have any experience with that?

What do you mean?

You'd create an account, read the terms, log in and deposit and then start trading?

It'll depend on what platform you use as to whether those funds will be immediately converted into usd or whether they'll be held in btc until you open a trade and then have to convert it first.
4645  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [Need help] What should be done when the transaction fails due to "Out of Gas"? on: February 20, 2020, 04:48:25 PM
A good way to avoid having this 'out of gas' error is to always check the allowable gas at a particular time or the 'safe low'. You can see it on sites like https://www.ethgasstation.info I usually add one or two more gwei to the safe low in case the gas fee suddenly increases while I'm trying to send. Sometimes I would just follow the standard for faster tx confirmation.

Have no idea how ethereum works but I had to use dai and I just use 1 gwei every time I want to send something... Seems to confirm within an hour and I don't care about fast transactions so...
4646  Economy / Speculation / Re: Has anyone tried leveraging hodl positions with bank loans? on: February 20, 2020, 01:31:03 PM
Yeah I'm not saying now, just at some point..
Banks often give uncolaterakised and unbacked ones too.

But, say I put up 1BTC and borrowed £8000 to buy a second then I should easily be able to pay off the loan as long there isn't a huge crash. I saw a daily candle spike upwards by 40%, I don't think downtrend are generally as volatile afaik.
4647  Economy / Economics / Re: Any Forex Brokers That Accept Crypto? on: February 20, 2020, 05:10:05 AM
What country are you in? Therell be a divide between the US and everywhere else.

Etoro are one in Europe for example, they allow conversion and then usage I'm not sure if they allow direct usage and they're one of those companies that'll keep trying to call you until you block their number (or answer them) ...
4648  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Mining IP Addresses on: February 20, 2020, 03:45:06 AM
Thanks for the responses guys!!! So from my understanding miners can be in isolated networks and when they need to add the block to a pool then they will contact with the bitcoin nodes, correct? Thanks again guys!!!!

No the miners and pools are conti uously in contact. Probanly at least every minute if not faster contact to receive "work" and the current block height and transactions.

The pools are generally the ones to publish transactions (in every case other than solomining).

Pools servers are generally hard to break into and normally have a backup. I think they've become intelligent enough to host the stratum protocol and the full nodes on the same server and leave everything else to another server as the Web servers seem to get compromised much more easily. They also probably get backed up by dynamic cloud services like aws or azure.
4649  Economy / Economics / Re: GOLD and BITCOIN: What is their similarities? on: February 20, 2020, 01:10:27 AM
There is a fixed suppply of both on earth - supply with gold is generally based on the rate it is mined but doesn't dramaticlaly change. With bitcoin, we know there will only be 21 million coins under current protocol and the inflation rate will reduce by half every 4 years so it has more predictible inflation rates than gold but both inflation rates are faily slow to change.

Both are valued by people and can be considered as money since both can be broken down into smaller increments of themselves. I think bitcoin goes as low as thimpto btc on the lightning network (or it might be pico it was still pretty small) and if you want your 100g gold bar to be 2 50 g you can exchange it for like in the smaller quantity or melt it down yourself.
4650  Economy / Speculation / Has anyone tried leveraging hodl positions with bank loans? on: February 20, 2020, 12:49:31 AM
I recently came across this idea as it looks like sites like bybit and bitmex charge about $18 a day in "interest" on leveraged positions and if you're able to check the charts every 8 hours or so then could it make more sense to take out a loan in order to leverage your position higher. If you split funds between bitcoin and traditional investments (such as stocks) or made it so your term was long enough to onlly be ~$50-$100 a month, would it be reasonable to use that raather than leverage trading platforms or does it remove the isolation factor too much and mean you might risk more than you could afford to lose?
4651  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Placing coins in storage or setting stop losses? on: February 20, 2020, 12:45:31 AM
How far can a 16 hour candle move? I don't know what the biggest move we've seen is but if we assume that's the longest you'd have to stay away from your funds then we can also assume your funds shouldn't see too much of a crash in this time (i.e time between you sleep or even checking your messages once in the morning and once in the evening - since you can easily set alerts on cointracking apps)...

You can also use multiple apps and most phones retain data connectivity pretty well so if you have coinbase and binance for example then you should get a good idea as to where a coin is at.
4652  Other / Meta / Re: Moving a topic that has already been moved by moderators on: February 20, 2020, 12:21:38 AM
1. After a post is moved by a moderator, the OP shouldn't be allowed to move that topic again. He can only ask moderators to move that if there is a legitimate reason.

It'd be better to just say they can't move it back rather than they can't' move it at all.

Sometimes if I make a topic in development and technical and it gets moved to off-topic or altcoin discussion, I'd rather change that and move it to serious.

Equally, what if I wanted to move a topic to archival? Would I have to request a mods attention in all of these circumstances?
4653  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Yes, the Keepkey is a worthless black bricklet on: February 19, 2020, 11:49:30 PM
I assume that the KeepKey, being based on the same hardware as Trezor, suffers from the same security vulnerability as the Trezor devices (voltage glitching to extract seed)? Huh

That's still not possible to do with a strong enough password, perhaps this video from computerphile may be helpful: https://youtu.be/3NjQ9b3pgIg

Also, I thought they did something to fix the voltage a while ago or was that with ledgers same vulnerability?
4654  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: February 19, 2020, 11:41:46 PM
Wow that's good for namesilo's image, how long did it take them to get back to you?
4655  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: 60 GB folder called "Bitcoin" on: February 19, 2020, 09:00:53 PM
Yeah, that'll be bitcoin core.

You can pick up a copy of it here: https://bitcoin.org/en/bitcoin-core/
4656  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I'm considering becoming a full node on: February 19, 2020, 07:11:06 PM

It rarely happens because there aren't many options to DDoS full nodes. Additionally, Bitcoin Core have mechanism to block peers/nodes who attempt to DDoS by sending invalid information.

You probably don't need to worry about it too much, unless your node is part of public service (e.g. pools, block explorer, exchange, etc.)

I thought you'd ddos the router and not the machine? Unless you can find a port on the same machine thst is more vulnerable to attacks...

Not sure if we've moses on from accelerated denial of service (using timeservera) as that flaw may have been patched or there might have been something more efficient.

I think the reason people aren't using DoS attacks more is because they're not very worthwhile. Especially since most people can get a new ip pretty quickly too or can push their node through a different network.
4657  Other / Meta / Re: Gangs of BitcoinTalk :) on: February 18, 2020, 11:26:45 PM
3. The Thick-Skinned Gang

I think I just need to assure you that this gang doesn't exist...

hm: me, timelord, daveF and jet cash didn't make the cut for any of them... interesting. I think Jetty not being part of one is my doing Grin.

I don't seem to be in any gangs.
We had knowledge socialism but a few of those members left us...

I was going to say that if there is a gang bang, please can I join in, but I'm not sure that we have any girls here any more.
Last time I checked the ratio was 4.9:1
Edit: now 4.6:1
Based on what concerns most of the girls round here, I'm guessing they're all living in asia, don't think I'd even find 1 in 5 girls interested (without suggestion).

Opps, I can't say girls any more. The last girls I referred to as a girl, said I had to refer to females as binaries. I really don't understand this woke stuff.
Tell 'em genders are the inverse of a normal distribution.
A 'V' shape if you will on a graph.

The forum feels much less gang-y than it did back in 2017 or so, or maybe I don't know what the hell I'm talking about.

We survived a bubble burst and a load of spam that was going on around then with a load of newbies... A refined community is a closer one: roll on 2021 Grin.
4658  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I'm considering becoming a full node on: February 18, 2020, 11:07:16 PM
Ya I figured the most would be DDoS. Is getting DDoS'd while running a full node common in the Bitcoin world? I've run private game servers and it's very common in that world  Angry
I have been running a node since a year now.
It never happened to me.
This is my experience.

I think they go after the nodes used for more.. The last DDoS afaik was electrum, so that was specific to nodes hosting their servers.

If you run a node, you're only one in eleven thousand so there's a chance you might not ever be DDoSed (especially if the network keeps growing and you don't stand out much).
4659  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: https://coinminer.com/ page Has anyone bought? on: February 18, 2020, 10:32:17 PM
I found this reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/BitcoinMining/comments/7e7lph/coinminercom_is_a_scam_or_not/

Norton claim there's a virus called coin miner which could just be an unlucky coincidence although since there's a company that makes miners called coinmine it might be likely coinminer is a scam.
4660  Economy / Speculation / Re: Need to be more cautious than ever on: February 18, 2020, 10:23:43 PM
I think we're out of the panic-selling mode for the moment, as bitcoin is once again over $10k (wheee!) but this is where the FOMO might kick in again--and I hate that term, but it's an apt one for times like this.

Anyway, the market and the individuals that make it up are going to do what they're going to do and no amount of warning can prevent either bubbles from forming or the subsequent crashes.

Quite interesting, so you think we're going to plateau (for a while) from here or see a pump upwards before any sort of sells start to happen? A possibility probably all to likely, it's like being back at 6k again or when we hit 10k last time and shot up to 14 before recorrecting.

Isn't it basic already to do those things? For me, I will let them deal with what they think is right, for them to see the actual result of what they did, win or loss, regret or not, disappointment or not, etc.

Without those mistakes, people will never be used to it.
There's a lot of hype already in the space in a lot of places, so it's best to forewarn people before they go making the same mistakes that have been made by many in the past. Even experience traders can fall back into a trap of going after profits and risking it all rather than reevaluating where they are...
