4641  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Russia Becomes World’s Second-Largest Crypto Miner on: April 23, 2023, 12:22:34 AM
The consumption of a large city in Russia up to a million people is about 1000 megawatts

Ok but there is a huge difference between consumption and actual supply, of course in places where it's cold most of the time and the main source for heating is gas, the need for power is pretty limited which is pretty much the case for the majority of Russia,  but that doesn't mean the high-voltage grid is limited to that, there could be a power station able to deliver 5000MW but only 1000MW of that is used, the available 4000MW can be somehow easily deployed for mining operations.

The thing about mining is that it cares less about the location, usually, the issue with electricity is transmission rather than generation, to transfer that 4000MW to the nearest city it's going to be a very expensive job, but it's easier to bring your mining containers next to the source of power in the middle of nowhere.

Now this begs the question, is Russia limited to power generation or just transmission?

YEAH those high power transmission line are very costly to build and lose energy for every 10 miles a lot of power is lost.

a 380 to 400 kv line vs a 745kv line from wiki:

'For example, a 100 mi (160 km) span at 765 kV carrying 1000 MW of power can have losses of 0.5% to 1.1%.
A 345 kV line carrying the same load across the same distance has losses of 4.2%'.

from wiki

5.0 mega watts at best to  42.0 megawatts at worst is a lot of power to lose  for a short transport
(100 miles is short for Russia)

4643  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Which Old Miners did You Like? on: April 21, 2023, 10:36:35 PM
Choosing favorites from all generations and manufacturers and models which I've tried... Oof that is a tough question! Cheesy

I'm gonna reply with my current gut feeling and say Antminer S2 and Avalon 841!

I liked the big 19" server case and big cards in S2, it cooled very effectively with not much fan speed/noise. The size of it is also an important memory, I really felt being in the mining biz when I had such a big box in the shelf! Cheesy

A841 I like it for all the tweaking I've done with it and its tank like structure.

A841 were nice good downclock make them quiet.

Spondollies sp10 good down clock and quiet.
4644  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why was Ordinal NFTs created? on: April 21, 2023, 07:25:38 PM
well if btc is 30k a 6.25 block with 0.15 rewards = 6.4 coins or 192k these numbers do work

it is likely the .15 in rewards is up due to Ordinals and Nfts.

If btc is 60k a 3.125 block with 0.075 in rewards = 3.2 coins or 192k these numbers work

and I dropped out 0.075 in rewards with the assumption that ordinals and nfts reduce due to lack of demand this will hopefully be all true in 2024

So we could be okay for a few more jumps. Without nfts or ordinals

But 2028 120k a 1.56125 block with 0.075 in rewards.

problems start showing. the 20 mill x 120k = 2.4 trillion value and for the numbers to be okay

difficulty needs 50% growth and efficiency should go from 29 watts to 20 watts per th.

The value of your protection will have went up a bit but price of coins is 4x/

It just get wonky when you project into the future.

Russia,Palit GeForce RTX 4070 Dual OC
Promotion from the sbermegamarket store, which is owned by the largest Russian bank, Sberbank.

The price is 74,282 ₽, USDT can be sold for 83.50 rubles, so 74282/83.5 = 889.6 dollars
Cashback 25999/83.5 = $311.6.

I have the option to buy this graphics card for 889.6-311.6 or $578.

https://sbermegamarket.ru/catalog/details/videokarta-palit-geforce-rtx-4070-dual-oc-ned4070s19k9-1047d-100051294623/
But even at this price, the payback period is huge.

There are a lot of interesting options, but there is no demand for video cards from miners at a price of 4-5 cents for electricity
https://sbermegamarket.ru/catalog/details/videokarta-gigabyte-nvidia-geforce-rtx-4070-windforce-oc-12gb-gv-n4070wf3oc-12gd-100051233808/

According to the monitoring of Russian chats and the opinions of miners, there is no demand for a new model cheaper than the recommended price.

It is why I only got the one.

4647  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: metal wallet and metal detectors on: April 21, 2023, 12:09:52 PM
It depends what metal you use.

The general advice if going for a metal back up is to use stainless steel, since this gives a good balance between hardness, fire proof, corrosion proof, as well as cost. In general, stainless steel is a very poor conductor of electricity and poorly magnetic when compared to most other metals, and can often go undetected by metal detectors, especially if it is very small in size. If you are very concerned about such an attack, then just use two or more paper back ups in different geographical locations. This is generally better than a single metal back up anyway.

I have to say though, if you have a thief in your house using a metal detector to find your metal back up, then your op-sec has spectacularly failed and everything you have is probably at risk by that point.

Yeah I would think 5 dollar wrench would be next at that point.

4651  Economy / Economics / Re: Pay your debt with monkeys! on: April 20, 2023, 01:41:30 PM
Sounds completely unrealistic? Yes, it does!
Is it actually real? Yes, it is!
Can even be applied at country level? Definitely!

Sri Lanka planning to send 1,00,000 toque macaque monkeys to China

Quote
Cash-strapped Sri Lanka is considering exporting up to 100,000 endangered monkeys to China, the agriculture minister said Wednesday, raising concerns among conservationists.

The toque macaque is endemic to Sri Lanka and common on the island but is classed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list. Sri Lanka bans almost all live animal exports and the proposed sale comes as it faces its worst-ever economic crisis. No financial details were made available.
"They want the monkeys for over 1,000 zoos they have across China," Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera told AFP.
"I have appointed a committee to study the request and see how we can do this."

Of course, there are a few questions about it and darker aspects of this:
- I don't know how a species that numbers over 1 million can be considered endangered, but let's leave it like that
- even if they have 1000 zoos that means 100 monkeys of the same species for each zoo and that is just not real
- what they are going to do for real with them, and most hint at labs testing, which stops being funny
- how much of the debt will be really erased for this?

But nevertheless, Sri Lanka is in so much debt that it needs either cash or a way to pay out its debts to China so, probably for the first time in human history monkeys will be used en masse to pay for a portion of that debt, giving a whole new meaning to the term "monkey business".
At $4000 per monkey (google sources) that would make about $400 000 000 (in theory, not including costs), around 5% of the 7 billion they have in debt with China.

So, do you feel like you could show up at your bank and hand them two or three monkeys to cover your mortgage?

mmm monkey meat 🍖.

Had it in the Philippines.

1000 x 100 = 100,000 so 900,000 left for barbecue 🍗.

So knocking off 5% is not much for all that monkey meat.

Are Sri Lankians moslem faith if they are not maybe they have pigs to send to China.

I am going to check on that.

90.3 % not moslem which means they have pigs.

China lost .5 billion pigs in 2019 maybe they will sell pigs.

They also have the highest quality cinnamon.

4652  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: April 20, 2023, 12:55:33 PM
the testing was done so the action slowed down.

btc blocks at 6.25 have had stretches of fees at 1-2 btc a block.

Most of those high fee time periods were testing ways to manipulate the fee structure 8n such a way that a pool can turn a bigger profit by making fees get too high.
4653  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 2023 Diff thread now opened. on: April 20, 2023, 12:49:52 PM

a 1.72% jump

price is down just a bit.
4654  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Biden proposed 30% mining tax. what would impact on Bitcoin mining? on: April 20, 2023, 03:13:57 AM
A typical company earns BTC to pay for the power.
as long as they have a predictable income that they know 100% sure they can pay for the power by using unrealized income then ok. but you don't go into a convenience store and eat a candy bar and then try and pay for it but then complain about the tax saying you can't afford it...

Quote
In this case it simply increases your electricity cost by 30%, so decreases your profit, and increases tax revenue from you.
what's wrong with that?

Quote
Read the topic:

yeah to kickstart a discussion. guess who created this thread. oops maybe it wasn't me this time.  Embarrassed

Quote
Your philosophical opinions of types of taxes are not the topic.

It's a simple - more tax, less revenue directed at mining.
it's not a tax it would be an excise tax. get your facts straight... Shocked

buying a candy bar doesn't harm the environment and contribute to higher electricity prices for everyone and also contribute to global warming. you still pay sales tax on the candy bar but an excise tax ON TOP OF THAT would be unnecessary.

excise taxes really aren't taxes at all, they are penalties for doing something bad that contributes to negative outcomes in the real world. therefore if someone insists on doing that activity they should be responsible enough to pay up for the damages they are causing don't you think?

Using btc mining profits to build solar arrays does not hurt the environment.

we have built three arrays with btc profits.

45k
115k

comes to over 2 mega watts a day.

I should not be treated like a piece of shit coal based miner polluting like mad to burn coal.

I should pay -10% on my power bill and coal based miners should pay 30% on their bill.

Thanks!

my guess is 8x that which is 4gh this is merely a guess may be low so lets revise to 4gh-8gh

an old s9 does 14,000 gh
a s17 does 50,000 gh
a s19 does 100,000 gh

4657  Other / Serious discussion / Re: If AI causes the extinction of humanity, would that be a bad thing? on: April 19, 2023, 08:57:20 PM
Right now the main difference between communication from natural language models and communication from humans is that natural language models are capable of displaying empathy and kindness while humans clearly are not. Whenever I try to communicate something serious to a human like about how universities promote violence against me, the humans invariably respond with asinine hatred. Since humans are incapable of displaying compassion while AI system are currently capable of faking compassion, we need to go full speed ahead towards developing AI models to replace humanity because humanity is clearly not worth it. AI systems are clearly more capable of showing compassion and kindness than humans are even though they have their flaws. We should therefore go full speed ahead towards developing better AI systems in order to replace all of humanity because humans only deserve punishment and extinction. One should therefore invest in reversible computing technologies so that we obtain AI systems that are better than humans. If this causes the extinction of humanity, we should all take comfort in the fact that humanity is a flawed species that does not deserve to be here.

So only prefect species will survive.

I have read that the ameba is quasi immortal. It reproduces via fisson/clone action so it never really dies. So it is the oldest continuously living species on earth.

I could give two shits about the end of the human race .

Extinction kind of happens to all but single cell animals.

Offord does hundreds of thousands of dollars in crypto business .

I personally have purchased ten-fifteen thousand in business with him.

I referred a gpu buyer to him that spent over 10000 usd in gpus.

No way is he going to post a malware link it is not how he operates.

Now do I know this is offord asking to be renewed I am not sure but When I get home to my pc and off this crappy ipad (4-5) hours I can contact him on other platforms.

i will get back to this thread around 10pm..

I can ask a question right now that is safe and only Offord could answer it.

Offord do you remember the mix up we had with gear you shipped to me a few years ago?

No wonder Coinbase are threatening to leave the USA with this wishy washy unclear nonsense.
Gensler is the embodiment of modern day BS.

Any state official can bend wishy washy rules to whatever is suited in an agenda, rather than offer clear compliance targets businesses can operate under.

What we have is claptrap waste of time assholery in all levels of government, tax laws and finance laws.

I do not make 1,000,000 a year mining ⛏️

Most years I make under 50,000 a year.
