4701  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is the collateral behind Bitcoin? on: July 20, 2018, 01:30:46 PM
Why do you guys keep trotting out rehashed versions of the misinformation that has been posted dozens of times in this thread.

Here is the Oxford dictionary definition of collateral
Quote
Something pledged as security for repayment of a loan, to be forfeited in the event of a default.

It is little wonder that you don't get any merits for your posts.
4702  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: High quality posts? on: July 20, 2018, 01:18:10 PM
Here is a list of the posts that I have awarded with merits, and those of mine that have received merit. I'm grateful to LoyceV for creating this list, and he will be providing another list for the latest month's posts.

4703  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: UK Writer Beaten to a BLOODY PULP With Hours of Releasing Pro-Trump Piece on: July 20, 2018, 11:43:19 AM
>..<

There is so much in your post with which I can't agree.

Countries don't create currencies, they borrow the 'money' from the cental banks who create it.

The UK government has been starving the country of capital by selling the national assets and giving the money to the EU and other contries.

Giving Amazon preferrential treatment destroys commerce and also creates the export of capital

Fractional reserve banking and zero interest rates are another way to steal savings and export the money to the international bankers.

I could go on for another couple of pages.

There is a video about the latest Tommy Robinson developments here -

I won't even start about the latest Novichok rubbish about Russian involvement. I think all the world knows it came from Porton Down now
4705  Other / Meta / Re: Negative trust everywhere on: July 20, 2018, 11:07:51 AM
You have to differentiate between retaliatory red trust, and a deserved red trust. It's moved on from a simple trading rating, and it has become more of an indication of low moral fibre. Selling or buying merits is an indication of a weak character in my opinion, and so is account trading.
4706  Other / Meta / Re: LoyceV's Merit data analysis on: July 20, 2018, 11:02:44 AM
That's really useful. I haven't been through the post for which I received merit. I got the humpbecause I thought my ILIAS academy suggestion was being ignored, but I see that I got a merit for it. Maybe I should do some work on it.

It's quite difficult to stay motivated when all you see is negativity.
4707  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: July 20, 2018, 10:55:14 AM
I want to ask, time to update merit is how many days?

If you are talking about merit sources, then it's 30 days. If I award 20 sMerits today, then I get them back in 30 days. If I can't find any decent posts, because it takes too long to weed through all the rubbish, and I don't award any merit, then the replacement is delayed, and the good members lose out. The spam bots and TwitBook spammers don't seem to realise that they are actually slowing down the generation of new sMerits that could be awarded to the decent responsible members here.
4708  Other / Meta / Re: LoyceV's Merit data analysis on: July 20, 2018, 10:43:46 AM
Is it easy for me to get a list of posts that I've merited, and for which I've received merit. My current list only goes as far as June 8th.
4709  Other / Meta / Re: Suggestions to improve bitcointalk.org on: July 20, 2018, 08:00:52 AM
Most of the suggestions are laudable, but they don't address the root problems. These are lack of moderation, and misdirected moderation, and also the way bot and new alts are allowed to pollute the main boards. Much as it goes against published policy, the forum is going to have to limit new members ability to pollute the boards. Failure to do this will result in the loss of more moderators and decent posters.

I am having extreme difficulty in understanding the moderation policy here. I have had threads locked or moved, and posts deleted, and in most cases, they were attempts to raise the quality of the general boards, or to help members improve their English. At the same time bounty, Twitbook, ICOs and other low grade projects are promoted on many of the boards. It's getting to the stage where one is almost embarrassed to admit that one is an active member of Bitcoin Talk. For example, I fail to understand the locking of my thread about threads to improve the perceived quality of the beginners board, and to encourage new members  to research more about Bitcoin.
4710  Other / Meta / Re: It's a struggle getting newbies to comment in basic information threads. on: July 19, 2018, 05:59:43 PM
It's fairly basic if you are considering running a node. I hoped that I could get some of them to look up the answer in Google so that they can learn a bit about Bitcoin.

A couple of the other threads that I started received a couple of replies early on that were reasonably good, and then they seem to get a load of following replies that are just rehashes of the previous ones. I guess that confirms your comment.
4711  Other / Meta / It's a struggle getting newbies to comment in basic information threads. on: July 19, 2018, 05:48:01 PM
It took nine hours to get a reply to this thread about the Bitcoin port.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4704127.0

I thought that the thread was too simple, but obviously not. It makes me wonder if it is worth trying to upgrade that board.

Actually, it really annoys me, especially as they are constantly whining about how they can't get any merits.
4712  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Germany added bitcoin as a legal tender! on: July 19, 2018, 01:16:32 PM
I don't see how any country can rule that Bitcoin is legal tender. Legal tender means that it can be used in settlement of a debt, and, as not everybody is capable of accepting Bitcoin, I don't see how any government can create a legal obligation to accept it.

We, the Filipino people are waiting.

I noticed that change of spelling. I'm a bit traditional - when did the spelling change?
4714  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is the collateral behind Bitcoin? on: July 19, 2018, 11:36:41 AM
By 'collateral' I assume you mean 'underlying asset value', and Bitcoin is interesting in that the asset value is virtual, and based on the solution of a complex mathematical calculation. This proof of work requirement prevents indiscrimate creation of Bitcoins, and is in sharp contrast to fiat currencies which have no underlying asset values and no limits on their creation, and are essentially worthless as a result. The asset value of Bitcoin is based on scarcity and demand, and is comparable to gold and silver. Another interesting class of virtual assets is Internet domain names.
4715  Other / Meta / Re: Suggestions to improve bitcointalk.org on: July 19, 2018, 11:02:35 AM
I agree with most of your suggestions. However, I don't agree that we should penalise responsible members because their first language is not English. Please note the use of the word "responsible", merit abuse on any boards should be penalised.
4716  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Tips] Posting technique on: July 19, 2018, 09:50:44 AM

Also, an easy way to adjust image size is to add width=××× after the first "img" in the tag in the code,

This still results in the full image being downloaded. An alternative way to reduce the displayed image size is to resize it using free software like  Irfanview - this is a great help to members viewing the boards with a mobile device. Even better is to link to the image, rather tham embedding it.
4717  Other / Beginners & Help / [for merit] Talk about the Bitcoin port on: July 19, 2018, 08:11:30 AM
Tell us about the Bitcoin port, and why the number is higher than 1,000. Explain the difference between inbound and outbound connections.
4718  Other / Meta / Re: How do you feel about the zoo ? Is is shill training or alt breeding ? on: July 19, 2018, 08:00:55 AM
I think the poor captive animals posting in there should be released back into the wild, and the gates should be locked behind them.
4719  Other / Meta / Re: why was i banned.... on: July 18, 2018, 06:14:57 PM
I wouldn't bother with a bounty for a paltry 10 dollars. Does that mean that I am a loser?
4720  Other / Meta / Re: Question about forum rule number 3: No trolling on: July 18, 2018, 04:17:46 PM
I've had digaran on ignore for quite a while now, but he does seem to generate some interesting discussions. I've taken him off ignore in case I'm missing something. Smiley
