4741  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will Bitcoin Correct to $6,500? on: February 03, 2020, 08:25:54 PM
To me a drop to $6500 isn't really that far... From $9k to $6k, sure its a considerable drop but would you be happy to sell now and have it go to $15k? You're going to have to work out where you'd buyback if we swing up? (potentislly around the 11k area) and what if you still have these thoughts then? Are you going to risk holding everything to have to buy back at 15k or 20k? (if we make it thst far).
4742  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How can i create a bot for trading bitcoin? on: February 03, 2020, 08:23:06 PM
Do you know any programming languages?

Any standard language would be good to know, I guess most people use python because it's a lot easier to deal with.

Just look at the api docs and try to test requests from that. As a warning, a lot of trading bots don't do so well unless you have a good strategy.
4743  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why exactly 21000000 BTC on: February 03, 2020, 05:22:38 PM
I think the whitepaper suggests that if 1 Satoshi was 1 cent then there'd be enough to cover the currency market in general and allow for a stable liquidity of assets.... I think he must've just like the number though personally...
4744  Other / Ivory Tower / I needed help understanding what trans people feel.... on: February 02, 2020, 11:34:59 PM
I can move with the times and accept the necessity of gender being a thing. Some interesting points on surgery and other negatives wee mentioned though which might be interesting.

Just going to add a trigger warning for suicide in the content that follows beyond my post if anyone needed one.

I was going to go to mainstream. Social. Media with this but I'd probably just end up getting labelled as a transphobe so I'm wondering if anyone can help me here.

I have quite a few issues with the idea of having lgbtqa+ people and trans people as a separated group as I don't think it does anything to help anyone with the divides... It just seems to separate the two communities as I see it and a lot of non cis people (especially on social media) don't seem to like cis people (or at least its how they come across).

The idea of transgender people for sets out a bit of a problem in the fact that it either forces people to come out as a different gender than what they want to be because they might think they seem more like that gender. We're also taking things far too scientific, it's not like there's only one version of X and one version of Y - there are many different versions of both chromosome types so gender in the way a lot of people view it should be more fluid and thus pronouns to me should link to biological sex instead...

But can anyone explain to me why people would want to assign themselves a different gender and what they'd aim to achieve from that?

4745  Other / Off-topic / Re: Don't forget to backup your computers. on: February 02, 2020, 09:00:40 PM
Why are you so awful at limbo? You should have countless years of practice by now 🤣

I only normally back up the important stuff but I'm wondering why a lot of the time...

I bought 2x8tb backup drives and 1x5tb one and my laptops normally have between 1tb and 500gb on them so I gcoulf theoretically keep doing full backups but you often get into issues with system failures from it (when things don't correspond to being the appropriate size).

There's the additional thing of, if you have a hard drive, you're supposed to rewrite everything back to it every 3 years before it gets too demsgnetised to function and I doubt many people do that...

If you're bad at backing up data, try booting from a Linux image file the next time you start trying to use your computer and see how well you do at remember g the important documents you need...

Where there's a blame there's a claim... You're lucky the cleaner didn't trip over that!
4746  Economy / Economics / Re: agriculture and bitcoin on: February 02, 2020, 01:14:37 AM
You're going to have to be more consice than that? What does your country do well at? What do they need cryptocurrency for?

If they have land but no currency, crypto can probably help.
if they don't have much then crypto might be able to do something if you invest in it but without knowing what you're after or the state your country's in, we can't really offer anything.
4747  Economy / Lending / Re: Free lightning tests on: February 01, 2020, 11:30:31 PM
I think it either wouldn't go through or would find a different route. Negative balances can't be enforced or stored on the LN on a CT since the bitcoin network doesn't support signed integers. (balance is in Satoshi as an unsigned 64bit amount).
4748  Economy / Lending / Re: Free lightning tests on: February 01, 2020, 06:41:16 PM
I managed to get a free transaction on eclair so boom!

I'm not entirely sure why either it wss just a 1000 sat payment to tl.

4751  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Import Dumpfiles on: January 31, 2020, 07:32:17 PM
Are you trying to import the wallet file through RPC?

Can you try to deleteRENAME the old wallet file(Note delete this if no bitcoins under this wallet) from your new wallet(Virgin instance) and then manually put the wallet file from old instance directly to %APPDATA%\Bitcoin of your new instance.

Then update here if it works or not.

RENAME the old wallet file to wallet-bak.dat just so you don't make a mistake.
4752  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Import Dumpfiles on: January 31, 2020, 07:00:05 PM
Afaik, when you prune the chainstate isn't stored so it will make it a lot harder to import a wallet, and I don't think you'll be able to do it without reindexing (and you might have to:
• disable pruning
• run reindex (probably done automatically with disabling pruning)
• import the wallets (preferably online)
• wait for the sync to happen (the days or weeks it takes) in order to store your new transactions for the wallet)
4753  Other / Meta / Re: your official social media accounts on: January 31, 2020, 06:47:53 PM
Yeah it's the official forum account. It's normally used just to report security breaches and ddos attacks to the community.

It's your choice whether you follow it or not, it's not necessary.
4754  Economy / Lending / Re: Free lightning tests on: January 31, 2020, 06:34:00 PM
Sent! @tl can you give me a period you'll be avaliable. I should be avaliable from 0900-2300utc, if you can bump this within that time tomorrow it'd be appreciated.
4755  Economy / Economics / Re: On market capitalization (again) on: January 31, 2020, 03:36:24 PM
Another real world case: We all hail Jeff Bezos to be the richest person on Earth. However, his wealth is measured on the basis of 16% Amazon shares he's holding. Amazon currently worth $1004B but can Jeff realizes all his wealth in liquid form i.e. cash or bank account? Absolutely not! In fact, if he even tries to sell his 16% shares, whole Amazon's market cap will collapse.

Actually yeah I get this.

When old companies were incorporated, they haded out certificates to people to say how much of the shares they hold.
If you lose your certificate and the agent files your transfer wrong then your shares may be lost in a similar way to when bitcoin are lost (for a badly managed share management scheme).

Surely this is the same with lost bitcoin; even if coins are lost, we can assume their all liquid. Those coins lost on a hard drive to landfill may be recovered again if something valuable is found under the landfill or it's carried away by something...
4756  Economy / Lending / Re: Lightning Network Lenders' (and borrowers) discussion thread. on: January 31, 2020, 11:13:32 AM
Yeah, if you're not assigned your own channel then it is possible they just have a few % on the ln.

But if they get a lot of use then they'll need someone monitoring the refills and it might take a while to get your funds though.

But it's generally the same with exchanges anyway.
4757  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: ethbulk.com wallet is safe? on: January 30, 2020, 10:02:10 PM
If you're just after addresses you can use this: https://iancoleman.io/bip39/

In conjunction with mew or coinomi or just on its own.
4758  Other / Meta / Re: Funny bug on: January 30, 2020, 08:27:57 PM
These look like copies of older user accounts. Possibly created as a result of name changes - to prevent the old name from being hijacked. Never mind, read this:

They should've done that for the name change system as it is/was extremely buggy. I kept having to send pms twice when people changed their username in the hope one got through because the name selection tool on the messaging system was returning a different name (they still replied though so it got through).
4759  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Some info on Crypto taxes and capital gains on: January 30, 2020, 07:45:48 PM
For the UK it's mainly stocks and forex that are treated as capital gains. Cars and real estate are exempt and come under their own thing entirely (much like how dividends are treated afaik).

Forex for me includes anything like gold, crypto and actual currency trades, could probably call them commodities contracts.

It's on you to check whether you can operate in relative impunity or whether you're crapping all over your local rules. They're not going to care that you didn't realise.

Some places operating in ignorance is fine. In others you could be building up a whole load of future pain without realising.

Yeah I wouldn't care to calculate how much the difference is when I earn something in crypto and buy something (I don't have to declare it anyway since it'll definitely be less than the £1000 threshold here).

A lot of the time if you file something wrong, you'll normally just get a fine to the tune of that amount to pay but fines add up and interest is added too.

Yeah it's pretty interesting the thorium stuff. If I remember rightly that's the one that melts the valve if it goes unstable/too hot and the thorium is safely stored in a bunker.

🤣 We can't all be as popular as Welsh it seems, what a flex!
