4761  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A question to all speculators - What if Bitcoins' price just flatline? on: June 24, 2011, 05:12:24 PM
The only way they can flatline is if bitcoin stop growing and stay as it is now.

Since bitcoin now is a very small system if it stop growing then well... it's because it just died...
4762  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: CPU Mining with the best of them on: June 24, 2011, 04:57:16 PM
Okay, answers to your questions:

1. Use GUIMiner with Ufasoft's SSE2 CPU miner, get it here.

2. Solo mining will get you nowhere. You'll need to mine in a pool, like Deepbit.

3. As for parallelism, I would just run one worker per computer, Ufasoft's miner scales nicely on multiple cores.
I quote him

From everything I've read thus far, pool mining isn't always the best way. It sounds like if you can attain a certain amount of mHashes/s (5000?), that would be good enough for solo/private pooling. Is this a correct assumption?
Well it's more like, if you really have a LOT of hashing power then there is not a big difference but being in a pool don't give you disadvantages, except a fee if you join a pool with a fee

4764  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Total network processing power on: June 24, 2011, 04:42:41 PM
As Binary said, i suppose bitcoinwatch just checked how much mhash a video card do and checked his TFLOPs.

A 5830 make 1.79TFLOPs and make like 300Mhash if properly clocked, so you can suppose every 300mhash there are 1.79TFLOPs...

Guess who has all their money in Gold?

Aside from being a pretty and maleable metal, I do not understand why Gold is valued any more highly than Bitcoins aside from the history of trading. Gold is no more 'backed' than Bitcoins, you can't eat either at the end of the day.

Imagine your DR Who from the TV show with a time machine.  You can go back anytime you want in 4,000 years but you don't know which year.  What do you bring as a currency to trade?
What about aluminium?  Grin
4773  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: mining on slightly older mac on: June 24, 2011, 10:31:35 AM
It's too ooooold. GPU can't mine and about the CPU well... it's a loss of time...

but you can still try, for fun of course, to make some bitcoin cents

Well, I’m not surprised the U.S. government should take such action.
