What does the word "skin" refer to in this context?
Poker sites that share a common backend/network and player pool, but that are operated by independent entities which each provide their own interface/look/bonus programs etc. I would guess the term "skin" comes from the different look each site has despite the common guts as it were. Thanks. My vote would be in the 'other' category. I like poker and gambling but wouldn't do it online because I wouldn't trust any of them... ( there are no open source poker sites are there? ) I might try out something like Dragon's Tale, only because you don't have to bring in your own btc and can use it as a way of getting free coins, which you can use to play with there, or withdraw.

I think there is a lot greater potential with bitcoin to keep governments from being able to fund wars.
Yes it is always a problem that when you give people greater freedom that "bad" people will be able to do "bad" things easier. But that is never an excuse to deny basic freedoms to everyone.

Down with deepbit! I will be PM spamming anyone with deepbit sigs I see and I urge everyone to do the same.
Ya, spamming always helps to bring people to your way of thinking... especially when you do it in such a calm and non-arrogant manner as you have shown... lol one man should not have ultimate control over the direction of Bitcoin. oh the irony... Death to all fanatics!

don't completely knock the imperial system (or other similar ones;) its emergence made sense...
Yup, as much as any fiat * makes sense. * an arbitrary decree or pronouncement, especially by a person or group of persons having absolute authority to enforce it: The king ruled by fiat. "From henceforth this official unit of measure - which we shall call the rudebit - shall have the same length as this part of my body."

Namecoin needs a big name integration to make it relevant... Firefox, Tor, something of that nature...
If some of these things like SOPA get pushed through then NMC might become a lot more popular, causing more effort to be put into developing the tech involved with using it easily and effectively.

Perhaps appealing to accountants of the rich is even better than targeting the rich, but I think it is naive to think that the rich don't care about managing their own money. You don't get there without knowing how to manage your wealth, and just handing the reigns over to someone to do it all for you is not an option. You get an account to as an adviser and person who fills in your paper work for you, but you still have to know the gist of the game.
I didn't say they don't care at all but tried the make the point they don't care as much, as say someone whose life might actually change if they lost or gained a lot of money. I am talking about those who have already 'gotten there' and don't have to bother with the small matters of money management etc. Warren Buffet was mentioned as admitting to not paying much in taxes... he also admitted he wouldn't mind paying a lot more taxes... he also pledged most of his wealth to the Bill Gates foundation. It seems not uncommon that when you start getting into elite ultra rich levels you are more concerned with how to give it away than with how to make and keep more of it... and if you get your name on a hospital or some other big building who cares if a few or more coins fall through the cracks. I have read stats from people who study these kinda things which bear these opinions out but I don't really care that much to try and dig it up just to try and win an argument here. I think it is naive to think that bitcoin would have very much interest to the richest and most elite... but feel free to go and try and convert all your ultra rich buddies. Let us know how well you do. Like someone else has expressed, I just think that there are better groups to target.

The richest and most elite don't deal with money themselves. They have people for that. When they go places everything is usually bought for them or else they wouldn't deign to show up. They are beyond needing to show off. Power and control is more important... sure money is a part of achieving that but they have 'been there done that' and not something they have much to do with directly anymore. Those you are thinking of, no doubt, the ones you want to target, are the rich and elite wanna-be's... the upper middle class mostly. Those who care a lot about money and want to use it to show that they are among the best of the best.

...David Chaum's digital cash uses the building blocks of cryptography in an intriguing fashion to create a system with the following characteristics. Alice purchases digital "coins" from her bank - as with coins and notes, in a variety of denominations according to her likely spending. Each "coin" is a few hundred bytes or so of information, which she keeps in her computer(s) and/or on a floppy disk or a smart card designed for digital cash operations. There is no reason why she cannot make multiple copies of these coins - but she must be careful to spend each coin only once... - http://mailman.anu.edu.au/pipermail/link/1998-November/035933.htmlInteresting, but that's in 1998. Anything more recent? The year it declared bankruptcy. No, interesting is all.

Was trying to figure out why my 5970 hashrate dropped from ~700 to closer to ~600mhash. Then I read this thread and realized that I had updated to the 11.12 drivers. Guess it's time to downgrade back to 11.11, thanks Did downgrading back to 11.11 work for you? It didn't for me. I went from ~440 to ~420 so I uninstalled catalyst 11.12 and reinstalled 11.11 and I am still at ~420 mhash/sec. Hmm... You need to reinstall SDK 2.5. By default AMD doesn't downgrade SDK. It is the SDK 2.6 (included in 11.12 or later) which reduces performance. If you search the forum you will find steps to manually replace SDK 2.6 w/ SDK 2.5 or earlier. Thanks. The solution offered at this link worked for me: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=54693.msg651989#msg651989

new untested substances can be very dangerous and harmful to health...
and more importantly, harmful to Big Pharma's ability to make Big profits... long existing and extensively tested substances, that anyone can grow themselves etc., are also a danger in that regard. Please people don't do anything that your Government doesn't want you to do. They have shown time and time again how much they have your best interests in mind. I am still waiting to hear from them on whether it is safe for me to use Bitcoin.

Instead of making this you should be putting all your effort into supporting Open Transactions, it already is a layer on top of bitcoin that can do everything you want, plus a whole lot more. And it is already at least 50% done! (It does need alot of ease of use improvements still) ... Once again, I urge you to scrap the idea, and do whatever you can for Open Transactions. All of the info is on his github wiki I think https://github.com/FellowTraveler/Open-Transactions/wiki+1 I wish more people would learn about OT before trying to bring forward their ideas of what needs to be changed to improve Bitcoin etc.

if SOPA goes into effect, who do you think in terms of censorship will be government's targets, who will they shutdown on premises of SOPA?
Anyone and anything they don't like. Tomorrow it might be all sites related to Bitcoin. And they won't need to justify it to anyone or need any court approval... just like with America's assassinations through the use of drones. You may agree with your government today but what about the next one which comes to power in the traditional ways governments come to power ( more often than not having little to do with anything like democracy )? If we could trust entities like this we wouldn't need things like Bitcoin.

not sure how poutine would work in a buffet
The fries, gravy, and cheese curds are kept separate to keep things from getting too soggy/melty and allows each person to adjust the proportions just the way they like it. Bitcoin 100: Odd! I'm eating a bagel with liver sausage as I read this post. Are you spying on me, Portnoy? No, but I am guessing it is one of those ubiquitous, but inferior, New York style bagels. For those who think a bagel is a bagel is a bagel.

Will there be poutine? Montreal style bagels? *drool*

Do I smell a Canadian Bitcoin Convention (CBC2012) in the works? What I've surmised from this thread is that Canada is a great country with wonderful people, people who are willing and able to embrace the internet world we now live in. Bitcoin is a logical extension of that realm.
CBC2012? Hmm... maybe we can invite Amanda Lang*; I really like her. I am not sure what she thinks of Bitcoin, if she even knows about it yet, but she is a great business journalist who is very smart, fair and with a great way with people. She would be more than welcome if it were up to me... as long as that Kevin O'Leary* creep ( the Canadian version of Gordon Gekko ) doesn't tag along. But I think we would need a better name. CBC* already stands for something long established in the psyches of Canadians... even though our neo-con dictator is trying to kill it. --- * The Lang & O'Leary Exchange
