4781  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: mcx passwords on: August 18, 2013, 05:08:21 PM
Actually CIYAM Open is a 100% C++ platform (and I would be interested to perhaps compare notes then).

I only store hashed passwords in the DB and don't really understand why you are not doing the same - the *reset* issue is really not the same thing as you can always send a new password (or a unique link for the email recipient) to accomplish this.

Why exactly do you think you should be able to decrypt your users passwords?
4782  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: mcx passwords on: August 18, 2013, 02:31:29 PM
Any system that encrypts rather than securely hashes account passwords is just asking for trouble (using reversible encryption for things like email addresses makes perfect sense but not for account passwords).

Unfortunately even today many ISP's still even do this (I have had low-level support staff read my password to me over the phone only several years ago).
4783  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Implementation of colored coins? on: August 18, 2013, 02:11:26 PM
I believe the project has progressed quite a bit but probably best to check with "killerstorm" about the details (although I don't think that support for it will be appearing in an official version of the Satoshi client any time soon).
4784  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Someone living in Japan should go knock on Gox' door to see what's up on: August 17, 2013, 12:19:33 PM
Actually, someone trying this wouldn't even need to have their own account in a Japanese bank. Just split the profits with someone living in Japan. Needs to be a trusted person though.

Finding a trusted person is the real problem actually - have heard of at least one Chinese investor doing this who has made quite a lot (enough to buy a modest apartment in a major city in China was mentioned).

Also opening up a bank account as a foreigner may not be so simple (I recently found that Hong Kong simply would not let me do so despite having sufficient ID as I wasn't working there nor had family there so I was told they could not open a bank account for me - and got the same story at 4 different banks before I gave up trying).
4785  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Bitcoin movie, starring... Friedcat on: August 15, 2013, 08:26:11 AM
PS: I know what you found, but syllables are not everything in the Chinese pronunciation, tones are a very important distinguishing factor.

Actually tones don't help that much either when it comes to searching as there are many words that have the exact same same pinyin and tone (only Chinese characters are unambiguous).
4786  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Bitcoin Wallet for Android on: August 15, 2013, 06:27:26 AM
Speaking of vanity addresses, I imported the private key for my nice firstbits vanity address and have been using it on my phone for a few months now. Is that vanity address now basically unusable?

It depends whether UTXOs for that address were part of txs that were signed on your phone (if you are not sure then probably best to not use it any more).
4787  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Hong Kong and bitcoins on: August 14, 2013, 01:14:37 PM
Hong Kong is not at all what it used to be - I tried to open a bank account there earlier this year and despite having sufficient ID they would not let me open one (they demanded to know *why* I need a bank account in Hong Kong and basically treated me as though I was some sort of criminal as I just honestly stated "because I travel here regularly and it would be useful").

Thinking it might have just been some attitude at one particular bank my wife and I tried 4 other banks and got the same treatment at each (and even at a Bank Of China branch despite my wife being a Chinese citizen they would not let her open an account either).
4788  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Holy Grail BOUNTY on: August 14, 2013, 12:30:01 PM
I did send FT a PM in regards to the Namecoin task (and some others) needing their Review Due date and times to be put into the future but haven't got a response yet.

If anyone else is able to contact him perhaps they could ask him to check his forum messages.
4789  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-08-13 bitservicex.com - Why Bitcoin needs centralized regulation on: August 13, 2013, 01:41:14 PM
Do you think he is wrong about Governments and businesses creating their own alternative coins and successfully competing with Bitcoin?

I would not be so surprised to see things like BankcoinTM appearing (had written about this a year ago or so) but I think that unfortunately greed and manipulation of such coins would mean that most people are probably not going to trust them any more than fiat.

(By the way, fiat cash is not anonymous. If you pay cash in person then your face, clothing, language and location are known to the other party.)

Hmm... not possible to leave a bag of cash hidden somewhere and then give someone instructions on how to find it (or even easier just pay some nobody to do the cash delivery for you)?.

Bitcoin pioneered a successful decentralized currency, but Bitcoin will survive only in a museum. By the year 2020 many commercial enterprises will have rolled out their own (centralized!) crypto-currencies.

We've had centralized digital currencies for years but I don't see the Linden (or others) being something that we are going to be using to buy general goods and services with.

From my personal experience most Bitcoin exchange users are money laundering criminals, scammers, drug users or terrorists. I want nothing to do with you people. Bitcoin needs centralized regulation.

Seems like nothing more than a troll comment.
4791  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bad signatures leading to 55.82152538 BTC theft (so far) on: August 11, 2013, 12:53:29 PM
It's not much of a problem if you're using Bitcoin correctly (ie, not reusing addresses).

Hmm... so none of the clients mentioned re-use an address for change (as this is not something the end-user generally has any control over)?
4792  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: If you used Brainwallet.org - MUST READ! - Security Breach! on: August 11, 2013, 03:52:42 AM
e.g: I was wondering if I could send from a total of 10BTC at address "x", 9BTC to address "y" and 1BTC remaining change back to same address "x".

Does that work through brainwallet.org?

P.s: fees disconsidered in order to simplify the example.

Yes - that's how it creates the tx by default (if you want change to go to another address you'd have to edit it).

BTW - I would not use the tx tab of brainwallet as it only works *online* and it requires you to provide your private key (so a malicious version could simply broadcast your private key).
4793  Other / Meta / Re: Contact theymos for refund. on: August 10, 2013, 02:06:50 PM
They are still being given out, thanks to John being an admin, now.

Thanks - didn't know that - probably a good thing (if he can keep up with them all).

Although of course it does beg the question "if you can't find and label 100% of scammers then why label any at all"?

4794  Other / Meta / Re: Contact theymos for refund. on: August 10, 2013, 01:41:04 PM
The thing I am surprised about is that the OP has a "scammer" tag - I thought that they were no longer given out (am pretty sure that I have read posts from other mods stating that)?
4795  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does the trasnaction speed increas with hashrate on: August 10, 2013, 03:19:25 AM
The protocol adjusts the "difficulty" roughly every two weeks in order to keep the *average* time to solve new blocks to 10 minutes.

So as the time is only the *average* you can always end up with blocks that are solved much quicker (one miner's good luck) or much slower (all miners bad luck).

Also if the hashing power has been dramatically increased since the last "difficulty adjustment" then you can expect blocks to be discovered a bit faster (depending upon just how much extra hashing power has come online).

So in a situation where you have hashing power increasing dramatically you might find that transactions are getting confirmed more quickly than otherwise (although its not so likely to be a huge percentage increase).
4796  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Holy Grail BOUNTY on: August 09, 2013, 12:23:50 PM
Well, the idea is that if tasks are available for grabs, other people can grab them.

Indeed - there are already tasks available for grabs but no-one has expressed any interest in them (other than now the Namecoin one).
4797  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Holy Grail BOUNTY on: August 09, 2013, 06:26:52 AM
PM sent.

Am sure that FT will be happy to have another forum member interested in working on the project!
4798  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Holy Grail BOUNTY on: August 09, 2013, 05:32:27 AM
@domob - fixed the issue and have now created your account using your GPG key (an email *has* been sent this time) - sorry about the bad sign-up experience but at least you can see the support isn't too bad.

Any further problems please PM me.
4799  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Holy Grail BOUNTY on: August 09, 2013, 02:07:04 AM
I tried to register an account at CIYAM open with my GPG key at http://www.domob.eu/domob.asc and the site claims to have sent an email to me, but I didn't receive it (also not in spam folder or so).  What can I do to fix this?  (I also tried OpenID login with https://nameid.org/, but this also does not work.)

Okay - I can see the system actually didn't attempt to send you an email as it had problems understanding the output from GPG after it added the key (you should have seen that error first - probably it told you it thought that it had found multiple email addresses). I will look into getting a fix for this done today.

I haven't tried https://nameid.org/ although I have tested gmail and myopenid - I will make a note to look into that. If you could perhaps let me know what error you got using that then I'd appreciate it.

If you would like me to create an account for you manually then welcome to PM me.
4800  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / BitcoinStarter spam email on: August 08, 2013, 03:12:38 PM
I am not sure how BitcoinStarter got one of my email addresses but I was rather surprised to get an email from them saying that I was "one of their subscribers" (I have never subscribed to them).

Anyone else got this today?
