4821  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I Have Donated My Campaign BTC to buy Laptop for Practical Classes on: July 12, 2022, 05:30:40 PM
Cold wallet are:
1. Paper wallet, if properly generated on air gapped device
2. Reputed hardware wallet
3. Wallet generated on air gapped device such Electrum cold storage
There are basically two schools of thought when it comes to hardware wallets. Some would put them in the 'cold wallets' camp but others wouldn't. Then there is the question if they are not cold wallets, are they hot wallets? They are not hot either. The compromise would be to not put them in either camp but add a new section just called hardware wallets. They are cold in the sense that the private keys and seeds don't touch the internet, but they are hot because they are used on computers connected to the internet.

Keep doing good and don't get discouraged for making some mistakes here and there. And don't overwhelm the kids with too much information to create an opposite effect where they lose interest in Bitcoin instead.

Excellent work!
4822  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Anyone tried FTX swap with Ledger Live? on: July 12, 2022, 05:11:26 PM
What I always think about centralized exchanges is that they should be avoided in respect to connecting cold wallet with the exchanges just like what I pointed to above, they are custodial exchange.
FTX is a custodial and centralized exchange, like many others, but this partnership is somewhat different. You don't lose custody of your coins if you swap them through Ledger Live and FTX. That's what the official documentation says. There is no need to deposit coins into FTX, make the swap, withdraw from FTX, and send the coins back to your Ledger. The swap is apparently non-custodial in nature.

Time will tell how true that claim is. If users get their assets frozen for whatever reason, we can no longer talk about self-custody.
4823  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Italian League Prediction Thread (Serie A) on: July 12, 2022, 09:52:34 AM
Pogba knows the club, he understands the expectations, and the levels of professionalism Juventus aspires for. He knows the stadium and he is working with a manager who remembers his qualities and has faith in him. The fans loved him during his first spell at the club and he will surely feel that atmosphere. Everything else is now on him. If he wants to become a football player again, Juventus is a great environment for that.

Juventus needs further reinforcements in the attacking positions. Dybala and Morata have left. They were essential to the first team. Bernadeschi was mostly useless, but he still leaves a gap that needs to be filled. Chiese needs several months before he can play again. That will probably be somewhere in September/October.

De Ligt's departure would put a big dent in the defensive line. Napoli's Koulibaly would be a great substitute, but I am sure Napoli's president would rather die than to sell a player to a team that he hates. That's also part of the reasons why Serie A keeps getting worse and worse with teams offloading their best players abroad making the league lose quality.
4824  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Crypto Feed and Greed Index on: July 12, 2022, 09:36:41 AM
You might want to check your subject. It says Crypto Feed and Greed Index. Just replace the "d" with an "r".  Wink
I have honestly never cared about the fear and greed sentiment and whenever I have seen it being mentioned, there was always great fear when Bitcoin and the overall market was losing value. In contrast to that, when we are in a bull market the indicators would signal that investors are greedy.

If we are talking about Bitcoin, even without such market sentiments, many would agree that you should buy when everyone is selling and sell when people want to buy.
4825  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin price calculator - Calculate live and historic Bitcoin prices on: July 12, 2022, 09:22:42 AM
This will come in handy especially now since preev.com has been down for some time already. I tried to see if I can reproduce the display glitch dkbit98 mentioned even if he says it was fixed, but it seems to be working just fine both on Firefox and Chrome. Switching between the charts does require a bit of loading time, especially if you click on the "1Year" or "All" buttons, but it's not too much of an issue.

Where do you get your historical data from? Does the site display the lowest, highest, or a middle value for that day?
4826  Other / Meta / Re: Should rules on plagiarism be changed and updated? on: July 12, 2022, 08:52:17 AM
Pmalek are the rules really official?
As official as they can be. One of the mods said the same thing a while back. That's how I remembered that the rules can be considered official. No idea where to find that post though or who said it. It could have come from hilariousandco or Welsh as they are the most active ones when it comes to posting and answering questions. But each case is still considered individually and the punishments differ from person to person.
4827  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Anyone tried FTX swap with Ledger Live? on: July 12, 2022, 08:43:16 AM
Judging by this source from their help section, FTX has 3 different account levels when it comes to KYC. Unverified accounts where you only submit your email for the registration process, can't trade, deposit, or withdraw coins. The first level KYC requires personal data such as your name, date of birth, full address, and phone number. That limits you to $2.000 of crypto-only withdrawals per day.

So that's the minimum you have to do. The YouTuber in the video has probably reached Tier 1 or 2 in his FTX account, otherwise it wouldn't be possible to make the swap. The positive thing with FTX is that you at least don't have to submit pictures of your ID/passport for Tier 1. I am sure that many other platforms require pictures of your ID, a selfie, etc.
4828  Other / Meta / Re: differences in online crypto communities on: July 12, 2022, 08:23:44 AM
Telegram can be called the home of scammers. It is where one knows that scammers dwell and yet end up being scammed.
It also depends on what kind groups you are part of. If we are talking about Telegram groups that belong to big cryptocurrency exchanges, then the first thing you will come across is a scammer PMing you for this or that reason. But you are free to create your own communities, invite whoever you want, set your own rules, and apply them in practice. After that you can discuss whatever you want with people you know and/or trust. Telegram groups can be invite-only, so that helps in keeping douchebags out. When used properly and with the right kind of people, Telegram can be a decent chat platform with some good features.
4829  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Show off your hardware wallet on: July 11, 2022, 11:19:39 AM
Given that I own both models (S&X), I can say that the X is a much better device for me personally because it has a much larger screen, storage that does not limit the user with the number of installed apps or the size of the new firmware, and better quality construction compared to the S. If you had the chance to try it, I believe you would change your mind.
I have never had issues with the build quality of my Nano S. It's obviously cheap and could break easily, but just be careful with it. I don't hold my kid's hand the same way I hold a dumbbell. I don't cut salami the way I chop wood. You just adapt to the situation and apply different pressures. Would be good if the old Nano S could cope with at least 4-5 apps at the same time, but it's such a simple process to switch it up that it isn't worth mentioning.

Looking at a head2head between a Nano S Plus and the Nano X, they both have the memory to store the same amount of apps at the same time, they have the same display size, similar ST33 chips (maybe dkbit98 has more info about the differences between a ST33K1M5 and a ST33J2M0), with the Nano S Plus missing Bluetooth support and a battery, and the S Plus is twice as cheap.

I think StackExchange deserves a mention when we are talking about crypto communities. It looks a lot like reddit but I have seen very decent content on that platform. Sometimes when you google for the solution to a crypto problem, StackExchange is one of the sites that pops up around the top or at the top of the search results. I have never paid attention to the usernames of those knowledgeable StackExchange peeps, but could it be that some members from Bitcointalk are also active there?
4831  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Transfer from BRD on: July 11, 2022, 10:45:12 AM
Seeing it from your point of view and assuming the whole world is a hacker, in closed source wallets only the developers of that wallet can do any damage but with open source wallets, the whole world can search for the loophole and can take advantage of it Huh
You can try different attack vectors against closed-source software as well. It's closed-source nature is not a protection of any kind. Windows is closed-source and it has been vulnerable to many different attacks in the past and new ones will be found in the future as well.

I am in the mood of another comparison.
Imagine I gave 10 people a pill with instruction manuals detailing how it was made, what powders and ingredients were used, which symptoms it reduces, how it can be misused, what side affects it causes, who shouldn't take it, etc. And instead of reading it or looking at it but not understanding what it says, everyone just swallows their pill. That's open-source software for you. It doesn't do anyone any good if no one takes the time or knows what that pill is good for and if they should use it at all. However, its advantage is that you have that manual and it's up to you to inspect it.

I repeat, open-source software that is widely used and has a big community of people who can be trusted with verifying what the code does is always better than a closed-source software that leaves anyone in the dark. But open-source does no one any favors if the code isn't independently checked thoroughly and every time code changes are made.
4832  Other / Meta / Re: Where do you post most? on: July 11, 2022, 08:06:33 AM
I am going to make a guess of my top 3 boards without looking at the data on Ninjastic.space and then I will check to see if I was right.

I believe my posting habits look like this:

1. Meta
2. Hardware wallets in wallet section
3. Beginners & Help

Looking at the stats now, I see that I was wrong. My actual top 3 boards are:

1. Meta
2. Beginners & Help
3. Gambling discussion

Hardware wallet section is only ranked 5th. I guessed 2/3 correctly but the placement was wrong.
4833  Other / Meta / Re: modify button. on: July 11, 2022, 07:53:06 AM
That same help content can be seen in many other SMF forums, so it's not something exclusive to Bitcointalk. Here are just a few of them:
https://www.hihowareyou.com/messageboard/index.php?action=help
https://forum.mellencamp.com/index.php?action=help
https://www.comunidadmoviles.com/index.php?action=help

Although theymos could easily change this from "modify" to "edit" I doubt he will do it and it isn't really important either. People don't even read the rules here when they first sign up, let alone the help section. Maybe a 1-year signature ban for theymos would be in order for not posting a reference link for the text in the help section. Grin
4834  Other / Meta / Re: Should rules on plagiarism be changed and updated? on: July 11, 2022, 07:37:55 AM
As the rules are unofficial...
Actually the rules are official, but the sticky thread and list in Meta is unofficial. It seems really weird saying this. Maybe the Bitcointalk governing body didn't give it's approval for the list to be official Tongue. The title of the thread says "Unofficial list of (official) Bitcointalk.org rules".

Everyone has noticed that the overall activity is dropping and this couldn't have been missed by the forum admins either. In a situation where people are leaving Bitcointalk, being less active, and losing general interest in the forum culture, the admins have two choices: they can continue to ban people for plagiarizing a few posts (even if it happened many years ago), or they don't do it as much as they did in the past and only ban the worst of the plagiarizers giving many others a free pass. They went for the 2nd option.
4835  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Anyone tried FTX swap with Ledger Live? on: July 11, 2022, 07:00:50 AM
<Snip>
So it can't be done without having a registered FTX account and probably without passing KYC depending on the traded amounts. While you were doing the check, did you by any chance look at the difference in rates between Ledger's offer and the amount you could have gotten on FTX at that time? 1 BTC was equal to 17.595 ETH according to the rate in Ledger Live.
4836  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: What wallets I can use to get Segwit and Taproot addresses? on: July 10, 2022, 08:24:36 PM
Taproot gives benefits  to those users whose transactions requires multiple keys to sign them.  If transaction can be signed by single key and broadcasted after that the  taproot has no advantage at all. Is that correct?
Taproot certainly helps with multisig transactions, but if I remember correctly, they also make other scripts lighter. Timelocked transactions, for example, take up more space in a block than regular transactions. If I am not mistaken, such (more) complex scripts will take up less space thanks to Taproot.

Do I understand correctly that you can only send from Taproot addresses to Taproot addresses? If so, then this imposes restrictions, because as stated in this thread, only Bitcoin Core and Ledger wallet support Taproot addresses at the moment. Maybe some more, but still, apparently a little.
No, no Taproot is compatible with other address forms as well. You can send from a Taproot address to a Legacy or Segwit address. However, you won't be able to take advantage of signature aggregation that is offered with Taproot.

The service you are using will have to be compatible with Taproot addresses though. Just like when Segwit was introduced back in 2017/2018 we had many services that didn't recognize Segwit addresses as valid Bitcoin addresses and so you couldn't send Bitcoin to those addresses from those particular places. Even today some platforms haven't been updated to support Native Segwit.
4837  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Show off your hardware wallet on: July 10, 2022, 08:07:51 PM
The company decided to get rid of the last copies of this model as soon as possible, and for this it is trying to stimulate buyers with the help of nft bonus. Otherwise, no one would have bought them, because there are updated models.
I would never go for the Nano X over the older Nano S. Looking at how good my Nano S has served me in all these years, I didn't make a mistake when I bought it. There is the regret of having some of my data leaked together with my friend who received the package, but Ledger isn't the first nor the last company that will be affected with something like that because of negligence.

I was never a fan of the Nano Xs Bluetooth feature or the battery and we can see the problems the battery has caused with the latest batches. The Nano S Plus seems better to me than the X if it weren't for the missing support for a whole bunch of assets. Not that I need that support because I have very few altcoins, but just the idea that they forgot to add it or didn't do it intentionally to be able to release it as soon as possible, gives me a bad feeling and makes me question what else they might have forgotten or intentionally left out?
4838  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Question for Legendary Members on: July 10, 2022, 02:00:24 PM
Don't think of the legendary members as some kind of masterminds. Smiley
I heard about Bitcoin and it was suggested to me as a payment method before I became interested in it and started using it personally. I laughed at the idea of using some weird currency no one knew about back then. I thought my trading partners wanted to trick me into accepting something of no value to get a better deal. If I was just a little smarter in those early days, I could have stacked up tens and hundreds of thousands of Bitcoins.
4839  Other / Meta / Re: Should there be a central warning board (not reputation) on: July 10, 2022, 01:49:31 PM
I think such announcements should still be posted in Reputation and that they don't require a new board. The reason why someone isn't respecting the terms of a contract or an agreement don't matter.

A company that might go bankrupt and have difficulties sending people their coins is still a reputation matter. We have threads in Reputation that are basically discussions and exchanges of opinions whether or not subject X can and should be trusted because of situation Y. Coinify being close to bankruptcy or having administrative or regulatory problems is still a matter of can we trust this subject with out money or not.
4840  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Which is the best Hardware Wallet ? on: July 10, 2022, 12:39:32 PM
Well, any weak point in terms of privacy when connecting Ledger nano to Electrum server/s via VPN?
Electrum servers see your IP address, they know the addresses in your wallet, and they can see the balance. If you are using a VPN, they will just see a different IP address, but the same wallet information. You are also shifting your trust from your ISP to the VPN provider. Your ISP doesn't see what you are doing but your VPN knows who connected to their servers. They can probably get additional information like the sites you visited, the data you exchanged, etc. Most of it is surely encrypted though. Plus there is the dilemma of keeping logs. Some providers do it, others don't, and some claim they don't. But who can you really trust in today's world of liars!?

Regarding Trezor, I have never used it but think it is not working by its own and must be connected to some sever/s to accept/transfer  transaction as Ledger nano does.
It's the same thing. Ledger connects to Ledger servers and Trezor connects to Trezor's servers. Both allow you to add your own node information. You still have to rely on Trezor when it comes to software/firmware updates, bug and vulnerability fixes, support, etc.
