Very nice. Thanks for sharing.

In my vision some financial services like paypall, Dwolla, Moneybookers, VISA and more will become needless and the people need only a small client app for payments and people prefer to invest in bitcoins than speculate.

Yes. We don't have to tear down the old world before we start living the new.
They need us more than we need them. We don't have to start a fight.
We only need to choose better tools and dispassionately turn away from what doesn't make sense.

If you don't like my pool, pick another, but stop trolling here. Thank you.

Yes, please.  I don't like having to check in here just to see people fighting over what is the best pool etc. Start another thread for that.
I wish this would just be a thread letting users know about important issues with the pool.
I don't want to turn notifications off because I want to hear about any news like that.
4824  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Casascius coins pledge for European Bitcoin Conference on: November 06, 2011, 10:09:27 PM
I thought one of the big advantages of Bitcoin was the whole digital thing.. and that one would want to let people know about those advantages..
rather than encouraging them to buy overpriced novelty* items.   Undecided

I see memory dealers is currently selling those physical coins for more than twice what one can buy BTC for at any exchange.   Shocked

But I suppose if you can find people who will actually buy them, more power to you.
I just don't see how it really helps people understand what Bitcoin is really about.

Just my opinion.

* "novelty" in this sense: an article of trade whose value is chiefly decorative, comic, or the like, and whose appeal is often transitory: a store catering to tourists who loaded up with souvenir pennants and other novelties.
4825  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Boycott anti-bitcoiners movement. You discriminate Bitcoin, we boycott you. on: November 01, 2011, 09:20:55 PM

I do not really care much about "linkbiting". Simply posted something and decided to cross-post here. If someone goes to one forum but not another or does not like websites which use javascript I do not really care about that either and it is offtopic anyway.

FYI I did not mean by "discrimination" not using bitcoin as payment method. That would really be quite stupid, would it not? What I meant by that is more active hostility towards bitcoin, like suspending accounts because bitcoin is simply mentioned etc...

As for boycott thing, it is a voluntary I simply offered to share opinions not commanded you all to alter your behaviour based on some party line.

I personally boycott SONY (and I like that very much) I avoid ebay and paypal as much as I can. I never ever used that webshop thing and I am not going to anyway, hence this is irrelevant.

Whether any of you want to do something like that or not is your own decision.

The only reason for this thread is facilitate sharing of opinions on the matter. Though, still it seems anything posted here mostly only facilitates trolls growling or something that otherwise not worth the effort needed to respond to.

You try to lure people to your forum ( That's how it seemed to me too. Most forums I frequent don't allow crosspostings from other forums, especially ones devoted to the same subject. ) and you call us trolls? Because we don't want to join your "boycott anti-bitcoiners movement"?  It seems clear that you are not just sharing your personal preference for who you do business with, but are in fact trying to rally support for that movement.  Nothing really wrong with that but please don't try and tell us it is something else, now that it seems no one is interested.

I expected better from you Vladimir.   Undecided

4826  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Boycott anti-bitcoiners movement. You discriminate Bitcoin, we boycott you. on: October 31, 2011, 04:18:59 PM
What cornedbeefhash and psy said...

I already avoid using paypal and other existing systems as much as possible but I don't see a need for joining some organized "movement" and making a lot of noise about it. Being belligerent like that seems like it can only do harm to bitcoin.   Starting a fight with someone/something usually only makes them stronger and gives them a moral advantage in the eyes of many.

I find a better revolution/evolution is to just ignore the current powers that be and freely choose alternative tools and systems.  They will lose their power base not by us having to conquer them and take it from them but by us just moving on and not paying attention to them anymore.

If this threatens them and 'they' then choose to start a fight we will have the moral high ground and it will also show their desperation and their diminishing power and relevance in our changing world.

The Bitcoin Crypto-Currency Mystery Reopened
BY Adam PenenbergTue Oct 11, 2011

I like the point the first one makes. Bitcoin does not, should not, rely on any one personality or group.
Satoshi was probably making the same point by choosing to remain anonymous.
It is, at least partly, about moving away from centralized systems, and cults of personality, and kings and presidents, etc.
to decentralized systems.

Laws?! Where we're going we don't need laws.

I agree but people please don't piss and moan when you see a pedophile ring get busted with 200,000 bitcoins on their PC's, the world is a pretty dark place you kind of have to expect a revolutionary for of payment transaction to be taken up by those who live in the dark alley ways of soiecty

Not exactly sure what the last part of that is saying...

I won't be moaning worrying about what takes place in those dark places.  They have been there before Bitcoin. They will be there after Bitcoin.

Should we stop breathing air because "bad" people do so as well?  Should we charge for, restrict, and monitor its use to make sure only the
"right" people are using it?

And are you sure that your view of who is "bad" and who is "right" will always match the views of the powers that be, e.g. your government?

4831  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is UNIQUE on: October 23, 2011, 10:29:58 PM
laws? isn't btc about no boundaries? untracable & anonymous don't go together with laws

In the essence, if P2P Police and Smart Property are fully funcional (along with Open Transactions), that's right, laws may be unnecessary.

So looking forward to fellowtraveler's Open Transactions project to come online I am.   Smiley

Furthermore I fixed some stuff that should make it better compatible with newer versions of mining software. If you have the time would you mind to test again with your current version of GUI miner?

Still getting the "AttributeError: 'HttpTransport' object has no attribute 'failure'" error.

When I set it up in 'GUIMiner v2011-08-24' I choose the "File > New miner > New OpenCL miner..." option, so it is running poclbm,
according to the GUIMiner thread:

A malicious attacker needs not to target the pool or hidden service;
since TOR is a relatively low bandwidth network it takes very few resources to grind all active onion routers to a halt.

All active router info is publicly available at directory server.
Every router merely knows the last and next hop, the origin of attack cannot be traced and it only shows up as large amounts of traffic & appears as a normal router

DoS against the entire TOR network is also cheaper than a well hosted single site with high bandwidth.
Even a 20gbps attack would render the network unusably slow. It is a brute force method but it will achieve the goal & make a pool unreachable.

It only needs to last as long as people switch to other pools, and if they come back, target the network again.

Are you an attacker Jack of Diamonds?

If you want I can make him an offer he can't refuse.

Some day, and that day may never come, I may call upon you to do a service for me. But, until that day, accept this, as a gift.

4834  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: EUROPEAN BITCOIN CONFERENCE 2011, PRAGUE NOV 25-27 on: October 23, 2011, 04:52:39 PM
I would love to invite the CIA or FBI to debate bitcoin!

That would be incredible. Let the world see our arguments in the open based on individual merit!

More openness to alternative viewpoints in the community please. Lets not stop challenging ourselves otherwise we will become dogmatic cultists repeating each others inbred lines. Vili represents a significant proportion of society who thinks along his lines. We can build a bridge to them.

You are still missing the point. Bitcoin was invented/designed to route around the intrusive regulatory aspects of central planning for monetary systems. That will never change. Of course, no one has stopped challenging themselves, but it is immature to think that you can adapt the bitcoin cryptocurrency into something suitable for the Statist apologists like Vili and the other significant portion of society that you cite. No one cares -- it's a distraction and red herring diverting attention away from more serious discussions (at this conference and any other forum). Have a conference on "Should Bitcoin Exist?" if that's what you want to discuss. Furthermore, you don't understand the essence of bitcoin if you believe that dismissing legal conformity and moving beyond it is "dogmatic" and "inbred".

Bitcoin exchanges are constantly under attack in various parts around the globe. Let's truly take your suggestion and "challenge ourselves" on creating decentralized exchanges and creating business models and paradigms that make fitting into the current institutional structure irrelevant. It is a perpetually losing battle to seek minor legal victories within the confines of an arbitrary, subjective court system.

Being belligerent and flaunting oneself as a direct threat to the status quo I don't think will be helpful for Bitcoin acceptance.
And if you are not interested in such acceptance than that would be "inbred" and all that genjix was saying, which I agree with.

4835  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Backing-up Bitcoins within Bitcoin itself... on: October 23, 2011, 04:36:54 PM
Also the wording of your question is weird.

The wording of his question is weird because Atlas doesn't know how to speak English.

Why don't you address the ideas expressed instead always getting into these threads just to do personal attacks?
4836  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Vow not to exchange bitcoin for fiat on: October 23, 2011, 04:27:41 PM
I just want to know who's in it for the technology and potential.

Me is!   Smiley

I like the idea of taking a personal vow.  For many reasons. Not the least of which is reflecting on what one really wants to accomplish.
'The unexamined life is not worth living' as Socrates supposedly said ( a kinda personal vow of his perhaps )... but I won't get into a
philosophical essay.

And taking a vow, or making a similar public announcement, of what one holds dear ( the image of Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger singing
"This Little Light of Mine" at the Occupy protests just now comes to mind ) often can have a magnetizing effect to spark up another's
passions.

But I emphasized personal because I feel it is best to let others, look within ( or not ), and find their own relationship and way with
the changing world and the novel things it provides.

4837  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is UNIQUE on: October 23, 2011, 01:57:39 AM
Why is it that some of us see this thing as a true - to use OP's word - transcendence, while others see it as an impossible and laughable scam with no value?  It's as if we've stumbled upon the first printing press sitting alone in a meadow, and as we marvel at the possibilities of such an apparatus we're incessantly distracted by other onlookers who, noting that nobody uses such a thing, endeavor to condemn and deride our exuberance.

I think some of us will be looking back quite fondly on the work we're doing right now.

A fun look back...

Yeah, I tried running the Windows version by twobits. I setup a config file as instructed, but namecoind doesn't seem to work.

This thread helped me:
How to control Namecoind.exe

Just go to the folder where namecoind.exe is installed and double-click it to run it.  A window will appear with just a blinking cursor. That is namecoind running. Just minimize that window so that it continues to run so you can give it commands from another command prompt window.

Back out of that folder where namecoind.exe is and shift-right-click on that folder and then choose 'open command window here' from the context menu
( or else just open a command prompt in the usual way and navigate to that folder ).

Now you can give it commands by typing things like (you may need to give it a little bit of time to download the blockchain before giving it commands* ):
namecoind getinfo
namecoind help ( to get a full list of the commands... to create addresses... to send namecoins to other addresses etc. etc. )

*You can check what the latest namecoin block is here:
http://explorer.dot-bit.org

And then use that 'namecoind getinfo' command to see if it is uptodate before using other commands.

Heard of them yet?  They just recently won $10,000 at ContactCon in New York. They built FreedomTowers and FreedomLInk for OWS.

From their webpage:
http://freenetworkfoundation.org

We are an organization committed to the tenets of free information, free culture, and free society.
We hold that advances in information technology provide humanity with the ability to effectively face global challenges.
We contend that our very ability to mobilize, organize, and bring about change depends on our ability to communicate.
We see that our ability to communicate is purchased from a handful of powerful entities.
We know that we cannot depend on these entities to support movement away from a status quo from which they are the beneficiaries.
We believe that access to a free network is a human right, and a necessary tool for environmental and social justice.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They have a PayPal donation link on their site.  I don't know why a group like this hasn't started accepting Bitcoin donations already.

I sent them a message letting them know I refuse to use PayPal ( I explained why, including the recent Diaspora* thing, which I could easily see happening to them.. I am sure I don't need to explain more about the problems with PayPal on this forum ) just like they refuse to use unfree forms of social media like FaceBook, and suggested they start to accept donations in Bitcoin, which one would think fits right in with their philosophy and intentions to work towards a free culture and society.
