4841  Other / Meta / Re: Where do you post most? on: July 11, 2022, 08:06:33 AM
I am going to make a guess of my top 3 boards without looking at the data on Ninjastic.space and then I will check to see if I was right.

I believe my posting habits look like this:

1. Meta
2. Hardware wallets in wallet section
3. Beginners & Help

Looking at the stats now, I see that I was wrong. My actual top 3 boards are:

1. Meta
2. Beginners & Help
3. Gambling discussion

Hardware wallet section is only ranked 5th. I guessed 2/3 correctly but the placement was wrong.
4842  Other / Meta / Re: modify button. on: July 11, 2022, 07:53:06 AM
That same help content can be seen in many other SMF forums, so it's not something exclusive to Bitcointalk. Here are just a few of them:
https://www.hihowareyou.com/messageboard/index.php?action=help
https://forum.mellencamp.com/index.php?action=help
https://www.comunidadmoviles.com/index.php?action=help

Although theymos could easily change this from "modify" to "edit" I doubt he will do it and it isn't really important either. People don't even read the rules here when they first sign up, let alone the help section. Maybe a 1-year signature ban for theymos would be in order for not posting a reference link for the text in the help section. Grin
4843  Other / Meta / Re: Should rules on plagiarism be changed and updated? on: July 11, 2022, 07:37:55 AM
As the rules are unofficial...
Actually the rules are official, but the sticky thread and list in Meta is unofficial. It seems really weird saying this. Maybe the Bitcointalk governing body didn't give it's approval for the list to be official Tongue. The title of the thread says "Unofficial list of (official) Bitcointalk.org rules".

Everyone has noticed that the overall activity is dropping and this couldn't have been missed by the forum admins either. In a situation where people are leaving Bitcointalk, being less active, and losing general interest in the forum culture, the admins have two choices: they can continue to ban people for plagiarizing a few posts (even if it happened many years ago), or they don't do it as much as they did in the past and only ban the worst of the plagiarizers giving many others a free pass. They went for the 2nd option.
4844  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Anyone tried FTX swap with Ledger Live? on: July 11, 2022, 07:00:50 AM
<Snip>
So it can't be done without having a registered FTX account and probably without passing KYC depending on the traded amounts. While you were doing the check, did you by any chance look at the difference in rates between Ledger's offer and the amount you could have gotten on FTX at that time? 1 BTC was equal to 17.595 ETH according to the rate in Ledger Live.
4845  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: What wallets I can use to get Segwit and Taproot addresses? on: July 10, 2022, 08:24:36 PM
Taproot gives benefits  to those users whose transactions requires multiple keys to sign them.  If transaction can be signed by single key and broadcasted after that the  taproot has no advantage at all. Is that correct?
Taproot certainly helps with multisig transactions, but if I remember correctly, they also make other scripts lighter. Timelocked transactions, for example, take up more space in a block than regular transactions. If I am not mistaken, such (more) complex scripts will take up less space thanks to Taproot.

Do I understand correctly that you can only send from Taproot addresses to Taproot addresses? If so, then this imposes restrictions, because as stated in this thread, only Bitcoin Core and Ledger wallet support Taproot addresses at the moment. Maybe some more, but still, apparently a little.
No, no Taproot is compatible with other address forms as well. You can send from a Taproot address to a Legacy or Segwit address. However, you won't be able to take advantage of signature aggregation that is offered with Taproot.

The service you are using will have to be compatible with Taproot addresses though. Just like when Segwit was introduced back in 2017/2018 we had many services that didn't recognize Segwit addresses as valid Bitcoin addresses and so you couldn't send Bitcoin to those addresses from those particular places. Even today some platforms haven't been updated to support Native Segwit.
4846  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Show off your hardware wallet on: July 10, 2022, 08:07:51 PM
The company decided to get rid of the last copies of this model as soon as possible, and for this it is trying to stimulate buyers with the help of nft bonus. Otherwise, no one would have bought them, because there are updated models.
I would never go for the Nano X over the older Nano S. Looking at how good my Nano S has served me in all these years, I didn't make a mistake when I bought it. There is the regret of having some of my data leaked together with my friend who received the package, but Ledger isn't the first nor the last company that will be affected with something like that because of negligence.

I was never a fan of the Nano Xs Bluetooth feature or the battery and we can see the problems the battery has caused with the latest batches. The Nano S Plus seems better to me than the X if it weren't for the missing support for a whole bunch of assets. Not that I need that support because I have very few altcoins, but just the idea that they forgot to add it or didn't do it intentionally to be able to release it as soon as possible, gives me a bad feeling and makes me question what else they might have forgotten or intentionally left out?
4847  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Question for Legendary Members on: July 10, 2022, 02:00:24 PM
Don't think of the legendary members as some kind of masterminds. Smiley
I heard about Bitcoin and it was suggested to me as a payment method before I became interested in it and started using it personally. I laughed at the idea of using some weird currency no one knew about back then. I thought my trading partners wanted to trick me into accepting something of no value to get a better deal. If I was just a little smarter in those early days, I could have stacked up tens and hundreds of thousands of Bitcoins.
4848  Other / Meta / Re: Should there be a central warning board (not reputation) on: July 10, 2022, 01:49:31 PM
I think such announcements should still be posted in Reputation and that they don't require a new board. The reason why someone isn't respecting the terms of a contract or an agreement don't matter.

A company that might go bankrupt and have difficulties sending people their coins is still a reputation matter. We have threads in Reputation that are basically discussions and exchanges of opinions whether or not subject X can and should be trusted because of situation Y. Coinify being close to bankruptcy or having administrative or regulatory problems is still a matter of can we trust this subject with out money or not.
4849  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Which is the best Hardware Wallet ? on: July 10, 2022, 12:39:32 PM
Well, any weak point in terms of privacy when connecting Ledger nano to Electrum server/s via VPN?
Electrum servers see your IP address, they know the addresses in your wallet, and they can see the balance. If you are using a VPN, they will just see a different IP address, but the same wallet information. You are also shifting your trust from your ISP to the VPN provider. Your ISP doesn't see what you are doing but your VPN knows who connected to their servers. They can probably get additional information like the sites you visited, the data you exchanged, etc. Most of it is surely encrypted though. Plus there is the dilemma of keeping logs. Some providers do it, others don't, and some claim they don't. But who can you really trust in today's world of liars!?

Regarding Trezor, I have never used it but think it is not working by its own and must be connected to some sever/s to accept/transfer  transaction as Ledger nano does.
It's the same thing. Ledger connects to Ledger servers and Trezor connects to Trezor's servers. Both allow you to add your own node information. You still have to rely on Trezor when it comes to software/firmware updates, bug and vulnerability fixes, support, etc.
4850  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: What wallets I can use to get Segwit and Taproot addresses? on: July 10, 2022, 08:58:29 AM
As of today there is no wallet (that I know of) that generates Taproot addresses although it is supported at a protocol level. But pretty much every wallet made after 2019 supports Segwit addresses.
Ledger hardware wallets and the native Ledger Live does. If you are using the latest firmware, it contains the needed support for Taproot. You can create a Taproot account just like a Legacy, Nested/Native Segwit account. After that, you can generate Taproot addresses, send, and receive coins. I haven't tested it personally, but the option is there.

When it comes to the choice between Native Segwit and Taproot addresses, I would go for Native Segwit. Taproot is still new and lacks significant support to be used daily without running into difficulties when transacting.
4851  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Show off your hardware wallet on: July 10, 2022, 08:40:21 AM
Wasn't sure where to post it, so I will just briefly mention it here.

The official Ledger website is now calling their Ledger Nano S the Ledger Nano S: Final Edition. I am not sure when this was changed, I just noticed it now. Sorry, if it was mentioned already. Anyway, it's the end of production and the last 10.000 devices will include an NFT of some sort. Roll Eyes

There are a few pictures of this digital collection on https://shop.ledger.com/products/ledger-nano-s-final-edition.
Doesn't seem appealing to me, but I guess every product has its buyer. Hopefully, they won't drop support for the Nano S after a few months.
4852  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: New to Nano X Ledger and might have loss a transfer. Help please ? on: July 10, 2022, 08:28:13 AM
You shouldn't import your Ledger-generated seed into a hot wallet such as MetaMask to recover your MANA because you will be risking all your other assets as well. Especially if you have Bitcoin and some other alts of a significant value. Using that seed with MetaMask doesn't make it secure anymore.

I would move all my other crypto assets into different wallets generated from brand new seeds. After that, you can think about importing that seed into a hot wallet. If you mess up or get phished, the worse that can happen is you losing your MANA instead of MANA and everything else.
4853  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Anyone tried FTX swap with Ledger Live? on: July 10, 2022, 08:12:11 AM
I am sure that Ledger takes a cut when you swap your coins with the new FTX and Ledger partnership. I remember doing a similar check without doing an actual swap with one of their other partners in the past. I just checked the rates. The offered rates in Ledger Live were worse than what I was offered on the exchange website. There is no reason to think that things would be different now with FTX. I can try something similar with FTX just to check the rates later. I am not doing their KYC though. Cheesy
4854  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S Plus on: July 10, 2022, 08:02:36 AM
How downloaded file can be checked?
It's not possible to verify the Ledger Live installation binaries right now. When they abandoned the old GitHub repository and moved to a new one it stopped working. But the Ledger team should be aware of the problem and there was talk about this on reddit.

Their reddit moderator knows about it.

I wonder why Ledger's website only shows 2.42.0 for Ledger Live Releases and therefore no sha512 hash? https://www.ledger.com/ledger-live/lld-signatures

I assume some script broke when transitioning to the new monorepo on github - I'll notify the team, thanks for noticing

I will only do a head2head between Ledger and Trezor as the two most popular brands in this space.

1. Security - DRAW
- When it comes to the security of your seed and private keys, both manufacturers have done a good job in that regard and your keys remain your keys unless you give them to someone. I am leaning slightly towards Ledger due to a secure element, but since you would require physical access and the technical know-how of how to extract a PIN/seed from a Trezor, and you can mitigate the vulnerability with a complex passphrase, it's not too big of a worry for me.

2. Compatibility - DRAW
- Both wallets can be connected to several third-party apps in case there is no native support in Ledger Live/Trezor Suite.

3. Ease of Use - Trezor
- Ledger requires you to install individual crypto apps for your assets, but that's not the case with Trezor. If you use the old Nano S, you will run out of space after installing two stand-along apps. Although it's not an issue for me personally, I will give this point to Trezor. Working with and following the on-screen instructions on Trezor Suite/Ledger Live isn't difficult for anyone who has been using a computer long enough.

4. Option to store X number of coins - LEDGER
- Ledger supports more coins and tokens than Trezor. There is also no difference in support between the Nano S and the Nano X and both can work with the same assets or not. With Trezor, it happens that one model supports one coin, but the other doesn't.

5. Price - LEDGER
- Ledger hardware wallets are cheaper than Trezor devices. No need to explain this any further.

6. Privacy - TREZOR
- Both are privacy-invasive in their own ways. There are features you can opt out of but data collection, data storage, and sharing of data is a thing. Ledger stores private information of their users longer than Trezor, so the point goes to Trezor.
4856  Economy / Gambling / Re: Loyalty Bonuses & Promotions on Crypto Casinos and Sportsbooks on: July 10, 2022, 07:10:52 AM
I just noticed something I never thought about before when it comes to the names of the casinos. Wolf.bet and Tower.bet, for example. I see that the name you gave them is Tower and Wolf without the .bet domain. Somehow it feels like the domain is part of the name and something is missing when you just say "Wolf" without the .bet. Do you not consider the .bet as part of the entire brand name?

In that case, shouldn't BC.game just be BC because .game is also a domain you can buy? Looks kind of naked to me.
4857  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Wasabi blacklisting update - open letter / 24 questions discussion thread on: July 09, 2022, 11:00:23 AM
After all, Bitcoin is here to set us free from the heavy chains of our current monetary system.
But that's exactly what you are not supposed to be in their eyes. That's why there is so much focus on destroying what Bitcoin is and it has nothing to do with stopping criminals, pedophiles, and whatnot. It's about stopping all of us using and trusting something out of their reach. It's the same as with the POW mining objectors. It's not about having people move to clean energy sources or incentivizing them to do so, it's about attacking a core feature of Bitcoin in an attempt to give it a hard hit that would be difficult to recover from.
4858  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: MBTC in Electrum Wallet on: July 09, 2022, 09:32:06 AM
Not to get into a whole discussion about this, but mBTC is the stupidest denomination I can think of in crypto with the exception of gwei for ETH (and I'm not even sure what a gwei is, but ETH owners are apparently supposed to know).
I agree with you that in many cases it's unnecessary, but there are situations where it can help. For example, it's easier to tell someone to pay you 0.5 mBTC instead of 0.0005 BTC. What was the first thing you did when you saw the BTC amount? You counted the zeros, right? 0.5 is easier to remember than a 0 followed by a dot and 3 more 0s. However, I never use or think in mBTC denominations.

Btw, why is mBTC the default coin denomination in Electrum? I am sure there is a reasoning behind it. If we compare it to a standard ATM, I am sure people would agree we don't want the ATM showing us options to withdraw 5.000/10.000/50.000 cents. We would like to see the $ amounts instead because people think in $ amounts not in cents when they are using the USD.
4859  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [TUTORIAL] - How to create a multi-signed wallet on Electrum on: July 09, 2022, 09:10:52 AM
@gagux123
Some time ago, RickDeckard took the same steps you took and recreated the guide, but his screenshots are in English. This is the post btw. I see that your OP still contains the images in Portuguese. Maybe you should consider using the ones in English to make the post even better.

I am not a native speaker of English and please correct if there is incorrect grammar.
There isn't anything significant to correct and those who understand the procedure won't have difficulties understanding what you are talking about. But if you do want to correct something, you mistyped "click" on two occasions and wrote "clicks" instead. As in "clicks next". It should just be "click" without the "s".

Great tutorial!
4860  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S Plus on: July 09, 2022, 08:30:58 AM
You can replace this with new device if it's still in warranty, but question is what happens after warranty expires?
You can test it yourself like I did. Make up a story and contact their support. They will ask you to prove the claims by sending photos and/or videos showing the problem. Most probably you are going to need a valid ticket ID. If they are satisfied with what you sent them, they will tell you what to do next. Depending on the problem, you might get a free replacement no matter if the device is under warranty or not.

It is not clear to me why a company with great resources and experience can't produce a HW wallet with normal quality.
It's simple really. Better quality means greater initial investment in the materials, which reduces their profit margins. As a result, they earn less or they have to increase the price of their devices. If that happened, people would than complain less about the build quality, but would complain about the increase in price.
