BTW I am guessing if the reward was a lot higher then someone might have actually created a bot just to crack it.

Even so by doing something unusual (here I just hashed so probably something a little more exotic would be preferable) - and of course not publishing that information - brainwallets can be made much more secure.

Well done!

Was it the last clue that helped out?
4843  Other / Off-topic / Re: [puzzle] Work out a 4 word pass phrase and collect 0.1 BTC on: July 29, 2013, 12:54:05 AM
Hence, UCword/LCword/UCword/LCword

Close but not exactly right - actually if someone has a large text file of song titles then that might really narrow things down with a regex so won't give more info on this now.

I will help out with an earlier clue though and say that a "strain" would understand "strine". Wink

Going to sleep now but will continue with more clues when I wake up.

Next clue is "state of origin" (that ties in with the "strain" clue and should narrow down your searching a lot).
4846  Other / Off-topic / Re: [puzzle] Work out a 4 word pass phrase and collect 0.1 BTC on: July 28, 2013, 03:16:05 PM
Hmm, this worked so well I didn't even check it fits all the clues

It's not a "Captain Obvious" song. Grin

(or perhaps it is - your guess was the first song that I sang publicly and won a prize for doing so)
4847  Other / Off-topic / Re: [puzzle] Work out a 4 word pass phrase and collect 0.1 BTC on: July 28, 2013, 03:08:26 PM
I tried like this, I just PM'd you to be sure whether I'm right or not

Reply sent - the "strain" clue is relevant here.
4848  Other / Off-topic / Re: [puzzle] Work out a 4 word pass phrase and collect 0.1 BTC on: July 28, 2013, 03:03:49 PM
I'm sure I got it but I can't make it work

Case sensitively could be the issue (hint second word starts with a lower case letter).
4849  Other / Off-topic / Re: [puzzle] Work out a 4 word pass phrase and collect 0.1 BTC on: July 28, 2013, 03:01:54 PM
it's a new song or some old famous song?

It's old and quite famous (in the "strain" context).
4850  Other / Off-topic / Re: [puzzle] Work out a 4 word pass phrase and collect 0.1 BTC on: July 28, 2013, 02:47:02 PM
Next clue is that the phrase is taken from a song (funds are still there so the bots haven't one yet).
4851  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Do you just need to backup your wallet.dat once? on: July 28, 2013, 01:53:01 PM
OK, What would be considered best practice for a regular backup...after every transaction, every 50, 90 etc transactions?

Although I tend to backup up every transaction that is not necessary - I'd recommend getting into a regular habit that suits the # of tx's you make (so if you only tend to make a few every month then once per month would be fine but if you do end up doing a *lot* of tx's in any particular month you might need to backup more often at least for that month).
4852  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What are the pros and cons of coding an alt-coin in C#? on: July 28, 2013, 01:13:29 PM
This is a bit off topic, but I'm not a programmer.  What differs between C++ and C#?

They are completely different languages (try some internet searching if you are actually interested).
4853  Other / Off-topic / Re: [puzzle] Work out a 4 word pass phrase and collect 0.1 BTC on: July 28, 2013, 12:45:40 PM
No questions yet so I'll expand on the clue "strain" - it has to do with nationality.

BTW - this is also a test of the safety of "brainwallets" so it is entirely possible that a bot *could* get the funds first (let's see).
4854  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What are the pros and cons of coding an alt-coin in C#? on: July 28, 2013, 12:27:00 PM
You should consider whether a C# solution is going to go down well with Linux users (of which there are many on this forum).

Basically Mono is the only C# IDE for Linux and I don't think it is installed by standard in most distros (although for that matter neither is boost so maybe that isn't a big deal in itself).
4855  Other / Off-topic / [puzzle] Work out a 4 word pass phrase and collect 0.1 BTC - Solved! on: July 28, 2013, 11:09:58 AM
You need to take an SHA256 hash of the 4 word pass phrase (upper and lower case characters have been used) and then use that in brainwallet.org as its pass phrase in order to get the private key (public address is https://blockchain.info/address/148cWMjpGsDtkVMNEb5oH8GU8yvSbgGbTK).

Initial clues are "wild" and "strain" (more will follow until the private key is revealed and if you discover the private key be sure to sweep the funds before posting it).

BTW - the first 8 characters of the SHA256 hash that you will need to use as the brainwallet pass phrase is 4c46256d - happy hunting!

You are welcome to ask questions and anything not as direct as "what is the pass phrase" will be answered to help with the guessing. Smiley
4856  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: This user is currently ignored. on: July 28, 2013, 10:33:05 AM
You must have clicked the "Ignore" link below a user's avatar/info - you can also edit your ignore list from your Profile settings.

(with the # of trolls and blatantly rude people on this forum it was actually more likely to have been the correct thing to have done)

4857  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The fiat system is better in some aspects on: July 28, 2013, 08:22:43 AM
IMO a likely and sensible option would be to have a BTC account held at your bank (so they would look after your BTC for you).

Such accounts could be insured (at least in terms of the "fiat" equivalent of BTC that the bank was holding assuming that a heist occurred).
4858  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Does M of N multisig work with random recipient? on: July 28, 2013, 03:12:18 AM
What you could do to accomplish this would be to create some software that divided an SHA256 hash into 16 + 50 characters sending the first 16 and one of the other 50 characters to each person (via PGP/GPG to be safe).

The order of who is sent which would of course need to be known (by all if you wanted to final recipient to be any one of the recipients).

The private key could then be re-created from this SHA256 hash.
4859  Other / Off-topic / Re: [Puzzle] Orange glass door. (50 mBTC prize) on: July 27, 2013, 10:18:56 AM
I would guess it requires a User Name with three or more non-vowels in a row (in which case is not me) or a User Name with more non-vowels than vowels (in which case also not me).
4860  Other / Off-topic / Re: Bitcointalk Captain Obvious Awards - July 2013 on: July 25, 2013, 02:55:59 PM
Hmm... well thanks for the inclusion and if I win then perhaps the rock could be donated to a worthy cause (such as to Bankers who think you must have rocks in your head to prefer Bitcoin to fiat). Grin
