Ahh will it not show the address? And has it been like that for more than 2 weeks?

I was wondering if it was to do with the 2016 blocks you get to contest a channel's CT (Confirmation Transaction) broadcast to the blockchain.
4842  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Day 1: what the lightning network has set out to do on: January 15, 2020, 08:02:26 PM
NOTE: remember I'm trying to make the whitepaper more concise, people will question this part so it's helpful to have it even if it isn't directly related to why the lightning network as a thing and how it functions. If you want an argument about Moore's law feel free to open a topic Grin.

My blurb:
    • transactions are sent over a series of micropayment channels (so payments can be made off chain).
    • Transactions are signed and broadcast across the bitcoin blockchain which allows for untrusted parties to send payments to each other. These are broadcast via a series of decrementing timelocks in order to increase security (this allows for malleability reduction as it means that a transaction can’t be double spent – for example: if Alice sends a transaction to Bob, Alice initially sends a transaction but Bob’s node crashes, Alice must wait for that transaction to become invalid before broadcasting a transaction from Alice → Derek → Bob, bob can’t then try to rebroadcast the old transaction for acceptance and cause Alice to lose the same amount of funds twice.

The Trouble Of The Bitcoin Blockchain
    • The bitcoin blockchain uses a broadcast protocol whereby all participants/nodes receive a copy of the state changes to the chain.
    • If this protocol is used for all financial transactions, significant lag may be caused on many machines (for example when updating the chainstate – the database of unspent transaction outputs)

Why the blockchain won’t keep up
    • Visa processed 100 billion transactions in 2014[2], based on standard micropayments currently of 2 inputs and 2 outputs using native segwit addresses ~280 bytes, would make for 26[2sf] terabytes of data a year. With 1 billion transactions, and the fastest searching algorithms (with self balancing trees or a balanced hash function) is 20 million searches for each transaction 1bn(log2(1bn)). Most processors are able to handle several billion tasks a second so 20 million tasks on their own isn’t too much of a problem but with the average of 300 million transactions a day that visa faced, this would be impossible for most computers to handle, and would trequire a clock speed of[3] 247GHz just to keep up with the current transactions, making resyncing impossible (as it is the point where the system can just about keep up with the transactions), there will be further complications to this such as memory recall times from disk (milli seconds), ram (micro seconds), cache and registers still take a few nanoseconds to access so will still cause issues with processing the sheer number of transactions.
    • The processing power mentioned above would price many people out of being able to run a full node and would mean bitcoin will be a lot more centralised. At the least, there could be many people running a node but with a recent chain copy if they have 1THz of CPU power or higher.
    • The increase in demand may lead to more centralisation and more third parties being trusted which means less people will have voting rights on the chain and those people have more power to drive up fees for transactions and can allow for custody of coins to be held by someone else (so they can spend your coins as they wish) or they can censor who can send funds on the blockchain too and ban or freeze a certain address for spending funds. They can also refuse to accept a transaction and rewind blocks to credit the wrong person for a certain amount in an extreme case.
4843  Economy / Lending / Re: Lightning Network Lenders' (and borrowers) discussion thread. on: January 15, 2020, 04:31:51 PM
It won't be a double spend then. Almost every time you do a double spend you have to know you've done it (on most wallets). I haven't found one that doesn't...

Can you find the 2of2 multisig address then? You should be able to see where the funds came back into your account and you can just send that address or txid then.

It'll have a multisig input script if you want to know what it'll look like on a blockchain explorer but anything in the link posted is enough for us to find it.
4844  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Is speed test dot net accurate? Getting 110 Mbps on 5G on: January 15, 2020, 03:11:28 PM
Wow, is 5G really a gamechanger compared to 4G? Feel that 4G is pretty quick enough with pages loading in just a few seconds.

Wel everyone wants smart tech and doesn't care of the repocussions so probably.

Hearing gen z whine into their alexa for a timer has become the new norm... (I wouldn't go anywhere near one).
4845  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Discussion and support on the lightning network lessons on: January 15, 2020, 03:04:29 PM
Can I get a screenshot? Perhaps it's an issue that needs to be opened on github instead also if its directly linked with the program.

I could probably work out how to get rid of them but if you haven't found it on the gui after a bit of searching it's be a fairly unstable deletion and you're better off waiting for them since you'll sacrifice your channels funds trying to fiddle about with them so much.
4846  Economy / Lending / Re: Lightning Network Lenders' (and borrowers) discussion thread. on: January 15, 2020, 03:44:43 AM
I'm giving it a go anyway.

@tl you did an uncooperative close or a double spend?

Edit channel is open with 0.00392856
4847  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Discussion and support on the lightning network lessons on: January 15, 2020, 03:36:11 AM
Gonna put a tokened response here to show I replied.

I'm opening up a channel with you and it should have 0.004 in capacity. I sent a low fee because its 4am here and I need sleep 😂. Sk it should confirm by the time I wake up.
4848  Economy / Lending / Re: Lightning Network Lenders' (and borrowers) discussion thread. on: January 15, 2020, 02:56:01 AM
Are you just trying to open a channel?

What address is funding it, can you look at it on a blockchain explorer?

I could try opening one with you but all I have is éclair?

Edit: opening a channel soon.

Also gonna plug my lightning tutorials if anyone wants to hit the link in my "bio".
4850  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Is speed test dot net accurate? Getting 110 Mbps on 5G on: January 15, 2020, 02:35:15 AM
What does the "5G" in your subject line mean?

It's an arbitrary schematic.

1G - phone calls
2G - with texts
3G - with 2mbps data (afaik)
4G - with 20mbps data
5G - up to around 8 gbps of data afaik... None of the masts are yet configured to that speed afaik, most will probably be gigabit though at least the receiving transmissions will be.

It's for mobile network utility definitions (I can't grammar).

They're now charging extra for 5G devices but I bought my phone before it was a huge thing. Kinda surprised they didn't block it as part of a sales technique to buy a new phone (like they're doing now with them).
4851  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Discussion and support on the lightning network lessons on: January 15, 2020, 02:16:55 AM
Hi, I'm going to be starting to post lessons on the lightning network availabe here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5217699.msg53607838#msg53607838

If you have any question on it or are a bit stuck with anything feel free to ask them here.
4852  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Thinking of continuing my "a week to learn" topic with whitepapers on: January 15, 2020, 02:14:46 AM
I've decided to start my topic here, I'll make a new topoic for my discussion and support stuffs: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5217699.msg53607838#msg53607838

Click notify if you want an email when I upload but I'll try to stick to 8pm utc

Quote post to delete
Thanks for all your input I'm just going to give this a bump. I have an exam Monday afternoon gmt and then I'll be able to concentrate more on this (first couple of days are done already) anyway it'll definitely be started by Wednesday. Should I make the introductory topic today (Saturday) so you guys can add it to notify if anyone's interested or shall I wait until it all gets started?

After then this thread or another one will be made for discussions as I think it's nice to keep things separate a bit.

And yeah @etf if it's there then I'll know its important. Especially block sizes since the first transaction into the multisig has to be there and the consensus was the bit about the ln compliance in the chain afaik (to add an extra enforcement feature).
4853  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / [Complete] A fortnight of lessons on the lightning network on: January 15, 2020, 02:10:49 AM
I have seen little evaluations of the lightning network that cover the high level and low level content. I will attempt to take a look at the LN based on it's whitepaper and project the important parts I think are neccessary to give you a basic knowledge.

Please do not reply to this topic, any responses will be deleted, discussion topic can be found here instead: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5217701.msg53607856#msg53607856

As my first pieces of advice, this may not be as comprehensive as you expect or it may be more than you can handle. I'm trying to condense a 70 page document into 14 pages that can be easily read and quickly understood, I will try to cover everything but may leave out some parts I don't find important or parts I think are covered elsewhere. I would encourage you to do your own research either alongside this or afterwards.

I noticed a lot of webcasters seem to do seminars at 8pm UTC so this will become the time I upload my lessons here. They should be short enough that you can fit two or three into a 10 minute period if you miss some days.

I would also encourage you to try if you want to learn more:

320 000 000 (number of searches) x 4 (2 input 2 output average) x 300 000 000 (number of transactions a day) / (3600x24 – seconds in a day) = 247 000 000 000 Hz

Edit log:
Revisions made on lesson #3 and #4 as per recommendations on script availability and precompleted forks

Why are there two code segments?

I can fill this and then send LoyceV a 6 hour request at 9am tomorrow if its any help (9am in my time is the time he posted here). Kinda wanted to try a 3 way thing anyway... See how it all works.

nvm just realised it's testnet.
4855  Other / Meta / Re: [mod & admin appreciation] the lack of censorship on this forum is amazing! on: January 14, 2020, 03:44:46 PM
Perhaps because the discussions mainly revolve around the technique of Bitcoin and many are interested in profit instead of supporting a particular theory or trying to direct opinions towards a wrong belief.

The problem that I think the forum is facing is fake news and FUD which so far is available to everyone & makes some people misuse it.
In general, the forum is balanced and gives everyone the freedom to write whatever they want without restriction.

I was kinda talking about what sets this forum apart from most social media... Fud is attached and unmoderated in most others and for almost everything a fact is something you've determined to be true 6+6 is 1012 but it's also 1210 (it's an awful example but without the subscript both are true in different cultures). I know what you mean but if we add too many controls it can get too out of hand.

@jetty, if we're not on firstName basis I assume that post wasn't for me 😂. But yeah moving topics as apprised to deleting them is a good way to go.

Nice hidden message you got there in the OP jackg. As soon as I saw the "sign" I copied it and pasted it in notepad. Grin

But I doubt the people who are intended to be the target population are going to have the wits to notice the sign.

And yet to some others the mods are all Nazis here  Grin.
Mods are paid with hate. Its part of the job. Cheesy

Hehe, I feel outed... 😂 Should've left a joke down there too.

I too love the freedom this forum offers! Once in a while someone suggests to restrict freedom of speech (often with arguments such as "this person is racist"), but I'm glad this forum is still as free as possible. I think by now it's safe to say theymos was a good choice, satoshi picked the right buy to run this forum.

I've recently become allergic to the word "offended". So many people are offended for less and less important things nowadays. I'd like to say: Stop being offended! Why would you choose to feel miserable because of something someone you don't even know said on the internet? If that's important to you, you should re-evaluate your priorities. Grow a thicker skin Smiley

Remember: you can't have the freedom to say what you want without other people having the same freedom!

You use the word you're allergic too quite a lot... You're going to start causing your reactions 😂.

But yeah I can see why it is. Mainly cryptocurrency guys are introverts for the most part and when stuff is written n down it can sometimes seem harsher than it is. Some other people just need external evaluation from strangers and they're always the ones to offend and cause problems too..
The lack of strict or absolute censorship is amazing, though it to an extent allows trolls to flex their muscles on the forum, but that's part of the fun and the drama, the mods and the admins keep to the rules, and as long as you're not breaking anyone of the rules, your freedom of speech goes unchallenged in the forum.

It would have been an entirely different ball game if theymos was in total control,(you understand what I mean)he allows the forum to run perfectly without much imposition.Since freedom of speech is unimpeded, if you don't like what a user posts you can ignore them, that's why that option was provided.

Yeah it's something that could've killed the forum off or at least surpress the drama and not let us find out information about users... I think a lot of funny conspiracies may have been propagated through here in the past.

I can't edit quotes anymore on my phone...

I'd disagree everyone's here for a profit, I don't think many of the long standing ones here are but I do think the thing that unites us is the interest in cryptos and their functions.
4856  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Is speed test dot net accurate? Getting 110 Mbps on 5G on: January 14, 2020, 03:14:38 PM
Well it was £10 for 5gb but they made it unlimited for customers with them for quite a while afaik.

I live in Cardiff, I think it's the only major city that enjoys this speed since a lot of others have businesses that take a lot of bandwidth (with card readers and stuff).
4857  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Is speed test dot net accurate? Getting 110 Mbps on 5G on: January 14, 2020, 11:26:54 AM
Yeah @coin I'm getting 50-70mbps now, back to slow Internet (and it's a first world fairly major city). Couldn't find averages but they'd probably have everything in their and not just mobile networks? Most people round here have gigabit WiFi so it's still slow on those standards.

@leo yeah thanks fast is giving aboit the same (and ahhhh that's netflix's analyser).
4858  Other / Serious discussion / Is speed test dot net accurate? Getting 110 Mbps on 5G on: January 14, 2020, 05:30:25 AM
I was using speedtest.net on my phone and it seems to get a 117mbps download speed, is this normal? I haven't seen it that high before but it could just be me (it's normally around 50 but at midnight it went down to 10 so they might have upgraded the transmitter).

If it is accurate this is quite an advancement for data networks (I only pay about $15 for unlimited everything).
4859  Other / Meta / [mod & admin appreciation] the lack of censorship on this forum is amazing! on: January 14, 2020, 04:42:12 AM
If you look at a lot of mainstream social media, they do a bit too well at trying to stop things like indirect hate speech and freedom of expression and this is something I think bitcointalk controls pretty well... While I don't appreciate hate speech, I think it's often best to leave it up and allow a community to attack that person or ideology rather than just remove it from the server and say "that's that mater resolved". (by indirect hate speech I mean when someone speaks out about something and it's due to a lack of public coverage that they feel the way they do) - it's obviously better to educate people more on an issue rather than just to delete it; but what mainstream social networks are about education these days?

But this is just an appreciation post for Theymos and the other mods who seem to have a very well balanced view on moderation of the forum (as balanced as I've seen anyway).

i don't endorse hate speach on any issue but sometimes you need a radical to get the message across and it helps to control ignorance

Local rule: don't quote post or reply to the one above all and his alts... Thanks
4860  Economy / Economics / Re: Demand for computing power on: January 13, 2020, 12:19:49 PM
Gpus are and were already used heavily for data mining. Not sure about deep learning ai but pattern matching and protein virtualisation hsve both been used on gpus by universities with success. Stanfprd had folding@home which you might be interested in looking at (folding is taking a large series of numbers and reducing it into one meaningful output).

He is interested in the $ aspect, folding@home is not an attractive option.

That's why I said looking at, NOT DOING!

It's a proof of concept in itself at least and demonstrates one use case...
