Gpus are and were already used heavily for data mining. Not sure about deep learning ai but pattern matching and protein virtualisation hsve both been used on gpus by universities with success. Stanfprd had folding@home which you might be interested in looking at (folding is taking a large series of numbers and reducing it into one meaningful output). These tasks would t as ke anywhere from around half an hour to around twelve sbd would sit idle when not using your computer (reassigned after 2 weeks if still incomplete).

Similar gpu farms are used by big pharma in the US and government research in the UK. But these will probably not resemble standard domestic gpus.
4862  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Chain reorg question on: January 10, 2020, 08:43:18 PM
If a block is orphaned most of the transactions will normally appear in the unorphaned block anyway (especially is consensus rules aren't changed).

In addition, I'm not sure about whether they'd be recycled back into the mempool but my instinct tells me they would... I know they're recycled the other way around so the signature doesn't have to be verified twice (once entering the mempool and once entering the block) so blocks can be added a lot faster.

I think we're in good steading until interest rates start to go up again...

I think a lot of companies are holding cash and probably giving no, low or negative interest rates to others, the eurozone and Japan have negative interest rates which is causing a bit of an anomale too (if you have a good enough credit score, as a company, you can probably get free money if you're loyal enough to one bank (or own it)...
4864  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Should I run my node all the time I am online? on: January 07, 2020, 09:02:32 AM
Pooya raises an interesting point actually, perhaps you could look and see how many users you have connected to you since you said in a previous topic you don't get many. If you have at least one or two connections it would be worthwhile keeping it running especially if they don't have full block height, if you haven't got any you could look at closing the node.
4865  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Using Electrum with a Hardware Wallet? on: January 07, 2020, 08:21:23 AM
Yes go back to the receive tab and I remember it being a button on the right of that that probably says something like "show on device" when hovered over...

I'm out travelling so don't have a hw with me to test it on though.
4866  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Should I run my node all the time I am online? on: January 06, 2020, 01:17:46 PM
Similar to what loyce said, have you thought of connecting through tor so your visibility stays higher since your ip will likely change based on the store but you still might be in people's peers dot dat if you use an onion name (but downloads may be a lot slower). I'm not sure if there's a ratio of tor to clearnet nodes either.
4867  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Core Linux binaries installation question on: January 06, 2020, 10:55:10 AM
You probably don't...

Is the stuff in the share directory the same as the stuff in the bin one? They're either copies or different versions.

Dot H is a C header file which may or may not be used in the code when it's run (probabky wouldn't suggest deleting it though just to be on the safe side). And the dot so and a few others are probably just other scripts like the header file thst can be run on other devices.

(starting to think I've used the dot 1 stuff before on a certain architecture or something when the original won't run but it might have been a different piece of software I was using at the time)...
4868  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Should I run my node all the time I am online? on: January 06, 2020, 09:28:16 AM
If you can leave one running and it won't affect your bandwidth and you don't care of the energy costs/aren't paying them (tbf they're fairly negligible if it's a laptop running linux) then yes it helps to propagate the chain. But if you're not able to leave it running there are many more nodes that can handle the task in the network and if your ping speed is low or you have few connections then it might not matter so much.

There are currently 11000 nodes, if you feel your vote won't make much of a difference then there might not be a point to run it unless you can throw it on in the background and it doesn't affect anything.

Current network state can be found on bitnodes.earn.com (which I can't copy and paste for some reason 🙄).
4869  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Help with Electrum on Ubuntu on: January 06, 2020, 12:30:37 AM
From what I remember you just type electrum in the terminal...

I'm not sure how to get it to appear as a desktop icon though as I don't even think it makes "start" menu links.
4870  Other / Meta / Re: [TelegramBot] Merit watcher and Mention Notification Bot on: January 05, 2020, 11:42:20 PM
Hey I'm using your bot, it works really well so far I was just wondering if there were a list of features (I'm wondering if the bot just checks new posts or posts that are edited because I think the second might be difficult to implement if edits aren't stored somewhere). For example if you're the first response and someone posts after you and and then quotes you or something like that.
4871  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: You the local Bitcoin joke in town? on: January 05, 2020, 10:43:50 PM
As I always say, my strategy is to hodl with most of my funds... Up or down, I still have the same number of Bitcoins.

I've never become the butt of the joke to others, my greatest critic is normally myself.

I don’t understand how that could happen because you registered your account in 2014 And it’s impossible to buy your bitcoin only on the year when it came to your all-time high. It’s just not right. Maybe it just happens to be your friend's story But not yourself. This is not cool, lol.

I don't think he mentioned him buying it he mentioned his friends buying it.

@OP have they kept hold of their coins or did they sell and did you let them know about cryptocurrency in 2014 and 2015?
4872  Economy / Lending / Re: Free lightning tests on: January 05, 2020, 10:22:31 PM
I have put up a raspiblitz node for testing. Feel free to connect to it and open channels.
It is something I am testing so it might burp and go offline but I backup all channels on a regular basis.

Fixed those links for ya Wink.

And thanks for posting here, do you have quite a few channels open already (just to check routing can be done fine)? I couldn't seem to find it on the acinq explorer yet either (but that might just be a delay or me being sloppy with the search engine).
4873  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: what derivation path coinbase is using? on: January 05, 2020, 01:44:10 AM
They'll know how their system works. They were using full nodes at first and I imagine they still are. The issue with publishing proprietary security methods are thst it can make your security systems less secure and thus easier to bypass or someone from the inside running network operations and keeping the server online may be able to work out what private keys are going to be in use from the software team...

Coinbase seem to script most of their work themselves so it's for them to know how things are derived...
4874  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: what derivation path coinbase is using? on: January 04, 2020, 09:55:16 PM
What do you mean? I doubt coinbase is using that bip and are probably just using core to generate a new address for each user... They may have something scripted to derive a certain private key or it may just be given a label assigned to that user. They existed long before the seeds came into use so they must have their own solution to this already.
4875  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin inflation on: January 04, 2020, 08:54:41 PM
No.

Fiat needs inflation to ensure people keep spending their coins but it needs a balance so its worth saving (I. E you can buy 2 bags of rice today but only 1 tomorrow with the same amount then the currency would be too unstable and probably would be replaced pretty soon) .

The government's would rather you didn't invest in their currency and instead invested in the economy or "yourself" (spending).

I don't think any government sees crypto as a threat and I'm not sure many governments are happy with the fiat system as it stands now...
4876  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Ideas for increased security on: January 02, 2020, 12:49:14 AM
I think op means the current implementation. As currently there's either a yes or no option or an OK one (I forget which).

It is probably a good idea to enable users to check for an update before the password is entered but implementation might be difficult as it then changes how the software loads from the very start(....)
This is something like, if ever there is an update you will be notify before to enter your password. Is it something like forcing the user to update their electrum client?
Might be difficult if that so, what if the user don't want to update their client? do they can still proceed?
Difficult implementation for sure .
4877  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Where to import minikey from Casascius on: January 01, 2020, 10:36:37 PM
I think its supported by electrum but I'm not sure, it might be the best place to start though: electrum.org/#download

Armory looks like the only other  secure way to do it... You can also use blockchain.com but I wouldn't recommend it due to it being a webwallet.

Or you can follow the method here to decode it yourself if you can program or find the necessary tools and take your machine offline until the coins are spent: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mini_private_key_format#Applications
4878  Other / Off-topic / Re: Crypto Resolutions 2020 on: January 01, 2020, 10:24:33 PM
I managed to buy something with bitcoin and it was a very exciting experience... Paid a bit of a premium for it but I just wanted to feel like I could do it...

Alts were very bearish this year, btc was pretty bullish though compared to 2018 so let's hope that continues...

It feels weird this is coming up to my fifth year here, kinda exciting too! We had the ln developments last year so let's hope that continues into this.

4879  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Ideas for increased security on: January 01, 2020, 09:50:42 PM
This is probably the wrong place to make this also as you're better off posting it on their github... I don't think the electrum deva are as active here as elsewhere...

It is probably a good idea to enable users to check for an update before the password is entered but implementation might be difficult as it then changes how the software loads from the very start: which in theory should be easy to implement but turn out to be difficult to implement depending on how their engine renders screens...
4880  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Money service business licence needed on: January 01, 2020, 09:26:36 PM
You'd be better off going to a lawyer or joining a forum related to business/finance or whatever than listen to people here (including me).

I don't agree with going to a lawyer/attorney, afaik they'll charge a lot for not very much and it might not even be their specialism... If you do, at least try to factcheck what they're doing to ensure your operations are being done above board...

The best thing you can do, if you're going to go that way, is read up anything relevant you can find on that license from the licensing board before going to the solicitor for help or advice...

If you're starting a semiserious business operation, you might need to start a partnership with a legal team or higher a solicitor to deal with all the licensing yourself as part of your company too for if there's a dramatic regulation change..

Tbh, most of the information you need shouldn't be too hard to find or request from the registration/regulation body (at least in countries with a regulator that is open).
