4901  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Pywallet 2.2: manage your wallet [Update required] on: January 07, 2019, 08:55:47 PM
Is there any released 2.2 version? I can not found any link.
I want to dump wallet file from 0.12 version, but pywallet from github by jackjack-jj doesn't found any key
what did you download exactly? And which OS are you wanting to run on?

I've used the .exe listed in the OP (https://github.com/downloads/jackjack-jj/pywallet/PWI_0.0.3.exe) to install and run PyWallet (and necessary libs) on Windows 10... and also used the pywallet.py file from the github (https://github.com/jackjack-jj/pywallet) under Linux.
4902  Economy / Reputation / Re: marlboroza using ""plagiarism"" as weapon to silence critics on: December 31, 2018, 06:29:53 AM
If you want to cure the "real" source of a lot of the problems on this board... simply remove the entire Altcoin section.

IMO, most of the spamming and merit begging (and other "net negative") activity is a direct result of all the "bounty hunting" (I really hate that term)... and the various ICO pump and dump scams that went along with the absolutely insane amount of copy/paste coins and tokens that appeared when BTC spiked in value and every man and his brother tried to cash in. Roll Eyes

What then followed was a flood of users from "poorer" countries who discovered they could supplement their income by spamming all over these boards, twitter, telegram, facebook etc.

Coupled with "devs" who didn't care because half of the projects were scams... and campaign managers who didn't care because they got paid regardless... it was a recipe for disaster. Undecided

I wonder what would have happened if theymos had charged BTC to list an altcoin like the big exchanges do? Huh
4903  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: my electrum wallet (NEW VERSION) has been hacked on: December 31, 2018, 05:35:48 AM
... I'm not even sure what they could possibly do to fix the vulnerability which is my concern unless an error code is just sent but that'll have to be tested for an index out of range error and would mean less backwards compatibility.
The problem with attempting to "properly fix" this issue... is that all the Electrum Servers would need to be updated so that they returned something meaningful for the client to parse.

Someone posted a link in another thread about the Electron Cash "hack" that they implemented in the client... which, while effective, is not really a "proper fix".

Also, it isn't really a vulnerability in the typical sense of the word. There isn't a direct security vulnerability with an immediate threat to the user. It doesn't auto-download any malware, the user's wallet/seed/keys are not at risk etc... unless the user manually downloads the malicious client and executes it.

(An alternative, probably better approach is to use thomasV's Bitcoin address and the signed message beneath and then it'll be obvious for people using an old version if it's not there and newer versions could verify the signature on receiving the message).
How would you sign the message without the private key? You'd need the Electrum server code to have access to that to be able to sign the message... Shocked Shocked Shocked
4904  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: bitcoin fork questions for BTC and BCH on: December 31, 2018, 04:36:39 AM
You most likely need to download a Bitcoin Cash wallet, a Bitcoin Gold wallet, etc, and import there your bitcoin address(es) that had the bitcoins using your Bitcoin private keys.
Where can I download this wallets?
Bitcoin Cash - https://www.bitcoincash.org/wallets.html
Bitcoin Gold - https://bitcoingold.org/downloads/ (full node client) or https://bitcoingold.org/electrumg/ (light weight SPV wallet)
4905  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I have the 12-word, how do I find my private key for a specific rcving address? on: December 31, 2018, 04:31:59 AM
Yes, I found some coins at m/0'/0
I'm still missing 0.91 BTC at a certain receiving address - but i can't find this receiving address generated at all using the bip39 script with my 12-word list
Have you checked that address on a block explorer to confirm that the 0.91 BTC are actually still in said address? Huh
4906  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Is there a fast way to make a watch only wallet on mobile out of xpub, zpub addr on: December 29, 2018, 01:02:02 AM
Electrum does not support having multiple master keys in one HD wallet. Even for watching only wallets. You need to create multiple wallets. (Note: this is true on desktop as well AFAIK!)

I would think that even though they should be using different derivation paths/addresses (xpub vs. zpub), this could prove to be very problematic and confusing, so is no doubt why it isn't supported.

Likewise with trying to combine a master key with "a legacy address" (I assume you mean a single private key? Huh)... Electrum does not support different "types" in one wallet. So, you can't import a single private key into an HD wallet.

4907  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum Hashes on: December 29, 2018, 12:47:58 AM

PLEASE do something about this issue & at the very least run a "Official Electrum Server".
I don't see any point in that... you're still having to trust a third party... if you REALLY want to trust the Electrum server you connect to, you should set up your own full node and run your own Electrum server.

Quote
The current scenario is scary and you never know, what advanced future attacks are brewing by the bad guys.
Personally, I think the issue is being blown out of proportion a little bit...

Electrum is still secure... this was really just social engineering by abusing a feature within Electrum. It still required that the user download, install and run malware.  It's not really that different to buying Google advertising and setting up a fake Electrum website and tricking users into downloading your fake Electrum.

I only ever download Electrum by going to electrum.org, downloading the executable... and then checking the file signatures are legit. That is probably the most crucial step!
4908  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: There has been an increased number of "fake" electrums out there, be careful. on: December 29, 2018, 12:37:46 AM
This attack is really just a variation on those browser popups that pretend to be a message from Microsoft saying that your computer is infected and you need to call 1-800-PLZ-SCAM-ME for assistance... or visit some website and download a virus removal tool which actually installs malware on your PC.

Basically, a somewhat "official" looking notification is sent to a user via the abuse of a feature (popup notifications in browser, server error message in Electrum) ... they believe it and follow the instructions and end up downloading malware with a subsequent financial loss. Undecided
4909  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: wallet.fail - 35C3 talk on hardware wallet vulnerabilities (Ledger, Trezor) on: December 29, 2018, 12:22:24 AM
There is a really good overview/intro to the "f00dbabe" hack on the Ledger here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNBktKw9Is4

IMO, he explains it very well in fairly simple terms... as well as reiterating that while they have custom firmware running, private keys are not able to be extracted (yet?). They've managed to trick the device to run a custom firmware, but communication with the Secure Element is another story (which also seems to be what Ledger are claiming).

Certainly a timely reminder that there is no 100% secure setup... there will always be vulnerabilities.
4910  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: There has been an increased number of "fake" electrums out there, be careful. on: December 28, 2018, 12:22:54 AM
The electrum-projects one was actually verified by github and had the green verified logo next to it. That is another factor that led to me downloading it.
What is this "verified logo"? Huh

I don't recall ever seeing any Github repo that has a "verified by github" logo attached to it? Even the official Electrum repo here doesn't seem to have any verified logo? Huh
4911  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum Hashes on: December 27, 2018, 08:17:25 PM
how is it not already sorted? i guess, electrum is the one of the oldest wallet out there.
Fixing things "properly" takes time... the worst thing the devs could do is rush a "fix" that hasn't been properly tested that then turns out to make things worse!

this is scary. does anybody know how to find honest servers?
There is no danger if you do not download and run the malicious software.

If you connect to a server and it comes up with the error... connect to a different server. At worst all they can do is log your IP and addresses... but ANY Electrum server can already do this. They can't steal your BTC just by connecting to a "bad" server.

electrum.hsmiths.com is one of the "oldest" Electrum servers that I know of... whether or not it is any more trustworthy than any other Electrum server, I have no way of knowing/confirming.

Just pick one from the server list that IS NOT in the list posted above...
4912  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum Hashes on: December 27, 2018, 07:25:52 PM
my thoughts as well. which server is the official server to connect to?
There is no "official" server... there are just "public" servers available, that anyone is free to setup and run... If you are attempting to avoid the Electrum "fake error message" attack, it doesn't matter which server you connect to, they can't hack your wallet unless you download the fake version of Electrum.

According to the above posts, your version of Electrum is legit, so just connect to any Electrum server and try to send your transaction. If you get the fake error message:

IGNORE IT... DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK!

Then go and change the server to something else and try again.
4913  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: There has been an increased number of "fake" electrums out there, be careful. on: December 27, 2018, 07:04:57 PM
Just to clarify, we're safe as long as we don't follow the link and download the software, correct? Is there any danger if you use a watching-only/offline signing setup?
That is correct.

The current client itself is "safe"... This is a social engineering exploit that was abusing a "feature" within the Electrum client to try and trick users into downloading a malicious version of the client. The attack requires that you to download and run the malicious software to steal your coins.

So, if you are currently using the client from https://electrum.org/#download and have not downloaded or installed the "fake" client that was being promoted in this attack, you will be OK.
4914  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S USD Value Incorrect? on: December 26, 2018, 02:38:57 AM
I thought there was a power ledger wallet as when you type power ledger wallet, there is a site called powerledger.io?
Did you look at the website? Huh

Thanks for the information with everything else man.

By the way, how many of these coins can i install at once?  Example i installed bitcoin and also waves already.  I know there is a limit but i believe that has changed?   Also if i see waves in my nano ledger s when i scroll around it on the ledger screen, that means i have it downloaded right?
There is no "exact" limit... It all depends on specifically which coin apps you install on your device. What changed was Ledger refactored the apps, so that coins which are similar (for instance, BTC, BCH, LTC, DOGE and other coins based on BTC) are able to all be installed together and "share" the BTC coin app code on the device... the end result being that you can install more of them. However, other coins which do not have similar code take up more space and you'll be limited to how many you can install before the device runs out of space:

The number of installable apps varies

  • Apps have different sizes.
  • Apps based on Bitcoin or Ethereum are small. You can install a lot of them at the same time, stacking them. You can install up to 24 apps that are based on Bitcoin.
  • Other apps are independent and cannot be stacked. You can typically install 4 to 5 of those.
  • If you can install less apps than before, reinstall all apps in a different order to reset the storage.

Ledger suggest either simply using "Manager" in Ledger Live to install/uninstall coin apps as required... or buying additional devices Tongue
Quote
Simultaneously use more apps
To avoid uninstalling apps to free storage, you can use another device for different apps. If you restore the recovery phrase from the first device on the second one, both devices manage the same private keys and will access the same accounts
4915  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Programming a miner on: December 26, 2018, 02:21:33 AM
I have been interested in building my own and programming it myself. I have learnt to build it but just need to learn the programmingt, maintaining and upgrading part of the miner.
The first step I felt was to learn how to build a computer. Instead of that I learnt to build a mining rig. Now that I’ve learnt to do it. I would like to program it to mine for me.

I have gotten some response on a little bit. So first step after the mining rig is built.

1. You have to put windows 8 on a USB and plug it into the mining rig. Once this is done then updgrading the windows 8 to 10 for free
2. Download software from online but i don’t know where and which software to download.

Right... so by "build a miner", you mean actually mean that you just physically put a mining "rig" together... ie. motherboard+cpu+ram+PSU+GPU(s)

and by "programming a miner", what you actually mean, is that you want to install and configure all the software required (like Operating System and mining program)... you'd not actually looking at writing your own mining code from scratch are you? Huh

If that is true, then the best place for you to start, is probably with Google: https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+set+up+cryptocurrency+mining+rig

There are countless tutorials, both written and video, that explain the steps necessary for putting together a rig, the hardware required and the software required for mining various cryptocurrencies.
4916  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: supply of merit on: December 26, 2018, 02:13:07 AM
This is the crux of the matter. I'm here again with 200+ sMerit to give away while I listen to Joan Baez. I'm listening to Diamonds and Rust at the moment, and all I am finding is rust. Come on guys give me some diamonds.
I feel your "pain"... I have like 100+ sMerit waiting for a good home. Sadly, all I see are people posting on dead threads, posting on megathreads, posting reworded answers given by the 10 people posting before them and posting questions about merit Roll Eyes

Maybe I am just looking at the wrong boards? Huh
4917  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Live on: December 26, 2018, 01:57:09 AM
The ledger USB doesn’t reset. It’s the ledger live that resets.

So what I do is I add the accounts that I have from my ledger USB to the ledger live. For some reason about 2 months later everything is deleted and I had to start over adding the accounts onto ledger live.
The only reasons that I can think of that Ledger Live account data went missing from within the app are because:

1. The Ledger USB was wiped and setup with a new seed (and therefore new accounts/addresses)
2. The Ledger Live "wallet data" was not found or corrupted (ie. a new/different user account was being used, or the folder with Ledger Live database had been removed, or the Ledger Live database had become corrupted etc)

I opened my Ledger Live app for the first time in months today... and all my data was still there... even after I ran the update to 1.2.7... so I'm not sure what happened on your PC.
4918  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S USD Value Incorrect? on: December 26, 2018, 01:27:07 AM
Also are you familiar with powerledger?  I notice that ledger s supports it.  But then it shows you need MEW or mycrypto as the wallet similar to like waves wallet and nano ledger s?  So example if i keep powerledger in my trading account, i can't just send it to nano ledger s.  I need either MEW or mycrypto to use in combination with nano ledger s?  So you cant even use powerledgers own wallet for this?
As far as I can tell, POWR is just another ERC20 token that utilises the ETH network and there is no "Power Ledger wallet"... so I'm not sure what you're talking about? Huh

Like all the other ERC20 tokens, it will require you to use an ETH based wallet that supports tokens, like MEW or MyCrypto, in conjunction with your Nano S.
4919  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S USD Value Incorrect? on: December 25, 2018, 11:48:04 PM
HCP, when i do the thing with waves, so that would mean all my waves would be transferred to the nano ledger s if i do the transfer?  Thus there would be 0 waves in my waves client?
Do you know what happens to all those airdrops from waves like wave community token and similar coins etc?
No. I have no idea about waves. Go ask on the Waves Community Forums.

Quote
Also.  Does this mean i could basically right now check my nano ledger s with either ledger live or that bitcoin ledger app from the chrome store?  Thus i still have 2 options to choose from anytime i want?  Also i notice that when i opened ledgerlive without the ledger connected to it, it still showed the currency balance of btc there.  But that is updated live is that correct?  Like example i sent some btc using the bitcoin ledger wallet from chrome.  Then i unplug it from laptop.  Then i open ledgerlive... but i do not have the ledger connected to my laptop.  It would show the correct updated btc balance?
Yes, the public keys for your Ledger Nano S are "saved" within Ledger Live wallet... so it is a "Watching Only" wallet. So it can show live balance without your device connected. If you receive any coins in the accounts that you have setup with Ledger Live, the balances will be updated accordingly.

This is one of the key benefits of Ledger Live... you can monitor your accounts without the device being attached.
4920  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S USD Value Incorrect? on: December 25, 2018, 11:42:51 PM
Okay when i installed waves from coin app from manager... i actually had the waves lite client opened.  I did not notice this earlier.  You say you are not suppose to do that.  Is there any effect this had?  I had the waves lite client opened and did not know it would have any affect.
No... I'm saying that if you try to use Waves client... and have Ledger Live open at the same time, it most likely won't work properly as your Ledger Nano S can only communicate with one program at a time.

Nothing "Bad" will happen... it just more than likely won't connect properly.
