4941  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Only have enough $$ to buy one mining rig... SHA-256 vs Scrypt Mining?! on: April 08, 2016, 10:09:15 AM
Buy the GPU's for scrypt and other non-SHA256 altcoins, point them at multi-pool with auto mining feature. Profit! SHA-256 mining is a race to the bottom due to rising diff for bitcoins, while scrypt mining with GPU's do not have this fast rising diff problem at present time. Unless someone comes out newer scrypt miners, even then you can mine altcoins with non-scrypt/non-SHA256 algo.

If you are mining GPU's chances are it's a ETH rig currently.  That seems to be the new "it" alt coin for gpu miners, I still hold reservation's and have not built any new rigs to mine it.  I just don't want to build then quickly after be forced to sale.

That being said pure scrypt has asics... they beat the heck out of GPU's.  So were talking about algo varients of scrypt that are GPU resistant.  And sha256... I still tend to mine BTC been a long time since I have mined an alt on it.
Ether is infinitely risky right now because Ether could collapse at any time and requires a large investment to actually make a few pennies. That said, the best cards for Ethereum tend to be cards that are cheap and also powerful; 750, 750 ti, 950 all work well, however the first two are much more economical than the latter. AMD also produces powerful cards, and cards like the R9 285,  290, and all of the R9 300 series crank out enormous hashrate for one card. Keep in mind of the large risk and initial investment, but the reward is mind-blowingly high right now. Ether ASICs might come out eventually, but looking at the stability of Ether, it may not last long enough for that to happen.
4942  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5: 1155GH(+OverClock Potential), In Stock $0.319/GH & 0.51W/GH on: April 08, 2016, 10:01:23 AM
it is now running on a 1300W PS with another S5:

it seems a bit better after only 1h... time will tell (it's on cgminer 4.9.0)

we are starting to have good weather and today for no reason one of my s5s decided to throw out 25,000 HWE about .19% and it was hashing at only ~500 ghs.. even tho there were no x's and both boards were showing 50c..

i took the fans off and blew out the dust, wow so much dust.. it seems to be running better.. maybe its time for a spring cleaning? dont foreget the psu too.. mine was caked in dust as well.

yeah, everybody forgets about dust in miners after a few months , especially winter. Just cleaning out the dust on the panes of the miner can lower temps drastically. Maybe the temp sensor malfunctioned or died and the miner was tricked into thinking it's running at a good temp, then overheated a bit? If possible try to get a new hashing blade, but it's not worth it at this time as the price for s5 hashing blades is around 150USD.

4944  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ASIC manufactures ... who is who? on: April 08, 2016, 03:16:28 AM
4) All crypto ASIC suppliers / manufactures are evil.
I wouldn't exactly say that but -- they ARE strictly in it for the money. That said, yes there have been many that pushed things too far and definitely took advantage of a market that was biting at every Shiny New Thing they announced eg, AMT/Bitmine.ch, BFL, BA et al and I am sure that there will be others. Still definitely Buyer Beware of any new company that shows up.

For now, the only ones still standing with any decent reputation for delivering product after the past 2 years of scammers are Bitmaintech, Avalon, and BitFury. Love'em or loath'em, only Bitmain and Avalon make usable miners for the general public. I leave out Inno because of the A1 is now useless and anything based on their A3 still ain't there for the public. As for the SP50... Roll Eyes
All mining hardware companies pretend to make very reliable hardware to boost their image, then cut down on every cost possible to save money and still rake in a good profit. If only greed didn't do that to people, we might have good miners. There likely won't be new asic chip companies in the future as we're in too deep and there's just too much competition in the ASIC market nowadays with Avalon, Bitfury and the occasional Gridseed miner flooding the market.
4945  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: How loud is a Rockminer R-Box (100ghs) on: April 08, 2016, 03:08:20 AM
They're not incredibly loud, and the fans are replaceable if you want to. 72mm is a weird number so you might find it hard to find a replacement fan, but overall R-Boxes are very quiet and great for all people.

4947  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BITMAIN AntRouter R1: 1st wireless networking device with bitcoin mining chip on: April 06, 2016, 08:05:14 PM
Hi all

Does anyone use his R1 as WLAN client? I have a bunch of U3 and i would like to let them mine in another room because of the noise. But there is no ethernet connection inside this room. I would like to stop using my Raspi for connecting the U3 to my WLAN and installing my R1 for that reason.

I've tried a couple times, but didn't get it to work. It won't connect to the wlan nor is it accessible via cable. I had to reset my device in order to getting a connection again. Thanks for your hints.
R1 wifi is pretty unreliable. It does work but the strength is pretty weak and you're better off buying a cheapo tplink for a connection. U3s are supposed to be connected thru the usb port, and i'm pretty sure wlan doesn't work for u3s.
4948  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: BEST HARDWARE FOR 1 BITCOIN? on: April 06, 2016, 08:00:39 PM
Antminer S7 is the best choice, mate.

Might be a bit hard to get a S7 for 1BTC shipped, especially if he need a PSU for it too. Also it might not even be good for him, depending on his electricity rate.

then no miner it's good for him, because the s7 is currenctly the most efficient

if he can find one used, he would get out with it for 1 btc, maybe in his location to avoid shipping
I'll look for second hand one here in spain... I'll keep you in touch

I think you are fighting a hard battle.  Most gear in EU costs more then it's worth due to vat/import tax.  So your used gear..... chances are you would pay more then it's worth.

I suggest you buy something and have it hosted somewhere, as EU tends to have high electricity prices to in a lot of cases.  Add that to the vat/import.. very hard to start profitable mining.  You might be better off buying 1 coin and hold then mining in your area.
Hosting is a good bet, there are many reliable hosters out there, and unless your elec is cheap like notlist3d just said, you would  probably be better off holding 1 btc and selling it after the halving. Trading is a great idea as well, but if you don't have experience it's not suggested as you could lose a lot of money. Wait for the Bitfury 16nm miners to come out, and snag one. You'll likely make a bit of profit as their efficiency will be enough to keep mining past the halving, unlike our overhyped s7s which will quickly become unprofitable very soon.
4949  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: New one fan S7 on: April 06, 2016, 10:44:17 AM

@ mtmining2

try fan speeds  65 to 70% was top speed on batch 1 to batch 15

so

clock the gear to freq  500 fans to 70%   check temps under 65 c    fan rpms  about 5500 and errors less then 0.0100
clock the gear to freq  525 fans to 70%  check temps  under 65 c    fan rpms  about 5500 and errors less then 0.0100

see how high you can go with freq and keep temps under 65 c
see what you need to get  fan to do 5500 rpm  as this new delta rates 6000 rpm

buying this to think you will certainly do freq 700 is foolish

adding a second fan looks like  a project but possible.

@ generalt    finally tested the 2 gpus will send a pm

Won't you lose significant hashing power by dropping the frequency to 500. Thus reducing bitcoin profit?

Yes but finding safe numbers to not burn the miner is more important
Just buy a 120mm Noctua fan and put it on the miner. Save a lot of time and you won't have to deal with the freq and such. Or buy a cheap 120mm industrial pwm if you don't care about noise. I dunno if there's a place for a fan on this miner, but I doubt Bitmain would make a new chassis just for these batches.
4950  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitfury: "16nm... sales to public start shortly" on: April 06, 2016, 10:37:41 AM
*sigh* looks like bitmain will be our savior again. Unless Bitfury pulls  a magic trick on us, we'll be seeing some ridiculous bitmain miner with terrible efficiency on the market with a terrible price... It all gets better every day, doesn't it? If this continues after the halving difficulty will need to drastically drop for current gen chips to still be profitable.

And what are your guesses how much it will drop, when BF has the 16nm tech runinng  Grin Shocked
Near or below current difficulty for an antminer s7 to make at least a penny a day. Assuming Bitfury already has the 16nm chips and don't keep it to themselves, they probably won't run at a loss and will probably keep making money. There is also a chance they'll never release it, but it's so hyped now that they could make quite a big profit if they released it after the halving and with most people using outdated rigs. Ofc bitmain could have made a more efficient chip and miner by then, but i'm not real optimistic because they tend to jack prices way up whenever they can for the first few batches, and it looks like they're not really getting anywhere recently.
BitFury does not make miners for the general public. They make the chips and sell them to integrators to make miners. btw: that also applies to themselves (BitFury) as their data tank farms and 'mobile PH' setups are done by a division of theirs. Nice way to keep all markups within the same parent company Wink

Aside from the Community miner project, you can bet that whomever takes up the larger public market for ready-to-run miners using BitFury's chips will be asking all the $$ they can get same as Bitmain does and for the same reasons.

As for when 16nm chiips and miners using them show up, please re https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1291890.msg14386376#msg14386376

Both BitFury and of course Bitmain with their certain to be in development 16nm solution use <drumroll please> TSMC. Correct me if wrong but I  believe Innosilicon uses TSMC as well. Soooo....
If I had half a brain, i'd know that Bitfury stopped making miners back in 2014 I believe. Just looking st the expected date the chips might be released makes me shiver as it'll take a month or 2 for people to actually make a miner with the chips. Hopefully it'll come out near mid or early may as miners then will probably only be released around the halving or even a bit later.
4951  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience Compac BM1384 Stickminer Official Support Thread on: April 05, 2016, 10:11:21 PM
You made sure to copy over the zlib.dll or whichever it's called?

Also, Win10 sucks. I'll probably never officially acknowledge support for Win10 because I'll never have a computer running it to test anything on. But a couple folks on here have used it with success.
Win10 does suck. Windows pumped it full with added things they assume their customers need, but really it's just microsoft being sold out by a few companies and it drags down performance in basically every area. The only computer that I have running Win10 is a dell 11 series laptop, and it's at 80c idling because of all the extra features on there dragging it down. Don't do it, don't upgrade! My compac works fine on W10 though, but since I use a rpi to control my compacs it's useless.

4953  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: I need an advice on: April 05, 2016, 08:52:04 PM
As long as electricity is not a concern, consider buying an antminer s1. They're built like tanks and last for so damn long- in fact I have one from 2013 that still hashes and runs like new! 360W/180GH/S full hashrate, or pencilmod for near 1w/gh.Will never make you money, but great for experimentation and beginners. If you like a miner you can REALLY work with, buy a Gekkoscience Compac from amazon, ebay, or bitshopper <--- best price if you live in the eu but shipping kills it for us muricans ;-; Lots of documentation and you can mess around with it. 2nd most efficient miner out there, but won't make you money, if at all a penny a day or less. .3

I see you weren't joking about the spam thing and this lasting only 1-2 weeks. Must be running a bit low on bitcoins. I understand, but i'll be on the lookout for a more permanent campaign to join later. If this is ever extended, great! Pretty looking signatures and you guys have insane rates for now. Smiley
4957  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: April 05, 2016, 08:34:30 PM
Haven't seen a dedicated speculation thread for it yet, there's been far more speculation as to whether any new generation of chips actually exists in a mass-producable model yet. Looking into the past I would gamble there being an "S7+" or something of the sort. It's a tremendously costly process to retool a factory and bitmain is going to keep pumping out s7 hashboards as long as possible, I'm betting on a couple more batches of the s7 single fans, and then who knows? Hopefully a 4-6 board rig with some small efficiency gains or maybe some lower sound levels.

Me neither, so i thought i ask around here...
Yeah, well, that would be rahter oldschool to come up with S7+ "crappy" miner with the halving standing at your door....
BF, Bitmain 16nm -> 0.1J/GH Homeminer shortly after halving =  Wink Roll Eyes
What'll likely happen is Bitmain will seemingly come out with a miner with slightly higher efficiency, but running on underclocked BM1385 chips, just like the S2 and S4s. Amazing how effective Bitmain markets their miners, underclock em a bit and call it a new miner. Ofc it might not happen as the S6 hype was killed by Bitmain skipping 6 and going to 7, but still it's a definite possibility that they'll reuse some 4U rackmounts and use up their remaining BM1385s on some rebrand miners while they begin production on a new miner chip.
4958  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Review] Avalon 6 Miner - Winter Mining - Notlist3d - Also FAQ and Help on: April 05, 2016, 08:29:17 PM
I received my hp server psu from HolyBitcoin and while waiting for a permanent C13 plug end for the power cable I am making, I whipped together a temporary 240v power cable for the psu, good enough to run when I am at home.  The machine only sees 11.9v right now, but it hashes away happily at 3.4TH.  So no damage done, hurray!  I am using the 240 outlet in my laundry room.  It's funny, the little fan on the psu is louder than the sanyo on the A6.

And that is a nice thing about the A6's they are still quiet miners compared to most others.  Not as silent as the 4.1's (man were those quiet).  But still I had them in my room when testing and did not bother me.  I keep very few miners in my room during testing.

And you are right a lot of server PSU's use small high RPM fans... they can get quite loud.  Its kinda amazing how small fans put out a good amount of noise.
If only server PSUs were slightly modular, they'd at least be able to fit and have bigger fans so they wouldn't have to run at such high rpm. Still, most servers are hosted in remote areas of buildings so sound isn't an issue and server psu builders are still on the mission to create the flattest psus with the loudest possible fans. Clap clap way to kill our ears.. ;-; I use a  server psu as well but I modded it enough so that I can keep it in my laundry room without there being a jackhammer in my house. I've just been to my friend's house and surprisingly A6 miners are relatively quite. Pretty surprised since i've been a Bitmain fanboy for quite a while now..

In that case, wait for hardware after the halving as right now, no miner is expected to roi because of difficulty and the halving. Bitfury said they'd release their chips near the halving, but apparently many people guess that because of TSMC, the date may be as late as early fall 2016. Purely speculation, Bitfury may be at the top of TSMC's list and it may be in time, but the estimate says that we could be going into the halving with S7-style efficiency.
