501  Economy / Speculation / Re: No rebound on: July 03, 2014, 11:17:02 AM
Note that senior and even hero bitcointalk member accounts have been sold. Wobber today is not necessarily the same person who created the wobber account in 2010.

Onkel Paul
is that allowed?

Yes. Prohibiting it would not work anyway, and disabling accounts based on sell/buy suspicions would probably do more harm than good.
So if you need to rely on an account holder's identity, use another method of identity verification. PGP signatures are a good option.

Nu geht dann auch gleich der Kurs wieder ein bisschen Richtung 660$. Mal sehen, ob die 700$ noch vor meinem Urlaub kommen.

504  Economy / Speculation / Re: $650 is a joke ! on: July 02, 2014, 01:20:54 PM
I am so sorry for you. Didn't your mommy tell you that playing with money is for grown-ups only?
In any case, you should complain to the shady guy who promised you a $3000 price, he obviously did not keep his promise.

Onkel Paul

Seriously, BTC will most likely be worth more than $1000 later this year, maybe not $3000, but if you wait a bit you'll be better off than if you had put it into a bank account with meager interest.

Gutti geht zu Ripple? Da muss ich ja meine Haltung zu Ripple noch mal überdenken, bisher hatte ich die Leute für recht kompetent gehalten...

feet, not kilometers.

Ah, mixed up imperial and metric units - always confusing, how should he know that km and ft are not approximately the same thing? Grin
(actually, connection distances of up to 300km have been reported for Wifi technology: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-range_Wi-Fi)

I'd have loved to contribute, but the days of CPU mining are long gone...
Good luck in saving as much of the museum as you can!

According to this article (in german, http://www.golem.de/news/protonmail-paypal-blockiert-sicheres-e-mail-projekt-von-cern-und-mit-1407-107582.html) bitcoin is a payment option, however I haven't checked it personally.

Onkel Paul

Update: there's a paragraph about bitcoin on their indiegogo page:

Do you have a BitCoin (BTC) address I can donate to?

Yes, you can get our BTC details here. If you want a perk, email us your details at indiegogo@protonmail.ch!
509  Local / Trading und Spekulation / Re: Der Aktuelle Kursverlauf on: June 28, 2014, 07:39:05 AM

511  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Extortion attempts on: June 26, 2014, 08:48:56 AM
In any case, you should make sure that your servers don't have direct access to considerable bitcoin amounts (keep the majority of your funds in cold storage) so that when an exploit actually happens, the losses are small.
Of course, now that an intent to attack has been published, it should be obvious that all services that are not directly necessary should be stopped or protected from outside access, and that continuous intrusion detection should be run on the servers/network.
Good luck, and hopefully you can still get some sleep...

Credit card charges can be reversed, while bitcoin transactions cannot. So a company selling bitcoins need to trust you a lot.
Since you could be a credit card fraudster and tracking you down might be impossible, nobody in their right mind would do that.

Onkel Paul

(I'm not claiming that you're a fraudster, just explaining the reasoning why the kind of BTC business you're looking for probably does not exist)
513  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What is the actual process of converting a bitcoin to a national currency ? on: June 25, 2014, 06:46:24 AM
You need to understand the basic mechanism of trading one thing versus another.
Person A has some amount of x and wants y.
Person B has some amount of y and wants x.
They agree on a deal (how much x is exchanged for y) and exchange their goods.
Whether x and y are apples and oranges, euros and dollars, or pesos and bitcoins does not make a difference.
In the trade, they need to make sure that each party actually gets what they agreed upon, so either they exchange in person, or they need trust in each other or a trusted escrow.

In the case of exchanging cryptocurrency for fiat currency, normally an exchange is being involved that acts as a mechanism for finding the price (through their order book) and as an escrow. Dealing with an exchange normally eliminates the need to trust or even know the trade partner because you only trust the exchange. Exchanges can only enable trades up to the amounts that buyers and sellers offered to trade, of course, so neither good is created out of thin air.

Note that "goods" to be traded can also be promises of actual goods. Promises can actually be created out of thin air, for example, I could sell you a promise of 22 million bitcoins if you're willing to accept the deal. Of course I'll never be able to keep this promise...

I encrypted my wallet with in-built option, is it secure?  Roll Eyes Huh

Kindly,
           Muhammed Zakhir

Not if you have a trojan that spies on your keyboard. When you spend something from the wallet, the trojan will see your passphrase, and then the attacker can potentially spend the rest of your wallet contents.
But a password protected wallet is at least somewhat more secure in that a simple attack reading the wallet file will not suffice.

Never execute this program on a computer that contains anything valuable, especially crypto wallets!

519  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Why use ubuntu on cold computer on: June 17, 2014, 11:31:12 AM
The main reason why a linux computer might be safer is that most malware is designed for windows and is thus not dangerous for linux.
So when you use a USB stick to transport data from one to another, having two different operating systems will make it a bit safer.
However, linux itself is no guarantee for safety - if you execute malware designed for linux, you're hosed, even though it is a bit more difficult to completely compromise the system. And given that linux is a recommended platform for crypto coin wallets, wallet stealers will most likely target it preferentially in the future.
So whatever OS you use, that main security factor is the one sitting in front of the keyboard.

That is an "unknown" type of link that is sometimes dangerous. Do you have a relevant paragraph to quote, or a link to a more familiar site? Thanks

more familiar than xkcd? You're kidding, right?
