Lock down everything and only allow the ports you really need (eg 80) to be accessed from the outside. You could allow ssh if you switch to public-keys and disable password auth. Of course it would be better to restrict that too, but that way you can still ssh in if you don't want to go the dyndns route if your IP changes. You can also use something like fail2ban too.
502  Other / Off-topic / Re: [SOLVED] Help with Ubuntu + MySQL on: August 03, 2011, 04:58:23 PM
You can bind mysqld to an IP of your server, or to all. Then lock down the port 3306 in iptables (of course you already firewalled your server, right?) and then whitelist your IP. If you have a static IP it's simple; if not, get a dyndns entry and put together a little bash script which adjust your firewall rules every x minutes.

Or learn using the mysql shell directly; there's no need for a remote management tool at all. Then you can lock mysqld down on localhost only.
503  Other / Off-topic / Re: Help with Ubuntu + MySQL on: August 02, 2011, 09:57:03 PM
Well mysql seems to be pretty clear about the possible problem: seems like something is already using the port 3306.

Try "netstat -tunap | grep 3306" to see what program it is. Use the pid from that to do a "ps -aux | grep PID" and see more.

From there on, you can decide if you just want to kill -9 whatever process is clinging to the port. Maybe a zombie.
504  Other / Off-topic / Re: Help with Ubuntu + MySQL on: August 02, 2011, 09:27:02 PM
You could try starting it with --verbose to see if it spits out more errors.
Also, tail -f /var/log/mysql.log from another login.
Take a look into /var/log/mysql/, perhaps something interesting is in there.

If everything else fails, you can rename your database directory (/var/lib/mysql) and uninstall mysql completely. Don't forget to delete configs like /etc/my.cnf too. Then install it again and see if it's starting. If it does, stop mysql and copy your databases from your renamed directory back in. If it then fails, your database(s) are broken and you need to check/repair them.

If you run anything bad like a "control panel" that relies on mysql you may break your admin panel (which wouldn't be bad, since you only need ssh anyway).

I'm not a native speaker myself, but I invested some time and tried to correct it as best as I could.

How much can I get?
You can receive amount that appeared on main page. There is always some small amount available (booby prize), but during a day in random time we are giving away many times valuable prizes. See Stats section about prizes that soon become available.

How often can I get a gift?
You can get only one bounty per day, not depending of it’s value. Under term day we understand 24 hours, i.e. you can order new prize after passing 24 hours from your previous order. To know how much time left until next bounty available to you just make order and you would get appropriate message.

How long prize quote is valid?
You must take prize within 2 minutes from page loading time. If you are late or refreshed page (press F5), prize invalidates and can go to another user. In this case you will receive another bounty available, but if no more available – guaranteed booby prize.

You must claim the prize within 2 minutes after the page has loaded. If you are too late or refreshed the page (pressed F5), the prize becomes invalid and can go to another user. In this case you will receive another bounty offer or, if no more are available, the guaranteed booby prize.

How much times can I refresh page catching best prize?
You can do this as often as you want, but to protect our website from robots after certain refreshes per time interval you will be required to solve CAPTCHA to get the quote.

I didn’t received payment. Why?
To prevent fraud all requested payments are being analyzed with special statistical algorithm that detects probabily of cheating using various factors. If this probability is above threshold, payment is automatically rejected. Of course chance of false positive always exists, but for most cases is negligible. If you have fallen into these category, we are sorry. Analyzer’s decision is final and cannot be disputed.

What is your working time?
We process orders and send payments almost every hour in our working time, which lasts from 1pm to 3am UTC+3. To minimize transaction costs we can delay payments to send more prizes in a bunch at once.

Have you tried to use http://faucet.bitcoin.st  it's a scam to get your phone number?

I've tried using it but only get errors.
0.01BTC to have your phone validated for SMS spam? I wouldn't do that even for 10BTC...

Yeah, I only posted the first part, without the options.

I looked it up on one of my Linux boxes.

That one works perfectly fine for me:

/bin/mount -t cifs //192.168.0.123/sharename /mnt/windows -o username=USER,password=PASS

-t nfs works for Linux shares. Windows always has to be special
510  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: 1 BTC Reward for Linux help on: July 30, 2011, 10:59:28 PM
When mounting nfs shares, mount -t nfs 192.168.0.123:/home/mydir/

Try that notiation for your Windows share.

I would just wait. Sometimes it takes some time until the coins arrive, especially when they were sent without a fee.
512  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Did the programmers of the official bitcoin client release the trojan? on: July 28, 2011, 03:33:22 PM
1) If people make the password complex, more people will lose their funds by forgetting the password than would have their coins stolen by trojan.
So are you basically saying that it's better to leave the door to your house open for a potential thief just because you might lose the key?

2) If you require the password to be entered for every operation, the password will easily be captured by a trojan. So you have to allow 'passive' operations (such as checking your balance) to work without a password.
You can also think about non-text passwords. Like an image of 25 colored fields where you have to click a color code.

3) Therefore a trojan author can know which wallets contain the most bitcoins through these passive operations. He can transfer the encrypted wallets, and use compromised machines to brute force the password.
Bruteforcing salted passwords? Seriously. The investment in computing power required to do that within your lifetime would be larger than the possible gains from breaking a wallet.

You could enforce a minimum password strength. Many websites do this already to avoid "password" or "12345" from being used. I guess making it obvious to a user that his money should be protected the same way isn't that hard. I'm not saying that wallet encryption solves every imaginable problem; but it's a very big step towards security. Besides, if it wouldn't matter, why is there a how-to about using Truecrypt?
513  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin client operating with a finite amount of disk space on: July 27, 2011, 11:51:46 AM
the blockchain right now is not 600mb, its more like 400, excluding the index files. and that can be compressed to at least 80% of the original size. and. 16 gigs should be good for a linux install and 2 more years worth of blockchain worst case.

so far bitcoin has been out for around 30 months and has only just reached about 400mb, 500 if you count indexes. thats 2.5 years.

My current bitcoin directory has 705MB right now.
A backup from the 18th has 612MB.
Another from the 14th has 592MB.

So, from 14th->18th, disk space increased by 20MB; that's 4MB/day.
From 18th->27th, another 93MB were saved, which means 9.3MB/day.

Of course it's easy to say "quit whining, diskspace is cheap", but when Bitcoin wants to enter the mobile/smartphone market, diskspace and traffic does matter.
Also, if you are an optimist and hope that Bitcoin will catch on and grow quickly, then the number of transactions will increase which in turn needs even more diskspace.
So, the faster Bitcoin grows, the bigger the storage requirements. This means the initial download/verify time will also increase and most likely anger new users.
Last but not least, when reaching a certain amount of transactions per second, the everyday John Doe simply won't have the bandwith to deal with the blockchain growth.
514  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: iWantFreeBitcoins.com is a SCAM! on: July 27, 2011, 09:31:27 AM
I haven't signed up there, but from reading this thread the problems remind me of freebitcoins.org; there are two threads about that one:
http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=18308.0
http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=25578.0

Of course, it might just be a coincidence that the domains sound so similar and that both use the same whois protection and nameservers.

Just saying.

516  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Bitcoin-Qt, the future Bitcoin client GUI [user input needed] on: July 26, 2011, 02:16:05 PM
This nano, micro and etc is confusing (not that know what it's even for). Perhaps something like this:

[   ].[   ] BTC = [   ].[   ] uBTC

If i change one side, the other changes. I'd hate to enter 1BTC when i meant 1uBTC
Well that's the point. Enter any amount and select from the dropdown list if you want that to be BTC, mBTC or µBTC.

A note from my side on the [  ].[  ] input: A single field should suffice. Anybody who is not able to properly add a value with a decimal mark should not be doing any business at all.

That aside, it looks great. I hope Qt and the main branch get merged.
517  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: New URL Shortner Payouts In Bitcoin on: July 25, 2011, 09:01:44 PM
When do you expect that Bitcoin addresses are supported directly by your site?

Also, isn't a payout made when the user requests it? Your faq says that payments are made every first Monday of each month. With Bitcoins, it should be fairly simple to let a user get a payment 24/7 automatically without a minimum amount.
