501  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: PCI-E 1x to 16x flexible riser adapters on: May 19, 2011, 06:02:50 AM
Thanks...  that is what I was looking for, also found another post that listed these:

http://www.9mart.com/products/2-Lots-PCI-Express-Card-Extender-Cable-PCI%252dE-1X-Riser-Adapter.html

Here is the post:

http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=7975.0

That's a nice price from 9mart.com ... I have been paying about the same to ebayers in hong kong... takes 3-4 weeks for anything to arrive though. How is 9mart's shipping? And how much does it cost to order 10 of them?

Glad to see updates coming along frequently, thanks everyone!
503  Bitcoin / Mining / Replacing 1st GPU on an ubuntu mining rig breaks the boot sequence? on: May 19, 2011, 05:32:49 AM
I installed ubuntu 11.04 to a USB hard drive with multiple GPUs.

The installation went great. The os booted up, but there were some obvious gui/visual problems with the memory clock being so low on all of the cards (150mhz minimum).

I took out the first GPU, flashed it back to stock BIOS, popped it back into the rig and upon booting I was met with a black screen filled with lots of errors about "radeon"... "ati"... things like that... So I can only assume that changing the BIOS on the card caused the problem.

Any reason for this? How does LinuxCoin boot up no matter what/how many GPUs are installed?

I am currently re-installing Ubuntu onto the flash drive with a stock BIOS for card #1 and underclocked memory BIOSes for all the rest.

I would like to be able to seamlessly change video cards however as I upgrade my rig.
504  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining on notebook - nvidia gt540m - "connection problem", crash??? on: May 18, 2011, 11:21:47 PM
It's not worth it OP.

Your notebook's CPU will probably get about 2Mhash/s

Your notebook's integrated GPU (if it has one) will probably not even work with most miners, and if it does, will probably get about 10-25Mhash/s which is virtually pointless.
505  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: I just ruined 4 5870s...!!! on: May 18, 2011, 08:27:26 PM
You should be able to recover the cards by flashing them from a bootable USB stick or CD. IIRC the 3D clocks don't get applied until the driver is loaded by the OS. (which would explain crashing just before you get to the desktop)

You could also try booting in safe mode, since that doesn't load the GPU drivers.

Trying that now jedi95, thanks again!

Edit: Ok so I was indeed able to boot into windows safe mode, but unfortunately I was unable to flash the cards using RBE inside of windows safe mode due to administrator rights restrictions. I am able to load the RBE software as an administrator, but it loads the WinFlash utility separately and that needs to be run as administrator as well.

I tried to edit the compatability options of the winflash utility to force it to start running as an administrator but apparently "you cannot add to compatability options in safe mode, only disable them".

Which makes sense I suppose....

Ok now I am going to reboot into windows using only one good working card, change both RBE and WinFlash's compatability options to force them to start as administrator, and then boot back into safe mode with the dead cards. Wish me luck!

Edit: No luck. Even though both programs started in safe mode, I received the same message... perhaps another .exe file somewhere requires to be an administrator as well but I am not going to bother looking for it...

On to trying to flash the bios using atiflash and a usb drive.
506  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who or what is this math being done for? on: May 18, 2011, 06:12:06 PM
Read satoshi's original PDF file. It explains things best.

No, these are not being done for nothing, they are being done to secure the network.
507  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: I just ruined 4 5870s...!!! on: May 18, 2011, 09:00:57 AM
Does the motherboard have onboard graphics? Have a look in the BIOS and see if you can switch it on, then boot without a card in and plug it in once you've booted up, another thing would be to try booting a livecd without a gui.

Thanks for that!

The motherboard that I own does not have onboard graphics, no. It's an MSI 790FX-GD70.

I could however plug in one card that is un modified, boot up into windows, plug in another card and see if it recognizes it?
508  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: pushpool - open source pool software on: May 18, 2011, 08:51:51 AM
So let me get this straight...

pushpool is simply a backend software that determines how many blocks a certain username has mined and stores that information on a mysql database?

Can you show me an example of what the mysql database structure is you are working with in pushpool? What values is it keeping track of exactly?

509  Bitcoin / Mining / I just ruined 4 5870s...!!! on: May 18, 2011, 08:42:18 AM
I was playing around with the Radeon Bios Editor in windows. (I mine on linux, but my cards had a hard limit of 900mhz memory clock so I used RBE in windows to lower that value.)

I lowered the minimum memory clock to 150Mhz on all of the cards, noticed an increased hashrate without any noticeable lag on the desktop, got greedy, booted into windows again and lowered the minimum memory clock to 75Mhz.

After that... I can start booting any operating system... but JUST before it begins to load the desktop (on windows and linux) the screen freezes and I am unable to even reboot the computer by pressing and holding the power button for 5+ seconds. I have to manually switch off the power supply.

I have tried to use an un-modified card as card number one, and 3 over/underclocked cards as the second, third and fourth cards but I receive the same result.

I do have a backup of all the GPU BIOSes (thank goodness!).

Any way to flash the GPU BIOSes to my backups without booting into an OS?

Any help would be appreciated.

Is this all I need?? http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57750

Edit: It seems backing up the bios wasn't necessary, gigabyte keeps a record of them on their website! http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3355&dl=1#bios

Nice, thank you!
512  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Stealing Bitcoins on: May 17, 2011, 08:34:47 PM
So this "hack" relies on the victim opening up a compromised webpage that will steal/copy their keystrokes...? Or a compromised webpage in general?

Yes, that "tactic" can be used to steal anything from anyone, this is not bitcoin centric imho.

Lol @ OP trying to organize "faith" into 3 succinct categories. If only it were that simple.
515  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Warning: Bitcoin4Cash fraud! Won't ever do business with Madhatter again. on: May 17, 2011, 09:27:37 AM
This is another "fun" case... allow me to explain:

This person claimed he mailed me letters for locked in trades from months ago. But alas, no such letters ever arrived. I'm not going to accuse him of lying, but I will say that he has a history of not mailing in a timely fashion.

He has, in the past, booked trades and never mailed anything for several months only to email me promising to send the cash promptly. Eventually he makes good on his word, but it is always extremely late.

The last time he pulled this shit the rate hadn't moved much so I just honored an *very* old rate. This time I didn't honor it (it was 2 months overdue!!!), and he threw a fit.

He contacted me only after the price skyrocketed to offer to replace the missing (?) cash as long as I honored the rate from 2 months ago.

The booking was already 2 months old so I told him "no". The trades were expired. (My system automatically expires locked in trades after 60 days. You can mail a letter from anywhere on the planet to my location in 2 months. It's very lax. Yes, I will add this to my FAQ - before you all ask.)

Anyway.. despite my firm answer he didn't listen and mailed me letters for these expired trades and expected me to honor the old rate. I returned the mail to him promptly, as I told him I would.

Oh, and yes the changes to Bitcoin4Cash's website are a coincidence. No, I'm not broke. No, I'm not shutting down. No, I'm not scamming.

These 2 people are yelling because they tried to scam me and I caught them. I promptly returned their cash and deposits - would a scammer do that??

I think the Madhatter may either have allowed recent exchange rates to get the better of his greed, or mismanaged the risk in his business.  He has similarly dishonoured two locked in trades of mine, with mailed payments unaccounted for (net loss to me in excess of 2000 USD all told).  I inquired early on when the payments seemed to be taking longer than usual, and he repeatedly assured me that everything would be fine and I needn't worry, without ever mentioning that he intended to cancel the payments.  When he cancelled one of them without warning I wrote immediately for clarification and offered to expresspost additional money if the payment delay (which I presumed due to postal problems) was an issue for him.  He completely refused this and numerous other workable options, even cancelling the second trade after I had already sent an expresspost to re-cover the amount.  He has also refused to update his website with regards to this supposed "cancellation policy" and numerous misleading statements such as the one claiming no mail has been lost up until January.

Although I initially trusted him implicitly and made every effort to find a win-win solution to the problem, I am feeling forced to consider that he has gotten in over his head somehow and his customers are paying the price; or even that he is intentionally defrauding people.  I am at present somewhat inclined to publish the record of our exchanged emails here so that the community might see how patiently I sought any other possibility before reaching this difficult conclusion.  At this time I would advise people not to send money to the Bitcoin4Cash service, at the very least until the situation can be thoroughly clarified.  Perhaps he will post here to speak for himself.

So you are accusing eMansipater of lying?

Who are these two people? Cannot find anything about them online.

Check this out too: http://sourceforge.net/projects/bitcoin/files/Bitcoin/stats/timeline

Almost 14,000 downloads for 5/16. That's SEVEN TIMES the number of the previous day! What's with the sudden interest?

Maybe this?

"Every single person in this subreddit should have this program installed. Do it Now."

I'm one of those  Grin

Like above, I found out about bit coin last night, did a couple hours of almost obsessive reading, and like what I see. I think this has very interesting potential. 'Course I can't really generate much on my dinky laptop, but every bit counts, I guess

Buy some through MtGox and spend them on things you might have bought with dollars, anyways. That's the biggest contribution you can make.

Agreed.
518  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Daily Bitcoin Demographics -3- What's your gender? on: May 16, 2011, 08:28:38 PM
It's been done quite recently. We're most all male.

This third poll focusses on gender.

The goal of this poll series is to get a better idea of the composition of the current Bitcoin population, in order to attract appropriate merchants to the Bitcoin ecosystem.

519  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Slashdotted (again) on: May 16, 2011, 08:26:52 PM
With such title on slashdot, I didn't even bothered to read the article... I was quite embarrassed with such title on slashdot. Seemed a bit that someone bought bitcoins just before MtGox went down and wanted to push MtGox back with some cheap publicity.

I am 90% certain that Calcanis purchased ~100k of them a week or two before his show, and is now trying to promote the crap out of them for a quick profit.
520  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Better Alternatives...? on: May 16, 2011, 08:32:21 AM
OP is trying to compare apples to oranges.

Alipay is a service.

BTC is a store of value/currency.

End of discussion.
