you're getting warmer.  i've posted on this a couple of times now - and there's no need to reinvent the wheel.

the best moderated site on the internet - without a doubt in my mind - is DailyKos.

it is almost entirely self-moderating.

posts and comments have a (more or less - actually, it's called mojo) 'like' button, and there is a 'TR' (Troll Rate) button as well.  if enough of your comments have been given mojo, at some point you earn the right to Troll Rate other users.  if a user gets enough TRs on a comment, the comment is hidden from the forum.  high-mojo users can see hidden comments, but nobody else can.  one or two TR ratings usually summons a moderator.

it's a little more involved than that - but it works very well.  people are allowed to make fools of themselves, but [EDIT: not] for long if they refuse to adhere to the rules of civilized and honest discourse.

i would urge the mods here to take a look at it.

i did forget to mention that on DailyKos, while you can post immediately, there is a delay before you can start a new thread - called a 'Diary' on Kos.

* it's the weekend. *

it's a fairly typical trading pattern.  it's just magnified because the exchange rate has gotten so yummy.
503  Economy / Economics / Re: Questionnaire for Miners: What's the value of a bitcoin? on: June 10, 2011, 03:09:04 PM
the value of a Bitcoin has been a fairly steady number, for me.  mining equipment paid off long ago, and with tweaks and minor hardware upgrades, the exchange rate has roughly kept up with difficulty level (i am not saying it should - or that there's any mathematical relationship between the two, mind you - only that it sort of has)...

here it is:

the value of a Bitcoin is 15 times the electrical costs of mining one.  that is to say, i spend two days of the proceeds from mining on that portion of my electrical bill incurred by mining, and i have no other expenses.

No bitcoin category? Smiley

It falls into the second.

yeah.

and really, y'know, the only problem with Bitcoin is that you can't fill a big building up with the stuff and swim in it like Uncle Scrooge...
505  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: We're only in it for the money... on: June 09, 2011, 05:37:23 PM
i'm in it for the money.  what's wrong with that?

i'm in it as an investment - so i guess i'm a speculator.

i'm in it as a superior form of money, which - as TraderTimm points out above - is all about freedom.

i'm in it to profit in many ways, i guess.  and i understand that my profits will be greater if i use, rather than hoard.

but yeah.  money.  i like money.  good stuff.
506  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Getting Ethical Banks to support Bitcoin on: June 09, 2011, 05:05:06 PM
I can see how you are optimistically trying to create a situation where the old and new can peacefully coexist, but frankly, I wouldn't mind if every large bank died in a raging fire. (Metaphorically.)

The old system is just that, old. It is time to move forward and leave the creaking and corrupt system behind.

yes, more or less.

but co-existence is required, at least for awhile.  there appear to be two main problems that Bitcoin has to overcome.

firstly, for use in day-to-day transactions, you just can't wait for the blockchain to verify a transaction.  i want to pay for my gas at the pump.  or wave my phone at the cashier at target and walk out with my shirt.  instantly - like with visa.

secondly, at some point everybody needs a loan.  ignoring the complexity of a loan with Bitcoin, i'll simply point out that a loan in an inflationary currency is preferred - that is, it would appear to be less expensive in the long term.
507  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bit coin address changing? on: June 09, 2011, 04:45:32 PM
if you click on the 'Address Book", and then on 'Receiving Addresses', you'll see the addys that Bitcoin has generated.

highlight your first address, then click 'Edit'.  give that one address a name - like 'Original'.  you will now see that in your client in the window which shows the BTC you've received.

if you ever send a different address to somebody, for them to use to send you BTC, edit that address first and give it a name (like 'Fred').  that way, you'll know who sent you the dough.

slick, huh?

Is it just a matter of buying few more boxes or something else?

i duuno.  maybe a co-location - a server elsewhere?  is there a donation addy to help out for something this specific?

511  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why do people have such a love/hate reaction to Bitcoins when hear about it? on: June 09, 2011, 06:19:22 AM
People develop a mental model of how the world works and identify with that model. When you tell them about something that contradicts this model, they take it as a personal insult. You're basically telling the ego that it is invalid.

This is why people become so entrenched in their beliefs. The ego is the sum of the mind's beliefs.

'asdf'.  now where have i seen that before?

Understand exactly who this is and where he is coming from, and realize that he is serious.

ah.  someone else who's been through the blog wars.  i know the tone and the cite...

yes, he's serious.  and owned.  i'll grant him the slight grace of a touch of reasonableness - for his breed - but no more than that.

yelling at your congresscritters always has value, if done correctly.

don't send e-mails.  they are ignored.

send snail mail - at least hand signed.  the best are hand written.

the very best is to call - sometimes you even can speak with the critter him/her self.  but they are well-versed in debate:  don't call if you are not.
513  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: John Stossel talks about the Bitcoin on: June 09, 2011, 05:38:49 AM
john stossel is an idiot.  even if he's right, he's still an idiot.

someday i hope to perfect a fission-like device that will fire stossel and geraldo rivera at each other in a magnetic containment tube - causing them to release all their energy in an orgasmic burst of...

...teh dumb.

And you're an ass.  This was a neutral blog post, what is your problem with Stossel?  Are you his ex-wife or what?

well creighto, i don't like people with the kind of forum that stossel has who lie about facts to support a political point of view:

http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=1133

...i don't like those who abuse the tax advantages of charitable institutions:

http://www.thenation.com/article/teflon-correspondent

...i am especially ticked off by global warming deniers - and hugely more so by those who lie and use unjustified character assassination to spread the disinformation that harms us all:

http://www.fair.org/activism/stossel-tampering.html

but other than that - and a few dozen more things about him that i won't burden you with - he certainly has a nice mustache.
514  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The continuous rising compare to USD isn't good for BTC on: June 09, 2011, 05:26:17 AM
a thing is always worth what you pay for it.  if it isn't worth it to you, you don't buy it.  but you have to eat.

Bitcoin is a deflationary currency - the worth of it is likely to go up pretty much continuously.  this means that it encourages - strongly encourages - saving money and building wealth.

saving money is a good thing.  look at what's happened to the economies of the world as the god of consumption at all cost has overtaken even those very fiscally conservative nations like japan.

on the other hand, you have inflationary national currencies, like... well... all of them.

in 1959 i paid 21 cents for a quart of milk.  and about the same for a gallon of gas.  perhaps i regret not buying more at the time?  in a sense.  just like today, when gas went from $3.69 to $3.79, i regret only having filled my tank half-way, yesterday.

we are all better off with a deflationary currency.  it makes us think about our purchases; about what spending money means for our individual and collective financial well-being.

that's a very good thing.

but you still gotta eat.

519  Economy / Economics / Re: I want you to have a look at this graph on: June 09, 2011, 03:57:32 AM
ah.

so the "hockey stick" graph - in re global warming - will also be crashing down, and the world will be just fine?

because you don't like such uninterrupted uptrends?

because it doesn't fit with your understanding of... what?

no.
520  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Garzik encourages regulation on: June 09, 2011, 03:41:51 AM
I think most of you need to stop posting now, and go read Sun Tzu's The Art of War. Once you have done so, consider Jeff Garzik's statements in that light.
