Just checking in, any update on the distribution for our Euro based folks?

To anyone that had a ck card with this design, but hasn't received this special card yet, a reminder you can send proof to me or MJ (us) or cygan (eu).
502  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [23-05-19] Is Ledgers New Bitcoin Key Recovery Feature Safe? Experts Have Doubts on: June 01, 2023, 10:41:50 AM
Tiny update on the issue: https://decrypt.co/142044/ledger-delays-plans-private-key-recovery-controversy

"We've heard your feedback on Ledger Recover," the company said from its main Twitter account yesterday, announcing plans to host a town hall over Twitter Spaces at 12:30 p.m. EST on Tuesday, May 23.
and
A graphic he shared showed that a white paper on the Recover Protocol would be made available in the coming days.

Has anyone seen such whitepaper yet?
I doubt it'll change anything regarding the fundamental flawed idea of Ledger accessing the private keys and storing them in any other place than the Ledger device itself, though.

Great job here, Mopar!
If anyone wants to trade their original playtoshi please send me a dm.

Any chance there will be a playtoshi production for the remaining serials 22 - 50?
504  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Emission Intensity has a New All Time Low? on: June 01, 2023, 09:22:06 AM
I made actually a mistake in the conclusions of my last post regarding the total mining emissions, as I made the incorrect assumption that hashrate growth is equal to energy consumption growth.

It seems that Bitcoin's total carbon emissions thus very likely are already declining if we take into account the decline in carbon emissions intensity shown in the study linked by OP.

CBECI (not the best source, but they seem to provide the best charts) sees a electricity consumption increase from January 2021 to May 2023 of only about 40% (from 120 to 140 TWh/Y), in a period when hashrate approximately doubled.

If we take into account now that the emission intensity went down to 50%, then the total emissions seem to have reduced by almost 30% since January 2021. Good material for #EndTheFUD/bitcoincleanup.com, or not?

What's even more interesting to me is actually the emission intensity decline after the "China ban", i.e. since mid-2021. In January 2022 intensity reached 400 g/kWh, with a consumption of 120 TWh/Y. In May 2023 we have 140, with an emission intensity of 300. This means the current decline in emissions is about 13,5% per year.

There's of course the price parameter still to take into account. January 2022 isn't the ideal comparison point as the price was higher than today (~40000$). Maybe one could create a formula taking into account emission evolution and price.

In general, we've all reasons to be optimistic Smiley
Very clear analysis of the topic.
Indeed should be included in
- https://endthefud.org/

Would love to see any of this referenced in mainstream media. But probably just doesn't create the clicks necessary.

I was also wondering if this statistic does include emissions created by the production of the hardware required for the mining operations.
505  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Ark: An Alternative Privacy-preserving Second Layer Solution on: May 31, 2023, 10:38:12 PM
As I understand this is currently in the very early concept stages or are there already first implementations running on testnet?

From the website: "Although Ark is a completely new design, it is interoperable with the Lightning Network, which complements it."
Why would it complement lightning and not - after a period of adoption of course - slowly make it obsolete?

Can anyone describe the up- and downsides in layman's terms?
I noticed there is another (few days older) thread on the same topic.
There is also a post answering my first question: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5453928.msg62333142#msg62333142

I'd suggest to close this topic and continue discussion in the other one.
506  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: why was Bitcoin written in C++? on: May 31, 2023, 10:35:31 PM

Quote
and Satoshi was not an exceptionally experienced software developer, and this is evidenced by the presence of a lot of bugs in the versions that he developed .
Sorry but that is also a fairly clear falsehood, one spread by inept and inexperienced developers to make themselves sound smarter.  Bitcoin was written in a modern style, almost entirely free of manual memory management.  Normally in industrial software you expect a defect rate of worse than 1 bug per thousand lines of code and bitcoin had a much higher proportion of tricky parts so I would expect a higher defect rate than typical.  Yet the original bitcoin software had an extremely low defect rate [...]

Thanks for these very informative and intersting lines on Satoshis coding skills. I vaguely remember reading a similar comment years ago, but with less substance and also less infotainment factor.
You mentioned the low error-to-codel-ratio could be an indication for a team working behind the pseudonym of Satoshi - how likely do you personally rate this hypothesis to be true and are there other indicators pointing in that direction?

This is the assembled version I assume (the one with priv-key)?

508  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Which do you prefer? Physical or digital collectibles? on: May 31, 2023, 10:06:36 PM
Physical 100%.
For me NTF to physical collectible is similar to having a digital chat vs meeting in person. It just has more dimensions / layers added to the esperience that cannot be replicated in the digital world.

That said, *some* digital art I would fully appreciate as "real" art. One of my favourites is a combination of physical and digital, there is an art expo called Ars Electronica which was very early in trying to combine these two worlds.
They are still around, could still be worth checking out: https://ars.electronica.art/news/en/

I am not generally opposed to NFTs but not a fan of mass produced-for-max-profit randomly-generated-bs. Like with almost anything, there are impressive exceptions, though..

Very nice to see a suprise raffle.
Will the prize be revealed or is it up to the winner?

Is there a limit to how many messages you can send within a certain time for a newbie?

Yes there is. I think it can be lifted by becoming a copper member.
Or when you earn some amount of merit and made a certain amount of (constructive) posts.

512  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is prohibited for use as payment on the island of Bali, Indonesia on: May 30, 2023, 11:14:55 AM
Generally Indonesia has been suffering from a very strict and repressive government recently. So their aim to control financial flows and outlawing Bitcoin shouldn't be too suprising.
These instituations of power usually don't realize they are missing out on a great opportunity to improve their attractiveness both for tourists and new businesses. Oh well, nothing new to see here.

And a tiny sidenote about Bali: Yes it's nice, but there are so many beautiful places in Indonesia that are not saturated by tourists (yet). It's funny to see all the attention is always going towards Bali.

513  Economy / Collectibles / Re: (WTS) Glock Clock on: May 30, 2023, 11:09:06 AM
The fact that this is still available. Definitely shows the economic times. This is unbelievable. Pure art. I sure wish I could swing it. Glws
I know it's a little OT, but anyone here involved in selling-goods also noticing a strong decline in sales? Seems to me this is not a crypto (collectible) specific occurrence. Spoke to a few vendors recently (from different countries, very different products), they were all complaining about a very noticeable/unusual drop in sales that started about 2 months ago.

Incredible piece of art. Whoever has the sats to spare will have a timeless masterpiece in their hands (Dad-pun intended).

Will there be a holo with private keys attached or is it inteded to just carry a public key to an private key stored somewhere else?
Werk, example is a choice of user given public addy, but will do funded for buyers choice with holo on back also if they prefer...
Okay, pretty cool. I think in this case an open-dime or just pub-address version makes more sense.
514  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 51% attack on Bitcoin on: May 29, 2023, 11:35:34 PM
Some other cool, game-theoretic facts about a 51% attack on the Bitcoin network, besides the already mentioned (astronomical) initial costs:
- As soon as the network is attacked, the Bitcoin price would probably drop by a huge factor, so even double spending your own transactions will most likely not make up for your initial costs AT ALL
- You still don't and never will controll any private keys that you didn't already control before the attack
- You can't change previous blocks. If you really control MUCH MORE than 50%, maybe you can afford to even rewrite a few of the latest blocks, but the digital-pyramid that the Bitcoin blockchain is, will have maybe handful of its hundrets-of-thousands of stones changed, the rest will still stand unchanged.
515  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why the disagreement between the Government, Bank and Bitcoin? on: May 29, 2023, 10:03:07 AM
Among the last three terms on my topic, each has representatives, and they've been having disagreements; the Government and banks against Bitcoin. With no tangible reason why it's so? I mean, Electricity came, the government and the bank accepted it and placed an electricity bill, the internet came they both accepted it and the Government works with ISPs to take bills from data subscriptions. Bitcoin came they took advantage of centralized exchanges, yet they're not satisfied. I've read multiple bad reasons placed on bitcoin volatility, fraud, etc, and don't see it tangible because every innovation has its risks and importance.

On the contrary, why do Bitcoiners quarrel with them? knowing that they, Government and Bank, got no strong evidence to tarnish the image of Bitcoin completely. I think the quarrel will make Bitcoin very famous to the extent that both opponents will have no other option than to submit to Bitcoin.

There were already good answers in this thread, including taxation and control etc.

I would like to add to this: One of the main reasons for major disagreements among all three players is the fact they have completely different underlying reasons for their actions.
- Banks are profit oriented organisations, tangled between legislation and their aim to pull max profit from potential customers.
- Goverments should ideally serve their citizens, however the reality is, most of them try to keep and increase control over them instead.
- Bitcoin is a liberation from both, exaggerated govermental control as well as greedy banksters and associated big corps. It is decentralized (!= banks), it is borderless (!=governments), it is open-source (!= banks & governments), uncensorable and most importantly out of any direct control from both banks and governments.

Just looking at these massive differences or even opposing internal motivations makes it clear why there is disagreement among all three of them.
516  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [SALE] 1HoDLCLUB x Silk Road 2.1mBTC Fine Silver 999.9 Square ingot on: May 29, 2023, 09:46:46 AM
Question. Why would someone choose not buyer funded? Seems like less risk / better. Or is pre funded coins worth more or something?

More than valid question here. It's a topic that has been discussed a lot, especially recently.
Buyer funded is always the recommendation when you want to have minimum risk.

Answer with personal bias: There shouldn't be much reason to take the increased risk of a funded item. It also goes against everything that Bitcoin originally stands for.
That said, I love to have a collectible that combines both, crypto and physical world in one piece. If you load yourself and want to resell, then the next buyer has to rely on you not storing the private key somewhere else, too. Unless you have known someone personally for years, it's probably easier to trust a high reputation maker that has been in business for years. That said, recent events (the big yucking, Titan mint issue and previous scams) have shown that this is and always was a high risk route to go.
Don't wanna give any investment advice. Personally I think the safest way to go is with buyer funded items and if you go maker funded, get some rare OG items only.
One more thing to consider: if there isn't a rug-pull scam ending, you still have an extra risk of a private key misprint or bad ink / paper combo making the private key unreadable.

518  Economy / Collectibles / Re: WTS 2018 Bitcoin Penny™ PLATINUM Graded PR68 Reverse Auction on: May 29, 2023, 09:30:06 AM
Watching. How many of these are out there?
Are there ANY other platinum crypto collectibles along this wonderful rarity?

Good luck with the auction, reverse is a cool idea.

@owl: True, Platinum didn't appreciate in value like gold did, but still it's probably the only Bitcoin themed collectible made of platinum.
519  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Titan Mint Coins- Serious Issue- Titan Mint Bitcoin Coins ***NEW UPDATES*** on: May 29, 2023, 09:25:17 AM
Ty....Again incredible job with your detective work! I agree I am surprised nobody has done anything unless its happening already.

I mean this guy is in the USA! ThankGod I have only the redeemed coins and never lost a Satoshi cause of this issue!

I do hope this is investigated by legal authorities and accountability is held against Titan!

What I find surprising is the fact that with the number of people some of these coin makers have stolen from nobody has found them and just beaten the crap out of them.
I don't think violence would solve anything, and I don't think any violence should be done to these people. I am just talking about the number of people involved in the amount of money involved it's just a testament to the fact that either:

1)We as a group are calmer then most
or
2) as a group we are incredibly lazy

I'm not just talking Titan and yogg but over the years everybody who has ripped off everybody, nobody or at least nobody has reported, any physical violence done to these people.

As a group humans are not usually prone to being rational; and there is always that person that says screw it they'll never able to figure out who did it and take a bat to the perpetrators...

Nice to see we are better than that.

-Dave

I do hope we do not fall under the incredibly lazy group...I hope there are people in here with deep pockets that can start a legal process
to bring justice where justice is needed in the USA....same applies to that other scum in France.

Time will tell and I do hope that someday we can all see news of people arrested for their crimes

I don’t know what’s holding everyone up. If I had even 1 .1 2FA Titan I’d have retained legal counsel and made it a class action type deal. I implore people to stop thinking they just simply cut their losses and move on. By not taking action you’re teaching the scammers who watch these threads, and we all know there’s always scammers creeping in the background trying to plan their next scam. Not one physical coin maker who’s rug pulled has been brought to justice. If we continue to do nothing, and people continue to buy funded items, this is 100% going to happen again and again. I’d say it’s likely at least one of the current coin makers will rug pull.
Pains me to hear that it seems like all crypto collectible scammers have gotten away with it so far.
Fully agree with your statement, ChiBitCTy. Luckily I never owned any 2fa Titans. However I do understand that if you are only slightly affected (let's say by losing one 0.1 2fa value) and you have a busy life with family and work etc eating most of your time already, you think twice before entering probably expensive and very time consuming legal action. That said, given the value of some of these coins and also the fact that some folks bought a bunch of them, it really makes you wonder.
Just bringing one of these scums to justice would defintely set a nice precedent for any physical maker out there.
