5021  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTC as "every day" spending currency vs. 10 min Block Confirmation/Mining time on: December 23, 2021, 04:53:57 PM
firstly. what you are sending through routes is not BTC. its an invoice measured in millisats. a unit of measure the bitcoin network does not understand and in a packet of data the bitcoin network would not accept.
these invoices and htlc secret reveals are not bitcoin network compatible.they are their own format.

H2O can take the form of water, ice or steam.  Steam can't flow in a river but it's still H2O.
BTC can take the form of satoshis or millisats.  They're still BTC

While by no mean I want to start a flame war, I think that I've understood what he means.
His point is that LN acts like a hose. It doesn't care if it will transport water (bitcoin), oil (name your altcoin) or even air (if it's tight). It will work the same, depending on where it's plugged.

While LN can be seen as an extra layer for Bitcoin, it can be an extra layer for whatever. This is what I've understood.

BUT at the end of the day it doesn't matter what else the hose can transport as long as we can use it for our needs.
At the moment the hose is plugged to 2 holes of a water pipe, it's a water hose. So... why argue for tiny details?!
5022  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Using an ASIC for something other than mining on: December 23, 2021, 04:43:43 PM
Hi, my question might seem ridiculous but I still need to ask this question

Is it possible to use an ASIC miner for searching for data using another programming language like php?

This idea came up due to the speed that an ASIC can perform in comparison with a CPU.

Please advice.

An ASIC is not a common purpose computer. It's a device that can do one thing. Its chips can do only one thing. ASIC means application-specific integrated circuit and this basically tells the full story. The only application for a bitcoin ASIC miner is to mine Bitcoin and a few altcoins that have the same mining algorithm. And that's all.

So the answer for you is: no, sorry.
5023  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: COPA just won its first hearing against Craig on: December 23, 2021, 01:41:58 PM
I don’t think the judge can ‘ force ‘him to sign a message .
Sure. "Force" is the wrong word, but they can certainly order him to sign a message and then rule against him when he will predictably fail to do so.

Don't forget that when he first claimed to be Satoshi he did "provide cryptographic proof" (which was fake and was pretty fast found out to be fake).
The point is... is there a risk the judge could be fooled by such a proof? Because if it's so, we may face a huge fiasco.
(You know.. "Hope for the best, but prepare for the worse"...)
5024  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 23, 2021, 01:36:21 PM
How convenient for them to keep this opinion about Bitcoin quiet and to themselves, as they were rolling out shitcoin after shitcoin on their platform.

They have to earn money from the plebs so they have what to convert into bitcoin...
5025  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin as a "Global Unit of Account"? on: December 23, 2021, 12:13:35 PM
2. Many people use the USD as a reference, but what if the USD collapses? It will likely pull other fiats into inflation as well, so the reference might as well change to something else like gold.

The bitcoin purchase power can only increase overtime, but should be lower and lower increases, it would eventually get nearly stable but who knows how many years that would take, maybe a century or two...

USD can easily be replaced by EUR or even JPY if it's the case.
The point is different: as long as governments stick to their own currency, they won't accept the outsider.

While you, and me, and some businesses can use Bitcoin as standard (after the price stops fluctuating wildly), but governments won't.
And again, if you'll want to buy goods and services the starting price will be in the currency of the country the shop resides in. Then it can be derived to Bitcoin and others.
5026  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How easy would it be to fake transactions? on: December 23, 2021, 12:00:54 PM
What I think is: suppose I have a coffee shop and I decide to accept bitcoin for coffee payments (let's leave aside LN), but I will accept the payment as good as soon as I see that the transaction is retransmitted to the blockchan. How likely is it that someone will slip me a transaction that won't be confirmed (and that doesn't have a very low fee, which I could check and reject the transaction based on that).

From what I know, usually payment processors accept 0-confirmation transactions as done only if they don't have RBF flag on.
The problem I see is that a malicious customer may already send you unconfirmed input. And even if the fee in your direction is just fine, the unconfirmed parent has a very low fee and has a good chance to get double spent. And when the parent is double spent, the children will become invalid. Of course, the malicious customer has to find the right balance so he doesn't do CPFP by mistake, but that can be done. I think that I've seen that when the network was congested.
5027  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Earning interest on bitcoin without giving up your keys on: December 23, 2021, 10:32:55 AM
One will give you interest on your money only if - in a way or another - he can earn something from that. Since Bitcoin doesn't allow staking, I don't see any ways one can earn from those bitcoins without having access to your funds - usually with you sending the money to the custodial platform. At that point you own ... an account. No "for your eyes only" private keys.

So no, this cannot work on Bitcoin.

And.. from what @nullama has posted, the amount of money can decrease. This means:
1. They do have full access to the funds.
2. OP needs to improve his understanding over how Bitcoin works, else he may - sooner or later - get scammed by this kind of "wonderful" offers.
5028  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Proof of work vs proof of stake? Why can't i STAKE my BTC? on: December 23, 2021, 10:17:40 AM
What are the conditions for a coin to be eligible to be staked?

The most important condition is to have that implemented.
While many altcoins/shitcois do have that, Bitcoin doesn't. Imho Bitcoin is way better without PoS/

And why are the returns on staking different on different exchanges? Is it simply due to difference in commission ,as logically the return on staking should be universally same depending upon the lock in period?

In the same way different banks in different countries give different interest rates for the money you deposit in different currencies, this is how I see whatever the exchanges and other businesses do.
You may also confuse staking with interest on deposits or with interest on lending some platforms may do, especially as they advertise their "products" in various manners.
5029  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: There are no decentralized cryptocurrencies on: December 23, 2021, 09:53:04 AM
I know ISP's are not one entity. But they are all centralised in the way that each of them facilitate access for more than one singular user each. I believe that all countries have a cooperation between ISP's and governments, which have the potentiality of ISP's being used as tools by tyrannical leaders to silence opposition. That is the type of centralisation that is definitely not beneficial for humanity.

While you are right and ISPs may silence this and that, you're omitting that:
1. In a democratic country the ISP will go for profit, hence won't completely silence a customer.
2. If the ISP filters certain things then tunneling / VPN can, in most cases "fix" this.

So the ISP cannot create a perfect "wall" if one is... resourceful.

So while your suppositions may stand correct in a dictatorship, the rest of the world will just go as usual. And the rest of the world is big enough to not be seen as centralized (else we can end up to "bitcoin is centralized: one can mine it only from Earth" odd exaggerations).

Until that show I didnt realise the busines was so cut-throat.

I knew it was bad, but I didn't expect it to be this bad. I've watched them all, I can't wait for the new batch.
And I now have... quite some more sympathy for certain drivers... Cheesy

It's clearly eye opening, it clearly worth watching.

First, Don't you find it strange that his kids go to bed at the same time all the time?

I've found that rather strange for some time... especially as I am supposed to be one hour off in the other direction and mine are very well playing yet.
But I don't know if he indeed lives where he sometimes pretends to live Tongue (as space and time) so I didn't pay that much attention. I've learned over many years on the internet that's always late evening somewhere.

On the other hand, I was expecting new excuse, you know...  Cheesy

I'm trying to picture this moment 20 years from now on: Loyce's kids being grown-up adults and him still saying he is late because he is putting them to bed Smiley

I guess that he may borrow the time machine now and then and put them into bed again as small kids. Maybe that's what he's already doing...

NeuroticFish, fillippone, help a brother out to carry this sack of gold, would you? I'll pay good shekels Smiley

OMG, so you're selling your Bitcoins for.. gold?! Shocked
OK, I'll help, but don't get offended if the main reason is to buy back preciousssssss bitcoins...

If the whole idea behind airplane mode is to ensure that all connections to and from the device are disabled, how can you have WIFI and Bluetooth enabled? Maybe iOS just displays them as being still turned on in the system, but in reality they aren't, and all networks and antennas are disabled.

Actually from my experience, Airplane mode does disable at least cell and WiFi (I just don't know about the rest). But, with airplane mode on, you can afterwards re-enable at least the WiFi. I don't know if anything else.
And the reason is... explained in suchmoon's post  Smiley

Asta e o super stire! Ma bucur tare! Banuiesc ca nu e usor, dar keep it up, macar cat sa treci cu bine frigul.

Ow Sad imi pare rau.

Happy birthday to me!

5037  Local / Altcoins (Monede Alternative) / Re: EGLD, Mayar si nebunia cu RAID token on: December 22, 2021, 12:16:19 PM

Sau cum sa faci speedy pump and dump.

NCSF!
5038  Economy / Exchanges / Re: KYC and Beard, asking for a friend. on: December 22, 2021, 12:05:20 PM
Peaceful solutions?

1. A lot of patience and (re)tries until  - with plenty of luck - the 3rd part or whatever company takes care of KYC documents is reached and ask for a human check those documents.
2. Declare some of those documents lost, ask for renewal (for a fee), have a picture with his current look. Do KYC.
3. Switch to a different service until - with plenty of luck - a smart one is found or one that doesn't check both documents and current live image.

I don't know if it changes anything, still I think that MJ should be aware.
5040  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin as a "Global Unit of Account"? on: December 22, 2021, 10:13:03 AM
Do you think it's possible Bitcoin will become a "global unit of account" in the future? If not, why? What would a world without Fiat really look like? Your input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Smiley

1. For something like this to happen, I expect that we may need Bitcoin price fluctuate much less.
2. Don't forget that as long as the main currency of a country is fiat, the shop will have the prices primarily in the country's fiat and then converted to all other currencies.

So no, unfortunately I don't expect the prices be shown primarily in bitcoin. Not everywhere.
For all the countries give up their tools for inflation (i.e. stealing money) we need a powerful change. Maybe even a radical change in the way some people end up taking decisions for the countries.
