Maybe so maybe I’ll try a HELOC then.

Yeah do that, but why are you trying to take on so much debt?
Is it a property company you're making here or a solar power company? Surely it's cheaper to remortgage a house than it is to get a HELOC?
5082  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Implementing a full node from scratch for educational purposes. Advice/thoughts? on: November 01, 2019, 03:12:50 PM
@pooya, I just mean don't go overboard with the classes you're making. Only classes you really need are going to be to do with structures that are necessary for the code... I've been doing a lot of modelling recently so maybe it's just me splitting up everything and splitting it down further but, as I say, don't go overboard with what you're doing. Refine things down to a logical standpoint in order for oop to work (I'll try and fix up that original post in a bit.

Thanks for the advice anyone! It's encouraging.

To clarify: I'm not looking for implementation details (e.g. programing paradigms or which programming language to choose) but "meta" advice like "careful of endianess when writing/reading messages from the wire".

Edianness is pretty easy to find in the code though, perhaps you could've specified what you're asking in the op - we can't read your mind from text... For a project like this language dependency might be something you want to look at soon. Encoding large integers in some languages are much easier than in others but the ones that it's easier it becomes a lot slower...

I was looking at doing this in C# over the summer (until my laptop broke) I need to pick it back up again though...

You:d have to pick a C based language if you want anything that'll run quickly (go, c# java, c or cpp).

1- Read the bitcoin core code carefully.

2- Don't follow the conventional software development ideas that are too much focused on software-reuse, i.e. forget about oop.

1.b. As a suggestion I was given, don't copy the code exactly as it might migrate security flaws or add new ones if you're changing the language. Some compilers handle things differently.

For 2, oop can be useful if you know what you're doing and don't aggregate everything down too much. If you get a basic number of functions then inheritance is also probably the way to go for a lot of the hashing functions at least since the hashing algorithms are in use for a few different tasks.
5084  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor one Passphrase question. on: November 01, 2019, 09:36:49 AM
Is there a way to see if I have enabled the passphrase for my trezor one hw wallet?

By default, the device does not ask for the passphrase after the PIN entry. If the website asks you for it then there is a chance that you set up the passphrase. It's not a reliable method.

He probably turned on the password option so it'll ask for a pw even if it's blank.

It'll prompt you for the passphrase when you open the trezor website and put your pin in..
Then try your password, click the eject button and then try again without the password if nothing shows up.

If it says there's a wasp, a puddle and a log next to each other, the wasp can be resting on the log which is floating on the water.
If you put it like this, I can visualize it as pictures on a wall in your house. I know it's not exactly from memory, but will be impossible for an online attacker to find.
Just be careful when you search for images, Google remembers everything. Ideally, you should have a very large image collection already for all seed words before creating the seed phrase.

You could always just use clip art on an offline pc. Verbs and intensifiers are much harder to remember though...

But for nouns it's normally easy to find image representations.

Yeah I can't seem to get on that account. Can access the site and that's it...

Looks like an awful homepage (bad animation).

edit:now you got me curious if i'm correct, gonna contact her now  Grin

Did you get anywhere with that? You should've tried logging onto the site. Though that is probably excatly how it would go.

Her broken english didn't seem very broken a few things seemed amiss with the OP (didn't want to say it until they were proven to be a scammer - just in case I was wrong)...

Edit: aha I got it! The tone completely changes from start to finish about half way through as I read it... I read things alloud in my head and it started off broken and seemed to fix itself further down.

I supported that flag (posting that here because it's late and I might have accidentally clicked oppose) - not sure if my support does too much though it at least adds another member if anyone clicks it.
5088  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: A new lower standard on max post quota for weekly paid campaigns on: October 31, 2019, 12:17:20 AM
I think it's great they've lowered the bar down from 25 posts a week to 15. I don't think 2 posts a day would be unreasonable. Most of the time I scan through this forum just to check for new info and post on anything I feel my input useful (I may be too selfcenterd though Grin)

lower quotas is better than nothing. it's a step in the right direction.

there shouldn't be any weekly quotas at all since it literally gives people financial incentive to post when they don't want to. so of course it's gonna create spam---participants are gonna make sure they get paid.

I've also just been taking a look at some of the gambling campaigns and it seems they've reduced the number of times people have to post in the gambling sections to 5 posts a week (in stead of what used to be 17) that is at least a move in the right direction too (if I'm remembering correctly).

Under the philosophy that any bad publicity is still publicity (so I won't mention names) one of those campaigns still wants a higher 7 posts a week in the gambling section which could do with coming in line with the others imo.

Are there markings on the cable? They ship with a 30V cable normally (afaik - that'll affect baud if it's lower) also how far are you through the sync?

I think my old laptop (running a pentium processor lol) manages to get 0.4%/hr but I put the harddrive in it and ran a linux os from it. It's possible the seagate drives are slower now (espeically if it's not slimtype) have you tried opening it (if not don't do it it'll void the warrenty) but if you have it might give us more info.
5090  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [OCT 2019] Fees are low, use this opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs! on: October 30, 2019, 11:51:32 PM
Under current mempool analysis, it seems that 1 sat per byte puts you less than 1mb from the tip of the mempool (according to electrum). This means it should currently take 10 minutes.

I'd personally suggest it will take a maximum of about 6 hours on normal blockchain bloat (can be 24 sometimes). It should almost definitely confirm within a week though unless wer see huge spikes in the number of transactions.

It's hard to give accurate estimates as so much can change...
5091  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: "Cannot write to data directory '/Volumes/Blockchain'; check permissions." on: October 30, 2019, 01:27:47 AM
@hardware, it might be different if he's using an external hard drive. Anything above 5% an hour is fine imo.
5092  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Would a brain wallet based on a password hashing algorithm be secure? on: October 30, 2019, 01:23:01 AM
Yeah learning a nmonic phrase seems like it'll be a hard thing to learn but it actually isn't that difficult. I remmebe thinking it was hard but I kept restoring my wallet and started to learn it from memory.

Best things to do:
every so often, maybe once a day for 2 weeks, boot up electrum (potentially on something like true key os that's fully disconnected from the Internet) and type up your key there (maybe do it twice or three times a day).
If youre trying to learn it, focus on words that are similar and words that are different for example I have a seed with an oxymoron which produces a bit of a weird concept.

Try to visualise stuff (but don't force it). If it says there's a wasp, a puddle and a log next to each other, the wasp can be resting on the log which is floating on the water. If you try learning it the first way alone, sometimes the order can be messed up when you recite it which is easy to fix but avoidable.

You'd be writing down data from your brain wallet anyway so I don't think there'd be much of a problem there.
5093  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: UTXO-based blocks on: October 29, 2019, 11:26:12 PM
Miners do download the full transaction history and it's expected that they'd want to keep pools going. But it's not just mines, many people keep nodes running, you don't have to store the whole chain either, you can prune the chain but in order to keep a trustworthy source of data and remain connected to the network, you have to validate the blocks you accept from miners/other nodes.
5094  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: "Cannot write to data directory '/Volumes/Blockchain'; check permissions." on: October 29, 2019, 11:21:25 PM
Assuming it worked before and you didn't uninstall the drivers you need for the seagate drives on mac, can you tell your drive is connected and can you access that folder in your file explorer?
5095  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Segmentation? on: October 29, 2019, 11:18:10 PM
Ahhh are you yet to find the prune option which means you only have to store a small amount of the chain (I think it's 4gb min or it used to be). This means you can sync transactions and keep the mempool avaliable but also allow for lara data you don't need to be deleted.

The last 100000 blocks also are the ones bloated the most. When we were in the early 500000s we were at about half the size we are now.

This might give more information if you're interested in running a pruned node: https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/37496/how-can-i-run-bitcoind-in-pruning-mode
5096  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Would a brain wallet based on a password hashing algorithm be secure? on: October 29, 2019, 10:11:34 PM
If you use a slow hashing algorithm and an appropriately sized salt then you should be good. A lot of sites will still use sha256 and 512 for password hashing. The salt would have to be pretty huge based on the size of asics though...

It might be better to just memorise a seed instead? I know quite a few of mine from memory from having to restore wallets. Just read it every couple of hours (potentially while doing something else) and your wallet will be more secure.
5097  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: UTXO-based blocks on: October 29, 2019, 09:23:46 PM
Can I suggest the current blockchain as an improvement? Grin

It's trustless so you can verify everything for yourself you can provably still download the chain online and parse it but you should be able to run your own node (if you want to) and have it sync within 200 hours (200 hours is based on my 10 year old computer, newer machines are much faster).

Bitcoin isn't worth so much because Ripple is better... Look at the market cap comparisons.
5098  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Adult woman asks for help with btc withdrawal. Thank you than I can on: October 29, 2019, 12:01:09 AM
If you need any help feel free to send me a pm or telegram, no one here should really handle your wallet files with the 5btc stored in them, but perhaps you could send a screenshot of where they're listed so we can best help you? A picture of the window is all we really need.

State your country and we can help you try to conver them (check what the best exchange is in that country and also help you to send your funds to it and ensure your connection is as secure as it can be).

Also, I'd recommend using 5 or 10 chunks when sending funds since they're such a high value for the exchange to receive, they might not have all that money in their hot wallet sand there may be trouble with the transaction (if one bounces then you have to contact their support and wait a few days, but if the same happens and you already took out 2BTC worth then it's much less stressful.
5099  Economy / Lending / Re: Need loan 0.025 on: October 28, 2019, 11:50:28 PM
But in my country there is a saying - He who does not risk does not drink champagne.

That's fud from the rich in order to get you to part with your money (and probably put up the prices of champagne at the same time)... You don't have to risk much to profit at a much higer rate than that (if you have some funds to start with).

I don't think you really gave much of a reason, what are you a reserve for? Surely if it's the millitary they'll pay your travel expenses?

It's unlikely you'll get a loan here based on the amount of times people have scammed for much less than $200.

You're better off locking this topic and moving on... (get an advance on your paycheck as suggested above).
5100  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Can connect to ElectrumX Server with desktop, but not phone on: October 28, 2019, 04:20:12 PM
So it's electron cash with the issue? Don't report it to electrum, report it to electron cash.

Old clients are dropped by default after a vulnerability was discovered, I have auto update on my phone so didn't know it extended to android too so that's interesting.

If you're running Linux, try running
Code:
ss -tupan | grep 50002
if you want to check that port is just used once (so there aren't any conflicts - if it doesn't find anything your electrum server isn't running or it's on a different port.
