I have no doubt that it doesnt matter for intelligence agencies who they torture - because usually it wont get public attention and they are "working according to the rules and directives".

Here are some known cases:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anwar_al-Awlaki

Quote
Anwar al-Awlaki (also spelled al-Aulaqi, al-Awlaqi; Arabic: أنور العولقي‎ Anwar al-‘Awlaqī; April 21, 1971 – September 30, 2011) was an American[7] and Yemeni imam and Islamic militant.[8][9] US government officials said that he was a senior talent-recruiter and motivator who was involved in planning terrorist operations for the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda,[2][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] and he became the first United States citizen to be targeted and killed in a United States drone strike[17] (his son Abdulrahman al-Awlaki was also killed by an American drone strike two weeks later[18]).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khalid_El-Masri

Quote
Khalid El-Masri (also Khaled El-Masri[1] and Khaled Masri,[2] Levantine Arabic pronunciation: [ˈxaːlɪd elˈmɑsˤɾi, -ˈmɑsˤɾe], Arabic: خالد المصري‎) (born June 29, 1963) is a German and Lebanese citizen who was mistakenly abducted by the Macedonian police, and handed over to the U.S. CIA. While in CIA custody, he was flown to Afghanistan, where he was held in a black site, interrogated, beaten, strip-searched, sodomized, and subjected to other inhuman and degrading treatment, which at times escalated to torture.[3][4][5][6][7] After El-Masri held hunger strikes, and was detained for four months in the "Salt Pit", the CIA finally admitted his arrest and torture were a mistake and released him.[8] He is believed to be among an estimated 3,000 detainees whom the CIA has abducted from 2001–2005.[2]
[...]
The CIA flew El-Masri out of Afghanistan and released him at night on a desolate road in Albania, without apology or funds to return home.[20]

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/dec/09/cia-torture-report-us-brave-step-uk-chilcot-report

Quote
Theorists of torture have long debated whether a higher good – “national security” – can justify the lesser evil. Torture is in the same category as the bombing of populated places from the air. The agony is certain, the gain speculative. That is why civilised states no longer execute, torture or mutilate their citizens, whatever the possible justification. They acknowledge that civilisation is a matter of means as well as ends. The UN outlawed torture in 1975.

http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2014/dec/08/cia-torture-report-release-date-nears

Quote
On Sunday, George W Bush made a show of support for CIA operatives who had participated in torture, calling them “patriots”.

“We’re fortunate to have men and women who work hard at the CIA serving on our behalf,” he told CNN. “These are patriots and whatever the report says, if it diminishes their contributions to our country, it is way off base.”
[...]
Human-rights investigators have found 54 countries cooperated in various ways with the CIA’s renditions, detentions and interrogations, but the commitee is unlikely to reveal the agency’s foreign torture partners.

well, sad world we living in.

    149.95 MPG with a 1947 Studebaker in 1949
    244.35 MPG with a 1959 Fiat 600 in 1968
    376.59 MPG with a 1959 Opel in 1973.

Now these guys are going over 12k miles on 1 gallon, granted it is in test conditions and not even close to something that could drive on the road. My point is if you can make a special car go 12k why can't you take some of those principles and go 100 mpg in everyday cars?

They had a studebaker go almost 150 miles on 1 gallon, you can't get a Ford Focus to do the same? Bullshit.

there exist cars with similiar properties, just not based on what OP posted.
i remember ~2000 there were several cars in the german news that would drive 100 km with 3 liter of gasoline.
it was just there was no demand for it in the end.

its in german though:
cars that drive with less then 4 liter per 100 km (2012):

5108  Other / Off-topic / Re: [Brain Teaser] Three doors on: April 06, 2015, 12:07:50 AM
^ I thought with more doors would be more intuitive. : /
With 1000 doors, when you choose a door in the beginning you only have 0.1% probability of choosing the right one. The game host knows where the prize is and opens every door except the one you choose and another one.
But your choice was still made with a 0.1% chance. It doesn't change to 50% now, because that would be losing information. You could only say it was 50% chance if you started from 2 doors, not 1000.

yes, that was exactly what i was trying to point out.

people think of it as there would be only 2 doors to choose from and then logically the probality would be 50%
5109  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: April 06, 2015, 12:05:24 AM
Ask yourself why anyone would dedicate a considerable amount of their time to passionately ranting about something that they believe is doomed to failure.  For hours, daily.  Some have been doing it for months, years even.

I mean I'm pretty sure that, sadly, Mars One won't have anyone arriving on Mars before 2028, as is their stated goal.  But I'm not going to spend thousands of hours trolling their forums because I hold that opinion.  In fact, if I'm proved wrong I'd be thrilled.  In the meantime it, naturally enough, simply doesn't cross my mind very much.

So we turn to Bitcoin where the forums are trolled quite disproportionately and we ask ourselves why these people are here.  Consistent, vociferous and prolific.  Why aren't they getting on with their lives, checking in every so often to see whether they've been vindicated?

One has to wonder.  And not long after you begin to wonder you develop some circumstantial suspicions, shrug and move on with your life.  Let them waste theirs - don't let them waste yours. Cool

The difference with Bitcoin is:

1. There are people that don't have the balls to get in the new thing, but at the same time their worst fear is that this thing could go to the moon and they've missed the train. So their only chance is to troll. Pathetic.

2. People are trolling because they fear change, especially in connection with technology they don't understand. Pathetic.

3. With Bitcoin some people think, it might be profitable to pay trolls. With bitcoins of course ;-) Pathetic.

For me trolls are no problem, after 1 line of trolling I push the button

4. pure altruism, people just do it because they wanna save you(r money).

not sure if it is the reversal, but we will see a pump for the next 1-2 weeks.

Bears are quiet since you Bulls managed to rise to 260?

Oh dear, please...price is now ~600 below my average sell price (even ignoring shorts and leverage) You guys make me tremble with your 10$ pumps within the 200+

Is it that you folks are hodling since ~1150$, so each 10$ has to relive your wet dreams?

wake up bro

5112  Other / Off-topic / Re: [Brain Teaser] Three doors on: April 05, 2015, 10:43:54 PM
I would agree that oYo.  I have to agree with this analysis.  Once you know that one of the other doors is worthless you have a 50% chance of having picked the right door.  Just like if or when you find out you lost, you can say you have a 0% chance of having picked the right door, regardless of how good your chances were when you didn't have that knowledge.

In other words, it doesn't matter whether you switch or not.

sdp

Lol. Maybe this is better to help see why that is wrong: imagine you have 1000 doors instead of 3.
You pick 1 out of 1000, and the host opens 998 doors that don't have the prize. Would you change to the door he left then or keep the same? xD

I think right now its not about mathematical probalities but about the game show.
if the moderator opens 1 out of the three (998 out of 1000) and we know for sure it is not the prize then only two doors remain.
1 out of 2 is 50%

Like you would not need to pick at all in the first place

Yeah, but that is nothing new.
Diversion is used for thousand of years in politics and warfare.
just today it is much more sophisticated and mainly in the digital world.

You might want to google the phrase "conspirancy theorist" and where it comes from.

In five minutes I can send a PM. I'm from Germany, but what happened to the First Amendment? Only because the saloon owner isn't Congress? Looking forward for something decentralized...

hey no need to, i already send you some nxt Smiley

the reason for the pm restriction is your newbie status. after posting and being active for a while you will get higher ranks and the restriction will be nullified
it is just a anti spam measurement. (creating newbie accounts to harass or spam people with ad for example)

No, I cannot sell any Unity if I have 0 NXT in my account. That's why I had been asking for something like a cent in return for 20, but so far, nothing as well. That's somehow disappointing.

ah i understand, just pm me your nxt address, i will send you some Smiley

/edit

i just read your first post, i sent you 5 nxt to your address!
have fun and good luck trading

Yeah well, the bottom line would be that I managed to get my Unity out of Bter and now can essentially do shit with either client cause nobody told me that if I wanted to trade some assets I should see about getting NXT in advance which of course is total nonsense since it's as customer and newbie unfriendly as it can get.

you can still sell your unity to get nxt, it will cost you 1 nxt per trade.

right now you have to do the unity -> nxt -> x manually, while with the release of instantDEX everything will be just one click like you wish Smiley
5117  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SuperNET trades on Poloniex as UNITY, asset id 12071612744977229797 on: April 05, 2015, 02:14:23 AM
But how to trade if it asks for a fee of 1 NXT and complains about insufficient funds since I got 0 NXT? Are you talking about another way besides the asset exchange? Cause there NXT seem not get deducted afterwards since the client probably tells me I need to have NXT in advance.

on the nxt asset exchange you can only trade with nxt.
i think you mistook it with instantDEX, which will be released soon and offer different trading pairs.

Are you playing with the words? You said: the output power cannot exceed the input power. There is no proof for that. How do you know it?

The laws of thermodynamics says so. Now please, stop stalling, and present your argument.

Many experiments violate the thermodynamics. So something is going wrong with these mumbo jumbo laws.
