5141  Economy / Economics / Re: returning to normal on: April 12, 2020, 05:49:42 PM
Not sure about relying on Twitter posts for deep analysis on the future of society....but, in this case I happen to agree with most of the points made.

My own opinion has been that people and governments are seriously overreacting to this virus, but at the same time I do realize it's not a joke and that people do need to protect themselves.  But I do think the world is going to have a very hard time getting back to normal, and I think a lot of people are going to remain scared of viruses (and other infections) in general.

This "social distancing" thing has got to go back to normal eventually--and that phrase drives me nuts, because it's really physical distancing that everyone's doing.  If people were keeping social distance from each other, that would mean they weren't speaking to each other.  That's my take on it at least.

The economy is going to improve eventually; that's one thing I'm pretty confident about.  But it's people's behaviors that I'm not so sure about.
5142  Economy / Economics / Re: Stock market, bubbles, US economy, distribution of wealth...Americans=no savings on: April 12, 2020, 05:23:04 PM
My personal opinion is that the distribution of wealth being the way it is, is more a factor of differences among people--their drives, personal attributes, and perhaps being born with a silver spoon in their mouth--and less a matter of what the stock market is doing.

OP, you're correct about the 10 year trend of boom and bust.  That's been a well-known fact for a long time, and it's said that investors have very short memories when it comes to bubbles.  I happen to agree with that, as I've seen a few in my lifetime so far.  You're also correct about money flowing into the stock market again, but IMO that could well be a dead cat bounce.  The coronavirus outbreak is going to have some serious effects on corporate earnings for at least the next few quarters, and I don't think it's really known how bad it's going to be.

My vote is for big pharma stocks, by the way.  They'll be doing well regardless of what the rest of the economy is doing.
5143  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Using Market Cap to Determine High & Low of Market on: April 11, 2020, 05:52:00 PM
Market cap doesn't indicate anything other than having a rank.
That ranking system used by CMC and Coingecko is misleading to a lot of people, as from a lot of posts I've read they seem to think it ranks cryptocurrencies from best to worst--and that's absolutely not the case.  Any shitcoin with a reasonably high value and a crapload of coins in circulation can make it up the ranks when you're just looking at market cap.  Ripple is a garbage coin in my opinion, but it's one of the top-ranked ones.

Anyway, OP, the only information you can get from market cap is how much it would cost to theoretically buy up all the supply of a given coin.  I don't tend to pay attention to CMC rankings, and I don't think there's anything useful for traders by doing so.
5144  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Coinomi problems. Funds gone? on: April 11, 2020, 05:08:34 PM
That pretty much completely defeats the purpose of using a hardware wallet
Yep, but that fact might not be obvious to a lot of folks, and I probably would have made that mistake about a year ago before I started learning about hardware wallets and Coinomi, which I've used in the past.

I actually like Coinomi for the Android, but I'd never keep any significant amount of crypto in it.  Usually when I'm in the faucet-claiming fever (yes, I still get that even years after realizing it's a waste of time) I transfer some altcoin dust into Coinomi and that's about it.  It's too bad they didn't make a completely secure wallet.

Not sure about what will transpire for OP, but hopefully he didn't lose his coins.
5145  Economy / Speculation / Re: [NEWS] Former Bakkt CEO to Sell All Holdings After Insider Trading Accusations on: April 11, 2020, 04:23:35 PM
I'm not sure the bitcoin (options) sale is related to the insider trading accusation, but whatever.  It's kind of interesting that she and her hubby are getting out of bitcoin so soon--and in my very humble opinion now is a horrible time to be doing that, as there's likely a lot of money to be made going long on anything in the crypto world.

Not a huge news story IMO.  And by the way OP, was that enormous and un-relevant image really necessary to your post?
5146  Economy / Reputation / Re: Allah Rahmet Eylesin on: April 11, 2020, 04:01:32 PM
I had the chance to exchange brief words with Bruno, I can see that he was loved and respected by many.
Yeah, I remember one time he sent me a PM showing me how easy it was to fake a screenshot after I'd posted in a thread about that--and the PM Bruno sent obviously took some effort which he didn't have to make.  He was also one of the first personalities I got familiar with when I registered over five years ago (along with Vod).

He had a great reputation as a scam buster for a long time, and I hated to see that reputation get sullied toward the end when he sold one or more of his accounts.  That's water under the bridge now, however, and I'm saddened to see him gone.
5147  Other / Meta / Re: Theymos, may be a custom title please. on: April 11, 2020, 03:40:12 PM
Brouno died just three days ago. RIP dear Brother.
Ah, fuck.  I thought he might have more time than that based on what he posted.  That sucks.

I'd definitely not be opposed to an honorary rank for deceased members, though bestowing one upon death would essentially be a judgement call about their popularity on the forum, and I'm not sure who'd make that call--I'm sure Zepher and Bruno would be worthy, but how about if some troll like cryptohunter was confirmed dead?  Know what I mean?  Seems like it could be a sticky situation.
5148  Other / Meta / Re: POLL: Initial merit provided to older established accounts on: April 10, 2020, 03:39:00 PM
I guess a better way to put it is... I'm looking for whether you, as a forum member, think the majority from pre-2018 deserved it or the majority did not.
Yeah, I get it but none of it was earned merit so I don't see it as an issue of whether any members who received airdropped merits were deserving of them.  It was just a mechanism to grandfather in higher-ranked members and (speaking for myself here) that initial amount of merit isn't indicative of quality posting.

I'd say that most of the Hero and Legendary members in January 2018 were the best posters--and that's obviously comparing them to the lower-ranked ones, which is where the problem of shitposting was all along.  If I agreed that your question is one I could answer, then I would have to say yes.  There were--and are--certainly garbage posters among the higher ranks, but in general I think they "deserved" that airdropped merit.
5149  Other / Meta / Re: POLL: Initial merit provided to older established accounts on: April 10, 2020, 01:12:32 PM
Not only did I never care about the airdropped merits, I'm kind of wondering why it would be an issue right now, more than two years after the inception of the merit system.

Theymos realized where the problem was as far as shitposting goes, which was in the lower ranks.  I don't think he wanted to penalize any members who'd already ranked up, nor was he going to spend time trying to figure out which members "deserved" higher ranks.  In other words, he did the best he could when he created the merit system.

As far as those airdropped merits go, keep in mind that there were also sMerits associated with all of them and that was necessary to jump start the system into action.  Nowadays if you're looking at who's an excellent poster based on the merit system, you'd be looking at earned merits, and anything that got airdropped can be discounted.  It really isn't a big deal, nor do I think Theymos would make any changes to what was done in 2018 based on present complaints.

It's a non-issue.
5150  Economy / Economics / Re: Rebooting the World after the COVID-19 Shutdown on: April 10, 2020, 12:09:38 PM
It looks like someone just read Maslow's theory and decided to smoke joints while writing this post lol Grin
Seriously, though I applaud OP's effort.  I don't have anywhere near the attention span to read through a massive post like that, but I've been asking myself sort of the same question lately.  Seems like society has made a lot of changes that don't seem like they're going to be easily undone--and I think a lot of the changes are fairly unnecessary as well, but that's just my opinion.  It isn't going to be easy to just stop freaking out about germs and infection and get back to the days when we'd all be crowded in a line at the gas station.

But I hope the world can get back to that point and realize that we didn't just live through the zombie apocalypse but something much, much less severe than that.  As I said, I have my doubts however.

When the lockdowns are over, the life will go back to normal.
You might be (and hopefully are) right, but I have a feeling it's not going to be that easy.  In any case, all we can do is speculate since we're not there yet.
5151  Economy / Reputation / Re: Lauda has insulted the forum on: April 09, 2020, 07:19:18 PM
Side note: I agree politics are "big" here on bitcointalk and there are people profiting in several ways from that
I don't think that's even the issue here.  The problem as I see it is that it has become so easy these days to garner sympathy by blabbing on about how much you've been persecuted, i.e., how much of a victim you are.  But in this case, what do we have?  One member who thinks the Turkish local board is stupid.  And OP wants Lauda whipped by the mods for expressing an opinion?

You do realize Theymos thinks more of unfettered speech than you do, right OP?  There's no way in hell Lauda is going to get in trouble over that statement--nor should he/she/it.  If you don't have a thicker skin than this, you probably might want to stick to forums which have nannies as moderators and don't tolerate anything even close to offensive speech.  That isn't how bitcointalk is.  Not since I've been a member here.

Don't you love how this forum gives you more freedom to say what you want than the country you live in?
Ah, I wouldn't have thought to say that but you'd have beaten me to it if I had.  So true, so true.
5152  Economy / Reputation / Re: I have a question DarkStar_ on: April 09, 2020, 04:32:27 PM
I'm not doing drama or something.
Yes.  You most certainly are.

DarkStar_ has zero obligation to you or anyone else to name names as far as who complained about that guy's posting habits.  The same situation has occured in lots of other campaigns, and neither the Chipmixer campaign nor DarkStar_ as its manager are unique in that respect.  If a member is consistently producing low-quality posts and is getting paid for them, there's a good chance someone is going to pick up on that fact and report them to the campaign manager--and that's what should happen.

I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with Kalemder's nationality and everything to do with the quality of his posts (which I haven't taken a look at).  DarkStar_ is an excellent manager and I would trust that he didn't make a snap decision based solely on a report from one member.  I'd bet that he took a look at Kalemder's posts and came to his own conclusion.

Based on this I would say that disclosing the user who complained is not a good idea. It's likely that this user would face retaliation.
It's not a good idea and I'm sure whoever it was would get shunned, flamed, or worse if he was named.  Even the existence of this thread suggests there might be a lynch mob waiting at the saloon.
5153  Other / Meta / Re: [Serious Discussio]Deliberate shielding of scammers? Equally as bad as scamming? on: April 09, 2020, 04:17:36 PM
This is not a isolated incident. This behavior is rife?
I'd ask you for examples, but I'm pretty sure I already know your agenda here.  There's no need to debate generalities like what you described when specific examples with unique circumstances would probably be much more worthy of discussion--however, I'm also fairly sure we've had this and similar discussions many times in the past, and at this point it's getting very old.

Will I ever get to retire this picture?
Not as long as OP and his alts keep beating dead horses like this.

I am guessing that the account is:
-an alt of CH
-an alt of someone who has a grudge on DT
I'm wondering if it's an alt of TECSHARE.  Who knows?
5154  Economy / Economics / Re: The pandemic outcome on: April 09, 2020, 03:10:12 PM
Don't take any loans, keep some cash, keep some crypto (depending on your risk apetite) and you'll be fine.
I agree that all of those things are great, except for a lot of folks that advice is impractical.  There are quite a lot of people who are currently (and hopefully temporarily) out of work and have had to sell some of their investments in order to free up some cash for living.  There are also those who never had any investments--like stocks, bitcoin, whatever--to sell in the first place, as they were working paycheck-to-paycheck before the outbreak happened.

Things have gotten very ugly as of late, but in my area at least I still see a lot of businesses still open and that's a good sign.  However, I think we're going to start seeing the repercussions of layoffs and business closures months down the road, and I'm expecting a stock market correction worse than what we've already seen.  I could be wrong about all of this, but I get the feeling that it's going to be a while before things start getting back to normal.
5155  Economy / Reputation / Re: Merit abuse by a Legendary on: April 07, 2020, 03:57:05 PM
I agree. Unfortunately fiverr.com has many merit sellers.
Anywhere from $10 per merit upwards
That's insane.  I haven't been doing much reading on the forum for the past couple of weeks and thus haven't really noticed the level of garbage posting, but are there still a lot of bounties going on?  I thought a lot of them had died off--and I haven't seen a lot of merit-begging threads in quite some time, so I sorta figured the market for merits dried up.  Guess not.

I don't think he's going to use his merits to sneak an alt into a sig campaign or for any more nefarious purpose. Even if he has one or more alts that he's merited, he doesn't really use them for anything other than to bolster his own ego.
That would be a bad use of the merit system in any case, though I don't think it would be tag-worthy.  Just my opinion, however.
5156  Economy / Reputation / Re: A Large Farm of accounts cheating on signature campaigns on: April 07, 2020, 02:55:45 PM
Can't imagine how a single person could manage such as amount of account.
It might not be a single person, but who knows.  I've been fairly confident that whole families engage in bounties, sig campaigns, and whatever else, and there are probably community bounty farms whereby all the members pool their funds together into one wallet.  But in the end, it's impossible to say what's really going on when you find crap like this.  When accounts are tagged, you'll start hearing all sorts of excuses and pleading--but there's just no telling what the truth actually is.

With this many accounts, though, I doubt it's a single individual.  Possible but unlikely.
5157  Economy / Reputation / Re: Ree lauda the scammers gender pretending to be female? on: April 07, 2020, 01:57:11 PM
Are you saying now lauda is trans?
I don't know what Foxxy was saying, but I strongly suspect Lauda isn't trans--but it doesn't matter to me all that much what gender he/she is.  I've always suspected that Lauda just wanted to be as anonymous as possible, which includes not letting everyone know what gender you are.  I don't recall Lauda ever correcting anyone who used one or the other of the gender pronouns, which you'd think someone would if that was an issue for them.

I'm sure I missed something in the past few days, but how did we get yet another CH alt stirring up drama, and what's the importance of Lauda's gender mystery right now?
5158  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: [H] $150 bitcoin [N] PayPal at preev 1:1 on: April 04, 2020, 06:49:43 PM
Still looking to sell $100 worth of bitcoin.

Please: I'm not going to do PayPal deal with any member who isn't relatively trusted or who I haven't done deals with before, so if you're a lower-ranked member with no trust please don't bother posting here or PM'ing me.  Thanks.

Edit:  Deal done with petahasher, locking thread now.
5159  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Robert Kiyosaki believes in Bitcoin on: April 03, 2020, 02:40:21 PM
Robert Kiyosaki has been "advocating" for bitcoin for a while already lol: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysFi-IWAARc
No doubt, though I know his name from his constant shilling of gold and/or silver, which he's been doing for years.  He's one of those permabulls when it comes to precious metals, and that stance never made sense to me.  To him it's always a good time to be buying metals, but if you'd followed his recommendations in 2011-2014 you'd still be underwater.

It's fine that he's bullish on bitcoin, but I'm still going to tune his opinions out.  It's obvious to me that his judgement is either poor or that he's telling the public one thing whilst doing something completely different (like selling gold/silver).
5160  Economy / Economics / Re: Economy is dying but market prices are going up? on: April 02, 2020, 02:53:43 PM
There is a virus pandemic, more people are dead every day, even more people losing their jobs, there is a lockdown and people dont work.
The death rate from COVID-19 isn't all that high compared to other causes of death, so keep that in perspective.  Lots of people die from seasonal flu every year, and other infections, and all sorts of other causes.  It isn't as though coronavirus kills everyone who gets infected with it.

Second, the job loss might be a temporary thing and I suspect that whenever this shelter-in-place mandate is rescinded, people will find their old jobs waiting for them.  The only question in my mind is how long that's going to take.  If it goes on long enough, it certainly could do major damage to the economy.

And last, the economy isn't dying.  It's taken a hit, but this situation we find ourselves in is not going to last forever.  I think investors realize this and that's why the stock market hasn't totally collapsed.  Don't know if it's the optimist in me, but I don't think things are as bleak as they're being portrayed.
